Hacked Xbox1 Backwards Compatibility v5829 Leaked
Posted by XanTium | March 16 00:16 EST | News Category: Xbox360

A hacked version of the Xbox1 Backwards Compatibility v5829 (November 2007) has been leaked yesterday. It wasn't supposed to be out (yet), but as it's all over the internet now I guess we could just mention it too. Was originally made for devkits, but should work just fine on jtagged homebrew 360s too:
Quote

I've attempted to remove any limits on the emulator, although i left in game ratings checks in case you dont want your little ones to play violent games :)

This can be toggled in the dashboard anyway. The following hacks were done to the emulator:
   * Xbe signature checks removed (lets you run unsigned code)
   * Xbe section hash checks removed (lets u run hacked xbes)
   * Game region checks removed (region free baby!)
   * Game media checks removed (play games from your hard drive)
   * Debug/Devkit xbes supported (run your own xbox1 code)
   * Attempt to play unsupported games (doesn't mean it will work hehe)

To install this, copy the Compatibilty folder to your devkits Y drive.
You may want to remove any existing files, although this should overwrite all files.

Note: it will boot (some) Xbox1 homebrew as well, however don't expect everything to work perfectly. And no ... XBMC will not run fully on it (don't expect video playback etc).

Official Site: n/a, leaked
Download: n/a (contains MS copyrighted code)

Oh...but I sure do hope someone tries! (A major task, I'm sure. And their so tied up on the the non-Xbox versions, I doubt it'll happen) But just that fact that it loads, that's sweet!

If it'd work at least as good as it does on Xbox1 I'd be thrilled!

Would love to retire the Xbox1.

This is surprising news. I'll be very interested to find out which games run (and to what degree) that aren't on the official list (like Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath).

It's ran all the games i've thrown at it so far.  Most homebrew apps didn't run though, or ran with problems, that I expected.

So far I've run these perfectly fine on my JTAG unit:

Fusion Frenzy NTSC
Halo 2 NTSC
Halo 1 NTSC
Halo 2 Killtrocity Modded Map discs (1 and 2)
Burnout 3: Takedown NTSC
The Simpson's Road Rage NTSC
Rallisport Challenge 2 NTSC
Jet Set Radio Future NTSC
Sega GT 2002 NTSC
Crimson Skies NTSC
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic NTSC

Latest T3CH XBMC Build, Quake3, and Windows ce.net (lol) did not load, or caused a hardlock, that's the only homebrew i've tried so far.

Why do i get prompt for a system update when i launch my xbox1 game (in this case project gotham 2) i have xbox live sign in disabled on my console and it's actually connected and starts downloading the update. hmm ? will that update mess up my jtag system?

quick edit- i had to configure the network options in the 360 settings. just make a fake gateway number and it can't connect. just thought you all should know! =)

I installed the files but my games wont run. I load the files onto my flash drive and launch the xbe with XeXmenu and it tells me the game could not start. I also tried burning it to a disk and the same thing happened. The only way I could get it to work was by creating a god file and using god2xb1. Anyone know why this is?

I had converted a few games the other day which ran fine - without xbox1 hacks.

I tried wallace & gromit project zoo and it said it was unsuported & wouldn't run, however after applying this hack the game now works fine, albeit a few sound glitches but the gameplay is 100%.

Thanks to the guys who released this one.

Mame360 is great, I'm glad its out there, but there are a few isues with the emu. Some games don't work, which are working in newer versions (golden axe return of Death Addar is one), the vysnc issue sucks. It would be nice to have a filter there too.

My Son's favourite game - Midtown Madness 3 - won't load unfortunately sad.gif

ISS 2 works, but there are issues - when there are more players on screen, it slows down gameplay compared to when there's only two or three players and it plays too fast!

There was talk about a replacement front-end to set the emulation options - anyone know any more about this?

I really only think it's worth ppl mentioning the games that the 360 couldn't boot normally.

Apparently someone found a way to get XBMC working on a 360 neway, I'm not sure why anyone would want any of the other XB1 apps (xcept cool novelty value)

yeah!!!! As cool as MAME360 is, it seems it's quite outdated patch-wise. No-one has released their source etc.. for this one. Pity as it only seems to run about 60% of what's out there. Wish someone could patch it ;-) HINT Nudge HINT |;-0  Pleeeaase.......

PS: Cool Xb1 Emu with all the restrictions pulled means I might not have to mod an old one I've got sitting just to play Matrix Reloaded etc.. Alltho an FTP internet client homebrew thingy would be cool, Maybe it could get around some of the restrictions on getting NXE to route on the interweb ;-) if u catch my drift.......  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/ph34r.gif)

True, the games I posted earlier are covered under the backwards compatibility update from MS.  That doesn't rule out that the person/people who made this hack broke something in the emu that causes glitches with games that once worked on the retail emu.

Getting a nice compiled list of what runs and doesn't run with the hacked emu would be nice, have one place to see what's good and what isn't even if it was covered under the retail update.

It would be enjoyable to see achievements for old Xbox 1 games (Halo, Halo 2, etc...).  Even though these achievements would be superfluous, it would make me play the games through again.

Anyone able to test phantom crash please? My all time fave xbox 1 game, plays far too slowly on the normal 360, I also find it amazing that nobody has ever hacked this game up to make thier own levels and that, esp as there is only 3 maps in the normal game.

also can anyone tell me if i use my hard drive from my retail xbox live 360 on my jtagged will it mess anything up / get me banned or ? - I want to remove the xbox1 compatability from it to have a little more space as it`s only 20GB & i have 160GB in my jtagged machine that id welcome xbox1 compatability with biggrin.gif

i`ve never had the guts to try it as i`m completely addicted to phantasy star universe & losing my account would kill me. thankyou fellas biggrin.gif

I've been playing around with this. Got Beyond Good & Evil working (not officially supported) and tried the regionfree feature by booting Black NTSC on my PAL machine.

BG&E did not play in fullscreen, though. Looked like non-stretched 720x576 on my 720p resolution.

Soul Calibur 2
Tony Hawk 3 (2 and 4 work fine)
Prince of persia warrior within (the two other POP works fine)
Grand Theft Auto San Andreas (GTA 3 and Vice City work fine)

Wonder why (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)

Beyond Good and Evil boots, has some flickering issues in some parts, FPS during the hillya hoverboat areas is like 5fps, barely playable, game also has a tendency to freeze an image into the frame buffer when Peyj cutscenes show you something special, which continuously gets redrawn obscuring your view, if you trudge through you can get it to go away though

If you are not happy with recent development on the scene just don't say it.
I know NXE can do mp3 and a lot of thing that the xbox 1 emulator does BUT it's just one step over maybe something else.. who knows. People are not trying to search stuff, people are testing, developping and creating ideas. I'm a big fan of UnleachX dashboard and avalaunch dashboard so it's just fun to see all those old dashboard working on our jtag 360 (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Why are you still on XeXMenu? It's been forgotten in favor of FreeStyle which has been skyrocketting in development since it became open source. The latest version can launch .xbe's.

Originals:

Prince of Persia - The Two Thrones    -    works perfectly so far
Sudeki    -    works perfectly so far
Metal Gear Solid 2 - Substance    -    works perfectly so far
SSX On Tour     -     menu works fine, but the game gets unplayably slow (at least the PAL vesion)

Single-layer backups:

SSX Tricky     -    the game itself works fine, but can't save
Stranger's Wrath     -     menu loads, but the text is unreadable, the game loads then crashes with a message (the game is not compatible blah blah blah)

And does anybody have any information regarding the custom frontend which enables setting the emulation options? Because it would be interesting. Creating custom emulation profiles, sharing them with the community... Maybe we could get almost all game working fine - without the help of Micro$hite.

i think so , i copied the compatibility folder on to partition 2 and replaced the one that was there

do i need to do something else ?

thx

Alot of people don't know this, Think this should be stickied somewhere about xbox 1 compatibility. But the emulator isn't enough to get xbox 1 games to boot. I had this problem awhile back. You need the hdd partition fixer to add the missing partition if formatted with xbr. Then you need all the partition 2 files. The backwards compatibility update or the hacked emulator isn't all the files needed. You need all the files that where on partition 2. You can either ask a friend or get them off a real ms hard drive. This is around 250MB worth of files.

I can't get xbe's to show up in Freestyle 1 RC10.  How do you do it?  Also, how do you get Xbox1 games to play from the hard drive?  A tutorial for installing and running the compatibility thing would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks.

what about users using a MS hard drive? I have a 20gig HDD for my 360

all i did was take 'Compatability' and overwrite the one that was originaly on my MS HDD.

I did this, and I can't boot unleashx, or certain xbox1 emus that have been reported booting.

am I missing something for my MS 20gig HDD???? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)

EDIT = ok, found out there are 2 Compatability folders. I overwrote the one in the 'hddx' and now unleashx boots. going to try other homebrew.

EDIT 2 = for some reason, the 2nd time I tried booting unleash, it took nearly a minute to come on, now for the 3rd time I tried to boot unleashx, i just have a black screen after I'm sigined out of the 360

EDIT 3 = hmm, seems if unleashx is running right off of the HDD and not USB, it will load.

No. You must use partition fixer to create partition 2.

Thanks. I used the partition fixer and am able to run xb1 games now. However, after I overwrote the compatibility folder on the hddx partition, I tried to launch neogenesis emulator. It froze my xbox, and I got E71. Rebooted to E71 again and then unplugged box and plugged back in for normal boot.

Next I tried to boot xsnes9x and was successful, and it would load a game, but I couldn't see it on my screen.  I used the guide button to go back to NXE and then got E71 again.

I wiped modded compatibility and rewrote originals and haven't had another E71 for a while.

FYI I have a falcon with XBR8955v3 and am running on a MS VGA cable to 1680x1050 monitor. I'm looking forward to a more stable version of this. The only reason this was appealing was so I could play my tried and true emulators with NO ACHIEVEMENTS. But this defeats the purpose of no achievements since it clearly puts snes9x and neogenesis on my game history lol. Spoofing the xbe ID is an option but not worth the trouble if my favorite emulators don't even run. Was worth looking into.

To whoever put this together, thanks for the effort.

I've tested the NES emulator from the BAED. The BAED launcher itself didn't work for me, but was able to get into the NES folder from Xexmenu (yes I still use this) Hit the default.xbe within the NES folder and it loaded with no problems. I also tried Atari 2600, works, but, very slow, and the Genesis didn't load up at all. I will try the rest of the emu's at a later time. BTW, the HQ2 filter in the NES emu will slow it down big time.

i tried medafenix's nes emulator, runs great (some sound issues).  MAME for the XBOX 1 works great, can play some roms MAME 360 cannot actually.  unfortunatley Surreal 64 doesn't work for me, nor does Xport's wonderful PSX emulator.

All my games work except these:

Soul Calibur 2
Tony Hawk 3 (2 and 4 work fine)
Prince of persia warrior within (the two other POP works fine)
Grand Theft Auto San Andreas (GTA 3 and Vice City work fine)

Wonder why sad.gif

All are supported except Prince of Persia.

Spent about an hour playing SoulCalibur 2 last night, so it definitely works.

Jasper 360 connected via HDMI - Think it's running at 1280 x 720 but TBH I can't remember.

All I did was connect my Official 120GB HDD to the PC using a USB-HDD cable (data migration) and copied the Compatibility folder from the release into Partition 2 via Xplorer360.

Just a big thanks for the 'leak', glad to see not everyone is all elitist and wanting to keep everything in their own little masturbatory group.
The amt of Jtagged consoles isn't huge, so these sorts of leaks aren't the problem that they would be if all 360s were exploitable.

Plowing my way through learning with the devkit in the hope of one day being able to do some porting, my programming skills are rusty, but someone has to have a go at a more current Mame and XBMC type program one day, so I'm stopping whining and doing some work. I probably won't get to that level, but might as well have a go.

Crazy taxi (NTSC) works fine

Out of curiosity, I tried Crazy Taxi and it doesn't work fine. It has mild slow down after you play for a few minutes, but then the game catches up. However, slow down becomes greater and permanent after playing for ~30 minutes. Also, certain textures do not load correctly, or if at all (i.e. the street far ahead is missing).

Luckily, all the games we actually want to play are on the compatibility list.

I was going to try a lot more games, but out of the time it takes to view the default.xbe, convert them, and upload them, I'm done with it. I'm not sure if too many people are paying too much attention to emulating xbox 1 games, or people just don't have a xbox 1. Either way, the games still work fine on a xbox 1, and xbox 1's are still very easily and cheaply obtained. Nice to have the option of emulating xbox 1 games, but I personally feel it's something that shouldn't have too much attention right now (or if ever).

I don't understand why this wasn't released to the public.. I get the idea behind it people didn't want users to stick with XB1 homebrew, and the emulator is still buggy as shit.. But for loading our games its pretty sweet.. and some of the homebrew works with it so thats a plus until their is a native port (NES and N64 plx?) I appreciate the work of the original author, and I disagree with the method of release.. But.. its awesome. Thanks.

Did the official unhacked emulator have lots of slowdown with DOA3 & DOAU?

Looks like the games are struggling to run at even 30FPS with this hacked emu even though on the Xbox1 they ran at a solid 60FPS.

I've found plenty of other games that have lots of slowdown too like Jet Set Radio Future.

DOAU worked perfectly for me on both emulators, official and hacked  smile.gif

don't know about DOA3 since the disc has been missing for a long time and I don't have a backup of it

Edit: ps. did you delete the original emu files or just replace them? because if you just overwrite them you might face some issues

I just tested some of  the unsupported xbox games i have and here is list.
ALL of them WORKED Great!!!!

Splinter Cell Chaos Theory
Splinter Cell Stealth Action Redefined
Madden '08
Tiger woods '05
Fight Night Round 3

I played Chaos Theory from start to finish on my 360 using my XBL machine, no jtag no hacked emo files, just all official setup, no probs here? i have the NTSC version if thats any different

Double check the compatibility list, they didn't list it as Splinter Cell Chaos Theory, they listed it as Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell® Chaos Theory™

Can someone else please confirm the status of PRINCE OF PERSIA: WARRIOR WITHIN ?

--retail disk preferrably for the source of the test.

We know that 2 of the 3 games in in that POP series works fine with this new XBOX1 emulator, but its was reported by one "dubious" source on page two of this thread, that WARRIOR WITHIN did NOT work for him;

But that same source was subsequently proven wrong about SOUL CALIBER, suggesting that maybe their game rips are bad etc...thus hope exists for WW compatability.

WW had a great GODSMACK heavy metal sound track, simmilar to the music game play style in the God of War series.  That WW sound track alone is worth playing thre game again, plus the game itself is also great.

Since you sound like you really want to know, this one does not load even to the title screen. Locks up after Ubisoft splash screen.

The Xbox has to be modded to work with that? What is Dev Kit? My 360 is unlocked and banned (dash 8955). I´ve copied the Compatibility folder to partition 2 of my HD, but when I try to run an Xbox 1 game, the system return that I have to download the game again.
So it won´t work for me?
Sorry for so many questions, but I´m new in 360´s club.
Thanks a lot for your attention.

Me dubious? Come on smile.gif

Ive got`n all my games to work now, except Prince of Persia Warrior Within. It freezes on the intro movie.
To get Tony Hawk2 to work, i had to switch res from 1080i to 480p.

26 games working, 1 not working. Not bad smile.gif
A few games have low framerate, unfortunatly Amped 1 is one of them. Amped 2 plays great though.

Had it been a Yes/No question, you would have gotten such a reply. Fact is, there are about three questions in the one garbled post.

Copy the Compatibility folder from the release to a USB stick.

Start XeXMenu.
Select the USB version of Compatibility and select 'copy'.
Paste the USB copy of Compatibility into the HDDX: drive.

Done.

James Bond - Everything or Nothing (PAL)(original disc) working beautifully. Played for around an hour. This games still beats QoS. Wasn't Backwards Compatible originally.

Going to try PAL version of Rocky (not Rocky Legends) which isn't supposed to be compatible.

Edit: Rocky works fine too.

Midtown Madness 3 not working for me either (like somebody else also reported in the thread). Wont get past the xbox splash screen.

Really great emulator ! smile.gif

Yes majority of Xbox1 games are launching on it ! Why don't make a Xbox1 game compatibility list on another post ? Taking all comments here (who test games) and reporting on it ! Just recapitulate all on the first comment of the post ... No ?

Just an idea, because to see what games have been tested ... there are 9 pages to see ... and we quickly can forget what we've read before ...

Just a little idea (sure i'm not the only one ta have it). Anyway great to report results ! Thanks ! And this guy rocks ^^ (the one who hacked Xbox1 Emulator).

Ah and I've tried Def Jam Icon Fight For New York (One the greatests game on Xbox1 ^^) doesn't works ! sad.gif

Ah last thing : nobody can hack the emulator making him rescaling game to 16/9 ? Because many games are launching in 4/3 ... on 16/9 FullHD TV it's a little ... disappointing ... (after all .... argh i've forget it name ... but a chip is here on the Xbox360 for rescaling operations ...) On maybe 10 games tested, only Halo 2 and Auto Modellista are running 16/9 mode ! Or maybe it need a modification on the XBE gamefile ?

Otogi 1 and 2 works perfectly!

So does The Suffering 1, didnt test 2. So does Burnout Revenge, Mortal Kombat Shaolin Monks, MK Deadly Alliance, Obscure, Tenchu Return from Darkness.

They all work perfectly.

Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath doesnt work

Did you actually play MK Shaolin Monks?

I tried to play it today and it seemed to work ok until I got to the Fatality section of the tutorial level. The white button (Fatality stunner) doesn't work and you can't advance any further since you have to perform a fatality move in order to pass the level.

Has anyone had similar issues?

lol that made me laugh, internet drama at its best.

[21:07] <MTW> nor will it change the fact that I am far beyond you in any measurable matter

lmfao, I think we can safely say elitest twat.

[21:09] <MTW> releasing isn't a good thing.
[21:09] <MTW> only gives nubs shit they shouldn't have

[21:17] <MTW> you jtag guys are quickly  running out of good will from the real scene. the more you steal from us, the less we will release

I thought this elitest circle didn't want to release stuff? Im guessing some members did want to release the Snes emu for example?

[21:17] <MTW> a loser with a jtag.
[21:17] <MTW> making apps for other losers

Thankfully not everyone thinks like that, look at XBMC for the Xbox... Im sure many great things are going to happen for the 360 either way.

Not everyone can code, however i'm sure a lot of people like myself have a lot of respect for people who do bring the everyday jtagged 360 user great homebrew content for free smile.gif

There is Image Browser in Xbox Backup Creator. That's what I use. I'm sure there are specific tools for it, but this works good.

that IRC log is a joke!

he must be some guy with ego problems, wanting to have only 10 friends in IRC and be the man among them ...

what a dumbass,i thought i've seen it all!

the thrill to code something for xbox is to release it, and you'll get much more kudos for that , that if u didn't...

good god. there  are some idiots in this world.

If what MTW is saying is true... "not releasing is the true scene", than I think forums and web sites like this shouldn't exist cause there is no point being isolated from the "real scene", feels like they want to be mafias now....  rolleyes.gif  hahahahahahahahhaha  jester.gif

My god man how the hell hard is it to use GOOGLE?? It will give you tons of methods to do what you are asking. Its not rocket science you know.

But anyways here is a link to xbox image browser. If you cant figure out how to use it then there is no hope for you.

Just use your original disc to copy the game to your 360's HDD.  You shouldn't have to burn a DVD if you have the original disc.

Anyone got any idea if this is still being developed?  I'd jump on it and jtag my console to use it, but with people claiming some previously BC xbox titles are now bugged bothers me a bit, as I'd prefer to be able to use this, and keep functionality with all BC xbox games without having to swap files every time I wanted to play something else that might be broken with this hack.

the hacked files on xbins are lame-0.. do not use those ones.. those ones are only unlocked for playing a few extra titles and removed the media lock.. there is another set online that will let you play everything,,, u just have to look harder (these new files still have alot of bugs too )

the date on the zip files i think says" september 07"  not 'August" from xbins

^^Are you sure it's september 07?  I googled and I see the leaked one being november 07.  So something is off if you're saying it's september 07.  That or I'm losing it lol.  Help would be appreciated to clear up the matter.

Uploaded the Compatability folder to hdd1 via Freestyle Dash 2.
Upped Halo to it but when I try to start it displays: "The game could not start. Please download the game again. For more help, visit www.xbox.com/support"

How can I fix this?

Thanks,

Dennis

You must actually go to the microsoft and install the legit compat files first. There are files that get put on a separate partition on your 360 that are exclusively for XB-Original play.

An alternate method is to create the partition yourself, should be partition2, using hddcompatfixer (found in the usual places)

Then you must copy all correct files to both partitions 2 and 3.

I have a little problem here.

I have the 5829 emulator like its here said in the thread. I also downloaded the compat patch from 2006 (there was no other on the ms site except for the 9199 update).

So I tried to install the compat update with the xexmenu and clicked a on the screen. Some files were updated, I think.

When I try to start House of the Dead 3 (yeah I got it as an Original, shame on me!), the screen goes to the whit xbox screen and then I cannot press any buttons eg. the guide button and so on. The box just crashes. Even with the original files on it.

I put a 500gb HDD in my box and used the patcher to create partition2 (hddx). Is there an error or is there something I have to do to get it to run again?

On my not jtagged XBox the game runs fine.

I installed this hack about two months ago on my Jtagged Xbox 360. It worked great until I updated to dashboard 12416 to play Need for Speed Hot Pursuit. But after updating, none of my Xbox1 games were working anymore. It just freezes (unable to do anything except turning
Does anyone else experience this problem? If so, is there a solution? Because I'd love to play my xbox1 games again.

I'm pretty sure his problem was solved by adding dash launch to his console. I'm pretty sure he was the guy who need help on my website earlier tonight. Here's the thread if anyone needs anymore detail on what I told him to do: http://insomniacgame...games-jtag.html

all the others i had that were on the list worked ok

I tried playing Shrek SuperSlam (best mutliplayer versus game ever even though it's based on a kids' movie) on my XBOX 360 and it says I need to go to www.xbox.com/games for an update to support and no luck there???

So, this let's me start halo 2 from a separate media device as well as from a disk, and then immediately asks for a system update in either case, without a systemupdate folder. When that fails or is canceled it sits in a black screen for eternity...

I have a question regarding backwards compatibility, I recently replaced the hdd on my glitches console with a 500gb one.

I followed this tutorial because I wanted to enable xbox1 compatibility: tutorial

So the drive is formatted correctly i think. Now the only problem I have is installing the backwards compatibility update. Tried the default.xex thats in the tutorial (doesn't work) and also another update, a folder $SystemUpdate containing just this file "su20076000_00000000" and i don't know hot to install that one, tried from usb, burning to cd... It just says mixed media disc. Anyway xbox1 games don't work. If i plug in my old 20gb drive xbox1 games work fine (the backwards compatibility update was installed on that one via live a few years ago).

I have the 13604 dash and I'm using dash launch 2.26. I know dash launch is blocking updates, also tried renaming the update folder to $$ystemUpdate. Also not working.

The error when trying to play an xbox1 game si: X: 5014.0 B: 1884.0

Any advice how to install this update, or at least point me in the right direction...

^the default .xex has to go in the folder where the compatibility files are, at least that's how i remember it.
