Title: "fenced In" Project
Post by: mikelspencr on May 09, 2006, 10:37:00 AM
i had a smart idea for a case mod...

cut most of the X out, clean it up real nice, and put this green chicken-wire kinda stuff under it, and then finish it with plexiglas....

it'll give it a look as if there was a fence under the lid, and maybe i'll leave the shielding, or take it out...

my only problems:
1. dont got plexi, i got plastic cd cases that i can trim to work...
2. dont got a dremel, any suggestions on how to get the lid cut?
3. cant find my hot glue gun... hot glue would work, right?
4. i work, so this might take a while...

PICS will be coming of what ive already done to my baby...until then, any suggestions, comments, flames...post em

Well, this is is what I would suggest..

First, get the proper tools- if your gonna rush a mod then its not gonna turn out near a nice in the end

And two, Try it.. This could be aswome.. (if I'm getting your idea correctly). But also remember cooling. Your xbox has to be able to 'breathe'. As for attaching the fencing to the X, I would use bondo. It easy to use and when it dries is as solid as a a rock. As for the plexiglass to the Fence, I'd probably use some type of clear epoxy to attach the two. This is my two cents.

Good Luck,
mstandlee

(p.s. take the shielding out Imo. Unless you painted it, then it could be cool (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) )

yeah, yeah, dozer... my english is crappy, even tho i known it my whole life..

but yeah, in regards to the plexi, i cant afford it...even tho i got a job LOL
and the only dremel in my house belongs to my dad....he wont let me use it even a little

ill post some pics when i get the camera tonight...

and to clarify how it would look...

imagine the x cut as if i was gonna have a DVD window, cept all 4 points would be cut..
when you look in the windows, you see this green chicken-wire kinda stuff in there, and the metal shielding...

IMO this would kick arse

Open your pic.'s up in paint, then save them as a jpeg file instead of a bitmap. This will cut the size of them down alot.. beerchug.gif

I don't mean to sound like a dick or anything...but...you have a job but can't afford plexi? It's literally two dollars...
Title: "fenced In" Project
Post by: mikelspencr on May 10, 2006, 01:58:00 PM
is it really only two bucks? man, this whole time i was led to believe that it was 30 to 40 bucks....weeeeeelllllll that solves that problem.... and no i usually dont got 40 bucks to spare...
got bills, you know...

anyways, update on teh project...

i cant figure out how to get the shielding free...i got it off before, and pucnched a hole in it so that i can wire up my spinning jewel. when i punched the hole, it was big enough for two wires, maybe three, and now i cant fit the rest of my crappy soldering job through the hole...any suggestions on how to make this hole bigger without needing to resolder? i borrowed the iron....if that answers any questions

second, how the hell am i gonna get the plastic lid cut? i brainstormed, and thought about  torch.gif  the plastic with a hairdryer, cause someone had a pic of how he melted the lid tryna get the jewel off, so that would work...and then trimming it to what i want... flamethrower.gif

third, basically i got nothing done...damn i feel crappy dry.gif

i got two fans on the way, thanx to acex008...

and now, im gonna try the guide from you, funnyperson (although, with a name like that...can i trust you? lol)

sprained my wrist skating, so this is gonna be even more fun tryna do... got teh fencing cut, and violently ripped the spinning jewel off, cause it was loud, and kinda retarded looking...and now gonna cut the lid sometime this weekend (got my lady to hang with, yes im whipped and dont care...)

done: back to stock-ish lid, fencing ready, plexi ready, wrist screwed...12 pack root beer finished

not done:more root beer, cut lid, add fencing and plexi, put back together, post pics, play madden

damn fan wont work...i cut the fan to fit and got the wires running to the HD power, like in the tutorial, and still wont work...really dont wanna solder, so i guess im just gonna wait until my fans get here..

in the meantime, time to cut the lid...any suggestions on how well a hair dryer will work? i know you can warp teh plastic with it, but could you heat it up enough to just push the plastic apart and sand it smooth?   ghetto, yes, but i dont care..

questions,comments, flames?

that would warp all the plastic around it soo much, and you would need a heat gun, not a hairdryer.

use a dremel bud.

quick question...if i just leave the holes cut out, with the fencing underneith, no plexi, wouldnt that keep the box cooler? wuld it make much of a diff?
oh and i painted the lid with a stone-kinda paint...pics tommorrow...

comments, questions, flames...throw em

EDIT: if i decide to use leds around the edges of my holes, how big should i get? resistors? if you know a good combo of the two, let me know so i can search them...

finally got the painting done, and finished cutting...laid the fencing under neeth, got it all back together...

i tried to upload my pics, but my computer at home was dickin on me...so i may not get them up till later...

but yeah, i spent two days cutting the holes in the lid, and sanded...looked pretty crappy, until i sanded... and sprayed...after i got up this morning, i sprayed the rest of the case with this paint that looks like granite... i think i saw a few people do this "color" and i happened to have it around, so i used it...

after that, cut out the fencing, and laid it in...made it stay with some solder...hee hee hee happy.gif  ( uhh.gif thats not gonna come off later, will it?)

anyways, next, i cleaned my jewel, and couldnt get the few scratches off, and so i was tryna use  lighter to smooth it out (i thought it might work) and when i saw that it made the jewel dark, i was like "hell YEAH!!" so i flamed the rest of it, and made it smoky. i was tryna clear it so i could put fencing under it, but i like this better...

i promise, pics will be up here soon...oh and thanks acex008 for the fans, hoping to get them very soon...

from Wilkpedia

Bodge is British slang for a for a clumsy, inelegant or inadequate solution to a problem. (See also Kludge.)

A bodge job can also mean a job that was completed quickly and carelessly, or without using the correct tools, even if no mistakes were made. A successful bodge is an example of creative engineering.

It is said that the two main tools used by bodgers are Duct Tape (for when something should be stuck, but isn't) and WD-40 (for when something is stuck, but shouldn't be.)

Bodging is a firm favourite among farmers and those willing to get a job done, but not always properly.

alrighty, sry for the delay on the project...been busy...

anyways, got a few questions:
1: how do you hook up the bigger fans (80mm) to make it work? i tryed to hook it up to the HDD, but the fan wouldnt start....help????
by the way, followed the tut that was given, but he said to solder to an ORANGE wire? what the hell?
2: Ok, got the new HDD, and used xboxhdm on it, anything else i need to do? or can i just launch it in there now? if this is it, DAMN that was simple...
3:ok not really a question on my subject...why do people charge so much for a simple softmod? i got a friend that wants me to soft mod, and hook up his new 160gigger... he told me that someone else would do it for the cheap price of 70bucks!!! i said id do it for less...so, if anyone wants a softmod, and upgrade, i got the stuff and the time...pm me...

your new pics are not showing up, was just curious to see how  this thing turned out like..

i havent gotten into the case modding to much (not yet anyhow)besides painting systems, the controllers., and any other accessories that go along. plus i paint my friends stuff to. and i am prepping to put a flip screen on my xbox, or i have seen some pics of people taking the screen and installing it on the top, like looking down on the case and the screen is like built in the area where the jewel is, just cut a square in the case and do that..

like i got custom paint jobs on my:

saturn
nes
genesis
snes
psx
dreamcast
ps2
2 xboxes

but i dont have the saturn or the genny anymore (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)

good luck with this mod

almost had my new torx tool, but ups didnt let anyone know they were outside, and figured we werent home...coming back today...and i will be here to get it... need to install that new hdd.

and still waiting for my fans...is that the only thing wrong with my box? cause i plug it in, and it flashes on for a second, turns off, and then frags, or in my case, ARAG (alternates red and green)  anything else might be wrong? help if you know anything about this...

Imo you should make the windows bigger and even. Paint looks good though, does it feel rough to the touch or does it just look that way? I'm doing kinda the same thing on my slim with the screen behind the plexi.

IPB Image

IPB Image

And about not putting in any plexi, dont do that. Your xbox would become soo dusty and it wont make a noticable diff. in your temps. If you dont want to buy plexi just grab some old cd cases and cut them to the shape you need, instant, cheap window tongue.gif . Hell thats what I used when I started cutting windows. Good luck

yeah, i had mentioned soemthing about using cd cases at the beginning. i was told not to, cause they would suck...but now, i will defenetly do that...thanks and in regards to the touch, its rough and freakin awesome in person....working on getting better pics... camera aint mine...im gonna put the shielding back under the lid, and if i can find the leds and resistors, i will get some light around the holes...

i like the holes the way they are, dont plan on making them bigger...just for info...gonna spray the shielding where it needs sprayed to match the lid, so that it doesnt look like crap...

question: whats the best site to get leds and resistors? best meaning cheapest. i want 5mm green leds, what resistors, how many for 30 leds? (15 on each hole) where to hook them up at?

got a question...and if i can, gonna put this in the newbie forum...if thats not allowed, sry...i just need a really fast answer...
ok, used the upgrade to 80mm fan, and hooked it up to my HD power, no solder, but i had a way of doing it where it got power (and i first used my new HDD)... the thing is, i hook up the cables to the box, without the lid on, turned it on, and got nothing the thing started, shut down, started, shut down, and started and stayed on...just fragging, nothing on the screen, and it did the same thing with the original HDD, so i know that the new one wasnt causeing the issue...

p.s. i tryed to eject the dvd drive, samething...wont do anything...

HELP!!!!

im now very happy, and a little pissed...

i got the box finished for now....might add leds laters....i really wanna play the xbox again...

i cant play yet cause i lifted a trace, and now wondering if i can solder a wire to the two holes on either side of the trace, if i can, id do that now...

got the new stock fan in, cant test it yet cause the trace is fraging my box, and the fan wont spin... sprayed the shielding with that stone paint, and it looks quite nice... love.gif

had a new idea...for the hdd activity, put the leds in the controller ports...lighted ports, and activity lights...

not gonna do that for a while, but yeah...any suggestions on that?

1->what leds would look good? what resistors to match? how many?
2->aint upgrading my hd anymore, if anyone wants to buy it, im selling...if youll pay shipping, and will exchange for the resistors and leds (green maybe). 40 leds and enough resistors...if someone could solder the resistors on so that i can just connect the stuff...ill take that as sale price...if you can pay shipping...hit me up if you want to talk about it...

so a total of 26 leds correct?

i would do 3 bux for each side set already wired and ready to go and then probably 5-6 for the top + shipping

but this is with them already hooked up to molex connectors

and did you want the jewel leds or no or what? and could you tell me where exactly you are planning to stick the leds.

box_69 -> i just want around all four sides...if you can set it up so that i can put a wire or two into where i need to, like, on the hd power (5v or 12v...let me know...) that would be awesome...and yes...about 20-26...whatever you think looks good...i just want full color underglow...i dont know how this would work...but if you can wire some together for under my lid...i got the lid cut, the x is cut out with the jewel still in...and the sides have a line connected to the jewel...i hope that helped....if you can wire whatever looks good...ill buy it...pm me...ill try to get a pic...

Dr Tek -> i have permission to flame you...from myself...wtf? muhaha.gif  muhaha.gif and this is an old post...my box looks a lot better now...i just dont wanna create something new...
