mine never blew up (was a delta) but i had repaired several foxlinks for people, all with the same burned solder joints in the back, i fixed probably about 5 of these as much as a year before MS started sending the cables out

At the time that it happened to me, I had no clue what happened.  Year or more before MS officially recalled the cables.  I was testing a VGA cable I'd made when I heard crackling sounds.  I figured the sound was coming from the papers the Xbox was resting on.  Next thing I knew there were sparks flying out of the machine.  Needless to say, the PSU was toast.

I've been fixing the PSU units as I see them.

Here, the owner complained of hearing crackling sounds everytime he plugged the power cord.  With further inspection, I found the plug points burned -- with with a hole.

I ordered two of the replacement plugs just because they were free, but I don't use them on either of my Xboxes simply because they're ugly and bulky and take up too much space on my outlet strips. Never had any problems with the PSU, although I've been meaning to resolder them for sometime, just to be on the safe side.

Before the whole replacement thing my psu started sparking at a friends house, when we noticed, it was too late. I got a new psu off eBay, after re-soldering the plug didn't revive it. Now it works fine.

I would have also gotten a free cord from MS, but the serial sticker on the bottom my my box was gone so long ago.

I never had a problem until a few days ago, I think mine is ready to go.
I hear a low frequency, but high pitch sound coming from my PSU when the power cord is connected, all this while my Xbox is turned off.
It sounds very similar to the low frequency sound hear from your television when it's on but you have it on one of the empty video channels. You know the ones with the black screen and no sound.

It's pretty strange, the sounds kicks in a few minutes after I turn my Xbox off.
I unplug the power cord from the xbox and it goes away, obviously.
At this point I think my PSU is screwed but I'll get the replace power cord just to see if it makes a difference....

I have a 1.2-1.5 PSU having the same low level high pitch sound... neither the old or new cords solve this problem. Nothing seems burnt on the PSU...

I've got a 1.6 Xbox, which is too new to require a replacement power cord. No, it hasn't blown up yet either :-P

Have had my 1.0 since launch, no PSU problems....just the damned Thompson that broke down that had to be switched for a Sammy. Other PSU's have blown on modded boxes, but that was because of me. Was never really careful when I first starting to mod.

Mine didn't exactly blow up, but now it won't stay on for a few minutes before the replacement cord pops it off, so I guess mine has begun its demise..

1.0 bought launch night.

Never had any problems with it, but the solder joints were cracked, so I repaired them.

I haven't had any problems with mine (I am using the new replacement bulky cord now just to be sure though). I am using a pretty old Xbox (I believe a 1.0). I really should check the solder points just to be sure. They probably need some fixing because I use my box a lot.

P.S. I just found the Fast Reply button here. I have used it for quite a while at Neowin and liked it. I am glad the admins put it on here too. Except it defaults to email notification or replies which I don't like...

The PSU in my 1.0 Xbox hasn't yet died, but I had to re-solder the joints on the bottom a few months ago, because the plug would wiggle too much, and sometimes spark. Also, I've been using the chunky power cable for the last few months, and it hasn't had to be reset yet.

My original cable got hot and melted. Got replacement cable a year later and a note saying "You should replace your standard cable imediatly to avoid possible damage to your xbox system".
Only a year to late M$!

My psu blew up on me. It started sparking like crazy and smoking so I unplugged it. I opened it up and saw that it was a problem with the contacts on the connecter. Apparently they broke over time from unplugging the cable from the xbox. All I did to fix it was solder the points and It ran fine afterwards. Keep in mind that this was a version 1 xbox from when it came out and this was the only problem I've ever encountered.

My box's powersupply blew (solder joints), and the bulky replacement cable didnt even cut power to my xbox. I soldered it up and now it works fine.

There should be another option on the poll that says: No, I soldered up the points just in time.  That's what happened to me.  I had heard the crackling when I would plug it in, but when the news hit, I opened my box up and have never had a crackle since.  Another testimony to how great this forums is!

toasty.  Mine didnt blow up yet, but I have a foxfire on a 1.0 xbox...  foxfire Psu's blow apparently.  I think I heard the crackling noise one time, but it could have been crack I was smoking.  Anyways, I resoldered it with some mostly silver solder with a higher melting point... dunno if it helped but everything is still working just fine.  Now I use the replacement cord in my usual setup, but my xbox gets moved a lot and I don't take the big birtha replacement cord with me.

I got on the xbox website a few months ago pretty much told me to replace the cord....how likely is it that something like that would happen. I bought it used...

Mine never blew up. I still have it somewhere, but I replaced it with a Lik-Sang switchable one so I could bring my xbox to Germany with me. That has been working perfectly ever since I dropped it in, and the old one I never remember having problems with it.

Funny, I ordered my free cable from M$, but I never got it in the mail. Oh well it was probably that huge ass bulky thing anyways...

My PSU never had a problem, but i am ready for the time it blows up. But i have have it for 2 or 3 years directly connected to the wall and still running and beautiful. Maybe it has to be because my PSU is so FULL of that white glue i cant see most of the parts.

As a mod chip installer I have replaced about 10 power supplys. 3 of them had the typical power connector broken off the cicuit board with black arc'ing all around.

I am glad they break so often. I get to make lots of money fixing them for people locally. Its better then having to ship your xbox to M$ and wait forever.

I don't think so. Australia probably uses a different standard for power, so they must be using a different power supply. I think it is just the NA consoles that had the flaw.
