Just a quick FYI that we are looking at this problem. I don't have an update on it because I was on vacation for a while. But for now, wanted to let you know that we are finalizing our DTS encoder which once done, should produce the same experience as the Toshiba player which everyone was happy with...

I think I'll wait for a price drop to $100 before buying the HD-DVD addon.

It still won't be as good as the toshiba --- because the 360 is too loud even without the dvd drive in use.

They should have had this figured out long ago. If someone spends the extra money to have a receiver that supports DTS, why would he want HD DVD playing in the older dolby digital format?

No they are going to implement TrueHD DTS ...its the "new" standard...its amazing...the Toshiba HD-XA1 just got it via a firmware update...same is happening for the 360...eventually they will turn on TrueMASTER DTS...Thats the final holy grail...no HD-DVD player yet has it turned ON.  Its a case of they got us the hardware asap and left the backdoor firmware updates to co-incide with the finializtion of the HD-DVD spec.

I am an HD-DVD author using the sonic tools.

1 title finished...almost 2 (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

Also for those interested you can author HD-DVD's right now!!! Using the free Microsoft HD-DVD jumpstart kit you can do menus, interactivity and everything...for encoding your videos you need quite a few tools but it can be done at home right now. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)  You can record to DVD-5 or DVD-9 and write with nero using Xbox-compatibily mode UDF 2.01 and you discs will play on the xbox360 hd-dvd player...its awesome.

Just make your menus, buttons in a 1920x1080 photoshop .psd and you can do slices and implement via the dev tools...its easy.

Wrong wrong wrong

Dolby Digital TrueHD is not DTS

Dolby Digital TrueHD will not fit on a sfdif connection

DTS-HD will not fit either

What they are adding is plain old DTS

Eh...I'm not sure about the folks above, but I interpreted this news as stating that the TrueHD down conversion will be made to a DTS stream instead of the current Dolby Digital conversion, which has a good deal of potential since DTS has about 3 times the bandwidth of Dolby Digital.  Regular ol' DTS already goes straight through without conversion, but DTS-HD gets converted to Dolby Digital.

Wrong:

EVERYTHING gets converted to Dolby Digital at the moment.

DTS is NOT passed through as it should be!

TrueHD and DTS are DOWN-CONVERTED to DD 5.1.

And Caldor is correct about S/PDIF not being high enough band width to handle TrueHD - TrueHD *requires* at least HDMI 1.3.

Get your facts straight!

Or an analogue breakout cable, but it depends if MS ever decide to impliment TrueHD decoding without downconverting to DTS

Hmm...

So is the PS3 in the same boat or what?

the ps3 has hdmi 1.3 and supports whatever the advanced audio is on the blu-ray, provided you have a amp that can accept a hdmi 1.3 (which i dont there is many and there probaly expensive)

I am glad you figured out how to to this.  But, do you know how to do it on a mac.  I have a sony hdr-hc3 video camer, that records in high definition.  I have tried to to what you are talking about with dvd studio pro, but the disc is never readable by the 360's add on.  Any ideas as to why?

I don't know what the bandwidth limit is on the optical connectors on our receivers, but I know that the plastic fiber itself can carry much more data than the s/pdif is limited to. I think it's time for a system overhaul by manufacturers. Funny how sony is all behind the blu-ray, HDMI, and Sony/Philips Digital InterFace, but they have yet to come up with a solution for this problem. (If it is in deed a problem)

Wrong:

I just put the DTS DVD of Saving Private Ryan in my HD-DVD player and guess what?  My receiver picks up the audio as a DTS stream.

As I already mentioned in my initial post, DTS-HD does get down converted to Dolby Digital and I never said otherwise.

Get YOUR facts straight!

I'm not connected to the chain of discussion but:
What do you think that proves?  That the external drive can use the same standard DVD playback software as the internal drive uses?  If you had a HDDVD with standard DTS on the disc what you've done might have been a propper test.  The issue is the software they wrote to run the HDDVD playback is currently configured to downmix everything to DD5.1.  If you run a standard DVD anywhere in the machine it's going to use the standard DVD playback software which isn't hobbled by this feature.

Point taken and I stand corrected.

Since I currently don't have an HD-DVD with DTS track, a search over at AVSForum confirms that all audio tracks on HD-DVD get converted to DD.

Heh, for some reason that conjured up the image of the 360 trying to take a big fat dump through it's optical port and not quite managing to do it.  I really need to get some sleep... rotfl.gif

Its not about technical things its about studios locking down the content on secure digital interconnects, and thats HDMI.

You can get Doly TrueHD etc through 5/6/7.1 analogue outputs, so what has that got to do with anything?

It's because studios are more worried about "exact copies" for some reason rather than people copying of analog sources. DVD's originally had the digital audio connections locked for copying but analog always works.
