BBC Micro emulator would be a valuable addition! Maybe adapting the Linux version of BeebEm?
Title: Requests For New Projects
Post by: XPort on August 29, 2004, 10:37:00 AM
In the past, I have stated that I did not want to be bombarded with requests for new projects.  There isn't much left out there that would be interesting to port (in my opinion) to the XBox, however, so I'll now entertain requests.

Rule #1 - If you make a request, you must include a link to the source code.  If no source code exists for the project, then it cannot be ported.

Rule #2 - Do not request a project that has already been rejected.  The list of rejections is in this post.  Read them carefully.

Rule #3 - Do not request feature enhancements of existing emulators here.  This is for new projects only.

Rule #4 - Do not spam this thread.

Violating any of these rules will first result in a warning.  Subsequent violations will result in a ban.

List of Rejections

SNES - I'm not doing it. Get over it.

Visual Pinball/Visual PinMAME - There is no source to Visual Pinball. Therefore, there can be no port of this project. Pinmame is just one part that would need to be ported. It emulates the machine logic. Visual Pinball is the part that actually has the pinball table graphics/sounds/gameplay. If the source for Visual Pinball becomes available in the future, you may post about it in this thread. You should be absolutely sure the source is available, however, or else you risk getting a warning/ban. Do not post a link to the PinMAME site. As already stated, that is not the piece that is needed.

N64 - I'm not going to do a separate port when Surreal already does a great job.

Cassini/Saturn - While technically the source is available for this Saturn emulator, it is primarily one (very) large assembly file which looks like it was created by simply running the GiriGiri EXE file through a disassembler. Porting x86 assembly to the XBox is not generally a problem, but in this case the code makes all sorts of calls to Windows GDI routines that are not implemented in the XBox SDK. This means that in order to port it, I'd have to implement those API calls myself or try to hand-edit the assembly file. Both of those tasks would be extremely tedious and therefore this project is not something that particularly interests me.

Jaguar - There is no open-source emulator that runs fast enough on the XBox to be playable. Do not post links to Project Tempest or Virtual Jaguar because both of those require something along the lines of a 2Ghz CPU. If a new open-source Jaguar emulator emerges in the future that does not require such a fast CPU, then please post about it here.

Gamecube - There is currently no open-source emulator that would run fast enough on the XBox to be playable. I would be extremely surprised if a Gamecube emulator ever ran fast enough to be playable in the XBox. If you post a request for a Gamecube emulator, it will almost certainly result in a warning or a ban. You had better know exactly what you're doing when making such a request.

Playstation 2 - There is currently no open-source emulator that would run fast enough on the XBox to be playable. I would be extremely surprised if a PS2 emulator ever ran fast enough to be playable in the XBox. If you post a request for a PS2 emulator, it will almost certainly result in a warning or a ban. You had better know exactly what you're doing when making such a request.

Dreamcast - There is no open-source emulator that is worth porting at the moment. Chankast is not open-source, so do not request it.

Web Browsers, JAVA, Flash, anything related to HTML - I have absolutely no interest in porting a web browser or anything like that.

FPS Games - This includes things like Doom, Quake, Half Life, etc, etc. I can't stand FPS games, so I'm certainly not going to waste my time porting any of them.

MUGEN - At the time of this writing, the source code does not exist for this project. I've seen the OpenMugen website, but it does not look like it is anywhere near a playable state. If the MUGEN source becomes available in the future or if OpenMugen ever becomes playable, then you may post about it here. Do not make the request without really making sure first, however.

GLTron - I played it. It did not rock my world. No interest.

RAINE - No. Don't ask.

Descent 1,2,3 - No.

Enemy Engaged : Comanche Hokum - Not interested.

KOF91 - Not interested.

OpenMortal - Not interested.

FreeDOS - I looked at it a long time ago. It is not an MSDOS emulator or simulator. It is a free DOS (disk operating system) alternative that is somewhat compatible with MSDOS. If you're looking to play MSDOS games on it, you're mostly out of luck. It does not play much at all. DOSBox does a far better job in that department.

EMU7800 - This is written in C# which is not compatible with the XDK. I have no desire to completely rewrite it.

Open Transport Tycoon - no interest

DVDx / DVD Ripper - no interest

Super Mario Clone - no interest

Macintosh 68k - no interest

PC2E - This project has ceased development and MednafenX-PCE is leaps&bounds ahead of it anyway.

VirtualBoy - alg5 is currently porting one

Homeworld/Civilization or games of that ilk - no interest

Frozen Bubble - I actually do have a fair amount of interest in porting this, but unfortunately it's written in Perl which would mean I'd have to also port a Perl interpreter - which is a rather daunting task.  I can't say there will never be a time where I will have the proper motivation/time/energy to do this, but it is very, very unlikely.

Dink Smallwood - This was actually one that I had put on an internal "potential" list a long time ago.  Unfortunately, the code is heavily littered with Windows GDI/MFC calls.  It would be very painful to try and port this.

Mini-Racer - not interested

Star Control 2 - not interested

SIMH - not interested

Freecraft - not interested

Zinc - not interested

Fenix - not interested

xPDF - not interested

Gens Plus - absolutely no point

FreeSCI - use DOSXBox

FooBillian - not interested

FreeCNC - not interested

FreeSpace - not interested

FreeCiv - not interested

Racer - not interested

OpenOffice - not interested

QEmu - not interested

Allegiance - not interested

EMU486 - not interested

DCMOTO/Thompson 8bit - not interested

Nestopia/Nintendulator - no

AdriPSX - I see no compelling evidence that it is more compatible than PCSX

Desmume(NDS emulator) - There is no open source NDS emulator that has decent compatibility and that would be fast enough to run on the XBox.

pSX - Author has stated he will not release source.  Period.

Paintball - no - this is a FPS

Ultrastar - Intersting, but programmed in Delphi.

SDLMAME - no point

Privateer/Wing Commander - not interested

Flightgear - not interested

UFO Alien Invasion = not interested

The Genius - not interested

Danger from the Deep - not interested

Troll Bridge - the author himself states that it's "not really playable" so I don't see the point

Scorched Earth 3D - not interested

Army/Military/War games in general do not appeal to me at all

List of Potentials

This is a list of new projects that I may do in the future:

Atari 7800 - See MESS

Commodore 16/+4 - maybe, but not likely.

BBC emu - maybe.

Caprice - Maybe.

PC-98 - maybe.

NeoCD/SDL - maybe

Original Final Burn (not Alpha) - within realm of possibility, but rather low in probability.

MESS - not likely. I may get around to ripping out certain sections e.g. A7800, Coco

Coco - see MESS

Vecrex - see MESS

SimCoupe - maybe

Neverball - maybe

Tux Racer - maybe

Spectrum/FUSE - maybe

Enigma - maybe

TI-99 - maybe

Wargus - maybe

Zelda Classic - I spoke to the people involved - they don't want to give out the source.  Period.

Troubles of Middle Earth - maybe

Falcon's Eye - maybe

Daphne - maybe

Directmvs/Softmvs - maybe

Exult - maybe

XRoar(Dragon32/64) - maybe

Planeshift - interesting - not sure about how usable it is in its current state and having all the controls work from an XBox controller seems clumsy - but maybe

I have no idea how you are at porting more advanced games, but I came across these:

Homeworld - http://www.thereisnospork.com/projects/homeworld/ is the Linux port source. The regular game source is here http://www.relic.com/rdn/

Alien Vs. Predator - http://www.3dgamers.com/games/alienspredator/
Edti: I guess this is a FPS, never played, my mistake.

Civilization: Call To Power II - http://ctp2files.apolyton.net/source/

I liked playing the Homeworld Demo back in the day

Since it would be silly to give a definite 'yes' to any potential project. I presume 'maybe' is the highest accolade one can achieve here. Makes the future look quite rosey when you think of it that way. ^_^  <

Have you ever considered porting an emulator for gamecube development? There are many promising projects currently out form the homebrew community. Including a WIP doom, GC linux with audio nic and video support, and a wip snes emulator from lantus. If you are bored with the xbox you could dabble in gc dev. Just a thought.  <

Certainly more hopeful than "not interested"

It is kinda interesting to see what projects are open source though.  Some stuff I never even knew about.

I can't imagine that a Dreamcast emulator will ever run at a decent speed on the Xbox, and I don't care who writes or ports it.

I consider it fairly impressive that a homebrew scene is able to get N64 emulation at decent speeds.  The Dreamcast is considerably more powerful than the N64, and Dreamcast emulation is light years behind N64 emulation.

An actual Dreamcast is cheap to find, and you don't even need a modchip for them.

Exactly - it seems to be the exact same game as the Amiga version - so I don't see there being any point in porting this.

Are you sure you have your facts straight?  AFAIK, the people who actually worked on Chankast did port it to the XBox, and it ran at a decent speed, but they did not release it for the same reason they did not continue development of Chankast in general - they did not like the responses they were getting from the people using it.

I'll wait for xport's answer, but this seems interesting and a likely candidate for port, since it's nothing more than a set of patches for Bochs, wich xport already ported.

Yes, and it's done.  I had actually already ported this (and a few others) that I've been sitting on while trying to sort out some skinning since I cannot get a hold of JRed anymore.

Actually to the contrary - if it is basically a wrapper around Bochs, I'm going to stay as far away from it as possible.  That port gave me the most trouble that I can remember out of everything that I've done.  And it didn't even work very well.  (Well, that's unfair to Bochs.  I should say that it was very accurate (probably moreso than DOSXBox), but horribly slow on the XBox.)

I seriously doubt that would run any way near a playable speed.
To even get it to play at a decent speed a dual core system is needed.
Wouldn't it be nice if you could mod the xbox with an Intel Conroe CPU.  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/jester.gif)

Can't thank you enough for all your your effort spent porting these great emulators.A BBC emulator would be nice and so too would an Archimedes running on Xbox but perhaps that is more demanding an emulator?.

Off topic sorry , is it ever likely to happen that the Simple 2x filter will be included into Winuaex just to tidy up the slight blur.Truely wonderfull port and i would be lost without it but Simple 2x would be a nice addition to help clear the pixels up.You have already worked miracles getting Winuae running so well and i guess there is very little memory left but perhaps just enough for one filter.

many thanks

BBC is already in the list of potentials.  Archimedes....mmm probably not so much.

Simple2x (or any filter for that matter) on WinUAEX would eat up too much extra memory that could be put to better use for the various game-configuration-settings.  On top of that, WinUAEX is just about at the threshold of what the XBox can handle (and in fact many games already do not run at 50/60 fps).  Adding any kind of filter would lower the performance even more.  Have you tried fiddling with all of the hardware filtering options (like flicker filter, soften, point filtering, etc, etc)?

BBC is already in the list of potentials.  Archimedes....mmm probably not so much.

Simple2x (or any filter for that matter) on WinUAEX would eat up too much extra memory that could be put to better use for the various game-configuration-settings.  On top of that, WinUAEX is just about at the threshold of what the XBox can handle (and in fact many games already do not run at 50/60 fps).  Adding any kind of filter would lower the performance even more.  Have you tried fiddling with all of the hardware filtering options (like flicker filter, soften, point filtering, etc, etc)?

Thanks for your response.I do use Winuae with flickering set to zero and at times i select point filtering too. Point is very clear of course but at the expense of pixel accuracy. In any case it is such a minor quibble i am making here frankly and i feel just very lucky to be able to play Amiga so well on my Xbox.

Nice to know a BBC emulator is a potential , it was not the most important of 8bits here in the uk but still a very important machine as far as it's use in schools. Similar with Archi i think but a little less so - PC soon took over shortly after. Both had quite a good following actually though not as great as the more popular machines.

Thanks again

Sorry for filling this thread with unrelated but i wanted to point out to you how FLAVOR has discovered how to achieve just about perfect results regarding pixel accuracy while having point filtering selected.

.....................................................................
  For purists only...

If you set your resolution to 720x480 or 720x576 and use a custom screen size of 907x622 you're pretty close to the real thing. No scaling will occur and no need to use billinear filtering.

I found this screen setup with the help of Dpaint. Filled the screen with a dot pattern and looked for scaling artfefacts or moirés.

907x622 sounds a bit odd...but it seems to work just perfectly.
......................................................................

Bit obvious i guess but my method would have been less technical and rather more like looking for needle in a haystack so iv'e always been slighly put off by it.See what you think too.

Noticed today that you have already have a very well working method for correct stretching of screen that comes up when you attempt to position screen as an option. If i had bothered to work out what the black and white lines of fuzz were each time i chose this option , my ever so slight problem would have been answered already by you - sorry for being a donut. The most perfect screen it seems then for point  is 908 , 624.

I'll be quiet now.

Thanks for the clarification

Seeing the authors of Steem are dragging their heels over making their emulator open source, can I suggest a port of the Atari ST emulator Hatari? It's source is here. It is SDL mind.

However, unlike WinSTon it is able to emulate the STE architecture and run certain games that WinSTon doesnt like such as R-Type for example.

Just to also say thank you for the recent releases of emulators for what are more obscure platforms. I can also say that ports of FUSE and a BBC emulator would also be very much appreciated by British XBox owners.

Maybe ootake?

http://www.ouma.jp/ootake/

It´s based on pc2e but it seems to be more advanced. I dont think it´s better than mednafen but it is updated very often and it may worth a try someday.

Hazemd32plus seems to be another interesting project. Based on mame/mess it only emulates megadrive/genesis master system and game gear, but it emulates some genesis games that any other emulators like kega/gens are able to play.

Here is what i read in the documentation:

Reasons you might want to use this:

1. It runs Sun Mixing’s Super Bubble Bobble (actually maybe this should be in the
other list..)
2. It runs Dino Dini’s Soccer Properly
3. It runs the Realtec titles
4. The Star Wars scroller text is present in Monster World 4 (but backup ram
isn’t, yet)
5. You can probably use MAME’s INP recording to record some cool replays
6. You can use MAME’s cheat engine

I know the list is very short but maybe there are more. Haze released a lot of wips while he was updating the driver. You can read all the information here:

And those titles do not work in Gens?

He may have improved upon the MAME/MESS core, but that doesn't necessarily mean that the things he got working didn't already work in Gens because they're two completely different projects.

Neogenesis already has a sophisticated cheat engine and it can also record/playback.

I know that is a banned emulator but it would be amazing ( and a little freack)

According to haze no, but even if the emulator is not ported it would worth to having a look at the source code. i think the emu uses some specific hack to make the games playable, so they could be also be used in other emulators smile.gif

I have a request - can you release sourcecode to your newer projects?  I know the GP2x could use some of your work as a basis to start their own projects.  Also, if you ever did disappear from here (please don't!) then someone else could update your emulators/games if needed

thanks for considering smile.gif

I don't think they're hacks at all, the MAME team doesn't like hacks, they try to go for the most accurate emulation possible.  It also runs Time Killers and Gargoyles that other Genesis emulators don't like to run.

I think it's a great idea, but maybe a little immature still at this point to deserve a port.

Having successfully ripped the 7800 emulator out of MESS, how about a stab at the bally astrocade, or the vectrex?  I like ALG5's vectrex emulator, but having support for sound and overlays (along with all the other xport goodness) would put it over the top.

Someday I personally would also like to see the RCA studio II and Fairchild Channel F ported too.  It's not so much that these are great machines with tons of games that deserve to be resurrected and played for hours, it's a matter of completeness (like rom collecting!).

I am just in love with the fact that the xbox can do SO MANY machines all under 1 console.  Minus just a few of these obscure machines, our single console can walk through nearly 4 decades of video gaming.  It's mindblowing.

I have a proposal for a simple upgrade / feature addition to the universal GUI.  Those who install varied artworks to correspond to their ROMs are married to whatever type of artwork happens to be lowest-numbered in the screenshots directory...say one's box fronts are all 0001.png...cart scans named 0003.png must be viewed manually as it is now, or one must select a rom and wait for the image to cycle to additional images.

How about an option to select which number is displayed first?  Setting "3" in the above example would cause all box fronts in the user's ROM directory to be instantly replaced with cart scans.  If this feature has already been implemented then I'm some sort of fool...but if not, people will get some good use out of it.

Hello Xport,

Fishy is one of the most addicting flash games I have ever played but yet so simple.  The controls are only the directional pad on the computer.  Basically you eat other fish in a big ocean environment and avoid being eaten yourself by larger fish.  There is basically no hud and no levels, you simply get larger and larger until you destroy the ecosystem.

I don't know how hard this would be to port (flash) but please atleast take a look, I have the decompiled source in fla format here:

http://files.filefro...;/fileinfo.html

Basically a PSP emu. I don't mean its directly from psp to xbox...just an emu that can play UMD type files without lag of any kind. this would be greatly appreciated. Or a converter...that extracts the (pbp?) files from the UMD disc and converts them to iso form. I'm sure this is possible because well....heres the specs http://emulator-zone.com/doc.php/psp/ Now that should say a lot. So if somebody could get crackin' on this that would be awesome! of course i would do all this myself if i had the proper tools(hint hint) and some know-how to do it.

Not meaning to bump the above post par se, but for the same reasons about WinSTon I can suggest another alternative: when Chui wrote DCaSTaway for the Dreamcast he combined the sources of CaSTaway & Hatari and it has also been ported to Windows. The source is available here. SDL again, I do not know if that represents a problem.

I've only seen a 3D0 once, but didn't it have like 15 buttons?

And given that the project status page says the optimization is only 50% complete, I'm guessing you need a beefy processor to run it.  Anyone know how well it runs on a 733 mhz Celeron?

I'm not sure an XBox port is even feasible because of hardware reasons, and you still have to convince the guy to give up the source code.

If you look at the bottom it says that info was last updated Feb 6th, 2004 so I believe the 55% optimization figure comes from version 1.6b.  In the 2+ years since that time 1.7 has come out and the recent 1.8 about a month ago.   I dont have any 3DO games to test the emulator I just thought that might be a good console to emulate on the XBox if it were possible.

The reason FreeDO is closed source is not because they dont want to share info.

QUOTE
Q. What happened to the Open-Source FreeDO Project, located at http://freedo.sourceforge.net?

A. While I (awright69) would have liked to have kept the project open, I was shown by felixl that we couldn't legally do this. The 3DO architecture is very well isolated by cryptographic protections in hardware and software, and also by patents and IP laws which prevent the public disclose of much of its inner workings, and revealing those would have left the project far too open to legal action. While it can be argued that the 3DO or its technologies are outdated, patent and IP law simply does not allow for that.  (Thanks to ewhac for pointing that out. You’re right, I was naïve.) If someone wants to find a way to do this without stepping on anyone's legal toes, please go ahead. The FreeDO open-source page will remain only as a marker for historical purposes, with a link to the closed source page, and no code or methods from the 3DO or this project was ever, or will ever be, hosted there.

That being said if you cant emulate the the 3DO system on the xbox right now then it wouldnt make any sense to port it until they better optimize their code.

Do you port only games? I think a port of a ROM manager (not knowledgable enough about them to say which is best or opensource) for the roms that your ports deal with would be smashing. It'd be really great to have a copy of GoodXXX or RomCentre on my Xbox that I could just upload ROMS into a dropbox and have the program catalogue, name and archive my roms for me. A DS emulator will never happen for a variety of reasons.  Doing a quick Forum Search will reveal:

There is no DS emulator out there that can run commercial roms.  Even if it existed, it wouldn't run at a decent speed on XBox hardware, there would be no good way to handle the touch-screen controls on the XBox, and no good way to do the two screens.

That being said, if all you want to do is play FFIII on your TV, that is easy.

Play the original FFIII NES game with a translation patch, or just find the already patched translated ROM.  It is against forum rules to tell you where to find ROMs exactly, but it really isn't hard to find.

For more old school Final Fantasy games, with improved graphics even, look for Final Fantasy Origins, Dawn of Sorrow, Chronicles, Collection, Anthology, etc.

Slight problem with this plan.  Freetar Hero is written in Java, and as far as I know, a Java compiler that works with the XDK to produce .xbe's doesn't exist.  But, hey, if I'm wrong, and I hope I am?

Also, there's Frets on Fire, which is similarly awesome, but written in Python.  Another problem.

Way around these issues: run Linux on your Xbox.  I've never ran either program like this, but, hey, if Firefox works.. :p

XBMC runs python scripts, so it isn't completely unfeasible.

Granted, yes.  However, one would rip the Python interpreter out of XBMC, implement it as its own piece of software, and.. well.

If, theoretically, one could implement the OpenGL and other calls as necessary to run Frets on Fire on top of XBMC?  Well.  You would need an Xbox modded up to more than 128MB, 'cause damn the memory needs.  Granted, one could rip out the VMM code from MAMEoX or the like, but.. now we're just insane.

So, as you said.  Not completely unfeasible, but.

I don't know if this is the kind of request you're looking for, but has there ever been consideration put into a consolidated emulation engine? Something along the lines of Morphgear which is available for several platforms, including PC. The idea is that you have one emulator, with engines for all popular systems, all accessible through one GUI. I'm not a coder, so I don't know what happens behind the scenes, but basically in operation, you load one program, pick a rom, and it will dynamically load the emulator engine from there. I think this would be awesome if implemented on Xbox, as it would save going back and forth from the dashboard to change systems.

Speaking of MAME...
Individual game config settings would be nice (e.g. screen calibration per game).

It seems that there is a version of ultrastar called Ultrastar Next Generation ported to c++ and ready to be compiled under linux

http://sourceforge.n...s/ultrastar-ng/

it seems that the source can only be obtained using cvs

cvs -d:pserver:[email protected]:/cvsroot/ultrastar-ng login

cvs -z3 -d:pserver:[email protected]:/cvsroot/ultrastar-ng co -P UltraStar-ng

It´s not as complete as the windows version, but at least this could make the program more portable smile.gif

http://clonekeen.sou....net/#platforms

CloneKeep is an SDL remake of Commander Keen.  It is complete, and already ported to several platforms like the PSP and GP2X.

It appears to only run the first title, the Shareware one.  However the engine for chapters 1-3 is the same, so I wonder if this remake can read and run the levels from chapters 2 and 3?

First I just want to thank X-Port for all the hard work put into the projects and for keeping Xbox emulation alive, I still check all the time for new releases and I thought it was time I said thank you!

Back on topic, have you seen the Sega Saturn emulator Yabause?

It's over 3 years old, very capable and open source. Hell, there's even a Dreamcast port!!

It'd be awsome to play classic Saturn games on the 'box!

(Just adding an Arcadia 2001 emulator here as an alternative to the MESS version)

http://members.optusnet.com.au/jrjacobs76/#amiarcadia

WinArcadia comes with full source code...it uses PC-speaker sound though, so I'm not sure how much of a chore that would be to convert to actual sound hardware. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Keypad/control mapping seems like it'd be an Intellivision-like nightmare :/

Hiya folks,

About a week ago I sent Xport a email with regarding porting the C16/Plus 4 from vice over to the XBOX.  Wasnt sure if that was the correct way of requesting a port, till I read the rules.

Just a bit of background, I run Commodore16.com and over the last month I've recieved quite a few requests/interest in a C16/Plus 4 emulator the the XBOX.  So I thought I'd run a poll within the site to see what interest there was in a project like this, which really suprised me.  Check out the results at C16/Plus 4 thread.  I wish I had the coding tallents to do this, but unfortunetly I havent.

There are quite a few source codes available:

Vice source code

Yape source code

What do you think the chances would be to port one of these over to the XBOX?  The C16/Plus 4 has some great games, and a interesting system to use.

Thanks for listening,

Regards,

Chris

Please please A SAM Coupe Emulator would be fab. THe authors of SIMCOUPE (www.simcoupe.org) have said their not likely to convert it, but the source is there for all to have a play with.

SimCoupe runs on the following systems:

    * Windows 95/98/Me/NT/2000/XP/2003
    * Mac OS X (10.3 or later)
    * GNU/Linux
    * Pocket PC (ARM/MIPS/SH3)
    * BeOS R5 / Zeta
    * QNX 6.3.x
    * DOS (or compatible)
    * Sun Solaris
    * Amiga OS 4
    * PlayStation Portable

Wouldn't it be nice to add XBOX to the bottom of that list? Coupled with the fact that the SIM Coupe emulator is probably the most faithful, fully featured emulator out there - it's nigh on identical to the original machine.

Any chance?

</sarcasm>

But seriously, that guy that was requesting an Xbox emulator for an Xbox ... surely you weren't being serious? If so, please go back and read what you typed.

Emulators are for making software run on a system it wasn't programmed/compiled for by using another piece of software to interpret what the original software would be making the original hardware do and replicate it on said system. (Hm, that sentence is hard for me to follow, and I just typed it. Oh well, sleep deprivation is fun.)
Basically, what you're proposing is just plain outlandishly foolish- like asking someone to make an MS-DOS version of Dosbox. Why make another piece of software to run Xbox games on Xbox when the Xbox already runs Xbox games?

Oh well, done ranting, now. Sorry if I've gone off on a tangent, but it's not like this thread is used for it's original purpose much anyway >.>

I only hope the ridiculous and uninformed requests don't turn XPort away from the reasonable requests.

I never owned or played a SamCoupe.  I knew nothing about the SamCoupe.  For the purposes of software preservation, I think porting the SamCoupe emulator is a great idea.

The code is very portable.  The hardware requirements are reasonable.  Arguably it is the last system that should be emulated on the XBox that isn't already.

Of all the requests I've seen made of Xport, including the ones I've made in the past, this is the one I'd endorse the most.

I hope Xport works his magic on the SamCoupe emulator.

It was absolutely perfect and it ran great.  A few of us playtested it, and as a secret hidden bonus, it even ran Saturn games.

But we decided not to release it.  In fact, after playing it a few hours we deleted it from our boxes and we've vowed to never speak of it again.

But it was really great.  Shoulda been there.

Spextrum is good and everything, but Characius grew bored of the project before polishing it up and adding save states, ironing out bugs etc. With XPorts incredible UI, a spectrum emulator on the Xbox would be the greatest Spectrum emulator ever made. Mate, the GBA emu don't even run full speed on the Xbox, so it's not going to handle the DS is it. Besides there arn't even any decent working DS PC emulators out. So best to just forget it. Just buy a DS if you want to play DS games, and if you really wish to pirate them, then get yourself one of them new fancy R4 adapters, it's all fairly affordable too.

X,

Have you heard of a game called "Cave Story?"  If you still have a passing interest in porting games to the Xbox, I thought you'd might find this interesting.

Cave Story is arguably the best Metroid-Castlevania-Commander Keen style game for the PC, and it's free.  The game was created entirely by a single Japanese guy over a span of 5 years.  It was created for the PC, but it's pixel art is better suited for a TV.

The source code isn't readily available, but the author has granted permission to use his sources in the past (for ports).

Any chance you might pick up the scummVM port?  It seems to have been dead for a long time.  The last version on Xbins was in December 2005.

I've had better luck playing scumm games with dosbox than with scumm, sometimes.  Seems to me you could get more speed out of the scumm program than by doing it this way.  It just needs to be updated to the newest version, which supports many more games!

Thanks for everything.

I second that request, ScummVM has made alot of progress since 2005,
it even supports the old Sierra AGI games now like King's Quest 1 & 2.

I would love to see an updated port but with the Xport GUI, because on my old non HD crt TV its hard to read

However, ScummVM is something the rest of the community might be able to do fairly easily if the original port's code is released.  Just do a diff file of the port from the source of the version it was made from, and apply that diff to the new version as a starting point, clean up, and you should be reasonably good to go.

And when XPort releases his sources, again, we might be able to just take his stock features and apply them to the source code for SimCoupe.

Hello, first of all I'd like to thank Xport for all his work and effort. To speak the truth the only games I've really played on that machine are ScummVM games and old DOS games, all thanks to Xport. After that I figure it's not impossible to guess what I'm going to ask for.. Updates for the Dosxbox and ScummVM. There are several new updates to the PC versions that would probably finalize the Xbox emulators. Right now there are some games that doesn't work for the Dosxbox but do work for the updated Dosbox. I got the the speech version of Leisure Suit Larry 6 to work but only in Lo-Res, on the PC both Hi- and Lo-Res works. The reason I'm asking here is because last time Xport posted in the Dosxbox thread was 11/2004. There are also a few games for the ScummVM that could make use of an update. But most of all I'd like to see an update for the Dosxbox, love to play the good old classics on the Xbox.
Keep up the good work and would love to hear something about this, whatever it may be positive or negative news!

NeoCD/SDL - maybe

The current emulator NeoCDSDLx does a good job, but your GUI's are where it's at XPort, and NeoCDSDLx is sorely lacking (Or rather completely lacking) in that department. It'd be nice to have all the features your other emulators support across the board, in a Neo Geo CD emulator.

How about the Fujitsu FM Towns Marty? Sorry I can't link to a decent emulator or source because I've only just started investigating this one myself, but I believe it was quite a classy console with some really good software. Would make a good partner to the awesome X68000 emu.

Military free is fine be me. What's with all this association between military and video games in all the video game documentaires that have been popping up lately? You'd think they are trying to market mass murder before they have to draft, anyhow, all games listed have source on there page:

Exult:

Adventure port.

Before you dismiss this as something that can be played on z26x, look closer.

Yes, it's an updated version with more difficulty settings, more items, and more map to cover, making the somewhat difficult classic even harder.

Personally, I would have liked to see a map editor go along with this, but I know we can't have everything. But, still: it'd be nice to see this port stabilized and ported to the Xbox.

Thoughts?

laugh.gif If only it was as simple as that.
You need to compile some code. To do that, you need to have a source code for the suitable IDE. Therefore, to compile a XBox program, you need a C source.
If a disassembler could just open a raw compiled executable and "save as" a C source file, the world would be different altogether!

Im sure xport said he hates fps games...

I'm going to make the suggestion of The Spring Project: http://spring.clan-sy.com/

IPB Image

The FAQ page states that a 1ghz CPU would allow for 500 units on screen at once, possibly more if some of the graphical features were toned down or removed. I know this one isn't greatly likely, but I thought i'd throw it into the suggestion pot anyway.

Thanks for your reply Retroplay ,Pcsx is somehow tricky to conf. slow most of time and has a very limited list of compatibility compared to epsxe ,also it didn't use the full power of the xbox (i used to have a 700mhz
p3 with 64mb of ram and gf2 mx200 under win2k and all psx emulators runs flawlessly ),what i want to say is that a console able to run smoothly doom3 can emulate easily psx with great graphics and sound .however the tasks accomplished by xport are huge and admirable ,never a game console reached such a level of homebrews and emulators support thanks to xport .i cant ask more than a good psx emu thanks xport billion times and good luck.

Hey There! How about an LUA Player!

Reason : I Think this should be ported so that people can also make games for the XBOX in a more simplified language. Also, with being less complicated having to compile lots of diffrent files together. This has been a great success with the Playstation Portable. I hope it would do the same for XBOX.

Sorry I am late in making requests, but... I only got my xbox softmodded a few weeks ago (IMG:style_emoticons/default/ph34r.gif)

Yeah, err.. The source code can be found : http://www.lua.org/ftp/

I posted a thread about PCSXBOX iso/mp3 compatibility.  It doesn't work, but I think it should be worked on.  I know that the emulator is no longer in development, but like someone added support for ROMs over 4 mb in neogenesis recently and it was such a hit (with UMKT), someone should definitely add this function.

Why?

Because I noticed that games without CDDA audio play nearly flawlessly without any sound skips.  From what I can see it's the uncompressed CDDA audio that really messes with the processor.  MP3 should be much easier on the system.  I don't even care if CUE sheet support is added.  I just love the way Sega CD games play in ISO/MP3 format and I think it's time to try it with PCSXbox.

Anyone agree?

I would like the 2 best things that ever happened to the xbox and what makes it stand out from all the other gaming systems intergrated into one program xport emulators and xbmc.
An easy way to keep people interested in xboxes is make it easier and easier to use. With more and more options that are either available on the newer gaming consoles that were not on the last or providing better features more ready and easy to use features that the newer consoles dont provide.
You can take all the emulators at there most current build have them built in right there and just like anything else just add your roms and go. Launch them with the same look and feel you get with xbox games with menu intergrated in and everything. No need for the ini it be intergrated in as well as the networking everything be intergrated
Also it could be updated as well for new features tech3 gets tweaked every two weeks or so.
Alot of developers who do the tech3 build are also members here. They listen to peoples request to add features and Im sure they would like some feature like that as well.
You said you would consider anything so I figured I'd give you something else to consider.
You once said in a post that it was not possible to merge all your emulators into one emulator but if xbmc was set up this way it could do it.

The only feasible way for this to happen is if xbmc loads the emu with a game from the command line, then when you exit the game, it will return to xbmc at which point you can load another emu, etc.  This capability already exists in all my projects and has for quite some time.  I've included custom_launch_params files in each release so that developers of dashboards/etc could integrate the emulators such that the user could load games directly from the dashboard/etc.  It's in their hands now.

Hey xport, been trying like crazy to get something going for the vdp fix for neogenesis, i found the gens plus source page but it's hard to tell what is what. If you ever feel the need to make a small update to neogenesis this vdp write latency will fix some games namely games like soldiers of fortune, chaos engine, etc. If you ever play soldiers of fortune you will see what i am talking about, it's a graphics glitch in the middle of the screen that looks like the screen is ripping and jumping. (not screen tearing)

I have been at it for 3 straight days trying to figure this out, and not it's not making any sense. (crosses fingers) if you ever feel like taking a look at it, please let me know. and if you ever feel in a generous mood  cool.gif   smile.gif   This would fix all the games that use this fetaure in a real genesis.

I know you will only do and look at it what you want, and that's perfectly cool, you've done ALOT for everyone and im sure i can speak for all of us that we have and always will appreciate you. You've even taken your time to answer all my mindless pms about this and that.  laugh.gif

SO whadda say mr xport???  laugh.gif

Sorry - the only way I could really assist here is to sift through the code myself - which is pretty much all that needs to be done.  Unfortunately I just don't have time to do so.  I doubt it's going to be anything that just leaps out and says "hey - I'm the missing piece" so I imagine it would be time consuming.  I'm sure anyone with enough diligence and aptitude will be able to handle it, though.

It's written in python and has about 8 other packages that would need to be ported for it to happen.  That's a monumental amount of work and I suspect it would actually be faster/easier to just write one from scratch (but don't look at me.)

mameox0843b or mameox 128 plus is your best bet for those games.maybe your roms arent compatible with the mame you are using.i will have a look later and try some out.

i tried out 3 megaplay roms sonic1,2 and golden axe2 and they played just fine.you should try looking at mameox128 as that has a lot of megatech/play games in the supportedgames.txt.

Hi,

I already read that you would not port Quake to xbox because it is an fps game and but it was already ported I have the source I can send it through an email or you can download it through ftp (get mirc go to EFnet then on to channel #xbins an type !list then ftp your name that you used and the password emulation) I don't think you will do this one but I wanted to ask if you could turn it into quakeworld or use the ezquake source found here: http://ezquake.sourc...et/development/ click on source code to be redirected to the download site. You can reply or email me at [email protected] when you read this.

Well if your not gonna reply to this fine but would consider telling me how to put windows on my xbox?

Not to be sarcastic, but that's my nature..... I think the only way you can put Windows on your XBox is if you put the CD on top of the Green XBox Jewel and watch it collect dust.

I will love you forever if you make a Xport version of ePSXe, i know there is no source code but if may be able to ask them for it!

also surreal 64 sucks, it doesn't play games like it should, you should make a new P64 that has more plugins, more compatibliity

Hey XPort!

Alan Greenspan's Federal Reserve model sucks, it doesn't make everyone rich forever like it should, you should make a new economy that has more money, more people who can buy mansions that work at Wal-Mart.

Can you make my XBox bring world peace and fix the world economy?  My IRA that's down 60% would love you forever!

Funny thing is... in his rude way Reiwilder does have a few points that I've thought over the years, but I'm dumb at coding and just happy for what I have now.  I'm hoping the Xtras and Dynamic Skins and the Madmab Edition updates to the XPORT emus bring some hard-core coders back who can update this stuff and get us some better capability.

I figure giving my 4,000 hours of XBox work away to everybody for free is probably just a better way to go about making that dream happen than to slam somebody's work.

Hi XPort,

I would love to see a BBC Micro emulator as it's such a shame that one doesn't exist for the Xbox. I've tried all sorts of things to try to get the DOS versions of BeebEM to work under DosXBox but to no avail.

Many thanks!

Somebody mentioned that BBC can be emulated in Amiga, and there is a great thing called Amigasys that can emulate within the emulator and could probably do that.

Check out THIS LINK.  Maybe you could help getting games set up for it to work right with those guys.

Was just coming here to re-suggest a BBC / Electron emulator. And what do you know ! Electrem would be easy for someone of xport's calibre. Looked at the sources myself a few months back, too difficult for me as im a newbie.

I second that it would be a great choice to port hopefully it might happen someday, heres a link to the sourcecode xport if you wish to have a look at it thanks.

if someone finds any better links for sourcecode please post but im sure this is the newest source available.

I've never seen the BBC before.  I have a full romset here waiting for it though since some guy was working on it back in the day and never finished it.

Did anyone look into getting it working on the Amiga yet?

Hello Xport

I've been a big fan of your emulators since you came onto the scene. I would like to request a Dragon/Tandy Color Computer *coco* emulator for the xbox. The coco was a pc made by Radio Shack back in the very early 80's. You were able to write programs *BASIC* and on the CoCo's you were able to insert PAK's where you can play various games.

There's a decent emu of this for the PSP, which is the Dragon emulator. I've came here throught the years asking here and there, to see if this dream could become reality.

I hope you take this into consideration. Thank you. smile.gif

Hello??? No answer??? Hello???

Sorry ,forget it all.
I don´t read that you doesn´t port Mario Clones to Xbox.
Thats my fault.

But why this threat???

What game have been ported to the Xbox last years??? I know Alien ..Gold Edition. But not more
I think this can be closed.
Here is no one that can port games to xbox.
WHY are you asking?
Its because there is for years no new homebrew for Xbox expect Aliens...   gold Edition.
I know much people that says . Give me the sourcecode and I port it to the Xbox. But where are the games???
They can just talking about themself, because they are the big coders.
But remember what is new homebrew??? Nothing !!!

Where are the game they would port it to xbox???

Some threads are just for generating traffic, which in turn generates revenue.
For whom, well i will let you decide.
Now some emulator authors may check this thread out now and then ( i doubt it ).
Those that may read this thread probably have no interest in your requests.
Aggressive taunting rarely works.
Title: Requests For New Projects
Post by: pimmelpeter on July 19, 2009, 11:41:00 PM
I wont be aggressive.
But fact is read the threat and see how much interest there is.
The people are talking about much nice games that can be ported to the xbox.
But how much from this games has been ported ???
What is the last homebrew game you know??? Alien VS Predator (Gold Edition)
And where are the next games???
And before Alien VS Predator (Gold Edition) ???
When was the last homebrew before that??? 2-3 Years ago???

And emulators????
Where are the new emulators???
I mean emulators that some people talking about???
I don´t mean new version of emulators where you can make a shortcut for games, or new GUI......
I mean now emulated systems that weren´t before on Xbox.

Think about that.

I'm not oldskool enough to have ever talked to him.  As much as I've done around here I was never here back when I could have been buds with guys like him.

Hope he comes back around.

At least, I hope he's been in the shadows and he's witnessed what we've done with his stuff and how far we're stretching the limits of his emus and the Box itself.

And I hope he's proud.  cool.gif

yeah. I wish he would come back and have a passion for the Xbox again... there are still so many things that could be ported but he and a few others were the only programmers willing to do the work.... I'm note sure if they have all stopped caring, or if they just moved on to new systems like the Wii, 360, exc.

Visual Pinball is now open source.
