MednafenX-NES - NES Emulator for XBox v12b (Public Beta)

http://mednafen.com/
http://xport.xbox-scene.com

Special thanks..

RessurectionX, and Gilles9999 for giving the project legs when it needed them.
Frank Morris for some suggestions.
Cospefogo.. For a spankin' new default keyboard look.
Mega_Man_(?) for being crazy enough too volunteer to enter tons of gamegenie codes.
Gilles for some rumble codes.
Nes6502 for the proposal on the Synopsis format
Thanks to all involved for doing the missing movie previews and filling out the Synopsis for the NES.  Rx, Gilles, Justgoonies, and Mega_Man_(?).
XTecuterX73... Where are you man?
Anybody else my brain dead self forgot.

What's New:

Dynamic Skin with Dual Screenshot Movie Previews
DYNAMIC MEDNAFENX PM3 skin by Gilou9999 (read the readme.txt in his skin folder).
There is an alternate synopsis background in the skin directory.  Feel free to try it (just rename it to "synopsis.jpg)

Lots of interface updates.

This is mostly an interface update with all the changes I've made over the past few months.  It's basically a public beta to (hopefully) drum up some interest and give everyone a taste of what's ahead.  If you feel like signing up head over to the RessurectionXtras thread at http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=660135 and volunteer.
If you have any questions head over to that thread, or the official release thread.  I have a few tips for working with the .dat files.

-----------------
Interface Changes
-----------------

The much talked about "Game Synopsis!".  See http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=663137

* Synopsis.  Press down on right stick to see a description, tips, hints, of the highlighted game.
* Synopsis background can be stored in the skins "backgrounds" directory or the emulators "background" directory.  Skin directory is searched first.

* Help screen support for game select screen and text browser (try pressing start).  (Graphics provided by Gilou9999)

* The two help menu's and synopsis background are now skin specific. So if the emulator finds the files in a directory called "backgrounds" in the skin directory it will use them. Otherwise it looks in the emulators directory for a "backgrounds" directory. If no synopsis background is discovered the emulator will use the default "other" panel.  The Synopsis background is named "synopsis.jpg".  The help files are named "Game Selection Menu.jpg" and "View Text File.jpg"

* Box/Cart art can be displayed in seperate window. Box/Cart art is autodetected based on size (only in "old screenshots" directory).
* Movies display over screenshots so if you want, you only see screenshots when no movie exists.
* Can now stream videos and screenshots from Samba or Relax.  It is recommended to do on or the other, but not both or you will get slowdown on the videos.
* Screenshots are now sorted and displayed in proper order.
* Screenshots/Box/Cart art in the "old screenshots" directory can be named anything (as long as it has a .png extension)
* The In Game Options Screen can be sized and positioned now.

* New option to "Force Game Screen Size/Position". There are two configurable screensizes. (To deal with multi-core systems like MekaX and XboyAdvance). This will be useful when switching from HDTV to SDTV or vice versa. It will save the user the trouble of resizing the screens for something that is likely temporary.

* Numerous changes to menu system see below (current menu configuration layout)

* Skin sprites can now be named for easier manipulation. Directory names must be of the format "0_spritename", "1_spritename", etc. Do not use underscores for the spritename. It is a delimiter.

* Added "Select Skin Configuration Used..." and "Save Skin Configuration as..." to the "Configure SKin" menu. This allows multiple skin configurations in one skin allowing the user more "pre-defined" options on how a skin looks. For example the placement of the games list and the preview screens. Gilou's Dynamic skins really take advantage of this, check 'em out!

* Skin previews when selecting a skin or a skin configuration. The files must be in the "preview" directory within the skin directory. "preview.jpg" for the 4-in-1 pic, and "configuration name.jpg" for the rest.

* Removed popup message from "Configure Skin/Select Skin" and replaced the top line with the text "Press Start To Select Directory". This displays on all "change directory" menu screens.

* Changed "Seconds before auto-advancing Screenshot" to "Seconds Before Auto-Advancing Artwork".
* Changed "offset X" and "offset Y" to "Offset X (left/right)" and "Offset Y (up/down)" in the Sprite Settings menu for those who are confused by cartesian coordinates.  wink.gif  tongue.gif

* Sprites now display when sizing the preview screens.
* Screenshot, movie, and gamebox preview transparency's now working properly.
* Removed "Sprite Settings" option from "Pop-up Configure Skin Menu"...  Fixed bug caused by doing this.  tongue.gif
* Changed directory browse code so it can be told to "ignore screenshots/streaming media"
* Changed volume increment/decrement on mp3 player and game sound.  Set to 10 for now.
* User can now change music volume in the game select/help/and synopsis screen.
* Zip selection screen now sorts the zip contents. Helpful in Computer emulators in which some zips may contain "multiple disks"!

* Unmapped all the default UI mappings except for "in game menu", "keyboard", and "fast forward".

* Modified the autolaunch (from dash) so that it jumps straight into the emulated game.  Be sure to set the option to "Exit the emulator on game exit after autostart".
* Fixed a bug where the gamescreen would get blurry after changing video options.
* Fixed a bug where the xbox would lock-up when setting 10x11 mode in non 480 modes.

* Improvements to the cheat database system.  Changed menu options to "Search Cheat Database for Codes" and "Save Cheat Codes To Custom DB".

* Search can handle multiple CRC's for games that use same cheat codes but have different CRC's.  (Be careful with this).
* Search and save database options modified to be able to handle GameGenie codes in addition to Gameshark codes.
* Fixed a bug that would cause "Add new code" to default to GameGenie when it should be Gameshark.  Use "Add New Game Genie Code" at the bottom for GameGenie codes.

* completely changed around the screenshot directory structure to accomodate the ability to display both screenshots and cart/box art at the same time.  (Don't worry the old screenshot directories will still work until you are ready to switch).

* Text file directory retired and renamed to "Media" directory.  Screenshots (in the menus) renamed to "old screenshots" to reduce confusion.

Note: Point the media directory to the directory that contains your "artwork" folder.

New format as follows

/usernamedfolder/NES/artwork/box front/
/usernamedfolder/NES/artwork/box back/
/usernamedfolder/NES/artwork/cart/
/usernamedfolder/NES/artwork/titles/
/usernamedfolder/NES/artwork/action/
/usernamedfolder/NES/artwork/misc01/
/usernamedfolder/NES/artwork/misc02/
/usernamedfolder/NES/artwork/misc03/
/usernamedfolder/NES/artwork/misc04/
.......
/usernamedfolder/NES/artwork/misc99/
and so on

Pictures are displayed in the following order. Title, Action, Misc01-Misc??, and then it switches to the old dated ( ) screenshot directory. Be sure to remove your old screenshots once you've switched over or just point the screenshot directory to somewhere else.

It alternates between Boxart and Cartart in the area specified for them.

left/right on left analog to change screenshots.

* Changed the way the movies directory is handled.  The emulator no longer adds the emu name to the path (ex: NES or "f:\movies\NES\").  So you'll either need to move your movies down a directory or just point the movies directory to where the movies are located.

* After changing the media directory the emu will ask the user if they want to point the movies directory to "media\movies".

* Tinkered around with volume control options for mp3 (music), in games sound, and CDDA.  0 (no volume) thru 100 (full volume). Although technically the volume is no longer audible well before it hits 0.

on normal game select menu...

Right analog stick left/right - music volume
Right analog stick up/down - movie volume
Left analog stick left/right - change pictures
Left analog stick up/down - nothing

On favorites menu...

Right analog stick left/right - music volume
Right analog stick up/down - movie volume
Left analog stick left/right - change pictures

In game menu now shows current Game (SFX), mp3CCDA and CDDA volume (if applicable).

Right analog stick left/right - game volume
Right analog stick up/down - music volume
Left analog stick left/right - CDDA volume
Left analog stick up/down - mp3CDDA volume

------------------------------------
Sorta implemented features (hidden).  Try selecting .xmv and .jpg/.png files while in the text file browser.
------------------------------------

- Ability to display documentation (.jpg)
- Commercials - Framework put in place for "mediabrowser"

-------------------
Changes to Mednafen
-------------------
* Modified the rewind controls to use the now standard method of mapping used by all other x-port emus.
* Customized the default mappings for emu (Only NES related mappings are displayed).
* mp3CDDA and CDDA have their own volume control now and are saved with each game configuration (only affects MednafenX_PCE).
- Still waiting on some Mapper changes by XTecuterX73.  But this is beta, so no big hurry.

Awesome to finally get this out there.  Hopefully this gets some well deserved coverage and renews some life into the scene.  Fortunately, it won't take a year for each release and there are now 16 XPORT emulators total that have been updated to some stage of the process so far.

I'm close to getting the NES to its true "final" state as far as the Xtras go.  When I do, I'll have to make a torrent of this stuff so people don't have to go through all the BS setting it up.  I've tried to make that as easy as possible, but for the casual gamer it's still a pretty daunting task and it would be a shame if a lot of people didn't experience the full effect of all of our work here because the learning curve is still kinda steep setting the Xtras up.

Dammit.  Rules here about stuff, rules there about stuff.  Even the torrent site I frequent that allows every rom under the sun won't allow me to post anything with XBox code in it, so even though I could post every other single thing on my NES setup they'd still have to go through the bitch of a time figuring out the "usual spot" for the first time if they've never used it before just to get the emulator.  Then we've got our "other spot" but there are so little people there it's hardly worth the effort.

Got to figure out the best way of doing this where it gets the most exposure and is set up so a 2 year old could do it.

Please... be smart.  If you have an idea, don't post it in the open forums.  By now most of you know of other ways to get in contact with me.

Congrats to everyone involved on the release!

Awesome to see that people are still working on the greatest homebrew system ever made.
Luckely I can now get Xboxes for $10 in bulk at my shop  lol.

I havent installed it yet because im so used to FCE,  but the screenshots look amazing.

Keep up the work.
Now all I need is a proper Ps1 emu that doesnt have to have different core settings amongst other things for each game I play   lol.

Again,  your work is very much appreciated here.

I'm a little confused on this release here. Does this come with the screenshots/boxart preinstalled? Like with Surreal 64? Or do you have to add all the boxart/screenshots manually like all the other emulators?

Beautiful release. I'm so happy you are keeping the xbox homebrew legacy going. I will try it out soon as xbins stops acting up for me. Thanks again.

Congrats to the whole team! We are still playing nes with my boyfriend in 2009 on our xbox thanks to guys like you!

edit: we have always wanted infos for our games (too lazy to spend hours on the Internet to search for infos for our obscure ones), it's really a huge and great work you have done!
We have ~500 nes games and the synopsis is displayed for almost 80% of them, in fact the synopsis is generally not displayed for our jap roms, is it normal?

For the moment we are using "sdtv big boxart big screenshot setting", and have downloaded the ressurectionXtras, our screenshots and boxarts are displayed in the same time; we haven't downoaded the videos previews yet
Is it possible to display videos when there is one, and display screenshot when there isn't videos?

At this point the only Japanese games that are covered are the ones that are part of the RessurectionXtra's.  But the Synopsis is designed in such a way that they can easily be added.  In fact if you have a game who's description you know is in the synopsis, but it doesn't come up.  Report the CRC that is displayed to us so we can add it.  You can easily add it yourself but by telling us it allows us to update the master synopsis file.

So if someone is willing to add descriptions for some missing stuff feel free to volunteer.  Be sure to see the synopsis hot potato thread and co-ordinate thru RessX.

Yes gilles999 has been gracious enough to set up his skins so that if there is no movie to display it will show the action and title shots (if available).  I personallly stream the movies off of a PC using a relax share.  Samba works as well but has a tendancy to timeout for some oddball reason.

Hey!  Welcome back.  I guess I'll have to figure out what to do with those mapper fixes.  Maybe I can upload a standalone default.xbe and tell people to download that if they want the fixes, until a full release is done.

Put it on alt.binaries.games.xbox
Once it is up on the newsgroups, heaps of people can access it and they don't have to worry about whether there are seeders, or any of that stuff. Then it tends to end up all over the torrent sites once the newsgroup leechers have pulled it down and started to share it in other ways.

hey thanks madmab! great work again, yea man im on and off but have been through alot in the last 4 months so i hope you guys can understand, losing your mom is really hard no matter what age you are or how tough you think you are.

yea, about the mapper fixes, these mapper fixes have allowed some hacks for games like mario brothers  that didnt work before to run now. lol.

so some extensive testing is in the background im sure. give me a day or two to get it all together and ill send you the files. all you pretty much need to do is just replace the corresponding files with the new ones, im sure you already know that though.  laugh.gif  while not a breakthrough by any means a few more good games is better than none im sure. tongue.gif

once again be on the lookout madmab and everyone.

I would just like to say Congrats to the entire team for their amazing dedication to this piece of work!

I have a few comments.

1. I believe to have found a bug in the emulator. There's a feature in the emulator where your able to cycle through whatever screenshots you have for whatever game is highlighted. If however you highlight a game, that has no screenshots at all, and cycle, the emulator will crash.

2. I'm a little confused on gettting dual images to appear. For example, I have Super Mario Bros 3. The screenshot folder for that game i have 3 png files in there. "000.png 001.png 002.png" a pic of the cartridge, a pic of the box, and a regular screenshot. My question is, are they supposed to be named differently to be seperate? do i need to manualy create a seperate screenshot folder or something?

3. I would like to personaly thank the team, for including my hack into the Synopsis! I feel very humbled to have found my hack,
"Megaman Ultra" in the Synopsis!  love.gif

For those that don't know what "Megaman Ultra" is, just YouTube it, people have uploaded many videos on it. You'll also find some videos of my current project Megaman Ultra 2 - The Rise of X" smile.gif

this is so cool !!!

hey madmab,
i am so impressed by what you (and the others) did, which is why i'd love to donate you a t-shirt.
i'm in the "custom-shirt-biz" and i think i can make a shirt for you scene-keepers who keep the good ole xbox scene alive.
i love my xbox1 ever since i had my first. (and that box is still going strong.)

and it's not me alone that is responsible, so i have to check with my mates first.
but i don't think that's a problem.
as i said, i don't have a design yet. and it could be that i can't come up with one for two to three weeks because i am in the process of opening our first shop, so, if you have an idea for a design, pm me.
also, if you don't have an idea (or don't want to design your own honor-shirt sleep.gif ), pm me anyway if you want it.
i think it should be something like "X-scene Keeper" (just a first thought).
you obviously deserve this. cool.gif

I'm not sure you can have dual boxarts/screenshots with the old screenshot system if i have understand it right?
I don't know if i can help you but we have just downloaded all the new enhanced artworks "ressurectionXtras" for nes (even the videos now), put it all in the "media folder"; all was ready, we just have to rename our roms with "romcenter".
And it works!I think the hardest part was to find the wmv to xmv converter (we have searched deeply in the forums how to find it -all is in xbins finally-). Perheaps a tutorial with detailled pics should be usefull?(now all the hard work is done and you will do the same "threatment" on some other emulators?

i think the xbmc devs (at least the xbox specific guys over there) would deserve one too (t3ch, for example).
so i would like to have a more general design.
if you have suggestions, pm me.

i think about opening a new thread where people can suggest someone who should get a shirt.
but who will get one is tied to the bold text above.

Gilles is one of us man.  He's definitely cool.   No Dynamic Skins without the man. cool.gif

I love the idea of a shirt, but I'm a little paranoid about the whole getting to know everybody personally (like addresses and stuff) in this questionably legal atmosphere.  I'll have to sleep on it, but I definitely appreciate the offer.  Glad to know there seem to be people here still that are interested in the updates.

infidelity - Interesting bug there.  I never would have noticed it since I have at least one piece of artwork for each game.  Good catch.

Like Princess Peach said, you need the "Enhanced Artwork" download to use the two-image previews.  Otherwise you're just limited to one image and the video.

Happy to have added your hack.  Stupot1 and I went through and added as many complete translations and good hacks we could find from RH.net.  (full name left out since the site may be illegal here).  We're hoping we didn't leave anyone out or miss out on any other great hacks.  BTW... how many people do you speak with there?  I tried getting in contact with them about permissions to use their info in the synopsis but nobody ever got back to me so I just went ahead and released it with all the hack/trans information from the site included (with the URL and reviewer included at the bottom of each one just like yours).  I didn't think there would be any problems, but it would be nice to know that they feel the same way.

Thanks for the hacks bro cool.gif

Princess peach - Don't see to many lady fans around here.  Glad you and your man are enjoying the hard work that went into this project.  cool.gif

Any Japan games you have that were text heavy or hard enough to read to make it not enjoyable for an English speaking player I didn't add to the Xtras (Videos/Boxart/Synopsis/etc.).  The synopsis is definitely a document that can/will evolve over time though.  If you have additions you'd like to make, or if there are games that I have included that aren't popping up for you and you need to add your CRC's just put a document together and send it to me.  If you have full games to add, please send them to me in the format used for all the games already included with the URL and any reviewer names at the bottom.  If its' just CRCs you need added, just name the game and provide the CRC and I'll see what I can do about adding them.  (I want to be the person to add things the the synopsis files personally so we dont' end up having 10 different synopsis' floating around).

XTecuterX73 - Can't wait to see your mapper fixes in the build and hope that you can figure out some of the more obscure unlicensed ones in teh future so maybe we can get Great Wall and the Chinese pirate versions of Final Fantasy VII and Chrono Trigger to work amongst others.   Any idea if we'll ever get Time Lord working right without having to jump through a bunch of hoops?

Sorry again about your loss man.  Take your time getting back into things and taking care of the personal real life stuff that is much more important than anything we're doing here.  I dont' think any of us are planning on going anywhere for a while.   cool.gif

dokworm - Thanks for the tip.  I never learned how to use newsgroups before.  Maybe now's the time?

madmab, Gilles, MM?, Stupot1, pCe and everyone else involved.... Great work guys!  One big emu down with 1,425 videos! Who's with me on the SNES and Gameboy next???????

P.S.  If I don't answer posts and PM's for a while, or at least as quick as usual it's because I'm going to take a little while to get some personal things taken care of and try to enjoy a little of this summer.  I've been alone in my cave too many hours missing all this nice weather.  I'll always be collecting any work you've done though and it will be there for me to incorporate when I have a few blocks of time here and there to get it in there.  And I'll still be working on synopsis stuff when I get a chance at work too.

P.P.S.  Cbagy.....????      "I thought it was a duck ?"

LOL... ain't you never heard of Adventure before?  In the land of A2600 all the dragons look like giant ducks.  It only makes sense, doesn't it?  They say that today's birds are descendants of yesterday's dinosaurs.

BTW... I just found out from theonion.com that Adventure is getting a 3D upgrade.  Check it out....

Yep, you can thanks Megaman(?) who has made many(all?) of them, and me for the rumbles smile.gif ;yay, all those rumbles have been created with my "s" controller, so it is hard to set the perfect values that will be ok for everyone; i don't remember exactly, but you can set all the rumbles values in the "cheat option" menu (just search a little in the "ingame option menu"  wink.gif )

There is probably a problem with the codelist.inf file at that point.  I'll have to look at it when I get back.  I'm out of town.  Megaman(?) might be able to figure out what it is before then.

It's kinda hard to test all those codes.  laugh.gif  But anways fixing them should be relatively easy.  The codelist.inf file is pretty much just a text file.

I'm not to sure which thread to find that in. There's so many different threads on xbox-scene relating to this project. Not sure if I overlooked it, but I'm having trouble finding this "Enhanced Artwork" for the nes skin.

OK, I still cannot get dual boxart/screenshots to appear at the same time, even after downloading the Enhanced Artwork

In my "nes" folder on my xbox, i have the following

"backrounds"
"emuskins"
"media" (this has the Enhanced Artwork Files/Folders)
"nesroms"
after those folders are all the files that make up the emu

Now, I tried renaming one of my roms to match the name of the pics for that particular game
For instance, "Addams Family"

I renamed my rom to say "Addams Family" which is zipped by the way, I load up the emulator, and when i hover over the rom "Addams Family" nothing appears in the boxes.

So then I went to the beginning of this thread, and it says to change the "Media" Directory. So I changed that to point to

F:/emulators/nes/media/artwork

it then asked me if I wanted the movie folder to act in the same way *nice auto feature by the way smile.gif* so I said yes.

now i went back to my roms, and when I hover over "Addams Family" I still got nothing????

Please, any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank You smile.gif

EDIT nevermind, i figured it out! I had the directory going directly in the "artwork" folder, where I should've had the directory going right into the "media" folder smile.gif WORKS!!!! smile.gif smile.gif

It's an issue with the number of CRC's for those games (most of which are probably bad dumps anyways).  Pretty much if a game had more than 48 crc's in the cheat code list it will bomb if you try to select it.  You can either remove the crc's you don't need, or just download my newly edited list.

I created a list and loaded a playlist from back when I released atarixlbox and they both seem to work fine.  Most x-port emu's store the playlists in the saves directory (wherever you have that pointed to) under a "PLAYLISTS" directory.

They also store the song names WITH the absolute pathname.  So if you moved those mp3 files since, that may be the problem as well.

But I did discover another issue with the "Music Control Menu" where the "Go to next/previous song" options weren't working.  So I fixed that and it will be available in the next release, whenever that is.

Anyone else having issues with the playlists?  I never had any issues but then I don't use them much.

1. I believe to have found a bug in the emulator. There's a feature in the emulator where your able to cycle through whatever screenshots you have for whatever game is highlighted. If however you highlight a game, that has no screenshots at all, and cycle, the emulator will crash.
Looks like it only does it if you press "left" on the left analog stick.  For now just don't do it.  laugh.gif  But I have fixed it for the next release.

Thank you for your report.  biggrin.gif

nah, i didn't move anything, and i'd only made two other playlists before i picked up this emulator, and both were for the pcsxbox (v20). i have to go back to a different emulator to save a playlist, as this one will create the playlist file that i create, but it won't save any songs to one, leaving them blank. i checked in the playlists folder, and i found the new playlists that i created, but the m3u files were blank. once you "add one song to playlist" by pressing the A button, that's it, right?

also in the "Music Control Menu" when i select "View Currently Playing Playlist," instead of showing the two songs currently saved on the playlist that works, it only shows the first two games in my "nesroms" folder, or the first two files in whatever folder i set music directory to. and whenever i switch skins, the music directory will display whatever directory i saved, it just still goes back to the default (?) directory, "nesroms," until i go back and set the music directory again.

another thing when i'm selecting games, the default directory, i assume, is the nesroms directory, but it only displays as 'D:/'. the directory display at the top of the list is one folder behind. so if i'm in 'D:/emuskins', it says "D:/', and when i'm in "D:/emuskins/Static Mario (SNES Style)', it says 'D:/emuskins'.

my NES folder is in the F:/emu folder, if that matters. i know that the D drive listed up there is just for default, but maybe it's weird that my folder's in the F drive instead of E.

Interesting to see these things.  Stuff none of us ever caught since it wasn't our own personal focus.

I've never paid any attention to the play lists myself, except to say that it would be cool to have some sort of randomizer and more good songs to play so each time it starts up it plays a different song.

I've also had a great deal of artwork since you started doing this madmab, so i never would have seen that other bug either.

ok I fixed the problem with the "view playlist" showing directories instead of the first two songs in a playlist.  I'll reupload this to Xbins (overwriting the last upload) as well as putting up a standalone XBE for those who do not feel like downloading everything for one little fix.

Anyways here is a summary of the latest fixes/changes.

Potential bugs:
+ playlists made with other x-port emulators not working in MednafenX-NES.

Fixes:
+ Fixed issue where games that had more than 48 CRCs in the cheat code database would cause a crash when game is selected while searching for cheat codes.

+ Fixed issue with the "Music Control Menu" where the "Go to next/previous song" options were not working.

+ Fixed issue where cycling thru screenshots when non-available would create an infinite loop.
+ Fixed issue where "View playlist" did not show the first two songs.

+ Fixed issue where "pause" would still display even after changing songs while viewing the playlist in "clear screen" mode.

General ToDo:
- Improve how the cheatcode database allocates RAM

Just a side note.  For now games that had more than 37 CRC codes in the cheat database will show up twice in the list until I get around to doing the above listed "ToDo".

it's funny, because i'd just started using playlists about a week before this public beta. it just seemed cool to have a couple of songs play randomly when a certain emulator and theme popped up. which works fine once the playlist is set and the songs are set to shuffle

anyway, i believe that the x-port playlists weren't necessarily meant to run across emulators. if you take a look at the m3u files, it seems that a lot of them list the directories of their music files as just something like "D:/emuskins/sonic/sonic.mp3", or "D:/emuskins/lom/domina.mp3".

so yeah, they'd work fine playing from their specific emulators, but in another emulator, 'D:/emuskins' wouldn't be their default. aside from revamping all the other emulators, the only other way would be to edit all the m3u playlist files in notepad, and set true directories for each song, like 'F:/emu/neogenesis/emuskins/sonic/sonic.mp3'. they should play anywhere for any xport emulator with playlists that way.

Hey madmab, thanks for fixing the crc's on the cheat codes.  That's really cool.
Now I have another suggestion for you.  Ok, the controllers for player 1 and player 2 are mapped to xbox ports 1 and 2.  Could there be an option to turn on in order to map them to xbox ports 3 and 4 as well?  I know this would be helpful in Mini Putt (a great multiplayer game by the way).  You can play with 4 players in that game, but you only can use two controllers.

Thanks for you time.

Now for the bad news, I checked out your playlist fixed version and the the volume is broken (oops, broken in previous release too) If you change it, it minuses out, the only way to regain is go back in the ini and zero out bgmvolume. Seems to only happen with playlist audio.

example:
sfxvolume=0
bgmvolume=-9840
mcdvolume=0
cdavolume=0
movvolume=0

I think I have found another bug.  During a game if you go into game utilities and view text file and then return to the game, the music for the emulator runs full blast.  You can turn it down with the right thumbstick and turn the game music up as well.  Just a heads up.   smile.gif

Did you ever try this above madmab and see if it happened to you too?  Come to think of it, I had messed around with txt files a bit before while testing your new builds and that very well may have been one of the things that I did that made the volume go to full blast again the few times it would seem to do it for no apparent reason.

I'll have to try it out this weekend and let you know if I see the same thing.

Any ideas on how to get the wordwrap function to work right so we can start getting some gamefaqs together?  It's kind of an next-to-impossible and hardly worthwhile effort with the way the wordwrap works (doesn't work) now.

Oh.... and I'm working on a surprise especially for you.

ok I think I got this one.  It's due to a misnamed variable when I split of the mp3CDDA and CDDA volume controls into seperate variables.  The mix-up actually happens when the user plays a game.

I'm not gonna upload a new version just yet I wanna tweak around with the wordwrap code in the text file viewer.

Well that kinda creates a problem.  Like...

How to handle conflicts when both controller 1 and controller 3 are used at the same time.  For example a player on controller 1 presses d-pad left and a player on controller 3 presses the A button.

Some emulated systems literally freak when two directions are pressed simultaneously (like pressing both left and right on a dpad).

On another note.... good news for me!

I finally found a BFM debug BIOS that my Xbox actually likes that can access the F partition and allow me to access the normal E partition from the Xbox Neighborhood icon.  This means alot less hassle for me jumping thru hoops when trying to debug or work on the systems that I have stored on drive F because they use larger files!!  Been trying to fix this for about a year now..  laugh.gif

2ndly.  I think I got the text viewer to word wrap correctly.  It had two issues.. It didn't properly word-wrap and it would double space stuff.  I won't know 100% till I can tinker with it in the AM since I had to go into work.

3rdly.  The media browser does not like some of the larger .jpg files for some reason and it was mistakenly labelling them as potentially bad.  A good example is the 10 yard fight manuals.  Which are wider than they are are tall.  It kicks out an out of memory error, even on emu's that use less memory.  So they may need to be resized.  Anyways I removed the option it gives to "delete" these bad files since that is probably a bad idea.  laugh.gif

ok I think I got this one. It's due to a misnamed variable when I split of the mp3CDDA and CDDA volume controls into seperate variables. The mix-up actually happens when the user plays a game.

Sounds great madmab. Just one question, you said "The mix-up actually happens when the user plays a game," what if I haven't selected a game and this still happens? In other words, while testing this I haven't loaded any games only launched emu, selected playlist then adjusted volume. I realize you also said "It's due to a misnamed variable..." so I was just hoping to clarify.

Will be looking forward to test new release.

I am interested in your results... has been bugging me also, especially accessing the normal E, already have access to F though.

Again, let me say Thank You for your hard work and this soon to be Most Excellent release.

The code changes the wrong variable when a game is started so the problem occurs at that moment.  But is not noticeable until aftwards when the user tries to change the music volume or exits and reloads the emu.

The debug bios I switched to is TATX and it kinda works like this (from the PC).

B: "volume" is the fully mapped E: drive
D: "Active Title Media" is mapped to whatever the current application running has it set to.
E: "Game Development Volume" is the debug directory itself where it stores all your compiled emulators
F: "Memory Unit 1A" is mapped to the F: drive.  I'm not sure if this changes when a mem card is plugged in.

When running the programs/emu/whatever all the drives are mapped as normal.  So I can actually access the larger files that I keep on drive F:.  Making things alot easier to test.

Happens to me without doing any of the above. I took the ini from saves that the emu created, edited rom dir etc. and placed it in the emu dir so I can force reload. Just launching emu and changing volume with playlist selected and I lose volume. There is an audible disk noise that follows if I attempt to adjust the volume. File viewer shows that the playlist is still active. I hope this info helps. Any ideas?

Umm... did that require a special file or edit in dxt?

By the way, thanks for the info and I take it that is the bios in the usual place?

Thank you for your hard work, time and effort into this project.

I FINALLY SOLVED THE BUG FOR THE NEW BETA WITH TXTFILE WORDWRAP!!!!

Here's my notes guys.   I highlighted suggested fixes for the txtfile viewer and also what the culprit was.   cool.gif

Using the build modified on 07/12/09 (old)
Also using build modified on 08/09/09 (new)

Problem is not the dynamic skin.  I set it up so a static skin would load, put the new XBE over and it still froze on the XPORT splash screen.

It's not mednafenx_nes.ini or skin_settings.ini since I've deleted them, loaded the XBox with both with the old xbe and the new one first and it still freezes either way.

I would assume that it's not the videos, artwork, roms, screenshots, saves, or any of the other media directoires because they're all set back to the default with the new INI files and every one of those categories is pointing to empty folders.

It's not the MP3 itself, because when I remove the mp3 completely the Box still freezes at the splash screen; it just doesn't play any music obviously.

It's not my XBox itself since I've tried it on a v3 and a v1 XBox and they both have this problem.  (It could be the box, but there would have to be an explanation why I can so easily emulate this bug on a 2nd console and I could do whatever it is I'm doing wrong twice).

Note: Now it's definately not the Xtras since this box only has the old screenshot pack and no videos. I'm also starting to suspect that it is either a file that would be specific to my custom setup or something that madmab may not be using in his test emu setup that I have.

It's not custom_launch_params.cpp or custom_launch_params.h since I deleted those and the emu still froze on boot.

I'm going to try something new.  Okay.... so I deleted everything in the emulator folder now except for the following:

custom_launch_params.cpp (since I don't know what the heck this does)
custom_launch_params.h (since I don't know what the heck this does)
default.xbe
Latest-NES.txt (to test the txtfile viewer if it the emu loads)
undocumented.h (since I don't know what the heck this does)

SUCCESS!  (Now I have to figure out what I can put back on one at a time and we'll find out what the bad one is)

Uh-oh... new problem....  Used txtfile viewer on Latest-NES.txt.  Adjust screen and it asks me if I want to adjust it for all games (???)  I said yes and the screen went black and the Box froze again.  (The music keeps playing though).

Restarted box and went into textfile viewer.  Word wrap works!!!!!!  I also re-adjusted the screen answering "NO" to the question about resizing for all games and it didn't freeze on me now. (Don't know why it froze before??? Can we remove the question about resizing all games to that position so this doesn't happen again to anyone???)

NOTE:  Not sure if you can fix this too madmab, but when I stretch the screen out to match my output and go back to the txt file it cuts about the bottom 1/8 of the text (just black).  I can fix this though by stretching the screen down below my actual screensize on the bottom and with trial and error I can get it to show text on the full screen.

BOTTOM LINE HERE:  TXT FILE VIEWER WORKS NOW!!!!

Now... back to testing what was messing up the emulator....

Added back 6 pallet files.  No problem.
Added back all text files.  no problem.
Added back mednafenx_nes_v12b (Dummy file for emu name and version) and default.tbn.  No problem.

Added back codelist.inf and codelist2.inf.... PROBLEM!!!!!!!!! XBOX FROZEN!!!!!!!!

Removed codelist2.inf... still a problem.
Added codelist2.inf back, removed codelist.inf.... no problem.

Well boys... it looks like we have a winner.

codelist.inf can bite my ass.

Whaddaya want we should do with him boss?

EDIT:  HERE it is.

Could one of you guys upload whatever the newest codlist file(s) that works with this beta? I don't know what the heck is wrong with mine.

Thanks!

EDIT2:  OOPS!  Another txtfile problem.  When I went to change the font size after loading the setting it up to fit my screen it froze the box on me again.  UPDATE:  Now whenever I try to browse a txt file it freezes the XBox when it tries to load it.  I don't think the code wants you to alter the font size after you've set the word wrap!!!!

Another suggestion too.  Could we make it so the left joystick will NOT move the text left or right anymore?  Now that wordwrap works we don't need that and it is really annoying since it's so easy to do accidentally while reading a FAQ.

EDIT3:  Another bug, lol...  When you start the TXT file viewer it acts funny for the folder view.  It puts me in the F:\ drive with my choice to go up a directory or to go to <media>.  I select the media folder and nothing is in there.  I back out of the media folder and all of my folders on the F:\ drive are there.  I select Media again and it now contains the media folders for all of my emulators.

That's an awful lot of red there RessX!!!

Let's see what we can do here..

Yeah I kinda knew about this.  Just forgot to address it while I was focusing on the wordwrap...

When I went to change the font size after loading the setting it up to fit my screen it froze the box on me again. UPDATE: Now whenever I try to browse a txt file it freezes the XBox when it tries to load it. I don't think the code wants you to alter the font size after you've set the word wrap!!!!

Well I thought we sorta kinda decided to remove this feature?  Increase font size used to be mapped to the Start button which should now bring up the help screen.  Although I never did unmap the "back" button which attempts to decrease the font size.

Hmmm looks like those controls were also mapped to the right analog stick.  The help file (and screen) hint that ony the simulated font width should be increased (press Y to use simulated font width), yet the code does it regardless.  Odd....  blink.gif

Another suggestion too. Could we make it so the left joystick will NOT move the text left or right anymore? Now that wordwrap works we don't need that and it is really annoying since it's so easy to do accidentally while reading a FAQ.

I suppose so.  I find it annoying because it tends to drift on it's own with my controllers.  laugh.gif

Uh-oh... new problem.... Used txtfile viewer on Latest-NES.txt. Adjust screen and it asks me if I want to adjust it for all games (???) I said yes and the screen went black and the Box froze again. (The music keeps playing though).

Odd.. It must be caught in some kinda weird loop..

(Don't know why it froze before??? Can we remove the question about resizing all games to that position so this doesn't happen again to anyone???)

Let me look into this because it will also affect that option when you change the ingame screen size.

I'll try and look when I get a chance.  I knew the day would eventually come when I would have to work on the txt file viewing code.  I never paid much mind to it but I knew once we started working on the media browser I would have to go over it.  I just avoided it because I knew it would be alot of work.  laugh.gif  In fact the only "real" change I made to it was the help screen and the latest "word wrap" tweaks.   huh.gif

QUOTE
codelist.inf can bite my ass.
laugh.gif  Is this the latest codelist.inf that I upped?  Koitsu didn't seem to have any issues with it.  Regardless I'll check it out cause it should allow me to further "bomb proof" the gamelist reading code.

On a side note... I did confirm that "Force Reload D:\\*.ini Settings" does do weird things.

THE NEW TEXT FILE VIEWER CODE IS SWEEEET!

Finally it seems to be working without any Box-killing bugs.  Word Wrap function seems to work perfectly now so if gameFaqs are cleaned up (hard returns removed, for the most part) they will be perfectly viewable in-game.

-------------------

Now, madmab... for the in-game menu, since we're getting to the bottom of the whole media viewer thing.

First, when I go to the in-game options the menu line says the following:

In Game Options (17), SFX(100), mp3CDDA(100), CD.... (cuts off there)

Is there any reason we display all of that, and if not, could we just remove all of it and just leave "In-Game Options" and center it (also adding a hyphen between "In" & "Game")?

To clean up the in-game menu and make it more user friendly, I suggest we set it up this way:

Return to Game
Exit Game
Save/Load Game (Renamed from "Game Utilities" since we'd be "trimming the fat" here)
--->Save State
--->Load State
(Removing "Current State" because you can pick and choose which state to use when you're loading or saving already. Removing Recording/Playback options since this never worked (or is completely unnecessary when we have real videos now), Removing option to turn screenshot capture on/off since that can be done in the settings outside of the game, Removing "View Text File" since there will be a main menu option for that, Removing "Take Screenshot" since there will be a main menu option for that)
View Text File/Other Media (I assume from previous discussions that once in this option I can load either a movie or a picture or a text file from it so there would be no need for a sub-category here)
Cheat Codes
(I'd like to suggest that we do something to make this more user friendly.  I don't know much about cheat codes at this time, but these options are confusing as hell to a newbie)
Controller/Video Configuration (Renamed from "Configuration")
--->Controller Configuration
--->Video Configuration
------->Game Screen Size/Position (Adding the "/" character)
------->Software Filter: (Add ":" since it display's the filter afterwards)
------->XBox Hardware Filtering: (Add ":" since it display's the filter afterwards)
------->Force PAL50 Mode (PAL only): (Add ":" since it display's the filter afterwards)
------->Flicker Filter Level: (Add ":" since it display's the filter afterwards)
------->Soften Display: (Add ":" since it display's the filter afterwards)
------->10x11 Pixel Aspect Ratio: (Add ":" since it display's the filter afterwards)
(Remove "Move Menu Text" since it's irrelevant in-game.  We also may want to remove other features here as well since I'm sure we can set them up outside of the game for all games and I never use any of them besides Game Screen Size/Position and possibly Software Filter)
Take Screenshot
Reset Game
Insert/Eject FDS Disk
Select FDS Disk
Insert Coin
Toggle DIP #1
Toggle DIP #2
Toggle DIP #3
Toggle DIP #4
Toggle DIP #5
Toggle DIP #6
Toggle DIP #7
(Without any objections I'd remove all the crap in red too.  As long as I've been working on this I've never once used any of them.  I assume they're for Play Choice 10, but who the hell wants to play a Play Choice 10 game anyways when you could just play the real game?  I've removed all that crap from my sets).

So....

To clean it up without the notes, I suggest this be what the in-game menu looks like:

Return to Game
Exit Game
Save/Load Game
--->Save State
--->Load State
View Text File/Other Media
Cheat Codes
Controller/Video Configuration
--->Controller Configuration
--->Video Configuration
------->Game Screen Size/Position
------->Software Filter:
------->XBox Hardware Filtering:
------->Force PAL50 Mode (PAL only):
------->Flicker Filter Level:
------->Soften Display:
------->10x11 Pixel Aspect Ratio:
Take Screenshot
Reset Game

What do you think guys?

Anyways as it is now.. I'd rather just work on getting the media browser up to speed (and maybe removing those extra Play Choice 10 options when not needed.  I've already (hopefully) removed the extra MP3_CDDA and CDDA options which should only be present in the TG16/PCE emulator.

I'm probably gonna be on a little programmer hiatus.  I've been hacking away quite a bit on the atarixlbox emulator lately.  As well as fixing up the little bugs in MednafenX_NES, oh and practically did a complete re-write of the unzip code because of a little issue created with Winuaex laugh.gif  and wanna take a little mini break.

The in-game options contains thoe numbers so the user knows what the volume is for the different sound elements.  Especially since we are giving them the option to adjust those.  Also since we are no longer "maximizing" the SFX volume I don't want the user being confused when they accidently lower the volume to un-hearable and wonder why.  laugh.gif  In the case of the NES, though.  I don't think the last two are even used.  They are carried over because of the PCE emulation.  I should probably put some #ifdef's in there somewhere to remove those for the NES and the LYNX.

Ahhh... I see.   There's probably a better place to put those though, don't you think?  I just think it looks a little sloppy being on the same line as the title for the In-game menu.  Valuable information though.  I just didn't know what I was looking at there.

I'd rather not mess with the default "In Game" options ( Return to game, Exit Game, Configuration, Cheat Codes, and Game Utilites).  They are kept to a minimum for a reason.  Each emu is different on how many extra options it adds so the less clutter the better.

Whoops... I don't think you understood what I meant here.  This was all about paring things down to a minimum.  I'm definitely not talking about adding things.  I think there is a ton of stuff in the in-game menu that is cluttering it up needlessly.  I think the current setup is far from "minimum".

Not necessarily..  It's there in case the user has "Always display save state menu" set to "No" and a button mapped to load and save states.  They need a way of changing the "slot" used.

I suppose that could stay there then, although I don't know why somebody would choose to do it that way.  I still think the Game Utilities should be changed to "Load/Save Game" and just have "Save State", "Load State" and "Current State".... removing all the other options in that menu.

This does work and it does not record video.  It records all controller input from a certain save point and can play that back.  I use it all the time..  tongue.gif

Ah.... what for?  Testing purposes?  I don't understand enough about the benefit of having this in there for the average user who isn't testing stuff.

I don't think the user would be too happy if screenshot capture was on and they loaded a game and had no way of turning it off quickly.  I've used this to capture Miner 2049'er shots for my miner skin (which is now defunct btw).  laugh.gif

Assuming that people have my Xtras there shouldn't be any need to ever have screenshots on, except for a possible very rare occasion, so it should be off by default.  At the very least, people should have my artwork packs if they don't want the videos.  And if they're too lazy to do that even, I doubt they'd use the screenshot feature at all in the first place.  My Xtras aren't going away like the repository did.  I plan on using every outlet I can to get them out there when I'm ready for release.  Short of government intervention I think the Xtras are going to long outlast emulation on the XBox.

I dunno.. Have not really decided what to do with this.  I thought of changing it to something like "Media Browser".  But I know we discussed the option of having a seperate menu so it can dump the user in specific directories (for example Faqs or documentation), and hopefully at or close to the game being played.

Before having used the feature in-game when you fixed the word wrap I thought we'd need something like this.  If you can code it, it would be great, but don't you think that would be at least as difficult as coding the alternate favorites or the sort/filter feature?  I don't think we'll ever have enough of a Faq collection built up to justify your time coding that feature, and I really can't think of any other category which would benefit from it.  If I wanted to look at the artwork/movies, I'd just scroll through the games.  I actually kinda like how it just opens right into your media folder now and you can choose which media you want to look at from there.  I'm definitely open to new ideas on this if you have any though.

Not sure what to say about this.  I think it is just about as easy as it can get.  I did add descriptions for the code Types which used to be just numbers only.  I always thought that the "Add Game Genie Code" should be moved up.

Maybe it is.... It's still a freakin' pain in the ass though.  Way too many options, and they're extremely verbose without saying anything.  They often tend to do what I dont' expect them to do.  Good thing I won't use them much since I generally hate cheats when it comes to any game but Snake Rattle 'n Roll since that game was designed by the same company as Game Genie and I'm convinced it was made only to push more Game Genie sales.

Not sure why this is in there.  Although I do remember using it at on point to move the text so I could see it, but I honestly forgot.

Yep... can't see a use for it after the Dynamic Skins are created for all the emus.  Menu text shouldn't need to be fixed... especially in game.

I'm not gonna remove menu options just because I don't use them.  Actually on occasion I have.  But as I have found with the beta issues that just because I don't use a feature does not mean other people don't.  "Show screenshots while scrolling" and "0 seconds on Auto-Advance" anyone?

I'm not saying remove them completely... just from the in-game menu to de-clutter it.  You can still get to any "removed" options through the regular menus.

I think there are actually a couple games in the RessX set that use the FDS.  Anyways I was planning on having those only show up when a game that uses them (Play Choice 10) is running.  So for all intents and purposes they will be gone.  Just had not got around to it.

Yeah... I forgot to address the FDS stuff separately.  I never used the in-game menu for that though.  I had the black and white buttons set so you could eject a disk, flip it, then re-insert it right in the game.  I can't remember if the emulator was set up that way standard or if I did that on my own, but it works like a dream and since the NES barely uses any buttons they were open for this task.

Do people really play Play Choice 10 games?  Why?  Completely useless roms in my book.  They were all ditched when it came to the Xtras, and I'm pretty generous with what I actually allow in my sets compared to BP on MAME.

Anyways I added the "/" and ":" in.  I figured someone would ask about that eventually.  laugh.gif

Good man.  I never noticed how silly that looked until yesterday when I was plotting this out.

Anyways as it is now.. I'd rather just work on getting the media browser up to speed (and maybe removing those extra Play Choice 10 options when not needed. I've already (hopefully) removed the extra MP3_CDDA and CDDA options which should only be present in the TG16/PCE emulator.

I got away from it completely for about 5 days.  That's a personal best for me for quite a while.   laugh.gif

Don't piss off the better half man.  My old man did that once.......

.... once.

I liked those ideas for the media directory before, but they seem a bit extravagant now given the other things we still need.  Also, since then I've made some personal leaps in directory structure that gets very little discussion here.  Actually, when I used this last beta and used the in-game text viewer for the first time it worked great... dumping me in the very folder I have my videos, screenshots, enhanced artwork, gameFaqs, and even saves.  Anything else I have will go in this folder too.  I love having everything together like this.

So..... I'd not worry about that feature at all now.  Once we get the in-game menu completed and the ability to look at media stuff is a direct option it pretty much works perfect now.  (I didn't even know there was an in-game "text" viewer before since it was buried).

The only thing that could be fixed on it is to get a better fixed width font and I think we're set.....

Oh, wait... I forgot about the image viewer.  That could probably use some work when we get the in-game option working better.  So... text is near perfect, I'm sure videos are great... just might need work on the image viewer.

What semantics on the favorites need to be worked out?  I didn't think it was much more than how we'd select it.  I forget most of that conversation so I hope you took notes  cool.gif

For some strange reason I cannot seem to find the conversation where I mentioned them.  I'm wondering if it was in the old MednafenX-NES pre beta thread over on that other place before they changed forums.

It had to do with how the interface would operate based on the functions that we wanted.  Since most of the buttons are already used in the favorites list we really only have back and Y free a seperate menu would have to be brought up.

My brain is kinda fried tonight...   blink.gif

I'm cool with a separate menu for that.   I figure once the ability is programmed there would probably be some interest out there to make Top Lists off of magazines and internet sites.  Also we could pack releases with favorites lists that the major contributers have come up with.  For most of the major emulators I would think that there would be enough alternate lists used to warrant that extra menu.

I was thinking just to have them always on or always off instead.  I thought it might be easier to code.  Whatever is easier for you.

Just a little update on the latest happenings...

I finally did it. I implemented a "Rewind frameskip" option whereas rewind can be set-up to "skip" X amount of frames before it creates a "snapshot".  Got this idea a while back when x-port said he used it in GBAX.  Well now I have it set up so it can be used for any emu....

So what?  Do you say?  Well here are some of the advantages...

1)  Allows games that have performance problems when rewind is activated to still be able to be run with rewind on.  Atarixlbox was particularly borderline with this one.  5200 games typically ran great but other titles with a larger "footprint" tended to have performance issues.

2)  Systems that had problems with rewind, or where it may have not been feasable may just be feasable now.

3)  For you filter freaks.  If there is a filter that creates a "performance hit".  Between it and rewind it may slow a game down.  Now with a "Rewind frameskip" this can be alleviated a bit.

4)  Because I said so!  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif)

At this point rewind does not really affect MednafenX-NES that much.  But if I succeed with what I am doing with atarixlbox, that may not be the case in the near future.  Let's just say I got something working on atarixlbox.  Just not sure how well it will "translate" to other emu's.  This is a bit new to me.

On a side note as X-port mentioned.  There seems to be a little bug with the compression code used by the rewind code where if the compressed size ends up larger than the compressed data it will freak (aka lock) while rewinding.

I put in a minor tweak to fix 1 specific issue.  But I also placed a little debugging info in there to make it more obvious when and how often it is happening.  So maybe I'll be able to fix the bugger.

I'm trying to put together a skin for this emulator. The problem I'm having is that I enter the in-game options and adjust size and position of the screenshot, but when I next start the emulator it's gone back to the top right hand corner. I've even tried manually editing the skin_settings.ini but it doesn't make a difference.

Any ideas?

Have you tried saving the skin configuration when you have everything the way you want it?

I'm not sure how much you know about the subject from the boards, and I never looked at the documentation available so I don't know how much of a help it is to you.

There is a new feature where you can create and save many different skin configurations within one skin now.  When you make all of your changes, you need to select "Save Skin Configuration" in the Skin Configuration menu.  Name it whatever you want, then leave the emulator and come back and see if it works for you.

Play around a bit with Gilles' skin first to get the hang of it too.  He included many images to mess around with and see what you can come up with.  It's really a great system and I'm excited to see how inventive people can get with it once they figure it out.  It took us months of going back and forth on things to get it where it is at today.

Let me know if that works for you.

Thanks for the exact spot Frank.

Where's your skin at man?  I haven't seen you post any screenshots about it for a long time.  It looked cool.  I'd love to see them and cbagy's stuff in with the standard Gilles skins.

Something else I'd love to see is somebody updating the awesome SMB nes skins and the Sonic skin and Bonk skin for dual previews.  I mean REALLY see it updated so the end user could control all sorts of stuff on it.  With all that cool animation I bet you could do some awesome things with those skins if they were compiled right.

That image with the dragon could be used somewhere else.  Do you still have the sprite folder in there with the download?

Cool... I will.

Interesting... did you somehow manage to get the title shot and action shot to show up in two separate windows, or is that a photo-manip showing the video playing with a screenshot?

BTW... I love the intro image.  By now, the image of the Dragon is synonomous to Madmab for me.  Having it there on the splash screen is like saying Madmab Edition without saying it.

What seems to be cool about your skin is that we could pretty easily port it over to all the emulators.  From the screenshots, all I think we'd need is an intro splash screen from you for all of the emus.  In the emu itself we'd need a screenshot for a popular game from the system to go in the background and we have plenty of those.

Of course, if you wanted to be really professional about it, we'd need screenshots of your configurations so they'd show up when you scrolled through them to see what they look like.  Probably a few other things to differentiate between them.

Thanks for uploading it.

Later,

Ooooh shiny....  There is a delay option in there somewhere to set how long the opening title screen waits.  But what you would probably have to do is set the sprite to continuosly animate.  I forget the exact wording.  Gilles could probably explain it better..

Lots of cool stuff you can do with this image in Gilles skins Frank.

Currently on the SNES setup I have a video preview towards the left middle that takes up about 65% of the screen.  Towards the right hand side at the top (under the banner) I have the Boxart & Screenshots, and beneath that I have a real cool setup.

First I have the "XPORT - SNES9XBOX" green image that Gilles uses on the splash screen in the bottom right corner.   Just a bit above that I have the Nintendo logo, but it's transparancy is turned way up so it's just a faded image above the background.  Then using the movement options and the Top/Bottom/Right/Left settings I've managed to make your picture above kind of sway back and forth like a metronome over the Nintendo logo.

It really looks freaking great.

I never knew that you could have that much control over animation.  There are still some things that annoy me about how one picture will always overlap another no matter how you switch them around.  For some reason Frank, your spinning Dragon always seems to hide out behind other images and the only way I can get it to look good layered over something is if I have the transparency turned way down on the other image like I do with the Nintendo Logo now.  Very frustrating that we haven't figured this annoyance out yet.

All of this makes me think that we could benefit from alternative images to play around in these skins Gilles.

1) What would be cool is to have a "Madmab Edition" logo without the dragon, for starters.  I wanted to incorporate the "Madmab Edition" logo in this, but it doesn't look right having a dragon snapping to the right of it when you're using the rotating one too.

2) It would also be cool to have a madmab snapping logo that was separate from the logo, so you'd just have the dragon snapping.

3) I guess any cool images/logos you can think of which would be generic and work on any of the skins.  I'm a huge fan of your ability to make images which have invisible backgrounds.

What do you think?

EDIT:  Oh, Frank... how rude of me.  I tried out your skin and it looks great.  So simplistic in its design but you can tell that a lot of top shelf effort and skill went into it.  The splash screen just puts the icing on the cake.  Here's hoping you port this at least to all of the emulators I'm making Xtras for.  Thanks for sharing.

In emulator main menu it's v10.6pb

I'll have to send you the config file for what I did with the dragon on the SNES on Gilles' skins.  Actually, I'll have to upload the entire skin so you have the dragon in the right folder.

It's like my FULL TILT config, but because of the shape of the SNES boxes I was able to have a large amount of space underneath the box/screenshot area that I have a cool effect going on with the dragon.

It's kinda like this:

<------(NINTENDO)------>

The Nintendo logo is about 1/2 transparent right in the middle of the path of the dragon.  The arrows above represent the dragon sprites that spin around and sway from left to right over the logo at a relaxed pace, like a pendulum.

Unfortunately, anything I did could not make the Dragon float in front of the logo, so I had to put a somewhat transparent version on top of it, but it still looks good.

Hopefully we can have better control over which sprite is over the next in future updates (madmab  happy.gif )

question. why is the volume on the left thumbstick? when all the other volumes in every other app is on the right thumb stick.

There's 3 or 4 different volumes to control.  The in-game music/sound and the skins BGM are controlled by the right thumbstick (Up & Down/Left & Right).  I can't remember which volume is controlled by the left joystick at the moment, but it was because there was no more room to do it on the right.

When V11 is released everything will be moved into a seperate menu, but keep in mind the volume controls are still mapped within the game so it is usually a good idea to unmap them.

X-port used to get around this by resetting the volume to full on each game load.

That feature kinda got removed once I switched to dual preview skin support.  So atm it doesn't work.  I would have to put the feature back in.  I guess I figured no one really used it since a movie typically "conveys" what a game is about better than a screenshot.

Yeah, I see what you mean. A movie definitely conveys what the game is about.

But I found scrolling through the game list with instant movie playing delivers a very "hectic" experience for game selection. I liked that old delay between title screen and the preview demos, I could scroll through "game title screens" and when I waited some seconds the movie played. Like an old arcade machine, right? Get what I mean? An easy solution might be a quick new variable hack-in like "movie delay" and a quick wait loop for "movie delay" seconds before playing preview movies. This combined with the title screen beneath the movie preview could deliver the old experience. Just a suggestion. smile.gif

Oh, another thing: A movie delay could help with the streaming of movie previews from a pc to the xbox through relax or samba, because if you scroll fast with the triggers of the controller the scrolling begins to stutter, cause the box tries to copy files constantly. With a movie delay playback, the box would wait a set time before it would copy over the selected movie to play and fast-scrolling could be smooth again. The scrolling experience might become smoother for those who use movie streaming.

Nope, actually I meant the title screen to be _under_ the video. So the movie would actually start to play on top of it, the movie taking the same size and exact position as the title screen under it. The old xport versions offered that option so one could scroll through the title screens and if I'd want to see a gameplay preview I'd just keep the selection for like 3 seconds on it and the title screen would disappear and the movie would appear instead in its place. Well, I kinda like ressurections Fulltilt.ini for madmabs nes edition with that big preview window for movies. I'd just like to use this in combination with the title screens before the preview movies start. I can do this with the old xport emus but unfortunately they don't seem to support preview movie streaming, so unfortunately I can't have the good of both worlds. xD

(Yes, I got the movie streaming working with madmabs edition - that's a great feature btw, thanks alot!)

I see, well the top large picture is actually the video running (with action shot in the same location) but as its a staic pic it looks like a static action shot.
I know what you mean now, if the Movie preview had a delay option then the artwork would be shown till it advanced to the movie.

Sorry no damn edit feature for me, lol
The actual Screenshots still work in the old Xport style manner.
Titles and Action shots can still be configured in the manner that you mention.

You know.. I think I'll go ahead and add that feature.  As it is right now (believe it or not it waits 3 hundredths of a second).  But I've always considered increasing the delay because of a similar experience (or having it stop copying the movie file if the user presses on the dpad).

In the meantime one other way you can help "alieve" this is by setting "show screenshot while scrolling" to No and use the left/right triggers.

I never did anything about this because I never had any feedback on it.  I think I was the only "tester" using streaming movies.

Cool, I'm glad that I could provide feedback about that feature. I believe it could be an important part of all your new emulators because of all those without the money or time (or because other restrictions) to install a bigger HD into their Xboxes.

@cbagy
Yup, title and action shots work that way. The cool thing about variable movie delay would be that someone could combine that with the title, the action shot and then the movie all in one place, if they want to.
