Hey all

you may have seen my other post but here is the tutorial:)

IPB Image

Items required:
 soldering iron
 solder
Parts on list (im a link)
ATX psu or ATX extention cable
 cutters
 ATX and XBOX psu outputs

method:
cut the cables on you ATX psu 4 inches from the plug or cut the extention in half
 tin all the wires
connect each wire from ATX psu to its corresponding spot on XBOX mobo except ones needed in the circuit
ignor the wires you dont need(eg. -12v, -5v)
 assemble ciruit depending on version
use heat shrink tube or electrical tape to prevent shorts
 assemble xbox
turn on and enjoy the ATXness dry.gif

any questions or kit(pcb and parts) requests(im in australia) PM me or email me at mark.isda.king(at)gmail.com

good luck

It's a simple cuircuit it looks like r3 should actually be 2 diodes? Isn't if dropping 5v to 3.3v?

there are 2 diodes(zener diodes) dry.gif

http://forums.xbox-s...howtopic=468564
there are some pics in that link. they are temporary though and when i get my order of pcb's i will take construction pics of the final version.

thanks for the feedback

just an electronics question:(or two)

What do transistors do
wats a zener diode
and wat are the little things that are like a circle/cylinder and have wire wrapped around them? i saw them on my xbox psu and mb...

nice tut  wink.gif

hey, i have a v1.6 xbox i am about to do this too. Basically, i have a few questions though. 1. Did you mean 4.7k ohm resistor? because i could not find any 4k7 resistors, do you have a link to any? 2. not sure what power rating of the NPN transistor that i was sapposed to get, so i got the highest, mine says: Power Dissipation: 75w. is this to high? not high enough? could you tell me exactly which transistor i would need? thats about all my questions for now, and thank you for making a usable diagram, most are wayyy to hard to read.

google the parts as i cant explain them properly and i would want you thinking the wrong thing

4k7 is another way of writing 4.7k

the one i am using is less then half a watt(either 100mW or 200mW)

keep me informed on your progress

Most hacks use 2 diodes in series to drop 5v to 3.3v.

yes this is not your ordinary hack. it drops the 5v to 3.3v a different way and it also inverts the pwnon signal. these are both needed to get it working correctly

ok that clears up the 4k7 resistor, now i'm still not sure what power rating i need on the transistor. All you've listed on your parts chart is NPN, and there are many different NPN transistors. Also, this is for the 1.6 version, so your sure things should be allright?
Also for the "start" wire, i assume you mean the 3.3v standby on the xbox? In other words, the blue wire according to this diagram? http://pablot.com/in...box&submenu=psu

Also in your link above, you list a F2N 5770 transistor, will this work for my 1.6?

Sorry for the shit load of questions, however i don't wanna F things up. Heres my progress:
I built my circuit, just haven't soldered in a trandsistor yet, waiting on which one i need.
I am about to start wiring it in to my power supply and all that. If you all want i can take a few pics, i got my project board pretty smally so it shouldn't take much room.

one more question, on the atx power supplys there is a wire that is pwr-ok and pwr-on, which one do is wire in as the start wire in the diagram?

ok well looks like i'm the only one posting or something. But this is where i am, i've got everything hooked up and wired, however when i turn on my power supply (i'm using an m1-atx) it will turn on the xbox automatically, its not atcullay not turing on, just the fan will power up, and it just sits there, ii'm thinking this could be the standby mode? When i jit the power button on the xbox, it will do nothing. it should only turn on automatically when i have the j6 wire connected to the mono on switch. I currently have this setup with my computer, so i am just power the m1-atx from the computer.  Remember i have a v1.6 xbox, i may try it with my v1.5 just for the hell of it. All i have is the hard drive in there, and the fan running of 12v. i think the m1-atx can handle that.

Someone told me to use a 1k resistor in place of the 4.7k, not sure why, but i may try that too, i think cause i have such a high wattage transistor.

Hope someone posts and can help me out. Thx a lot guys.

Q1. any npn with a rating of 200mW or higher is fine.

Q2. START = PWRON

make sure they are all connected up properly. also try just connecting the PWRON or start signal directly instead of going throught the circuit. wish i could help more dry.gif

Q3. this is because v1.6 uses 5v on standby therefore no need to reduce the voltage on the power ok signal and the 5v standby is powering the transistor and the START or PWRON is being inverted.

I just reformatted my computer so i have been away all day:|

Same result, just the fan turns on and the power and eject buttons do nothing. I think it has to do with the power not being all the way on, don't know how to explain that, but seems like the xbox is just booting in standby and can't fully power on. Like the pwrok signal is not getting enough power or something.

well that sucks

wish i had a 1.6 here to test it with. just double check everything is solder correctly. i really cant think of anything else other then the circuit dry.gif

what it seems like to me is, the pwrok line is not sending a strong enough signal for it to turn on, it just sits in standby mode maybe waiting for a pwrok signal. Thats my guess at least, didn't someone say something about shorting out pwrok or pwron? it was in another thread of urs i think.

ok looks like i was wiring something wrong, i had the orange wires coming from the xbox as 3.3v when they should have been wired as 5v. This fixed the problem and i would like to thank you for helping me make this circuit. I have been running the xbox for about 1 hour and its perfectly stable. I am actually using a 1k resistor instead of the 4.7, will this do any harm or should i just leave it as it is?

the resistors you need are the ones you would use for leds(just higher values) and you should be able to get the npn from radioshack or equivelant.

sorry bout not responding earlier but im stilll having comp troubles

i wasnt sure which way to face them though so im hoping i got it right

resistors have no polarity (either way)

cheep resistors are fine (carbon film)
just make sure the 22 ohm is 1 watt or higher

check over your circuit diagram, the xbox side orange 5VSB should got to the power supply 5VSB (purple ?)

Ya, i told him something like this, but thats not what i meant, i was trying to say that make sure on the xbox side, the orange wire goes to the red wires on the atx side, seeing as there 5v and not 3.3v on the v1.6 xbox. Anyway, hows it comin blueinfinity?

Hi all,
new guy here trying to contribute, hope this isn't a dead forgotten thread rolleyes.gif . I just wanted to post after building the circuit for the V1.6 and let all know that it will NOT work. The 5VSB on the ATX PS will not take the full 5V load of the xbox. So, I tried to put a blocking diode on it and connect it to the other ATX 5V wires(red), but no go. The diode and load of the xbox drags it down to <4V, and this is not enough to get it to fire up (no 3.3v on start pin with power button). I did get it to work...sort of by jamming on the ATX all the time. Turn on the ATX all the time (ATX pin 14 to ground). Connect all 5v outputs on ATX to 5v on Xbox. Connect all grounds on ATX to grounds on xbox. Connect ATX 12V to Xbox 12V. Connect ATX PwrOk to Xbox PwrOk. Leave xbox start unconnected. Leave ATX 5VSB disconnected. Leave ATX -5v, -12v & 3.3v disconnected. Thats it..No circuit. Bad part is ATX runs all the time, but the xbox acts normally, power button powers it on and off .. eject power up etc.
**Warning - Do not plug in the Power Supply while it is on...Use swith on ATX or unplug from 120v to turn off **
**Warning - Do not use the power switch on the ATX to turn Xbox off it could damage a transistor on the xbox always, power the xbox up and down normally with its power button. Once Xbox if powered down you can turn off ATX**
No flames please, I know this is a rather crude mod. I will be working out the circuit to get the ATX to power on and off correctly. The circuit in this post for the V1.6 only provides a momentary grounding of the ATX Pwron pin when the power button on the xbox is pressed, so it turns right back off when you let go of the button. It will need a latch.
Dang that was long winded..Hope it helps someone.

Sorry for the delay in response...I got that box working as I described above .. Then promptly fragged it with a softmod error sad.gif. I did want to post another warning if you do use the wiring method I described.

***WARNING YOU MUST ALWAYS TURN OFF THE ATX AFTER YOU POWER OFF YOUR BOX OR IT WILL DIE***

No, I didn't kill mine as I was only using this setup for bench work, but did notice as I was working that when you power off the xbox since there is no signal to turn off ATX the processor seems to still run, but the fan and everything else turns off. I have no doubt if one was left in this state it would soon badly over heat. Mine started heating up pretty quickly on the bench ..In a box it could get ugly.

Now that I finally got the HD rebuilt and the system working again I will look into the ATX PS a little farther.

Hi to all!
My XBOX's went dead when I replaced a bad HDD.
It seems there was no workable solution so I've made up my mind to do it myself.
I've made my mind to find a solution.

PART 1
I have  XBOX Ver. 1.6 with TUSCANY PS.
The PS turned out working, but a kind of wierd.
The 5VSB was floating when there was no load, but under load it was +5VDC as expected.
Further, I found that 5VSB and 5V ouputs are separated with a FET.
The FET was OK. I tested all component on the TS's board except the main PWM
IC. Seemingly it was bad.
===
But, what was good that ALL PS's voltages as well as the connector (Molex 20pin) were easily available from
ATX power supplies! I have quite a few of them.
I removed the original PS and connected 2 ATX power supplies to my XBOX
to simulate 5VSB and the rest of the voltages and controls independently and separatly.
My XBOX was working except that I have to make a lot of consecutive connections to follow the
original PS' logic, made a new wiring harness and other modifications to meet the load max.
The box was up and running except for a hardly visible color distortions on TV, low level sound and rotating fan when power on button was depressed to power off the unit. I will resolve these issues in the folloing parts if anyone has interest.
Please post your comments.
