a modded ps2 is basically used for playing backups and imports. no gui's or anything similar to what we do to the xbox that i have heard of for that matter.

I thought there was a basic media player, nothing like XMBC though.
A chip allows you to play backups and import titles, but you can back up original games onto the HDD using HDLoader without the need for a chip (although of course you need a chip if you want to save backups and import games to your HDD.

So, exactly what do I need in order to save/burn Playstation/PS2 games onto the hard drive?

The Ps2 hard drive (can I use a ide hard drive?)
A network adaptor? (any other option?)
The HDloader program
A Ps2 of course.

Thats all I know now. Anybody want to help me fill in the blanks? Thanks.

Yep, I think that's all - I believe there's a limit on HDD size though.

Do you know if I can use IDE hard drives of any size?

Anybody? Can I use a IDE hard drive of the size like 120gb or 160gb? Do these hard drives work, or do I have to buy a shittyhard drive combo with ff11 when I dont have broadband. Please help with this question, curious.

you ca use IDE drives up to 120GB, not all of them fit the network adapter tho, and some newer seaats don't work
just look at their HDD compatability page or ask around for which HDD's fit.  my fried was able to make a drive that didn't normally fit, fit with a lil dremeling.

Um...if you don't mind, think you can tell me if a Seagate 120gb, 7200 rpm, IDE Hard drive would work? Oh, and how many gb's is one ps2 game? Thanx.

You can even transfer your PS2 games onto a PC, and then connect your PS2 HDD (HDLoader formatted) to your PC, and transfer the games via the PC..
Very simple and a bit faster than using the dvd-drive in the PS2..
This is one of many GUIs :)

BTW: if you get hold of an hdd that doesnt fit the network-adaptor, you can always just get a drive bay, and extend the IDE-connection from the na to the bay. If you wanna go over the top, get a second bay for your PC and you'll be able to quickly connect the PS2 hdd to your PC

This whole thing is a little confusing. Do you think you can point me to a website or IRC channel or forums that help a beginner know the basics or whatever. Thanks.

This is a little off topic for a PS2 modchip, but is related to PS2 nonetheless. Um...I messed around with the switch for the reset/power buttons and it made a sound like a small blown fuse or sumthing. Now the PS2 wont turn on, not even the red light coming on from hitting the switch in the back. Problem is, I wanna know what is the main thing in the PS2 that needs repairing, cause I dont wanna buy a new mobo/psu or anything. Is it just the fuse on the power supply? Im desperate for this answer and am looking to save a few bucks and time if I know what to do. Thanx.

Just to clarify, there is a LBA48 patch for HDLoader to use hard drives bigger than 137 Gig.

With modchip
You can play copied games and run homebrew apps like divx players and emulators but nothing like xbox much more stuff with xbox

With HD
You can play copied games and run homebrew apps like divx players and emulators but nothing like xbox much more stuff with xbox from hd

You an get the HD loader disk and network adaptor and you are good to go

It takes a long time to load games to the HD I like using my modchip and burning games on DVD_R better but just my personal opinion
Also you can save the HDloader program to a memory card and boot up with a modchip

Try testing the fuse on the power supply with a multimeter for continuity
It could also be a blown diode on the power supply

You could test it live by taking off the back cover and testing these points if its working normally you will get 12 volts

I dont have a mulitmeter. My Ps2 doesn't even turn on at all, so I know I dont have any power going thru it unless you think it is possible still. Here is sumthing that has been bugging me, can I switch the ps1's fuse with ps2's, giving the ps2 power? I hope it works, because I would do it then. PLZ help some more, thanx.

It could be a fuse out out on your mobo or power supply if you take out the glass fuse and goto radioshcak they will check it for continutiy for you and let you know if its dead.  You can also probably get a replacement fuse for  a few bucks if that is the problem.  Now if a fuse is out on your mobo then you have to replace it or jump it with a suitable replacement but you would need a multimeter to test each one.

If you have blown a diode on the power supply then you will have to replace them its jut easier to buy a new power supply.  (you might want to get a new mobo also)

A good place for replacement parts is www.richspsxparts.com
