XboxMediaCenter 2.0.0 - Released!Posted by XanTium | September 29 17:47 EST |
|
Team XBMC released the highly anticipated XboxMediaCenter(info) v2.0.0 point-release:
Team-XBMC and The XBMC Project is proud to announce the release of XboxMediaCenter 2.0.0. XBox Media Center (XBMC) is an award winning, free, open source media player for the Xbox game-console. The XboxMediaCenter 2.0.0 point-release source code has now been set in our CVS. We consider that the current code in the XBMC CVS is as stable as a point-release should be. All XBMC users are highly encouraged to upgrade to this stable Xbox Media Center 2.0.0 point-release. Remember, the XBMC source code needs to be compiled with the XDK, and requires a modded Xbox to run. Our thanks goes out to everyone who has tested, reported bugs, and helped fix them in order to make this release possible.
There are many new features and functions that have been introduced since the 1.1.0 point-release, that we cannot list them all here. A few that are especially worth mentioning are; the enhanced GUI/skin-engine, the Project Mayhem III skin, DVD-Video menu/navigation support (with ISO/IMG image parsing), RAR/ZIP archive parsing, a new audio/music-player (PAPlayer) with crossfade, gapless playback and ReplayGain support, Karaoke CDG-file display, Xored Trainer Engine (gaming-cheats), XLink Kai(info) (online-gaming) front-end, iTunes 6.x DAAP and UPnP-clients, and two surprise features; read-only support for FAT12/16/32 formatted USB Mass Storage Devices up to 4GB in size, and a brand new "skinnable" 3D visualizer.
For a full list of all features/functions and codecs/formats supported by XBMC please visit the "XBMC Features and Supported Formats/Codecs" page in our new online manual.
Help is wanted to get our online-manual (WIKI), and all the language translations up-to-date.

QUOTE
For those of you who are new to XBMC, please understand and respect that
Team-XBMC only maintain the XBMC
source code - we do not release or distribute
Xbox executable (XDK binaries). You can not run just
source code on an Xbox, so do not download it from our site if you do not have the
XDK and can compile it yourself, (again, you will require a compiled version of XBMC to run on your Xbox, but do not ask us where to find nor where to download pre-compiled versions of XBMC!). Please read our
FAQ and the
XBMC Online-Manual (WIKI) carefully before posting/asking anything in our official XBMC community-forum.
Know that the XBMC CVS feature-freeze has officially now been lifted, meaning our developers are allowed to add new features/functions to the XBMC CVS again. However, Team-XBMC have agreed to take it easy on the new features/functions for the next few upcoming weeks, so that if many valid bug-reports come in about the XBMC 2.0.0 point-release then we may possibly have to release a 2.0.1 point-release before we fully let loose on the XBMC CVS. In any case, we have decided to at the very least keep the freeze on the language strings for another two weeks, so if your language is not available (or up-to-date) please submit your translation now, (you may even end up in the credits if we make a 2.0.1 point-release). Note! Yes, there are still a few
known bugs left in the XBMC 2.0.0 point-release, but none serious enough to stop you from fully using and enjoying XBMC on your Xbox. Any and all assistance to squash these outstanding issues is welcomed, please see our manual on
how to submit a proper bug-report.
Finally, we like a say goodbye and thank you to
Chokemaniac (Project Mayhem III skin author) who now officially leaves the XBMC-project due to lack of spare time. We all wish him the best.
PS! New
Proper bug-reports from end-users and
new features/functions and bug-fix patches from independent programmers are always welcomed, as is confirmation and additional replication information (or samples) about
known bugs.

I cannot thank you guys enough for the pure joy this program has brought me over the last six months. I literally had the cable disconnected from my television up until a week ago because I never needed it... I was always watching stuff I'd downloaded and streamed to XBMC. The constant "ooohs" and "aaaah" from friends always brought a smile to my face too.
Thank you so very much for this fantastic piece of software. Y'all should go teach Mr. Gates a thing or two about good program design!
Now it's time to kick back and enjoy...

XBMC stores all its settings in UserData folder
"Main Settings" can be set either by GUI settings, or by editing Userdata\guisettings.xml (gets created with default settings if missing upon boot)
Furthermore you can OVERRIDE GUi settings via a usercreated file called advancedsettings.xml, you also have NON Gui settings at your disposal here.
This info is in the nice manual, see my sig.

Is this the MIGHTY XBMC 2.0? Because if it it, not to offend anyone, but I didn't noticed any HUGE change from previous build. It was just a typical weekly release. In fact, I was kinda dissapointed with it.

man you are stupid.
of course it's no major new features in it.
after all, we have been in a FEATURE FREEZE in preparation for v2.0

DUH! Why would there be anything new compared to last week's cvs? Or even the day before?
You need to educate yourself on what CVS is, what a feature freeze is, and what a point release is.
-
Congrats to everyone who've worked so hard on this. Your time and efforts do not go unappreciated.

QUOTE(EuroHEV @ Oct 2 2006, 02:18 PM)

Let me try. The developers put XBMC in a feature freeze. The freeze would be lifted once they released 2.0. Now that they have released 2.0 the freeze is lifted and new features will be developed and added.
-
plus you have been using the builds that t3ch releases right. those are weekly builds of the cvs. the cvs is basicly the beta code that the programmers are developing they upload it to sourceforge (spelled something like that) so other members of the team can view and edit it and so can anyone else and compile it. a point release is something different. the last point release was 1.1.0 i think about a year ago so there is a lot of changes from 1.1.0 to 2.0.0. the cvs is developmental stages of the code and isnt recomended for standard use yet a majority of us use it anyway and some not even understanding it is unstable
-
QUOTE(eagleswings @ Oct 3 2006, 09:20 AM)
This is great! Thanks T3CH.
You mean 'Thanks XBMC devs' right?
No offence to T3CH, but AFAIK all he does is compile the source code. It's the development team that need to be thanked, not the distributor.
-
why not both? tech also does an awesome job at compilling them! i think he is a developer but i dont know
-
Ah, I didn't know new features were gonna be added AFTER V2 would be released. I was expecting them all at once at the release of V2. Call me greedy.

Let me just explain a bit more in case there are others with your same mentality on this.
If new features were just added and the devs called it V2 then there would be an extremely large chance that many bugs would be in the V2 release. This happens when you first try implementing new things into code. The devs did not want a V2 release that was very buggy so everyone would be waiting for V2.0.1 or V2.0.2 that fixed their bugs.
Instead all the features that would be in V2 were added a while back. XBMC went into feature freeze and weekly "bug fix" builds were released. The goal was to get XBMC into as close as bug free, stable, polished, etc as it could get and then label that tree as 2.0.0. So now when XBMC goes out of feature freeze and potentially becomes more unstable, everyone can continue to fall back on V2 until the next stable build.
Hope this helped abate your disappointment in V2 a bit.

CVS: Multiple peoples who work on a single project.
Feature freeze: Name says it all.
Point release: Small release.

Wikipedia is your friend. In future, use it if you are unsure:
CVS: I can't really dumb this down, just read.
Feature freeze: Basically no major new features are added, hence feature freeze. The program is in a beta stage and is considered "not yet ready for release". With XBMC this meant that for the past few months you were potentially using version 2.0.0 just with bugs that were still to be ironed out. This explains why 2.0.0 would not look different to the last weekly build.
Point release: OK so Wikipedia could do with being expanded on this one. Normally a point release is like a small bugfix version. However, with XBMC, the point releases refer to for instance 1.0.0, 1.1.0 and 2.0.0 which are major releases, this works because they are taking point release as a 'reference point' release, basically a release when there are virtually no bugs in the code and therefore if anyone has problems with a current build they can refer back to the last point release and be assured it is stable. This also complies with the meaning on Wikipedia as 2.0.0 compared with the last weekly build did only "fix bugs or do minor cleanups rather than add features".
I hope this clarifies these terms for you.

After a couple months out of the scene, I come back and find this! XBMC kicks more ass than ever!

QUOTE(ubiman @ Oct 1 2006, 10:10 PM)
You can copy them using 'My Files' in XBMC, with samba (SMB), ccXgui or UPnP.
In case you didn't notice, this fails per the '+' sign in the file name..I simply renamed mine so the FTP from PC->XBOX could complete (only 3 files) and then renamed to orig. direct from XBOX. Just an alternate solution.
Bravo, XBMC Dev team + T3ch!

OMG, the XBOX booted my PClinuxOS directly from my USB! ...wow, using GiMP with the Controller-S is actually pretty easy

I wouldn't get all hung up on a version number for open source software. In my opinion, versioning a software release is a tool used by commercial developers to hype their latest release in order to increase sales. XBMC is open source, created and enhanced by people working on the project in their own spare time for free.
Lets not forget that during the push towards 2.0, the Devs have given you:
Complete locking control
Fully configurable user accounts
UPnP networking
Nearly 100% GUI configuring
Animated skinning support
Improved online wiki manual
Plus about a thousand other fixes and improvements added within a six month period. Instead of looking for more, more, more, why not realize this is the best networkable media player available, and thank the Devs that make it all possible.

madd props to ALL..nice frickin work loveit all..i like the trainer assoc, the new support for dvd menus, the new script installer,to many to list..
i have one problem, i cant seem to get it to run as a dash.i can get it to work as a app,but no dash..i have had xbmc as a dash many many times.i .know that u put the .xmland the default xbe in the c partition and edit the xml to specify home..everytime i do that it goes straight to msdash.i have gotten it to sayan error once. it said error in line 0 of gui.xml but the rest of the time straight to dash..
i used the ultimate boot cd to format my hdd then i add xbmc as dash.it works fine but i do not see a default or xbmc xbe, just the xml..so i erased the existing xbmc and replaced w/newer 2.0 still straight to dash...so i used slayers to install evox as a dash and xbmc as a app. thats how i did it to my old hdd.started with evox then stepped up to xbmc..still nothing..
is there a new way to install it..did i miss something along the way.i noticed that the ultimate bood cd stored memory in my udata ,so everytime i tried to install ect.,i ereased all file associated w/the boot cd as well as the setting for xbmc and evox in the appropiate udata folders..
i LOVE the new XBMC,cant stand having to select it as a app,WANT IT back as dash..

There's a whole new way to have it as a dash. Read the readme and other details in the realease for instructions. I use the basic shortcut supplied in the download (named something that my bios will load before the xboxdash.xbe - so in the case of Xecuter 4983.3 bios or whatever it could be avalaunch.xbe or evoxdash.xbe or whatever, doesn't really matter or need to be accurate) and then it is set to point to E:/Apps/XBMC. It's all explained in there, just read the instructions.

I have read the manual of t3ch xbmc 2.0 and all of the links that are provided and I still do not have the confidence to upgrade as dashboard. My last build is old but stable (3-16-06). Why have they made using xbmc as dash so complicated. I have softmod, with evox and I used to be able to just ftp in (with drive open) and delete the contents of e\dashboard then replace with current build. I would also delete the old settings folders. Now it seems like brain surgery with all of the shortcuts could someone please create a nice tutorial for softmod and xbmc 2.0? Thanks!
-
I have the same problem as one of the previous posters. I have saved my Userdata and upgraded to the latest TECH release and now i can't see none of my videos or music files. I can browse to my shares on my pc but they are empty. Also i can't see any arenas on xlink kai.
Does someone have an idea what could be the problem?
thanks

This is sick. Thank you so much .

I think it's great that we have a point release. It's been a long time between drinks at that fountain, although this hasn't been too much of a problem because the T3ch builds have been pretty stable on the whole.
Thanks to all concerned.
I was waiting on a point release to upgrade the four or five XBOXs that I've set up for friends but I'm still kind of wondering if I should hang out for 2.0.1 to mop up the last few minor problems.
My question is:
Will (or Have) the dev team forked the development tree now so that we can look forward to an elimination of the few remaining bugs in the point release with the 2.0.1 branch etc, or...
are the dev team still in feature freeze until after 2.0.1 or....
will 2.0.1 have new features and therefore the potential for new problems?
To put it another way, will 2.0.1 become the new 'point release' (replacing 2.0.0), or is it the start of a long line of new development?
-
there is a feature freeze in effect until 2.0.1 is called...
-
USB Mass Storage support is limited to 4GB.... What if I were to partition a USB hard drive into 4GB chunks. Would it see all the partitions I made or just the first one, or not work at all?
I'd test this theory but I don't have a hard drive enclosure and my USB adapter cable isn't finished yet.
