Monkey ISLAND! |
That is one of my all time favorites. It's hard to pick ONE favorite, owever, I'm going to have to mention the original NES version of Legend of Zelda.
Also, Star Control II. One of my all time faves. If you haven't played it, do yourself a favor and check it out. You can download it here:
http://sc2.sourceforge.net
Yeah SC2 rocks. I'm surprised someone hasn't ported it yet. It uses SDL and is coded in C/C++, so should be reasonably easy for someone smart, I would assume.
oo, no way. from my point of view red alert 2 is the absolute best game ever! no one agrees with me, but it's great! the teams are ingeniously equal without being perfect clones of eachother (like warcraft) the units are sweet and there are countless different strategies out there that can be used to win!!!
not to mention it's kinda old and very easy to get cheats for online multiplayer
lol dude morrowind?!?! sorry, i just can't understand those of you that like rpg's. I just won't ever get it.......... BUT PRETT MUCH ANY REAL TIME STRATEGY GAME RAWKS!!
yeah, i'm a loser...
Double Switch for Sega CD
ff7 and goldeneye and then the ocarina of time
i like morrowind to. but. definately NOT the best game ever made.
FF7 is best. according to www.gamerankings.com , ocarina has the highest average score of all the games they have reviews for.
morrowind is like crack and once you get off it you know not to start up again, although there are some that can't resist.
Goldeneye and Zelda 64 are high up on my list
If I had to pick one, I'd say the original contrra just because that game has NEVER gotten old to me and I've beaten it countless times.
Bar none--- Riddick is the best game out right now !!!!!
tetris? pong?
Diablo is the best game ever made , then Dark age of Camelot
MOnkey island 2 had a much better ending than Monkey island one. (someone mentioned it earlier)
WHOA WHOA WHOA!!!!! How can you have all those responses and not actually name the greatest game ever:
DIG DUG!
haha
The Halo family.
Solar Jetman or Snake Rattle 'n' Roll on the NES.

Totally agree with you on it being an immense game, definately in my top 10, however I'd have Indiana Jones games in there too, but the game for me that is unrivaled is:
Crusaders of the Dark Savant (Aka Wizardry 7)
Never Have I found a game that good!
Night Trap for SegaCD is worthy of condsieration.

Castlevania: SOTN |
You can't honestly say that's the best game, when a superior version exists in Castlevania: Nocturne in the Moonlight. Same game, but a few new areas.
Myself, I'm not a big fan of CV.
Anyway, Morrowind is a great game, but it's hardly the best ever.
I say Star Control 2.

which console is that CV for.. i know the one for saturn had more areas, and character, but it ran slower
and i don't know why i like this game so much it seemed to me after i played this game i was hooked on castlevania games, so i have almost all of them now
Sword of vermillion for genises,or dragon warrior for nes,or the original phantasy star for master system.just my opinion.
One word:
STARCRAFT:Broodwar
It's just amazing. After 4 years of playing, still learning new stuff. (I became 4th of my country last year) It easily beats red alert.

What country would that be? Smom?
Mortal Kombat 1,2,3 for snes and genesis
Street Fighter for Snes or genesis
But my all time favorites are Killer Instrinct, The Suffering, and Halo.
Super Mario Bros. 3 is without a doubt the best game ever. I've played that game so many times through it's ridiculous. It's endless greatness will never be forgotten.
Mortal Kombat series especially MK2
the greatest game ever is power stones 2.
i have been playing it since it came out on the dc.
its the only reason i have sold my dreamcast.
i still day it till this day and have haven't got every weapon yet.
(i dont like to cheat)
for those of you that haven't been blessed by paying this game, its a 4 players fighting game.
me and my friends just cant stop playing it.

hmm now that i think of it...killer instinct was the fighting game that took by far the most of my time... good times
Yes, Contra on NES is numero uno. Oh, and Bobonion...I remember reading a game mag about nighttrap (sp?) and I never had the sega consoles, but I remember that cause the game ad was like, "Scantily clad women". I was pretty young and thought...AWESOME! I wish I had that console.
Ah, and it's funny how so many people forget important things from school/work/life, yet almost everyone will remember "up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, b, a, select, start." 30 extra lives for contra is prlly the only way I ever beat that game...and I beat it alllllllot. Yes, I realize select is only needed for 2 players...and that's how I usually played.
there are only 3 games in the worl worth mentioning,
morrowind, screamer 4x4 and mercedes benz world racing.
notice i like to free roam
FF7, Suikoden I&II and Full Spectrum warrior

The closing line was just too much... it summed up computer games succintly.

Gawd it's still funny.

C'mon everone, nothing can come close to the open endness of morrowind. There is not a game out there that has more gameplay to it. I men in what other game can you steal the clothes of a person! I have played 4 to 5 HUNDRED hours of it. The only game that took me away for a while was planetside. My old favorite was FF8. |
I dunno about you, but I WANT the game to end at some point or I loose interest. It otherwise becomes, "yet another title I've never finished...".
That is I need to feel that I'm getting somewhere and approaching an end.
Open endedness is great when you want to revisit the world...
Grand theft auto 3 is by far the best games ever made
morrowind; one of the best rpgs around with a strong modding community been around for atleast 2 years, had three prequels and an alleged sequel in the works
half life; spawned the extremly popular counter strike mod , another one of the best games , good story , still going strong
starcraft; the legendary defenitve rts that had a stellar storyline and three unique factions, popular in korea , persuaded the semi spinoff warcraft iii which is also popular
these are atleast (one of) the best RPG, best FPS, and best RTS
they all have good modability

half-life
it's still there for me |
Yup, that was a "memorable" game.
I hope "2" lives up to it's ancestor.
BTW: I played it thru with 3D shutter glasses and that made it far more intense w/4 channel audio.
In order they were released
Spy vs Spy- The desert caper -C64
Way of the exploding fist - Zx spectrum
Kick off 2 -Amiga
Super mario bros 3 -Nes
Super Mario 4- Snes
Goldeneye- N64
Halflife -PC
Unreal Tournament (deck 16) online PC

Woah, woah, woah. I actually AGREE with someone on an XBOX forum?? Thats unpossible..
So, yeah, Star Control II is the best game ever. Both the single player, and unlimited hours of fun 2 player supermelee.
But it will never be ported to xbox. It would either be illegal (using unlicensed XDK) or would break the GPL of possibly both the code itself, and the SDL kit.
Its possible you could maybe recompile it if you have linux on the box, but i dunno how simple (or possible) that would be. |
You asshole, the source code for the 3DO version has been public for over two years, and there's already a free version for virtually all Operating Systems.
Some fan you are.
Hmm... I don't think it's possible for me to choose the "best" game ever. I'll just go the cheap way out and list my favorite games of all time (in order from top to bottom):
Metal Gear Solid/Metal Gear Solid: Twin Snakes
Metal Gear Solid 2
Super Mario RPG
Final Fantasy VII
Final Fantasy VIII
Killer Instinct (Arcade Version)
Nearly every 2D Mario game
Perfect Dark
Every Metroid game ever made (except for the original NES Metroid and Metorid II)
Zelda: Wind Waker, Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask
Super Smash Bros. Melee
You Don't Know Jack (PSOne version)
Super Mario 64
Lunar Silver Star Story Complete
Advance Wars 1&2
Capcom VS SNK 2 (I don't know why, but I've been playing it nearly every other day since it was released for PS2 in Japan)
Tons of Capcom fighting games...
Whew... took me awhile to remember all these gems.

Bleh... I guess its just something a MG fan can't appreciate. Sure, I'll give you the fact that parts of the story are really fucked up (I still scratch my head every time the "AI Colonel" goes off on that really weird evolution tangent to Raiden), but the game absolutely tore boundries down (not so much for xbox as much as PS2) and it was one of the most hyped (for the most part, duely so) sequals EVER, as I remember. Heh, I think I still have my MGS2 "!!" t-shirt from e3... And common, who can say Snake's mullet isn't cool?
Oh, add Super Punch Out!! to my list...

Actually I'm talking about SUPER Punch Out for the SNES. While Mike Tyson was a good game, Super Punch Out took it to the next level. It is probably my favorite boxing game of all time.
Yeah, he sucked. I could deal with losing to everyone else, but he got to bring a giant stick in the ring with him! How was that legal?
There was endless replay value in that game. Even after beating everyone you could just try and beat your times. Beating Gabby Jay in like 9 seconds was always fun.

I'm glad someone agrees with me. While there are games that show off their incredible graphics or superb storyline, how many games are there that will cause you to play hours and hours with simple colored blocks? This game has been released on just about every system in existance since the game was first created. Morrowwind is a great game, but it is limited to Xbox players only who are into RPGs. That's a very limited audience. Tetris can be enjoyed by both casual players and hardcore players alike, ON ANY SYSTEM! A 4 year old can play it as well as a 94 year old. You know a game is good when even when you are not playing, you find yourself seeing regular everyday things and imagining them in the block shapes of the game. Hey, it was even referenced in an episode of The Simpsons and everyone can understand the reference. How many games could pull that off?
Ok, now that I got that off my chest, I have to say that Tetris IS NOT my favorite game of all time.
Confused? Well don't be. The post asked for the vote for the greatest game ever made, not for your favorite game. That would mean the game that you think overall is the best by everyone as a collective. After all, it was voted best game overall by a gaming magazine (EGM or GamePro, I can't remember which) about a year or two ago. But since everyone else is listing their favorite games, I will as well. In no particular order:
Silent Hill series
Age of Empires series
Warcraft series
Wizardry series
Crash Team Racing
Burgertime
Ghost Recon
Half-Life
Halo

I've always been partial to:
Mike Tyson's Punchout (NES)
Megaman II (NES)
Kid Icarus (NES)
Rygar (NES)
R.C. Pro Am (NES)
Legend of Zelda (NES)
I wasted many a day in my youth and still do now on Mike Tyson's Punchout and Megaman II. The others I wasted many days on then and now also, but not quite as much as the first two.
EDIT: Damn, forgot Contra (NES), UU DD LR LR BA Start..
I say Super Mario 3 or The Orignal Legend of Zelda game for the NES I also forgot Super Punch out and Final Fantasy 3.
All time favorite would be ultima online. That is pre-morrowind, and you could do all the things you wanted to do, and then some. Awesome game, possibly the best muliplayer online game...well, then again I havent played Everquest or Warcraft yet...
As for consoles...check my post at top 5 rpg's...Other than a good rpg, I love the ncaa football series. 06 Kicks ass!
UO
FF 3
NCAA Series
Zelda (first one)
Zelda (Link to past)
Lemmings.
Also the Sonic series on Game Gear.
The big franchises.
Mario
Zelda
Metroid
But I still beleive Fallout pulled the RPG genre out of its death throe.
Hands down...GOLDENEYE!! Oh, and the first level of TimeSplitters 2...because it felt like Goldeneye.

If by "Great Game" we mean how much of an impact the game has made on gaming in general and our everyday lives, then i'm sad to have not seen some of these on here yet:
Doom 1 & 2 (Included on Doom3 for Xbox; Trent Reznor did the Tracks for Ultimate Doom! and Doom3 years later)
Quake 1 & 2
Wolfenstien 3D (on the 486, ya know, the 25mhz computers, lol)
Command and Conquer (the orignal ran against the original War Craft on the market)
A Link to the Past was so good, they ported it directly to the Gameboy Advance!!
And one i haven't played but has effected many around me is: Counterstrike
I know that's a huge list of FPS games, but, you wouldn't have Halo or Halo 2 without 'em, I lay money on that bet!
best games evah, no discussion:
metriod prime/metriod prime : echoes
half life 1
halo 1 (not 2)
final fantasy 7
goldeneye64 (changed multiplayer gaming as we know it)
pokemon (following versions: red/blue, yellow, and saphire/ruby)
super mario bro's (1 and 3, i agree, smbw and [to me] smb 2's timing is a little screwy, i can ever get a good line on those)
zelda : OOT (changed 3rd person action/adventure as we know it)
counter strike (1.3 and below, 1.4> has become more and more noob freindly)
super smash bro's (melee and the n64 version)
galaga
and of course, pacman (w0k w0k w0k w0k w0k)
Metal Gear Solid 2, 3, and TT.
.

Oh yea... Zork!
i dont think anyone can argue that Cool Spot wasnt the greatest game ever...
The Final Fantasy series on the SNES (especially FF 3, now that was one helluva good game!)
awesome game, completing The Curse Of Monkey Island on my old Amiga 500 will always remain my favorite and most memorable gaming moment..
long live fancy pants!!
p.s. anyone know if there is another monkey island game in production? in my opinion the latest one (escape from monkey island i think its called) was lame, point and clicks should be 2d i reckon, what do u think?
oh and morrowind is a good game too, best thing about that was sneaking into peoples houses and half inching stuff or finding random dudes hanging out in the woods with their little camp fires then slaughtering them and pinching their pitiful belongings...
I loved all those old dos games from back in the day:
Day of the Tenticle
Monkey Island series
Hero Quest series
Kings Quest series
Rex Nebular and the Cosmic Gender Bender
Gabriel Knight 1
Rise of the Dragon
Blood Net
Carmagedon (spl)
Police Quest series
Alone in teh Dark 1-2
Quest for Glory
Space Quest series
I'll add more later.
Yeah Golden eye on n64 an oldie but a goodie and followed closely by perfect dark none of the new cames can even come close to matching their originality,
i thought brute force was pretty good for an under rated game
It has to be .....
R-TYPE I ARCADE
No other game owes me more money.... that bitch stole my youth (and I enjoyed every minute of it).
Man this kinda makes me sound angry...Im not.
