Title: Linksboks Xbmc Integration
Post by: los93sol1 on May 11, 2005, 08:30:00 PM
Hey guys, just thought you might be interested to know that LinksBoks is being integrated into XBMC by Ysbox, GeminiServer, Los93soL (that's me), and BritneysPAIRS.  Runtime is very interested in the effort and has said he will help out when he gets time.  At present, the main programmers are Ysbox and Gemini.  We already have it in a state that the browser will run within XBMC and have been working to make it a more proper integration, adding features, and making it more stable and mem/cpu friendly.  As of now, it is not very mem or cpu intensive, but since XBMC is a very large project it is very important that we do everything possible to make the linksboks libraries as efficient as we can.

We currently have a thread running with status updates on the XBMC development boards, head over there to check it out and see the latest information.  We would like to be able to submit a patch soon, but this is a very large task to achieve, there is still a LOT of work to do so if you are a programmer, please contact me as soon as possible to see how you can help out.  We setup our own subversion CVS for the development process, upon your acceptance to the team working on this, I will setup your access and give you the details to login and start working when you are ready.  Please include your areas of expertise when you contact me :)

There is a lot of attention being focused on this effort, the thread at the XBMC boards has been running for about 2 weeks and already has nearly 5,500 hits and about 60 posts so you can see there are a LOT of people watching the developments happening with the project and anticipating it's release.  This is a perfect opportunity for you to get involved with something that many people have been waiting for for a long time.

Regards,
Los93soL

UPDATE:  Apparently nobody here is interested in this, I am quite surprised by that.  Ysbox has done some more work, we now have LinksBoks sectioned in XBMC, it also keeps history, and forwards media files to the proper player for you now.  There is still quite a bit to do so if any of you are capable and intersted, get ahold of me!

I would definately use it if it were out.  I just can't help with the programming.

I would actually rather see it integrated into UnleashX though *wink wink*.

Since it will be running IN XBMC, would it then be possible to stream music and surf at the same time?

yip, can play movies at the same time too, can even go to sites like ebaumsworld.com and play videos or music from there or start streams from shoutcast, etc.  It is coming along very nicely, check out the development boards at xbmc's site to find out more!

Keep going on!

I like this feature.
Next to full DVD support, this linkboks integration is THE extension XBMC makes it perfect!

I will be posting some recent screenshots later tonight.  Hopefully they will generate some more interest.  The project is close to reaching a beta stage, unfortunately, the programmers working on the project are very busy these days.  We would like to keep the momentum going so a few more dev's to tidy things up would be very nice to have helping with the project.  You do not need to have extensive knowledge of web protocols, mainly we need people to help with the actual interface with XBMC and finishing up the GUI that has been started for LinksBoks.  Please get in contact with me if you think you can help.

Current screenshots as promised.  You can see there is some work to be done.

In the home screen:
(IMG:http://img199.echo.cx/img199/3755/screenshot0017sd.png)

It works:
(IMG:http://img197.echo.cx/img197/4642/screenshot0024ir.png)

GUI needs a little more work.  Goto in the context menu needs to be made into a button, assigned and ID, and removed from the context menu.  Our skinner can then make a button for it.  The idea is to use the context menu for quick access to more advanced features the average user will not use all the time but may need to access every once in awhile:
(IMG:http://img197.echo.cx/img197/4025/screenshot0032qc.png)

You can see the browser can download and forward media to the appropriate player.  You can also see where the GUI needs more work.  We need to get rid of the original LinksBoks menus and make our own for a cleaner integration.  The media forwarding code was very recently put back into the source and has a bug causing it to be unstable at this time:
(IMG:http://img197.echo.cx/img197/5633/screenshot0044fe.png)

Just another reason why we need to get rid of LinksBoks menus that are not being used.  This is actually a bug that was inadvertantly introduced during a change to correct a potential issue.  Pressing B while the browser is focused causes the original LinksBoks menus to popup:
(IMG:http://img36.echo.cx/img36/189/screenshot0058em.png)

Ahhh...using the XBMC virtual keyboard is so much easier to type out what you want then the system used in the original LinksBoks application:
(IMG:http://img36.echo.cx/img36/4087/screenshot0067hu.png)

Notice the text field at the top displays the title of the web page.  If the title is too long to fit, it scrolls across like an RSS feed.  This same text bar should be made selectable, pressing A on it should change its function.  For example, it will default to the title of the web page, pressing A will make it display the URL of the current web page:
(IMG:http://img36.echo.cx/img36/5369/screenshot0070uj.png)

The point to these screenshots is to show the current state of the work done.  For the most part the bulk of the work is done.  There are still a lot of things that need to be done/finished up to make for a more proper integration into XBMC.  I do want to stress that the browser works very well and efficiently within XBMC and that the programmers working on the project have put a lot of effort into what you see above.  I also want to stress the fact that the current development is still in ALPHA stages.  Hopefully the screenshots will get some more interest going with the project so it can be cleaned up and reach a BETA stage soon so that we can start allowing more people to test it and start reporting bugs that we missed.

The above work can be attributed to Ysbox, GeminiServer, BritneysPAIRS, and another person who wishes not to be revealed at this time.  Please give your feedback and help us see this project to a completion.

Regards,
Los93soL

Missed my chance to edit!  Anyways, thought some of you might appreciate the work done a bit more if you saw some screenshots of the standalone LinksBoks application as well.  To see the original application Click Here!

UPDATE:  First, sorry for the delay.  Ysbox has done some debugging on the .dll for links and nailed the bugs which were causing crashes with downloading, and he has redone the navigation system and made some improvements to it.  The source should be updated sometime tonight if all goes as planned.  There is still quite a bit of work to do and we still need dev support so if you know c/c++ please get in touch.

Kennelbound:  I don't know if you got your laptop situation straightened out or not, but if you are able to code again, please join us again...

Would it be appropriate to ask for dev support in an article on the front page?  Maybe that will get the attention of someone who doesn't check this particular forum.  I see this as being fairly newsworthy anyways.

I don't visit the dev. forum that much, but this looks AWESOME! The part where Linksbox can pass streams/parameters to XBMC gives the impression that it is a nice integration.

Downloading and surfing with Xbox Media Center. What's next? :luv:

You can listen to music at the same time, you can even have a video playing in the background while surfing!  Everyone is excited, but we need more dev's to help out with the project...can't imagine why so few people have stepped forward to help out with it.  This is a rather large project and still needs a bit of work so if you can help, please let me know.

More people working on it would be good, but it is still no guarantee that it will make it into XBMC.

It should not increase the xbe by more then 0.5mb and be dynamicly loaded.

Why?

XBMC is first and foremost a mediaplayer, and memory used by other things that drop its capabilaties to play just media (mp3´s, movies, subed movies etc) are on the maybe things to be included.

From this point on, when you would like to update your links source, all you need to do is right-click your Links folder and select "SVN Update".

Also, you can select the XBMC source folder as your SVN folder for the links code, but if you have any problems and would like to create a normal build after, you would need to redownload the XBMC source code. It's best to make copies to use until you know that it works!

I hope this little bit of information is useful to you guys.

The manual sounds very easy....yesterday morning i tryed it exactly this way....2 problems have to be added to this manual ;-)

1 After compiling, the "skins\p mayhem 3\media\*.png" from the links addon have to copy to the released version of VS .NET. Visual Studio NET doesn't include all the new pictures into the texture file.

2 With the XBMC sources of yesterday i got much errors from VS .NET @ the end of compiling procces

It only worked after i compared every *.cpp *.h etc. file line by line and moved the Links additions manually to the XBMC sources. That takes about 2 hours of work :-)

Sometimes i wasn't be sure if the differences in the files are really for the Links addon or normal changes in the XBMC sources. It would be i good help if ysbox and the other coders add a "///FOR LINKS!!" after each line of the links addon :-)

I decided to try this out and I couldnt get it to build right.

I checkedout the latest xbmc cvs, and linkstoxbmc. I copied all the files from linkstoxbmc into the xbmc code folder, was prompted to overwrite as previously explained. I then compiled a new build. Here's the problem, in the end a bunch of errors were listed that I never received before, and it wouldn't build a default.xbe file.

Is there something else I need to do, or is this currently incompatiable with the latest xbmc cvs?

I just always thought that xbins was the place to get the official and less buggy builds.  I have also searched the torrent scene to see if there was a release (with Links) but it doesn't seem to have made it there yet.

Will there ever be any kind of 'official' release of XBMC/Links?  Or will it only be available for those who have the means/knowledge to compile?

Becouse it is not in CVS.

I hope there never will be a build on XBins with linksboks added. (Atleast untill it is added to cvs)

Why? Read the whole thread and you will know....

But i guess people just dont care what we, the guys in the team, wants or thinks about this issue after reading this and lots of other threads about links2xbmc

You have a great guide for that posted earlier in this thread anyway... If you get compile errors, it's because I have to "sync" the links svn repository to the xbmc cvs state from time to time, in order to keep current with the latest additions in the xbmc files i have modified. In other words, I have to merge the latest changes in xbmc in the svn source files and if I don't, you may have an outdated version of those files and a up-to-date version of the others, hence the compile errors. There's no easy solution for this, you have to wait for the next time i do it...

That's all for now, and well, thanks for the kind words i've read and to everyone supporting this.

... only in the "Default" fontset though.

Then with the browser window focused you press B to bring up the menu, then "Setup>Font manager", and you can add "websans", "websansb" and so on.
It'll freeze for a while because it has to index every character in the font and that could probably be a little more optimized... If you're lucky, it will store all this info in the system\LinksBrowser\fonttable file the next time you go back to the home screen so you won't have to do this a second time.

Finally, make sure to check out in "Setup>Options Manager", that "Document>Font families>Variable" is set to "arial" (it should be).

I know everything could still be polished up but it's a start.

CODE

- re-synced to cvs just in case;
- modified font.xml files for all video modes and fontsets;
- included fonttable so that the arial font is automatically registered;
- moved the links builtin fonts out of the xbe section (it is read on demand from the file, so it should supposedly eat less memory on startup) : the release xbe is now 6.64MB;
- font settings are read from the xml

be sure to upload every file in the skin\PMIII and system\LinksBrowser before launching, and you should have nothing more to do to get the arial TTF font.

Error: PROPFIND request failed on '/links2xbmc'
Error: PROPFIND of '/links2xbmc': could not connect to server (http://opensvn.csie.org)

is it just being updated or something?  is anyone else getting this error?

as you can see from the pic, the bookmarks aren't working because bookmarks.html doesn't exist.  i'd like to create the file, but i don't know the format/syntax of what i want to type.  does anyone else have this problem, and if so, how did they fix it?

27-07-2005 changed: cleaned up the dll loader

When I open up xbmc.sln, only three projects are listed (guilib, xbmc, and XBFilezilla) as a result of this change in the XBMC CVS.  When trying to compile links2xbmc, I get an error message because this DLL Loader is missing.  It happens when it tries to compile files that were part of the links2xbmc patch.  Is there anyway to fix this?

EDIT: I tried going to File->Add Project->Existing Project and then opening the file DllLoader.vcproj from the xbmc\cores\DllLoader folder.  I'll post back later after I rebuild the solution to say if it worked or not.

Lol, that didn't work too well... 150 errors..  It didn't even create the default.xbe in the release folder.

I know that the links code doesn't affect scripts, but I read on the changelog of xbmc thtat scripts didn't work atm.  you said you had the latest version of links (and im assuming the latest version of xbmc?) so i was just curious about the whole scripts thing.

How do you get downloading to work?  When I go to download something it gives me and error saying cannot create file or directory.  I have the very latest build of XBMC.

If you could get the Java runtime environment working on Linksboks, you'd be my hero. Runescape on Xbox........w00t!

beerchug.gif   KEEP IT UP.

Gotta a problem though, I cant open a bookmark, I get this error: "Error loading file://Q\System\Linksbrowser\bookmarks.html" no such file or directory.

Is there a workaround or setting to be configured?

Thanks.

Vic10us mentioned we could use XBEL for the bookmark manager which is a standard used in many other browsers so your existing bookmark lists from firefox, opera, etc. will be compatible with Links.  That would mean it would be very possible to import existing lists. smile.gif  This has not been confirmed that it will be done this way, but I believe it is in the plans.

I've ran into a problem. Followed the steps:

1. I downloaded the august 2nd CVS (the changelog appears to go to august 1st - should I try downloading august 3rd?)

2. Got linksboks intergration stuff

3. Copied the stuff over to the xbmc source and proceeded to overwrite the files.

4. Ran 'Build.bat' - Yes I have the XDK, visual studio etc, but do I do this or go into Visual Studio and then build.

5. Copied the newly compiled XBMC over to my box.

6. Noticed that there was anew menu - 'The Web'.

7. However, when I click on this nothing happens. No new screen, nothing. Just carries on with displaying the home screen.

8. What have I done wrong?

FYI, our sources are now synced to the latest XBMC CVS (2-3 hours ago).

i think that testing implies testing with the latest cvs.  and also- i think that this is kind of final.. in a way.  xbmc is on-going and so is this (i think.... ysbox? is it?).  so its not really final but i don't think its beta.  what would you call it? blink.gif

@amfdfireinside

...I'm pretty much speechless, please read the entire thread and you will understand why we do NOT want people posting builds with links for distribution until it is ready.  If you don't do your own compiles and don't have the tools to compile on your own then you probably shouldn't be using it at this stage of the game.  That doesn't mean you can't test, it just means we will especially not provide support of any kind to anyone using a distributed build because there isn't much we can do to help since it usually requires a recompile.

That said, I think you have a misconception about what CVS is and what a point release is.  CVS (concurrent versioning system) is a place where developers (the ones who write and understand code) work on their program.  It allows them to work together as a group with online projects.  Because of the nature of CVS and the fact that it is "bleeding-edge" code, it may not always be stable and may not even always compile.  That is where point releases come in.  Periodically projects will call a "feature freeze", during a feature freeze nobody is allowed to commit any new features, the feature freeze is a period of time for fixing and stabilizing the code.  This is my explanation, in a nutshell.

Alright, one more thing I want to discuss here, you mentioned why compile a new build every couple of days, well, those of us that follow the project and contribute something whenever we can keep our builds fairly up to date because we always know what is going on.  XBMC is an open source project, that means the developers donate their time and their knowledge, they aren't getting paid anything to do this stuff, it's all free, please try to be a little more thankful in your future posts.  Now, you also mentioned every month or so it's only a VERY MINOR bugfix...um...there were well over 800 updates last month, there were also several issues fixed, skin changes, new features added, etc.  XBMC is a very active project, and this kind of activity is not uncommon to see, that's a lot more the a few minor bugfixes.

By the way, is THIS you?

Regards,
Los93soL

EDIT: Startup video/song?  Try startup sound, it's actually called skin sounds and you can customize them quite easily.  This should be asked to Team XBMC anyway, NOT US.  I will not get into this with you so just drop it.  The entire post is off-topic and unrelated and will not receive anymore attention from me.

NOTE THIS:

This thread is for developers and people that have RELEVANT questions regarding links integration to XBMC.

It is NOT a thread to:

1: ask for builds.
2: discuss how, where and when to get it.
3: just jump into. READ the whole thread befor asking a question!

Further dumbass post will just make ysbox and los93sol1 to ignore it and you will have no info at all on whats going on!

I dont know about anyone els, but im getting tired of this unless your a coder and know how to compile your own version you can have it. THATS MESSED UP.  If its not ready and all I keep seeing is "its better", "it improved", "Its smaller but its still not ready". Just keep it to yourself. If I compile it. I would be seed it in torrents. I feel like im being  screwed like "ha ha we're better than you. and you cant have it."

I really dont see the big deal about  releasing a public beta.

...And it's attitudes like that which have led to less frequent updates on the status of the project.  The reason for not releasing a public beta is simple, there are still a few things that you (you are the public) will complain or have a gripe about.  It COULD have been released a long time ago, but wasn't because that WOULD HAVE LED to floods of posts on the XBMC boards (note that this is not officially supported until it is in CVS and EVERYONE has it, hence it not being released to the public) with people having issues.  Since the topic is already a controversal one, it is a priority to make sure it is as stable as possible BEFORE it gets to the masses.  Hope this puts things into perspective a bit more for people.  Also, sorry if you feel you are being teased, but would you rather be left in the dark and not have any idea what the status is?  Please just be patient and when it is ready you will have it, I cannot stress enough that the dev's who work on this or anything related to XBMC are not being paid, they do this in their spare time and hopefully for fun.

Regards,
Los93soL

EDIT: To those who already know this, thank you so much for your support and comments.  Please remember to thank the dev's working on this as well. smile.gif

I understand everyone's viewpoint about public releases, but i also understand that there are many people who would like to use or try these new features and wont complain about bugs.  I use the xbmc beta dvdplayer and although it crashes sometimes, i haven't complained once.  I would also like to be able to try the linksbox integration, and i wouldn't complain about it but i'm not able to compile it myself.  I personally try to help people on the AV forum as much as possible and have tried to make a helpful tutorial that was pinned about home made VGA cables.  i understand the concern for keeping this project somewhat private, but it would be wonderfull if there was a way for people to earn some type of status that allowed them access to these beta projects.

my friend (who runs a much smaller site) grants certain people alpha keys who he knows wont complain.  its probably unreasonable for this to happen, but if there were alpha only sections (and there might be) and mods could allow people in and kick them out as well, that would be great.  maybe this is the wrong place to say this.

I also haven't been here too long, so if you want to hold that against me thats fine.  i use the seach feature constantly (although it works not so well), and i've read this whole intire thread.

I remember linksboks having all of these menu functions and configuration like settings.  I was wondering if these were removed for a reason, or maybe just not added yet and if they were possibly going to be added.

also, i know you can bring up the goto thing, but is there any reason there isn't an address bar?  or a status bar?  i think both of these were in linksboks.

note:  this isn't me bitching, i'm impressed and i'm not asking you to change anything, just wondering why some decisions were made and how things are going.

If you hit the white button it should bring up a menu with go to etc... click on expert mode if you have used linkboks before and you can get all your menus and such back.

Post by: leeloo5 on September 05, 2005, 07:04:00 PM
awesome, for some reason the text on that menu is unreadable for me so i only figured out the goto, now i got the expert mode to work.  great work.

not a bug really, but a note on the gui is that the gui image changes, however the webpage stays the same size so if i calibrate the ui in xbmc the overlay can cover up the stuff like the menu etc.  weren't sure if you guys were aware.  its fine the way it is, but it means i need to add overscan to my screen to be able to see the menu's, which is fine.

Obs: No complaints, huh?

bobjim17

I was pointing out some things that still need some tune up.  I'm not complaining i just wasn't aware if they new about these things.  I'm fine really with the way it is, and if it was never updated that would be fine too.

there's a difference between saying "help me, my xbox doesn't work because i put your program on and i want you to fix it now", and "there is this glitch i dont know if youre aware of".  no one else mentioned it so i figured id let them know.  most likely they all use a certain resolution where this never came into play.

JayDee:  Good idea, a few files have been added to the SVN, Changelog-Links.txt (renamed to avoid conflicts with XBMC CVS), Compiling.txt (same as the tutorial found in this thread on compiling from getting the sources to sending the build to your xbox), and finally Readme.txt (Notes from the developers and testing guidelines, will be nice to communicate with the end users)

If a developers feel like writing some code today they can do it, otherwise you can grab the last sync'd date, there are clear instructions for how to do it.

not that i wanna be an asshole, but what would be really nice is the possibility to use the standalone linksboks virtual keyboard instead of the imho shitty xbmc one.

Its just that i find myself being able to type alot faster with it, and im sure im not alone.

Just makes alot more sence than showing the pic of a keyboard on your tv screen
