I would like to confirm just one more time that the Samsung drive does indeed rock.  I had a US X-Box that I blew up in Europe because my power converter was broken.  I ended up getting a pre-modded X-Box from somebody for a good price.  The problem with my modded X-Box was that it would not read ANY disk because music CD's, normal DVD's and games.  It wouldn't even read my import Region 0 Chinese flicks (and these things are even legit... as far as I know.)  Well I found out my 'cooked' X-Box had a Samsung drive in there (thanks to the picture above) so I popped it into my new X-box and that drive will read everything I put in there.  Region 0 DVD's, CD-R's, CD-RW's, DVD-R... everything I've tried so far.  Good stuff.  Go for Samsung if you can.  It rocks.

(The old one was a Thomson by the way... it was crap... it even struggled reading the things it was SUPPOSED to read.)

I've found that Samsungs cannot rip dvd movies to hd where as Phillips can. And thompsons totally suck. I know most people probably don't back up dvd movies on their xbox but just a point of interest incase someone else might like to know.

ive dealt with several samsungs, all rip dvd movies just fine

To Get an Samsung drive U must know a Xbox-guru tat works at a distributor or somewhere they sell xbox and have servicetechnicians. I got a guy at PS-Data in Norway to get me an replacement samsung for my Phillips. It is also possible to modify a Samsung PC drive for use internally in the xbox. You will have too look for this info. I don't got it anymore. Hope this helps.

any reason you decided to pull up a year old thread to make your first post in?

haha when i first bought an xbox i got a 1.6 which at the time had no modchips... so i returned the shitbox to bestbuy and searched around for older xbox boxes to ensure that i wouldnt get a 1.6 again anyways i found a store and got a new xbox and luckly it was a 1.3/1.4 (im still not sure but its got a perfect dash/kernel versions for modding) with a samsung drive! the store has about 40 boxes left which are mostlikly the same as my xbox.

if u life in canada in the west toronto area i'll be happy to let u know where to get a samsung xbox

my v1.6 box has a samsung. stock as of now

I insert different DVDR movies, it said that I need to hookup a dvd playback kit in.  Does it mean that it recognize my DVD-R (ritek and prodisc)???

I inserted my home audio CD-R and it COULN'T Recognize the disc at all by saying that Xbox canno't identify whatever, please make sure that you inserted a DVD movie, game, or an audio cd, etc.

I keep hearing that Samsungs read all media but not mine. It wont read any burned media, whether it be games, mp3s, movies ect ect.

the model number is SDG-605, knowing that it doesnt work makes me wonder if i should even attempt to replace it...

Samsung isn't necessarily the best.

Samsung SDG-605B (found in older Xboxes) is the best, but the SDG-605F (found in newer ones, including the crystal), has a lot to be desired in terms of media compatibility.

From what I've seen, I'd probably rank the drives as follows

Samsung SDG-605B = Phillips VAD6035/21 > Hitachi/LG GDR-8050L > Samsung SDG-605F = Phillips VAD6011/21 > any Thomson

Basically if you have to buy a new (v1.6) Xbox...you'd want to get the Phillips drive, otherwise the Samsung.

Well guys, i had an old 1.0 Xbox with a Philipps drive that read everything, even books...then the box died on me...  sad.gif  Now i bought a 1.6 crystal box on ebay with an 250GB HDD and a Samsung drive...well, it does NOT read ANY CD-R or CD-RW (which my old Philipps read with ease), sometime it stutters reading DVD+R and the only media it reads perfectly are DVD-R...so i'm not too impressed by this Samsung-is-the-best thing...

Don't resurrect a two year old topic to post your question in.

Samsung drives can read almost and type of CD-R/RW/DVD-R/RW you can throw at it. Phillips reads a little less than that and Tommys read jack squat. But if you do not have a modchip its not a big deal, as they all read retail Xbox games equally well.

Alright guys take it from a pro i have had three Xboxs, (first:Thomson,Second:Thomson,Third: after sending it in to custermer care they sent it bact with the phillips (1million times better than thomson) it reads cd-r 80min but not certain 74-min cheap ones.
Thomson: CD-RW
Phillips:CD-RW, CD-R 80min, some 74 min
Samsung:all

wink.gif.

Many DVD drives will work with Xbox, but not everyone. I advise LGx16 (or that 616Q wink.gif) drive if you don't wish to play originals, but you only need to run CD-Rs.

And... I've had Thomson, but i have replaced it with Samsung 616FEB  muhaha.gif . I got lucky I've bought one - hard to get them biggrin.gif.

Oh, I got something more to say:

As Samsung reads all CD-Rs, all CD-RWs, and DVD-Rs, AFAIR it does not read DVD+R media (but I might be wrong biggrin.gif).

Phillips is the funniest drive. I've seen about 7 of them, and only 2 were pretty good. Only two read about 5% CD-R media brands available - other part reads only few types of medias. Every of them read TDK D-View x24 CD-Rs, but none of them read Verbatim Pastel Discs. Also I've heard that some Philipses read all CD-Rs, but it's very rare :/. You got luck if you have Phillips reading all medias. That drive can also beep (reall 'beep' wink.gif) when turning on/off the console and it's really loud. I remember I was installing EvoX from a CD-RW. The console was open and I put Phillips on a hdd (just right after flashing TSOP). The drive was really moving (dancing? wink.gif) when reading the disc biggrin.gif.

Thomson... at least it isn't so noisy as Phillips biggrin.gif.

I know I'm not alone in this, but personally I think samsungs are overrated, who really needs to read a cdr. You can create multi boot dvd's to fit your smaller games on, and if it cant read a dvd+R I don't want the damn thing.   I just bought another box and it's got a sammy i wont read the same cdrw that I have been using with the bios update on it, seems to me like the damn thing is way overrated.

Just My Opinion though

I think it has to be mentioned something about replacing the drives.

None pc drive will read originals, unless it's a Samsung 616T, or 616F drive (FEBB, TEBB, FRPS will do). You also need to reflash that drive with SDG-605 firmware. No 616Qs will do, no 616QRPS will do.

If anyone in the UK is interested, PC World Business Direct do the Samsung SD-616BE-G (they also do the SD-616Q, so be careful).

I don't know if these can be modded in the same way as the T or F models, though.
Find them here.

I have a sammy. Couldn't get Memorex 4x nor Fujifilm DVD+R  nor verbatium nor TDK 4x to work these are all DVD+R. I even hacked my dvd burners bios to make it so you can change the bit so drives think its a dvd-rom(only checked this on fujifilm).  I burned all the discs with nero mostly movie discs if that makes a difference.

I just got myself a new Xbox Beast Pack and it had a Thomson DVD Drive in it.
Here's a list of the media I've tested in it so far:

BASF 74min CD-R --- FAILED
EMTEC 80min CD-R --- FAILED
GAT 80min CD-R --- FAILED
Verbatim 80min CD-R --- FAILED

Dataking Professional DVD-R --- WORKED!
Princo DVD-R --- WORKED!
Evolution Premium DVD-R --- WORKED!
That's Write! DVD-R --- WORKED!
Melody DVD-R --- WORKED!

I am yet to try DVD+R media and CD-RW media.  I will update this post as necessary.

If you're having problems burning media that should work, you should find out if new firmware has been released for your burner.  I have a Lite-On DVD+-r/rw drive and they recently released a new firmware that "Improves the readability of recorded discs when the intended use is for playback in a DVD player or a XBOX machine."   It's worth a shot.

You can get firmware for Lite-On drives at www.liteonit.com/ODD/english/english-load-firmware.htm

To whoever emailed me about getting them the illegal firmware:

No no and no

Please don't email me asking questions about me getting you something or asking xbox questions as I will just delete...the forums and IRC chan are there for a reason...

tongue.gif    Here is my question..... has anyone taken there Xbox back to best buy, and do they give you any shit over it or do they just exchange it on the spot no questions asked.   Also what do you think my chances are for returning it and getting a Samsung drive ?  I was told that all the holiday bundles with Tetris and Star wars came with samsung drive but I guess they were wrong.....  ohmy.gif

Also can anyone with a thompson and a Samsung, confirm this for me.  I have the movie True Lies and I can watch the moive all the way up to the point where Arnolds wife gets interigated by Arnold and his partner, and then the movie starts to freeze up and it won't play.  I also skipped ahead a few chapters and it will continue to play.   can anyone else with true lies try this and post what dvd drive you have as well.  I want to know if it is just somthing wrong with the thompson drive or my xbox.

Thx for any help  biggrin.gif

One Of Them is a Retired Design, and Requires a ATA100 Cable.. 616t I think.. and its really the same model but the 616t was built for the PC.  and the User Flashed the ROM with the XBOX Rom... To Make it Xbox Compatible... and It Requires a DC 5v HDD Power Splitter to split the power form the HDD Power Cable to Both the HDD and The DVDROM Cuz it uses the Standard PC Power Connections instead of the XBOX MultiCable Etc.

Im Gonna Wait Till my Warranty Expires then Switch the DVD Rom and Add Some Better Cooling Fans to the GPU/CPU and Re-DO the Top Casing to Allow More Efficient Cooling.

Funny Microsfot  Put a ATA100 Controller in the Box But only ATA66 CD/HDD

Well, I'm not sure why the Thompson drives get such a bad rap as mine has been great in media compatability.  It reads my DVD+Rs burned at 8x and CD-RW (non-virgin) but not cdr. The only thing that sucks is it's a first gen JP LE xbox so the damn drive leaves tiny circular scratches on the discs that don't affect gameplay but could annoy you if you play your originals (I use backups so doesn't matter)

Not all... but most of the new Xboxes have had Samsungs.  I actually have a client who wants a Thomson specifically and I'm having a hard time finding one.   tongue.gif

I've found that Samsungs cannot rip dvd movies to hd where as Phillips can. And thompsons totally suck. I know most people probably don't back up dvd movies on their xbox but just a point of interest incase someone else might like to know.
