Nintendo confirms US and Japanese Wii launch detailsPosted by XanTium | September 14 11:34 EST |
|
From gamesindustry.biz:
The Nintendo Wii will launch in the US November 19th, priced just under US$ 250 (197 euros / GBP 133) and will come bundled with a copy of the game Wii Sports. Japanese consumers will have to wait an extra two weeks for the launch on December 2nd, but the console will retail slightly cheaper, at 25,000 Yen (167 euros / GBP 113), without a copy of Wii Sports.
Japan will see 16 titles at launch and will range in price from 4800 Yen (32 euro / GBP 22) to 6800 Yen (46 euro / GBP 31). 25 titles are purported to be available at launch in the US, priced around US$ 50 (39 euro / GBP 27)
At a press event, Nintendo of Japan president Satoru Iwata also revealed the pricing structure for downloadable games via the WiiConnect24 service. NES games will sell for 500 Yen (3 euro / GBP 2), SNES titles will cost 800 Yen (5 euro / GBP 4) and N64 games will retail for 1000 Yen (7 euro / GBP 5).
Nintendo is due to host a press event tomorrow in the UK, releasing full details of the Wii launch, including games available from day one and new titles for the European region.

So in other words.
NES = $4.25
SNES = $6.80
N64 = $8.50
Seems good since most XBL arcade games are around $5 (400 points) or $10 (800 points)
-
Just hope they don't leave us European gamers in the dark like Sony has
-
good prices for these old games...looking forward to get a wii and a ps3
-
I still can't really explain why I am so attracted to this machine (and even the name Wii has grown on me)...and I will probably buy one of these, especially at that price point...looks like fun
Here is some decent info on the Wii...

Nintendo will do just fine with this generation. Wii as a concept (controllers, online gaming) is much more exciting than Gamecube ever was.
Still, they've done some pretty incredible design mistakes with this one. 480p will look very crappy on current LCD TV's, especially when seen next to x360 and PS3. The machine isn't that fast, but it should be easily fast enough to push out 720p, when even the original Xbox could do it.
It's a fun machine, but the expected low-res jagfest will keep it off my shopping list for good.

Got to agree. With MS and Sony playing specification Top Trumps, there's something attractive about a console that proports to be primarily FUN rather than having kick-arse graphics or a HD-DVD-BluRay-VHS drive.
Of every console I've owned, the Nintendos and their games (especially the classic Rare and Mario titles) have lived the longest in my memory.
Now let's hope for a pre-Christmas UK launch ...
I know what you mean. I was played Mario Bros 3 this pass weekend with my gf and my friends. Man that was still fun
-
Bye bye XBL arcade, hello wii
So affordable also, i didnt realize
-
I really want one!. So cheap and looks like tons of fun. I'll probably end up just playing Golden Eye!. Maybe the best death match game ever created!. I dont care about HD output since I dont own a HD tv and don't intend to any time soon.

But that's the cool thing, they will have a lower price point, aiming at the 90% of people with standard def TV's so that's the market there aiming at. Hell I might get one at Christmas, the Wii just looks so fun and my parents will be able to get it for me and not gasp at the price! Hell my parents would prob end up playing it because it looks so fun!

I was on the fence about getting a Wii before but if I can go and get my favorite old games for so cheap, then I will definately get one. Even if I think the controller is kinda funky. The low price tag doesn't hurt either.

Have you played Gamecube? Heck have you even played N64?
Nintendo has ALWAYS required that games for their console include whatever the latest and greatest form of FSAA is to pass certification. The Gamecube is virtually Jaggie free even on my HD projector. I would suspect the Wii would be as good if not better in this department.
Despite the GC's lack of horsepower many of the cross-platform games looked better on the GC then it did on the Xbox despite the worse textures and lower poly counts simply because they implemented FSAA well and it gave the graphics a smooth and crisp look.
-
That's obviously a very early build of the game... not just by how basic it looks compaired to more recent screenshots but because it's running at a non-standard resolution (or at least one not supported by the Wii) which leads one to believe that it was created on a development PC.
-
my niece will get a wii for christmas... and i will buy twilight princess.. enough said.. this system will kick ass.
-
wow...i always get excited when there is wii news.
i am really looking foreward to it coming out.
i'll admit that i am a nintendo fan.
not a fanboy or anything.
cant wait to buy one though.

I'm just wondering since when did Xbox-Scene start posting news/updates for other consoles....then why call it Xbox-Scene...why not change the name to Console-Scene?

That's a good one.....The wii doesn't look attractive and that price is not good. It's like a 5 year old console revamped with a new controller scheme. After the novelty wears off it will be boring. If games allows you to play with either the controller or the wiimote then it would be better. I can't see myself using that remote to play games at all......
WHo really cares about playing NES games? They all look like crap and I doubt any of us could play them for long. My xbxo has all of them but I never played any.
For $50.00 more poeple can get a much more powerful system that includes HD and DVD playback.
-
At this price point I can see many parents going with the Wii for the present of choice for the holidays. This will pretty much insure Nintendo grabbing the younger video game demographic, as well as, people looking for a second system.

Id rather use emulation on xbox than buy over games that I already own. Ill get it if a have some change left over cause I always buy all the systems anyway.
They better be able to play online!

and about the wiimote to play games, i'm pretty sure you can use gamecube controllers on the wii, and you can't go wrong with the wavebird. there are also virtual console controllers that look a lot like super nintendo controllers.

Wii will do very well. Everything about this product is very appealing to the masses, from the price to the games that appeal to large audiences. It's concept proven with DS and taken further in every way with Wii.

480p on any HDTV set will look misty when placed next to x360 or PS3 on crisp LCD sets, there's just no going around it. Your average Joe Consumer won't be put off by it, but for technology whores like me there's just no going back to SDTV.
But as I said, Wii will do good. I was confident that technically much superior PSP would wipe the floor with clumsy low-res DS, but you know what the story turned out to be there.

-
If I remember correctly, the old-school wii controller is corded, but it plugs into the wireless standard wireless wii-mote at the bottom where you would normally plug in the joystick.
Also, this virtual console is cool, but any word yet on whether it will support enhancements to the games like backwards compatibility of the Xbox on the 360? I'm talking Anti-aliasing, and maybe upconverting the signals to EDTV from SDTV?
Any info on the DVD player for the wii? I heard it was not built in, which is kinda odd. Also, will it support EDTV?
Finally, I am curious too about the lack of at least some HDTV support. Like it was stated before, the original Xbox could display 720p just fine for some games, why can't a similarly equipped wii do the same? Oh well.
-
I wonder if you can use the DS as a controller for the Virtual Console games?
Also remember that the Wii has 512mb built in memory so no need for a memory card!

The luxury of a wireless controller for 360 is 50, the wired version which is enough to get by any game is only 40. That's the same price of the wiimote, except the wiimote alone isn't enough to get by a lot if not most games.

This is the only thing that worries me about the Wii. That won't last long if you're going to be downloading lots of games + saving your progress etc. Can you add to this with the SD card slot or is that just for game saves and photos?. Either way I still really want one of these things!.
I hope they get released over in Europe for Xmas!. I wonder how much they'll be over here in the UK?. I'm guessing Nintendo do a bundle for £149.99. Suppose we find out tomorrow at the press event.

$250 for the console, $60 for the nun-chuck controller, $40 for a memory card, and $40 for component cable is a WII FREAKING WAY TO MUCH FOR ME!
Especially when the 360 core system will cost the same with 10x the power and 10x the game selection. Has Nintendo lost it?
-
One idiotic thing on behalf of Nintendo...
No freaking DVD playback....freaking AGAIN....
This is REALLY retarded...

The New Nintendo Sounds Cool, But the only Problem I have with it , is if you need Broadband to d/l the games im shit outa luck , where i moved to i cant get shit but dial-up ( sure im not the only one ) , and to think i still have a xbox live account i cant even use.
Peace!

Damn, you people bitch alot!
Look everyone already has a DVD player, and even if they did make it play DVD movies, it would no doubt be inferior to most stand-alone players. Plus half of you would bitch about the fact they even included it since it is so crappy.
I comes with 512mb of internal memory. Sure that isnt much but this is included in the price, besides the old games arent that big and you can use your gamecube memory cards for gamecube saves and possibly even for Wii saves. Plus, they are using standard SD cards for extra storage (possibly even usb drives) instead of making you buy proprietary memory cards, that is unheard of.
I think $40 for the remote is perfectly reasonable. It has motion sensors, rumble, a speaker, some onboard storage, connects to all other controllers making them wireless, can be used as a NES controller if held sideway, the pointer feature. All this an it is only $10 more than the 360 controller. Not to mention the fact that it is backwards compatible with gamecube controllers, and the addons are only $20.
It also has built in wifi, a browser, photo viewer, free online play, DS connectivity, instant messages, gamecube backwards compatability, a freaking weather channel, and more to come (notice the blank spots on the main menu) And dont forget it actually comes with a game!
I dont know what you all were expecting but I think this is a pretty good deal.
-
well one things for sure...
if you wait out for after launch, you know nintendo will bump out some pimp ass bundles...
i got gamecube, $20 of coupon for a game (Resident evil 4) and mario kart for about 60 bucks, after selling mario kart for 40 on ebay...
i wont get one at launch, but i will get one.

Well I just read that the Wii is going to cost £179.99 over here in the UK and its being released on Dec 8th. £179.99!!!!! ($339.93 USD)wtf!!!. Suddenly the Wii has become a lot less appealing to me!. Thats the same price I can pick up a 360 core pack for over here!. Waaaaay over priced if you ask me. Heck yeah! Now I better be able to pre-order this baby. I'm a definite Nintendo fan, heck I still have 2 SNES consoles at home just so we can play some sweet, sweet, sweet 5 player Bomberman action! I pray that they release that for download, that and Goldeneye and I'll be able to retire my SNES' and my N64.
It would be nice if they had some system where you could prove you had the original cart of a game and they would give you the download for free. I must own between SNES and N64 over 200 carts
But regardless of what anyone says, the Wii is going to be awesome, Nintendo are back in full effect!
Wow, I sound like a huge fanboy don't I? Oh well, I guess it's somewhat true. The only other thing I'm waiting for is Gears Of War
Anyone know of somewhere reputable for pre-orders?
Amazon has them http://www.amazon.co.../dp/B0009VXBAQ/

It would be nice, for those without broadband, if you could use dialup to download some of the older games, especially since most of the NES and SNES games are less than 1MB (most NES less than 300KB for that matter).

I think it makes sense to have them separate.
Many games will use just the Wii-mote... saying you'll need the nunchuck attachment is just pure speculation. Heck viewing all of the Wii-Sports footage I would say that the pack-in game doesn't even need it.
Also ALL of the wii attachments are $20 that includes the retro controller and the zapper in addition to the nunchuck.
Sure the controllers are expensive but lets put this in perspective.
The Xbox 360 controllers are $50... a wii-mote + nunchuck is $60 and that includes a speaker, built in memory, 2 6-axis motion sensors and an IR positional sensor on top of the standard controller functions.
Are you suggesting the new advanced Nintendo controller isn't worth $10 more then the standard controllers that the other companies are offering?

QUOTE(vengeancegoon @ Sep 15 2006, 06:44 PM)

Seriously you people.
Why would I bitch about something I was expecting and had no reason to expect otherwise?
I've never had a Nintendo controller break on me, not even the N64 analog stick and it's not like Nintendo couldn't offer it as a replacement part if it did. So no, that never went through my head and no I wouldn't bitch about it, don't generalize me as someone who's trying to bring this thing down. I'm pissed because this is something I want and I don't want to to take it up the ass in the wallet.

I already knew Wiisports wouldn't need it but I'm hardly speculating how needed this is:
Madden 07
Marvel Alliance
Red Steel
Trauma Center: Second Opinion
Super Mario Galaxy
Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, The
Metroid Prime 3: Corruption
Rayman Raving Rabbids
Elebits
Battalion Wars 2
Mario Strikers Charged
Call of Duty 3
Project H.A.M.M.E.R
Are all games that I just did a quick scan of that I was able to find that need the Nunchuck. Granted not all of these are multiplayer but Madden, Marvel Alliance and Mario Strikers are for sure and three games I was considering. This is just in the first wave of games, I'm positive I'm going to need that nunchuck.

The zapper wouldn't have an accelerometer so I'm wondering why that attachment is so expensive now.

Well, since you brought it up, 50 dollars for a wireless Xbox 360 controller is too much and 40 for a wired is too much but I wasn't registered here when I was venting about that.

i dont think wii are, wii always knew it was gonna be around £150.
so for £180 your getting the console, the remote, the nunchuck and a copy of wii sports. Bargain if you ask mii. thats £100 less than a 360 and it coes with a free game.
ive had mine preordered from play.com since the second i got my email about it.
still at least buying both a 360 and a wii is cheaper than a ps3..now thats shocking.
-
Thats not so bad I suppose. Didnt know we got the nunchuck included. Still £180 is £30 more than what id expected and I think alot of ppl will just go for the core 360 instead. I'm still weighing up whether or not to reserve a couple at Game for selling on ebay for xmas. You think it'll sell out?.
-
i doubt it man, its not a worldwide release remember so id imagine there wont be any shortages, obviously ive got mine preordered incase. Id say out of the 3 nintendo is the company thats got their head together the most. this will be the smoothest launch out of the 3.
As for the extra 30 quid i dont mind because i wasnt expecting there to be a game and the nunchuck bundled in it. Id of happily payed 200. Well after zelda i will have
Plus i reckon alot of kids will have asked their parents for a wii instead of a 360 for the new controller..plus in realty who acctually wants a core?

Seriously, even if every game for the Wii sucks (which I don't think will actually happen) I would buy one JUST to get a chance to play some of my old favorite SNES or N64 titles. And it's so cheap!
