2010 - Year of 360 Homebrew - SNES360 v0.21
Posted by XanTium | December 31 22:44 EST | News Category: Xbox360

What better way to start of this new year than with a real nice XeXDK Super Nintendo emulator for homebrew-enabled Xbox360 consoles:
Quote

Welcoming 2010: Year of 360 Homebrew with the first release of 2010 to start the year off with a BOOM!  We're releasing:

* Snes360 V 0.21 Beta
Super Nintendo for Xbox 360.

* Features
- Graphics/Sound
- Achievements (don't be a dumbass and use this on live, your console will be banned)

- Filters : Simple2x, Scanlines, TV Mode, Super Eagle, Super 2xSAI, HQ2x
- Turbo Mode (Right Trigger)
- Aspect Ratio/Stretch Mode support
- SaveStates (currently 1 per rom)
- Previews

* Usage
This is an Xbox 360 Game On Demand Package. Unrar it and place it in HDD:\Content\0000000000000000\

Roms should be placed in the following: (sorry if you dont like the locations but there a reason for their locations)
GAME:\roms\ (dont have to worry about this one since its in the package)
USB0:\_Emus\Snes360\Roms\
USB1:\_Emus\Snes360\Roms\
USB2:\_Emus\Snes360\Roms\
DVD:\Roms\
HDD:\Emus\Snes360\Roms\
MEMUNIT0:\Roms\
MEMUNIT1:\Roms\

The PreviewPath tag will specify where you want your Preview Images to be stored.

Some slowdown occurs - this will be resolved in future builds as more PPC code optimizations are implemented.
More of your favorite emulators/homebrew to come..no donations required...

2010 is going to be the year 2003-2004 for xbox 360 owners(for those that were around with xbox 1 homebrew in those days), this emulator just screams of beautiful memories.
Thanks and may the xbox 360 be the new king of homebrew

On a side note - the achievement thing is cool, but I can see problems for people who share a hdd between a live/stock console. I suppose if you make a second profile, it won't make anything bad for you, tho.

I too am surprised by achievement support but possibly it is disableable or will be in the future? At least it will show up under quick launch as it will be listed as a full game, which is part of the reason of why it has achievements.

This is awesome... I wished  my Xbrew360 didn't RRoD me... Now I have to wait until XeLL gets updated to support the new Bootloader introduced with the summer update 2009... I already cancelled my LIVE subscription because I'm buying a PS3 to play online while I play homebrews, emulators and watch HD movies in all sorts of format using XBMC360 on my Xbox!

It's really nice to see such a good release, now on with emulating those beefy consoles we had in the past few years!!!

I must say, this is awesome. The achievements are funny (click about LOL) menu is fairly clean and simple, no gaudy graphics clogging up everything, only one issue I have is a delay kind of in the controls, other than that it's pretty much flawless IMO.. Keep up the good work "Anonymous" I expect to be seeing more useful apps like this.

They can update from here until the cows come home, but the exploit that allows Xell to run has been blocked in the systems with the summer update.
What you need is a for a new exploit to be discovered.. However the Xell exploit is 3 years old and is as of posting the only one found to date.

I would look for a second console that has not been updated if I where you

If you plan on having roms on the xbox hdd, don't forget to run them through Pre XBox Copy Tool v0.3 Beta made by AceHack in 2003.

Shortens filenames and removes any odd chars.

so these actual achievements show up in your gaming profile and as achievements earned?  Or just pop up as pretend achievements stored only within the program?

If the former sounds bit over risky for those who like to take their profile to a non-banned console for occasional xbox live play

Yea thats what Im worried about, even if it didnt have acheivements wouldnt it still show up in your list of played games in your profile? Which I presume is stored on the mem unit aswell. Soon as you took that mem unit with your profile on Live surely thats a Gamertag Ban.
Using the same profile for backups is one thing, but I think ill be using a new profile for homebrew...

Hello anonymous coder of this emulator.

It does not work under freeBOOT. Please can you package it in a demo container or just release the xex and let us package it ourselves.

Thanks in advance smile.gif

Oh, also the rom list has a limited number of files it can display, please can you make it show all my roms.

Other than these things, it is great.

While I am thankful for this release at all, I have to say that TMBINC was right in his previous thoughts about the direction of development of the homebrew for 360. By using the XDK rather than open source, I hope this truly isn't the end all, nail in the coffin so to speak for his involvement in the scene.

Thank yooooou!

Just tried it again.

I get up to about b in my roms list and then it thinks that is the end.

I am loading my roms from the internal HD. Are you using USB?

Edit:

Just tried from USB and it sees them all. Very odd.

Yes, Microsoft will have to go and Instaban your account if you go on Live with these acheivements in your gamertag.

Not sure about banning an un-modded console but i would not try it just in case

I was here for the original xbox emulation explosion scene back in 03/04. This emu today has totaly brought me back to those very exciting times!

Aside from some noticeable pad delays when trying to execute anything during gameplay, this is simply amazing work!

I tried out a little bit of Super Metroid, Mario Kart, & Contra III, and I was very excited with what I saw!

Many Thank You's smile.gif I can't get over this emulator! smile.gif

While I am thankful for this release at all, I have to say that TMBINC was right in his previous thoughts about the direction of development of the homebrew for 360. By using the XDK rather than open source, I hope this truly isn't the end all, nail in the coffin so to speak for his involvement in the scene.

Yeah its a bit concerning. The guy is a prodigy at this, but given the course the xbox 1 took for homebrew this gets to be rather expected for people to use the XDK tools available to them

@above poster the emulator includes 3 homemade snes roms. It does not include commercial roms, and dont ask where to get roms here. you can get in trouble

No, everything relating to Snes360 (gamerscore, game icon, achievements etc) is all stored at your end on the hard drive or MU. That's why all you need to do to remove any trace of you playing Snes360 is to delete the account and recover it from live. I was surprised to see the achievements and Snes360 icon appear on my stock 360 though.

I used a freshly formatted Fat32 Flash drive and created a folder called _Emus then in that folder i created another folder called Snes360 then inside that i created another folder that called Roms

other options are
USB0:\_Emus\Snes360\Roms\

Thanks Alot!!

it works perfectly i look forward to seeing what else can be done with the 360.

And to people who see no roms read the readme

QUOTE
Roms should be placed in the following: (sorry if you dont like the locations but there
a reason for their locations)

GAME:\roms\ (dont have to worry about this one since its in the package)
USB0:\_Emus\Snes360\Roms\
USB1:\_Emus\Snes360\Roms\
USB2:\_Emus\Snes360\Roms\
DVD:\Roms\
HDD:\Emus\Snes360\Roms\
MEMUNIT0:\Roms\
MEMUNIT1:\Roms\

And you need to press the right shoulder button to select the device usb/hd/dvd whatever, the roms should be .smc files placed in the above folders, also they should be run through this program to ensure the filenames are correct http://dwl.xbox-scene.com/~xbox/xbox-scene/tools/utils/PreXBoxCopyTool0.3Beta.zip

this is how i got it to work on harddrive.
make a new folder on you desktop.
rename it    _emus
open emus then make new folder snes360
open snes360 then make folder roms
open roms and insert smc files and off you go.

Emus\Snes360\Roms\ smc files

transfer to root of partition 3.
it should work. if it does not delete preview folder in emus

Just curious...not bashing this project, but why is a project like this being done with the "illegal" xeXDK? Isn't libxenon robust enough (feel free to correct me if I'm wrong) to be used on a project like this? That way any coders wary of the proprietary xeXDK wouldn't be discouraged from contributing.

Still, props on a great release. pop.gif

Thing is, what about all the XDK-based releases on Xbox 1? Did anyone actually give a shit then? OpenXDK was never that popular (or indeed "robust" enough), which is a shame in many respects, but it's impossible to compete with the proper native SDK.

People are also keen to get a version of XBMC running on the 360, yet they seem to ignore the fact that the original XBMC is an XDK-based project.

Best of luck to the libxenon guys, of course. Let's hope they can achieve what OpenXDK did not.

that should clear up your disbelief and for the record it took me five seconds to search for that topic using the xbox-scene google index search engine.

Okay, maybe I should re-phrase that, I am aware of its exitence, but I've heard very little talk anywhere about that particular emulator. It's not a case of disbelief, I never stated I didn't believe it existed. I was merely stating that for some it would be quite easy to be blissfully ignorant of "SNES9x GX Xenon" or whatever it is called.

Not sure what you're getting at with the search engine jibe, but had I really not heard of the emulator previously, how would I even think about searching for it?

eh thats understandable but its just that that topic was really popular when it was first posted but has since been lost in the forums from the last banwave and now xbr and freeboot releases as well as the emulators for those dashboards.

when he said that it was released for libxenon so that way you could verify it was true.

heck I even got a link to the video by directly copying and pasting what Icekiller2k6 had said into the search engine, it was even the only link there

not really a big deal but sometimes instead of blindly saying something isn't real you should at least research your claim before making it.

Sorry if it seemed/seems like I'm trying to put you down I am just trying to recommend searching for the truth instead of guessing it. rolleyes.gif

Agreed 100%.

As a participant in the xbox1 homebrew scene, I was just hoping for an approach (with the homebrew movement in the 360) that would not drive away any potential coders. While it was awesome to see so many great releases (and the birth of XBMC) with the previous gen, for a long time I had hoped for a better openXDK. Unfortunately that never happened, while more enthusiasm was put into development of "retail XDK" apps.

In my opinion this caused the previous gen homebrew coders to become polarized; either the coders downloaded the XDK with no reservations, or they steered clear of it altogether. Admittedly I don't know that much about the PSP scene, but I know some excellent "legal SDKs" have been made available to the public, far beyond what openXDK accomplished...that's what I'm hoping for on the 360 this time around.

Obviously this sounds like the way to go on the legal front as it doesn't scare of would be coders havin a side project on their free time.  Although for everyone else this probably means more time and work

anyone else experiencing issues with the savestate feature, or just regular save features within a game?

i tried creating a savestate with Legend of Zelda, and when I went to go load it, it said it was successful, but it didn't take me to where I actualy created the save

and for Super Metroid, the very first save spot in Crateria, it says the save was complete, but when i goto replay the game at a later time, i'm back at my ship?

also, in order for me to actualy play Legend of Zelda, I had to unzip it.

could someone let me know something about these issues, and how they were able to save and load properly?

Thank You smile.gif

If your game saves are not working, make sure your ROM file name conforms to FATX
It has to be 42 characters or less (including files extension) and contain no illegal FATX characters

Lets say you have a ROM at USB0:\_Emus\Snes360\Roms\Legend of Zoldor, The - A Lump to the Pack (E) [!].smc

You will be able to run and play it, but when you try to make a save, it will not be able to save the srm file to

hdd1:\content\yourprofile\FFED0707\00000001

change your ROM file name to USB0:\_Emus\Snes360\roms\Legend of Zoldor A Lump to the Pack.smc
and it will be able to create a save file

I believe there are some FATX re-namers out there if you have multiple ROMs

If you are using a FAT or FAT32 USB drive and you want your ROM List to be alphabetical, you can use

FAT Sorter v1.0.4 on your USB0:\_Emus\Snes360\roms folder

it will rewrite the FAT table for that folder, you only need to run it on that folder

So, the question that comes to mind is: when/if XBMC360 (or something similar) is ready, will it be better to buy a 360 or a small HTPC? 360 prices will continue to drop... HTPC will continue to get more perf-per-dollar plus all the functional goodies. And there is still a significant amount of work to hack a new 360 (w.r.t xbox1). What do you think?

What the 360 has going for it is form factor, good bundled controllers, dual-usage, low cost and the 'cool' factor if you can get it all working.

Against it is aging and alien hardware, high noise / power draw for what we want it to do (depending on revision) and limited numbers that can be used this way.

(my conjecture from here on, this might be completely wrong)

I'm not a developer nor involved in anything related to XBMC or the scene, but heres what I understand of the XBMC situation at the moment.

There are 3 potential ways to get XBMC on the box:

*Through XeLL and running under linux
*Application running under a hacked dash
*Using Xbox emulator inside hacked XB360 dash

Issues with linux:

XBMC is currently compiled for PPC but that is under OSX. No idea how much work is involved to get this working in linux as some apple specific libraries surely must've been used and that functionality has to be translated to work with GNU equivalents. Another issue is that XBMC running under an OS that can't effectively make use of all 360 hardware functionality (yet) would be quite a bit hamstrung. Performance would also be limited by available RAM (512 mightn't be enough) and the usefulness of libxenon. Since the main function is to play back 1080p video or other things too tasking for xbox1 XBMC, performance would be a priority issue. No use doing it if the xbox 1 can do it better.

That said all the basics are implemented (sound, network, openGL?) so we might see this if driver support gets to a certain point...what point that is I have no idea. What is sorely lacking at the moment is resolution support outside of 640x480? (free60 down at time of post) and support for HDMI. There might be more issues I haven't addressed.

Issues with hacked dash:

XBMC needs to be ported across to the new XDK. Aside from the legal issues of obtaining it (team XBMC would be a pretty big target for MS if they officially release anything, source or otherwise) quite a few modules would need to be ported across or remade from scratch, I have no idea how difficult this may be but they've been reluctant to even try so far. Another massive barrier from what I gather is that network access is encrypted under the hacked dash, until thats broken theres no point in even trying. There might be more issues I haven't addressed.

Issues with emulator:

I'm pretty sure theres a few dozen good reasons why the emulator can't handle every single xbox game released, those reasons would probably translate to XBMC in one way or another.

tl;dr Small, powerful *and* affordable HTPC's would probably (or already are, depends on your budget) be out before XBMC360 sees the light of day, if ever. DFI released a P55 based motherboard in ITX form-factor with a PCI-E 16x slot back in November.

there is a kinda working XBMC for linux/PPC, it was even shown of on the cygnos page i think.
a bigger problem would be the linux base system tho, as it currently lacks all kind of drivers (Sound, GPU/OpenGL) to make really use of xbmc running on it.
i dont really care where xbmc will show up, linux or XDK... just hope it will come sooner or later.

Hi. I was playing with SNES360 today. You guys rock. Thank you so much.

Anyway, I was kinda annoyed at:
1) The GoD format (i use freestyle dash)
2) The background music
3) The many directories it looks in for roms.....

I'm sure that the SNES360 team is thinking about a freestyle dash friendly version. But I'm impatient and like a challenge.  In case it's instructive to anyone, here's what I did...

****To reveal the file .xex and make SNES360 appear in freestyle dash
1) Use god2iso on the GoD package to make an iso
2) use extractiso on the iso

This reveals the xex file and directory/file structure. Place the files in \Emulators\SNES (or wherever your freestyle dash config file is set to look for emulators). Alternatively, you COULD simply install this as a GoD file like the instructions want you to, and then find in the game section of freestyle dash, and then select the new option to force this item to appear under emulators, I believe. (Freestyle Dash Version 1.10)

****To change the music!
1)After revealing the folder structure, go to the media\sounds folder, delete or replace the background.mp3 with your own song. I chose "Panic Attack" by Finger Eleven :P

****Cleaner, simpler rom browsing/directory config thingie stuff
I keep all my roms in one place. No need for multiple directories or a Preview folder in some far off place. My settings.xml file for SNES360 looks like this:
CODE

    USB0:\Emulators\SNES\Preview\

Oddly enough, I put my Rom files in a directory outside SNES360's directory, but the Preview folder inside.

Anyone know if the source code was ever released for this or who wrote it so we could contact them and ask for the source? Its been over 6 months since it was released last. This emulator has a lot of potential but it definitely still needs some polishing, many games arnt playable for me or having studderying problems which makes the games unplayable. Homebrew is not dead. An new gameboy emulator just came out like 2 days ago and LoveMHZ working hard on a N64 emulator which looks very promising right now. And of course when the FSD 2.0 gets released we will have a sick dash for all our games and homebrew. Coding stuff takes time and it if they ever figure out a way to debug on Jtagged retail 360s then the coding progress will greatly be sped up. Just takes time, the scene will get there.

I want the input lag to be fixed more than anything. It's very annoying trying to do anything precise.

Yeah that drives me crazy too. I also hate how some game stutter.

v0.31 and 0.32 are out.

0.31 fixes Input Lag and 0.32 fixes some more stuff...

So I guess, with 0.32 we have a perfect SNES Emulator (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)
