Runtime (you might remember him as the co-founder of XboxMediaCenter(info)) mailed us about Transcode 360, a new tool for Xbox 360 and Windows MediaCenter he released today:

The underlying mechanism for transcoding and streaming is much the same as /mceDivX360 however the user-interface is more tightly integrated with Windows Media Center, and generally more robust and easy to use.
The installation is pretty straightforward, it's all automated. If you run into any problems have a quick read through the included manual, the sections on optimization and troubleshooting are well worth reading.
The software runs in the background as an NT service, and with a few tweaks you can even shift the burden of transcoding to a more powerful computer on your home network. Looking forward we have plans to replace Windows Media Encoder with an open-source transcoder that will be a) less CPU intensive b) more compatible with an even wider range of codecs.
The project will be open-sourced under the GPL license once Subversion hosting has been provisioned.

Tried all the suggestions in the readme. I'm in no rush until it can do Xvid files.

this runtime does allow other OS than xp to run media center and that works then with the 360?
my problem is that im running a 2003 server as a fileserver and i would like to stream my movies but the media center only supports xp, so does this help me?

how are you guys getting xvid to work? i tried to transcode an xvid file and it just sits there with the arrows going in a circle. also I tried a small divx trailer and it just froze at a black screen at the end. I could get back to the dashboard, but I couldn't do anything in MCE.

buddy i would reinstall the package again it seems you do not have the extention installed. I would exit media center, uninstall the package, reinstall the package restart your media center then restart your 360. Should be all set.

DynaMight,biosehnsucht - you can playback XviD and DivX video using Transcode with the DivX 6.1 and AC3 filter codecs, these are the only ones compatible with Windows Media Encoder currently, so you'd have to uninstall XviD and ffdshow if you've got them currently installed and use the DivX codec. Yeah I know it sucks.
Update: snowcrash8 lists "koepi's 1.2 xvid codec" as working/compatible so you may prefer that to DivX 6.1
IMHERETOSTAY - no need to do port forwarding as its all running on the same machine, more than likely the transcode service is not running - need to check Windows Event logs and the log files for clues.

About snowcrash8's suggestion: "From there select the 'Log On' tab and select 'Local system account'. apply changes and start the service." The only limitation with this is that you'll not be able to playback files stored on a network share on another computer using 'local system' credentials, other than that it should work fine.
Also thank you for letting us know koepi's 1.2 xvid codec as comptatible, I haven't tried this but I will check it out - I'm not a great fan of the DivX Networks codec myself (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)

Value Name: ConnectionTimeout
Data Type: REG_SZ (String Value)
Value Data: 40 (default in seconds)
That is the registry key you can modify to adjust the ConnectionTimeout on your Media Center PC.
Probably need to make that a little clearer.

Ahh depends on what order they were installed. DivX 6.1 may be overriding the other. If thats the case it shouldn't be taken to mean that xvid 1.2 works. Easiest way to find out is to uninstall DivX 6.1
Guys, also remember DivX 6.1 has the crappy systray icon that needs removing otherwise it'll botch the Windows Media Encoder up. See the manual for more info.

Naturally, i cant play videos on the xbox, although I can play them very well in the media center. Also, the video is not used by any other programs or processes(sp?) that I know.

OK, I've solved the problem, and IT IS codec related.
Koepi's codec DOES NOT work, only DivX 6.1 works (following the tray icon removal instructions).
My main problem is now how to get the subtitles (SRT format) displayed, as I was using ffdshow and VobSub is not working.

ok to install that codec you have to extract the three files to your desktop then right click the .inf file and click install. After that your all set.

Let me say what i have done.
I just set this up from scratch.
Install full windows mce
install all updates
install all updates again
installed divx from divx.com
installed the codecs i posted before xvid ac3 etc...
launch media center
connect xbox with software
install the new package released transcode 360
done deal everything works perfect.

unfortunately you have to use .avi .mpeg .mpg video files to actually convert. As of now there is no support for .iso .bin .cue .rar or .ts files.

I have been going through some of your package files, (hope you dont mind) I was just wondering I noticed you have set some variables for resolution and bitrates inside of some of your config files. Have you tweaked these to what is working? or can i crank these baby's up and get some better video quality?
Love to know how/what you have done with the video variables and if we can tweak them a little.
When do the 4/3 and 16/9 prx's come into place? What calls them?

Thanks for the tip. I finally get it to transcode now BUT it's still not working (IMG:style_emoticons/default/mad.gif) . I keep gettign a timeout and i haveit set at 4 mins. BTW RUNTIME thanks for the tip on the regedit.
Any suggestions as to hwo to get aroudn this guy?

YES! You do need to put in a username and password. This is the username and password you use on your MCE computer. If you logon your your windows mce computer with username: fred password: fred then when you install the transcode 360 package you need to put in username: fred password: fred
If you do not do this IT WILL NOT WORK.

had to download windows media encoder 9, installed it and the transcode. had to go into services and edit the login from "this account" to "local system account", change the time out from 40 to 120. now when I transcode it from the 360 I get so sort of file splitting error on my pc. about 10 seconds after I hit OK on the error message the video starts to play on my 360. oh well as long as it works!
I wasn't sure it would work well on my system since its only a 2.2 P4 W/out HT and 768MB ram but it works really well.
This is nice but I think I will still use XBMC to stream all of my videos except my DVR-MS files which my 360 will handle.
Edit: Why is it that this program only takes up 10,000K of memory usage when idle and after I shut down my 360 it is still using 80,000. I would like to leave it on all the time but if its not going to free up the memory once its done I will have to kill the process

Mine worked first shot, probably cause I was already prepped from the previos Encode solution, had DivX 6.1, had the systray removal tweak done.
For everyone worried about setting, I've cranked mine up and it's working great. I set min res for downsample to 720p(921600) so it will only use the main PrX file, then I set that to 8000kbps which is nice and high.
My A64 is running ~50-60%. ~20second load time on 90minute(720mb) xVid movie.

Why would you need this for .ts? The 360 will stream and play .ts files just fine as long as you have HDTVPump installed on your PC.
Has anyone tried Runtime's prog with Xvid HD movies?

I'm playing xvid on mine. To get it to work, I first installed divx 6.1 and then xvid 1.2. after that, it worked no problem. hope this helps.

that's exactly what i did and i still cant get it to work :S I even tried playing sample vids and still gettignthe same problem.
So is it fare to say that it's strictly a codec issue now and that everything else seems in order?

I was able to get Divx files to play, but was having no luck with the XVID avi format. What ended up working for me was to uninstall all codecs, reinstall AC3, reinstall Divx 6.1, and then disable the Divx toolbar via the transcode 360 help file. I now can run both Divx and XVID with no problems.

And do not forget the possibility of streaming *with* subtitles... that's currently possible using fddshow, but WME only seems to like DivX 6.1 when used from the trancoding service. I dn't understand why, because WME is happy with fddshow when streaming manually.

so i installed the program, provided the name and password. when it asked about the incoming and outgoing ports i was unsure as of how to find out that information that it is asking for. would that be something I would need to go into the router to see, see it somewhere in windows itself, etc? anyway like i said i left those alone and went on through with the install. installed the divx 6.1 (used the taskbar tweek too), the ac3, did not install the xvid codec that has been talked about. the 'more' option does come up in MCExtender. so when i hit transcode it does nothing and times out. i set my 'time out' to 120. now the videos im trying to watch are on a different computer than the one with MediaCenter. Does that matter? also this is probably a dumb question but do you have to run Windows Media Encoder on your PC as in open the program or does it just run in the background when you tell the Extender to transcode? Do you have to install Windows Media Encoder on the machine with the video files or just the machine with Windows MediaCenter operating system? lastly in my log file found in Program Files\Transcode 360 it doesnt give any errors. it just says the name of the file and such at the time that i tell it to start but it doesn't list any errors afterwards. if i tell it to try to encode again, it again lists the time i told it to start and that the command has been recieved but kicks back no errors. i know that is a ridiculusly long post but i just cant figure it out. in other words HELLLLP ! lol thanks to all in advance

You say you did EVERYTHING talked about, obviously not. It makes me wonder what else you 'didn't do'
Follow the advice given in here and the install instructions and hopefully you will getit working.

Also, what codec was the file you are trying to transcode, coded in? If you understand what I mean?

i can only get my xvid/divx files to run on the same machine as media center and they seem to need to be in the shared directory. not had much time to play yet but if i add a directory on another hdd it does not show up on the 360.
apart from that everything works a treat.

Secondly, thought I'd post my finding with getting it to work successfully, hopefully it might help some others out. Originally, I was running the latest (stable) version of XviD, DivX videos were streaming fine, XviD ones just got stuck on the encode screen. Uninstalled that and tried the latest version (beta, v1.2) and this didn't work either. Uninstalled that as well and I'm now using the latest DivX release and now everything is working flawlessly.

if i set up a local folder for the 360 to see, it sees it, it also sees folders on other computers as well, with thumbnails for every video file.

i guess i failed to mention in my originial post that i did try a file locally (fresh prince!lol) and still did the same thing, timed out and gave me no type of error in the log file located in Program Files/Transcode 360

I think thats my problem the hdd with my video collection on was formatted when i had xp sp1 installed.
there is nothing in my logs directory because nothing has failed
I can add the video directory in mce on the p.c it's just not shown on the 360.

fuk, it if yer having probs uninstall all yer codecs THE LOT. Reboot install Divx only and ac3 only then turn off the taskbar divx icon as described in the transcode help file reboot again and it works for all file types just not in 5.1 :-(

Almost 90% of the problems reported are due to codec issues. At least another 5% is people not providing a valid Windows login/password when asked during installation.
Whenever you see a COMException - thats Windows Media Encoder going -"oh crap an incompatible codec"
Personally I'm not convinced the XviD codec makes any difference, its more likely to confuse you or cause a problem.
Remember on its own, the DivX 6.1 codec will decode both XviD and DivX (just make sure when you install DivX 6.1 that you 1. enable generic MPEG4 playback 2. disable the DivX toolbar as explained in the manual.
Probably I'll write a little utility or improve the installer, to make sure you have the right codecs installed.
Also remember if you have codec A and B installed it is possible for one to override the other, so my advice is get rid of redundant codecs, uninstall XviD, and ffdShow, and start with as clean as system as you can - installing DivX 6.11 (and possibly AC3 Filter) on its own first.

EDIT: Ok, figured it out, it was the other port that needed changed. I made it 1501 instead of 1401 and all is fine. Although, I did notice that Transcode360.exe doesn't release the RAM after a file is stopped. It stays at around 80MB, then when another file is loaded, adds to it another 70MB, and so on. Anything that can be done about this? I know restarting the transcode service cleans that up, maybe a way to automatically unload and refresh when a file is done?

The only other question I have is that if I don't use a password with MCE do I have to create one in order for this program to work. I have read the troubleshooting and the blog, and it says you have to enter a password and username. In the install I didn't enter one but then changed it to use local system account in the options. internetuser/garny: run through the install when it won't verify your credentials, start up a dos box, change directory to c:\program files\transcode360 and type/execute this:

It should display some stuff on-screen just copy and paste it for me to read. thanks
in the next build i will make T360 default to local system so you won't need to worry about credentials unless you are accessing media stored on another PC.
tnalder: useful log, i'll do some more testing, by the looks of it you are playing one movie and then starting transcoding of another, instead of first stopping and playing another - only explanation i could thinking of looking at the times next to each of the events in the log. its a small time frame involved so its possible T360 is getting confused. stopping playback first before trying another file may be a short term work around

The computer on the network is XP Professional running the 360T service. I installed everything neccessary. The distributed computer doesnt need to be a mce2005 computer right?
Edit; it seems to be working. tried to open a video from the computer the distributed transcode was set to. however, it has had the "working" circle up for about 5 minutes despite the 120 connection timeout setting.

I am having problems with viewing the movies on the XBox 360...they are ok if I watch them with the Media Centre GUI on the PC.
Whenever I try to view on the XBox 360 I get the error "Cannot play video. The file type is not recoginized and cannot be played etc.....
I have done the following...
removed DIVX and XVID codec
removed Transcoder
Reinstalled DIVX codec
Reinstalled Transcoder
I am still not having luck!..........the account I used during install does exsit and has access to the shared drives.
Any ideas?

Is there any quality loss whatso ever when using transcode360 for playback of xvid files? (Cause to my knowledge you convert the files to a differant format on the fly, right?)
Im currently using a new version of xbmc to stream my xvid files from my pc in 1080i to my plasma tv wich im very much happy with, but id like to hook up my x360 instead, and since i only have one component-in on my tv i can only use one of the boxes in 1080i. So do you think the transcode360 will give just as good quality as xbmc does now?
And btw, great work runtime, hugs and kisses from me. Kudos for your work on xbmc/xbmp aswell, i use it almost every day (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

internetuser - now run the same command with the -u switch to uninstall, then re-install with the installer one final time. everything should be good. if not, there are probs with the credentials you're entering, they need to be for an existing Windows account on the system. if you still can't get anywhere try using a blank password to get through the install, then setting the service to use the "local system" account. if that doesn't work and you're happy for me to vnc into your box i can check it out under your supervison just pm me and we can arrange time this weekend.
halfsane - need to look at the log file to find out why.
gunrunner - over network T360 hasn't enough got permission to read the file. try stopping the service and running it in console diags mode, it will run with same priveledges as the logged in user. but... the main prob you have, is not being able to get WME to work on your local system due to a conflict/wrong codecs.
plenty of tips here on this thread about what to do, don't forget to disable the divx tool bar.
Baz999 - you need to highlight the file - press the info button on your remote, or the blue x button on your gamepad, then choose 'More', then transcode. oh and forget to disable the divx tool bar beforehand.
dragonman0 - i haven't yet gotten around to playing with subtitles but if you make any discoveries let us know (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)
[email protected] - yes there will be marginal quality loss but for the most part the results are pretty good (good enough that you won't be upset) as those who have got it working will tell you (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) just up the bitrate and you'll get an even more faithful reproduction - that said, there are limits to what your pc can handle (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)

i have divx 6.1.1 installed and the ac3 codec so i have the right codecs i have the toolbar thing disabled. i'll try running it in diagnostic mode or what not and see if that works, if that dont do it i guess it just isnt for me. thanks for trying to help though.

what is the value for 1080I? How are you calculating this value? Figured it out.... it's actually the first number times the second number... it would be 2073600
going to try both settings right now and see if i notice an improvement. Changing the bitrate alone showed NO improvement at all.

buddy try this out... I could not get xvid's to work without a codec... this is what i used... give it a shot install it and restart your xbox and your media center... download it unzip it and right click the inf and click install. Tell me what happens and post a log.

actually this is the best thing that could have happened.... i loaded azureus on restart and realized that was the reason nothing was working. I was getting strange errors because azureus was using the ports needed to stream. If you are trying to get things running remember to quit all applications and make sure you are not using ports 8080. Upped the resolution to the 1080 setting again and im much much happier quality is FANTASTIC now. Upping the bitrate again and i will update....

By the way i just finished experimenting with the resolutions including 1080i (2073600) and didn't notice a difference. How about you, you notice any difference?Also, as fas as bitrates go. It didnt do anything for me either. I tried a range from 100Kbps to 20 mbps. And to get a true feel of bitrates I used a Divx HD file. My cpu is old (athlon 2100) so I knew it wouldn't be able to play the file smoothly but I was experimenting to see if the smoothness in the playback would improve. Unfortunately, I didnt notice one bit of a difference. It played exactly the same no matter what bitrates I used.

basically there's 3 prx files in the install directory, double click them to edit. 1 is for all video's below a set resolution, the other two are for all videos over that resolution one is for 4x3 vid's, and one is for 16x9.
to set the minimun resolution edit the transcode.config file with notpad and set the 'HiResolutionThreshold' setting to whatever you want. 720p is 720x1280=921600. that will make all video's under 720res use the base prx file (Transcode360.prx)
Then just edit that profile set whatever bitrate you want, make sure the video size is set to 'same as source'

Yes I have read the entire thread. I have also typed in the username and password for the MCE box. The link you gave is to the Xvid 1.1.exe, I can't extract the exe. I've already tested the transcode with the 1.2 xvid codec install but to no avail.

upon reviewing th eonly setting that i think makes a difference AT ALL is the resolution setting in the .config file. I have my tv running 1080 and this setting but i really dont feel like its working right.... Also the quality is better but still no where's near as good as it is on any other method of playback. I even switched my config to quality VBR and wmv9 advanced profile and quality to 100. Really dont think these settings are being applied. Am I doing something wrong? Is there anyway to improve picture quality?

no need to encode the .ts files . simply use a tool called HDTVtoMPEG2 to save the file as with an mpeg extension. it will make the necesary header changes in the process and you can then play the files on your 360. quick and simple.

most people are saying that you must have divx 6.1 installed on your MCE pc to have this transcode program work, well if thats true then something is not right with my installation. See i dont and NEVER will install and divx codec produced by divx networks. I hate them end of story. So i simply downloaded the xvid codec from here http://download.divx...0-30122005.exe installed that and hey presto, bobs your neice, it all worked first time.
Props to a super piece of software and heres hoping things only get better.

Its a great piece of software enabvling you to play DivX and Xvid video however it is not ideal for larger file( ie movie as it takes years to trancode well al least for me
but is azaimg for home movies and smaller files otherwise great software works nicely

Micro, the setting in the config file will do nothing for your image quality, that just determines which PRX setting file you wil use. If you saw a difference when changing the number, it's probably because it switched to one of the other profiles.
Just set the number very high(2500000), and that ensures it will only use the base PRX file, any changes you make to that profile will work.

Well I tried what you said, and waited till one was finished before starting another and it still gave me the time out error. One thing that I noticed was that it works once every time I restart the computer, if i try to transcode a second video file, I get the time out error. Here is another log file and the error that I get. I have yet to read back through the post to see if others have posted similar error messages and solutions.

Why would you need this for .ts? The 360 will stream and play .ts files just fine as long as you have HDTVPump installed on your PC.
Has anyone tried Runtime's prog with Xvid HD movies?

Thought id share my experiences with this Awesome program. Well done!
I run Windows XP on my pc. I have a Virtual PC image of MCE2005. This has the extender software for the 360. My DivX/XviD files are stored on the XP pc and are shared to the MCE image. I also have external HDD's containing .TS HD Movies which i share to the virtual PC.
The TS movies stream sweet by the way
I installed in the following order...
1) Transcode360
2) DivX 6.1
3) AC3
4) DivX Toolbar Remover
I have not messed around with any settings so it is all default install. Once done i can successfully launch MC on the xbox, browse to my DivX/XviD files and transcode. Took me a while to get it working tho but it was down to codec problems. After reading all 7 (now 9+) pages i managed to sort it out.
I even then tried installing the XviD v1.2 codec on top, and it works still (wasnt needed tho)
I do have one problem now tho, no matter what DivX/XviD file i play, every 30 ish seconds i get a 2 second pause. Quite annoying.
I have tried running a movie/tv ep from the local virtual image instead of from a share - still pauses. I tried removing the XviD codec, and using the v1.1 instead - still pauses. The only thing i have yet to try is getting my main XP pc to do the transcoding instead of the virtual MCE pc. Additionally the MCE image is only using 512MB of RAM. I could possibly increase this and see if it makes a difference.
Thought id share my thoughts here and see if you can make any recommendations? Transcoding for me is totally new knowledge (since yesterday!).

If your videos are on the MCE macine, go to the transcoder service: cntrl panel ---> Admin Tools --> Services --> Trancoding an Bro..
Go to properties for this service --> log on --> and select local service (and check the box below)
this way you dont have to care about passwords etc.
Remember to start or restart the service. (this service must be started for transcode360 to work)

Might need to update your version of Windows Media Player (I have v.10 installed)
[-TpS-] - You're seeing two issues: 1. the main issue - the codec you're using isn't fully compatible so it starts/stops transcoding almost immediately 2. a bug in T360 where it doesn't ever timeout if movie start/stop immediately.
repdetect2 - "is there anyway to get 5.1 surround during transcoding?" - not that I know of, MS crippled WME so that it will only broadcast stereo - but I really haven't tried hard enough to give up hope. once i make the install smoother (i.e. perform checks and warn users of incompatible codecs), fix the obvious bugs then I'll move onto improving the featureset.

I'm not a great fan either (my preference would be XviD if it was compatible), but they (DivX) must be doing something right if its compatible with Windows Media Encoder. There are two types of codec 'VCM' and 'DMO'. Most codecs are old-school 'VCM' filter, the newer DirectX Media Object codecs tend to come from MS and therefore compatible with WME. We have plans to construct our own custom filter graphs and such to get around using Windows Media Encoder, or just replace it completely with an existing opensource lib like ffmpeg, or VideoLAN. The problem is that most of these don't speak the language of Windows Media Video 9 which is what the 360 understands.
All - Can anyone else verify if 'http://download.divx....0-30122005.exe' is a suitable replacement for DivX 6.1 ?

Two things. One there is some sort of surround sound going on. On first play I loaded up a hdtv rip of Las Vegas and did hear some sound coming at the right times in my rear speakers. But it wasent right. I went into the audio encoding options and yes 5.1 is available. I changed it to a low version of 5.1 and loaded up the same video and a copy of Rome (hbo special) with 5.1 encoding. Both files sound FANTASTIC. They still sound great even without that option on. The one thing I would not complain about is the sound.
I do have a DD decoder and it's all setup amazing. Games and dvd's really do shine on the 360 with a great surround sound setup.
Video quality on the other hand im still waiting to see if anyone has made some grounds.....
How could MS (the company i love oh so much (seriously)) not included the support for this. Why are we struggling to hard to get something thats perfect when they could just EASILY release support for this WIDELY known and used codec. Common even games are using these technologies now. Oh well.....

then there came this screen and it said like : cannot start service from the command line or a debugger. A windows service must first be installed ( using installutil.exe ) and then started with the serverexplorer, windows services administrative tool or the NET START command.

Well, WME opens and plays a video using ffdshow when ffdshow is the only decoder installed, that's for sure (last SSE2 version, february 02), but actually I can not tell if it's capable of executing the transcoding (anyone can confirm or deny that?)
Another thing I've seen is that, when you install ffdshow *and* DivX, WME defaults always to DivX, so no matter the configuration of ffdshow, WME won't use it.
This is the same behaviour of the transcoding service, as it always chooses DivX over other decoders, as XviD or ffdshow (and this is why some people are reporting that XviD works, when by itself, it does not). The fact is, as far I can tell from my tests, that while WME can *open* the videos using any decoder that works within Windows Media Player, it does not when using it through the Trancode360 service.

T360 can open the file, but you see WME barf when it PreparesToEncode. Also bear in mind T360 is running as a service, with different permissions (if you used a "local system" account) than the logged in user, so its possible some codecs don't like that environment. So when running compat. tests try the console diags mode which runs as an app instead of a service.
There are so many PC configurations out there that its impossible to say anything with a great deal of certainty without going through weeks of testing. I tested T360 for two weeks before releasing, and agreed I didn't dabble around with codecs v. much, but my experience was whenever I deviated from DivX 6.1 (minus toolbar) there was trouble. Also look at the /mceDivX360 project - the author comes to the same conclusions.
Theres definately more work to be done in this area, but I do know for a fact that I had to disable ffdshows mp3 support when I had both DivX and ffdshow on my PC; so be aware that it might not always be the video codec thats the problem.
I would recommend that people always start with the simplest config we've been pushing (DivX 6.1 minus toolbar) and then once they're happy start experimenting.
That said I'm looking forward to reading more of peoples findings because it'd be great to find out others that work, if not to get to the heart of the codec compatibility question.

I tried it for the first time last night and it is working great. I had an issue with the first file I chose where it got stuck on the transcoding screen but there may just be an issue with the way the file was originally encoded.
Anyways, the app works great for me so far. I have my DIVX files on a seperate networked media server where MCE looks to to grab it's shares and the transcode process is working great. It takes the 360 about 30seconds to a minute for it to start the transcoded video but once it's playing there has not been a hiccup yet.
I'll play with the app some more and hopefully be able to provide some better feedback but right now, everything has worked for me right out of the box without me having to change anything on my system.

Didn't really notice a quality drop, other than in a couple of places where some artifacts cropped up - certainly nothing major.
I did notice something odd happen after I resumed a video that had been on pause for a minute, it felt like it skipped ahead by a minute or so. Could have been a fault in the original file though, but might be something to keep an eye out for.
I might, just might, retire my XBMC equipped Xbox now. Maybe.

Ok thanx Micro, i guess i'll try uninstalling & reinstalling. So what exactly did you change in the prx file? Currently are you changing the video size, vid bit etc? And are you just changing the main prx? Or are you just changing the resolution in the config? Thanks again

I use a linux machine to store all my media so i map a drive to point to the linux server from my mce.
when i try to run media over the network it fails with:
Requested file does not exist: Z:\movies\Action\Saints.And.Soldiers.2003.avi
The file clearly exists as i can select it from the extender, it seems to be something to do with the encoding. Any ideas?

In short it looks like many many more codecs will work with T360 besides DivX 6.1 (minus toolbar). My hunch is its all down to the audio codec. Following the techniques I described in my post I'm still unable to prove XviD's official codec works, but as I point out, there are plenty of other codecs that will play XviD files.

ok i checked my logs, and its saying that the files i am tryign to play do not exist, i can paly them on my local machine
the only thing i can think of is that no media is stored on my media center itself, its all through a network.. .it must me causing some conflict with transcode360 program
the network is up and running, i can access everything on every computer... i will fool around a bit i guess and see what i can come up with

Some notes: When it comes to pulling files off a network drive, it is imperative that the T360 service is assigned the login/password of an existing Windows account as the "local system" can't access any resources beyond what drives it formatted or files it created. Ok assuming you have done that then the other thing to take note is the file path.
If the transcoder service gets given a file path that doesn't exist on the local box, it will log an error message (file doesn't exist). Now I'm not sure whether or not mapped drives are allowed within the context of a service. When a service starts executing, it is not part of the shell/Windows GUI so the drive mappings don't exist as far as its concerned. Possible? I'd need to test. You could try stopping the service and running it in console diags mode, then it would be running as any other normal app - if that works you have your answer (although I can think of a couple of work arounds!)
Here is a possible workaround - add the samba/smb/network share to your Media Center: Go to My Videos, bring up the context menu, choose Add Videos, choose Add shared folders from another computer - then select the network share. Now whenever you transcode files from within this folder Transcode 360 will be given \\network_share\file.ext and that is something it can work with (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Firstable, you are right, the sound is part of the problem. Luckily, ffdshow lets you disable its sound decoder engine, and that makes WME processing the image provided by ffdshow without throwing any errors (the sound is processed by Windows itself, no problems with MP3 tracks).
Then, the first problem is sorted out, but ffdshow still does not work with the Transcode360 service. Why? Becasue it's not triggered. When you play a video through an open application, such as WMP or WME, ffdshow appears and takes the control. But the transcoding service does not trigger ffdshow.
The workarround is *disabling* the service and running Transcode360 through the diagnostics console.
So, in a nutshell, if you want to use ffdshow to transcode video with Transcode360, then you must:
1) Disable the ffdshow audio decoder
2) Disable the Transcode360 service
3) Run the Transcode360 diagnostics console
Works every time. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/cool.gif)

Seriously its running as a service with no special tweaks, I'm using the same build as you - the one thing that differs between console and service, is that with console mode it is running with *your* permissions - if you run the service with a "local service" account then its not. Just finished watching a TV epsiode successfully (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Update: I thought I should add, I'm using T360 in distributed mode:

As for the distributed mode, I'm runnig T360 in a single system (directly from MCE to X360), so that's not an issue and arguably it's not related to the ffdshow behaviour.
Oh, and no need to disable the tray icon, it works anyway.
Update: No need to disable completely ffdshow's audio decoder! Just configure it to not being used by Transcode360.exe (look in the information tab, and activate the "Don't use ffdshow in" option).

to be honest the only setting that i would change which does give noticable improvment is changing your resolution as described before if you have an hdtv. 1080 does look pretty darn good.

Installed and working fine apart from one small issue I hope someone can help me with:
I had to change the AC3filter preset to 'loud' to get decent volume when playing back AC3 avi files with windows media player and media center. However when I use the transcode playback method, even directly on the media center PC I get the low volume issue again.
Any ideas?

fantastic thread. ive been keeping an eye for all 12 pages now (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)
I have two questions if i may.
1) what is this ffdshow, im a total noob to encoding etc and have no idea what this is. i understand from reading the posts its a good thing, better to use it than the divX codec. Can someone explain this for me? Am i right in saying the ffdshow works as a replacement for the divx codec and should be used only when running T360 from the diag console?
2) i have the problem were my movies are on a network share coupled with the need to offload the transcoding to another pc. my MCE2005 pc is a virtual image on my XP Pro machine. because of this it can not handle the transcoding itself. the movies stutter every 30 settings on default quality. So i have setup the T360 to work on the XP Pro machine. This works perfectly ONLY when i am either using a \\ share (which i find are not always viewable on the 360), or a location equally matched on both machines.
For example, on the virtual pc, if i have a movie on the C drive, then access this on the 360, the transcode will fail on a queue error if the file does not exist on the xp pro machine. this makes sense to me as the work is being offloaded to the xp pro machine. so if i put the file on the c drive of the xp pro machine, it works no problem.
However if i have shares on the virtual pc named x:\ which is directly into the movies folder. The only way i can recreate this on the xp pro machine is to share its own share to itself as drive x:\. confused? i am!!! =] Then the path of x:\ is on both the MCE virtual pc and xp pro machines. However trying to transcode the file here still gives the queue error. the logs show the file does not exist. But the path is x:\24 - 501.avi. and this file IS available on both machines on x:\
Reading the previous posts i see mention of network shares not working unless it is in diag mode. Is this the case for me?
I dont know if anyone else has such a messed up setup as me, but i cant avoid it. My setup is...
PC - XP Pro - video on f:\ - with T360 ---- video share x:\ ---> Virtual PC of MCE2005 - running T360 ---> Xbox 360
All my machines login as the same user (unit stark), and all have the same password. T360 on the MCE2005 is running the workgroup login of unit stark, and T360 on the xp pro machine is running as a local system login.

The host has a couple of shared folders where I put all the multimedia contents, and as MCE is configured in the same workgroup, it can work with those network resources without hassle. So, if your MCE system can access to those shared folders, Xbox should access to them as well.

You need to make sure PC2 has .NET Framework 1.1 installed (google for the redist from MS). Run the T360 installer. BTW, when you change the PRX file, in order for the changes to take effect you have to restart the service.

no worries (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) essentially my problem is i if i get a pc to do the transcoding which is not the MCE virtual machine i am forced to either do \\ shares, or make sure my shares are actually on the same drive as the mapped one. So if i have my files actually on my F drive. And share the folder to the MCE as F. They work fine when transcoded. If they are mapped to any other drive than F, it will complain they dont exist.
i find that the \\ shares even tho are accessible by the MCE vpc, are not always seen by the 360. somethimes on the MCE vpc it cant actually view the workgroup, but if i was to type in \\stark\ i would see them all no problem.
whats this about the console in diag mode tho?
Also, do you find your MCE virtual PC also cant handle the transcoding? - movies stuttering every now and then?

As for the transcoding, it seems that the virtual machine handles the process quite well (720p, 8000kbps), but I can't say it for sure without farther testing.

I have a X2 4400 AMD - 2GB OCZ Ram - 7800 GTX Nvidia. I have tried allocating 512 and even 1024 RAM to the vpc but it still stutters on streaming. Every 30s on default settings. If i up to 720p and 8000kbps its even more frequent.
The main pc can handle it easily. The vpc cant (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)

I made a mistake early on and tried adding mine from media center on the pc thinking the 360 would auto pick them up it did not, unless they were in the local shared directories. since adding them from the mce on the 360 everything shows up.
also i had slight stuttering/pixelation until i swapped from divx 6.1 to ffdshow now i have none, i'm only on crap specs 2.8 barton with 1 gig of ram. everything is running sweet as a nut. soz gloating lol
hope you get it sorted soon.

The main PC is an Athlon [email protected] with 1GB RAM and an ATI X800 video card. The VPC is only 512MB RAM. And as far as I can tell, it does not stutters on streaming.
BUT...
I've noted a very strange issue, related to the keyframes of the transcoding profile. The keyframe interval of the normal profile is set to 4 seconds, right? So, the very first time I play a video within Media Center on Xbox, it skips the firts 4 seconds!!! Yes, it jumps to the firts keyframe. Stoping the video and playing it again, the problem is no more. I can start video after video... no skipping. But if I exit MC (return to the dashboard) and enter again, the first video displayed gets its first 4 seconds skipping.
A workaround is, obviously, setting the keyframe interval to 1 second (it then skips only the first second of the video), but it's a mistery to me the reason of suach a strange behaviour.

Got a couple of (probably) stupid questions.
First one is that ffdshow wont install on my system for me, it stops when trying to register ffdshow.ax or something. Its not a huge problem as I resorted to Divx6.1 for now but anyone else have this?
Also been watching a few xvid movies and they all have really quiet sound now to the point I have to turn my Amp almost all the way up to remedy this. Is this avoided as easily as going into the AC3 Filter config and modifying the db settings?

Okay, the lost frames seem to be related to file size. The bigger the file, the more frames are dropped. In addition, I'm getting some pretty terrible artifacting on some videos. Do you think this could be related to the codecs that are installed on the server?

For some reason i am still looking into, my MCE-VPC is not able to access the workgroup under its login unless i first login as the administrator, and then my unit stark account. The unit stark acc is of course an admin anyway, and has been the main account for installing everything!
If i try to access the WG straight from the unit stark account i get a permission denied message. The thing i dont get it is can see the shares from \\stark regardless of the WG access denial.
Anyway my problem seems to be that i can not access the workgroup on the MCE-VPC.
Any ideas?

I've trawled my way through this thread but still haven't been able to get this working for me. I think it's a codec issue as I get this error:
*ERR* Windows Media Encoder threw an exception: System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException (0x80004005): WMEncoder.PrepareToEncode() failed. at Transcode360.MceServer.StreamFile()
I have cleaned out my codecs and installed ONLY divx6.11 and AC3Filter, but there may have been something I've missed.
Here are my audio codecs and video codecs as reported by GSpot.
I have tried to stream both DivX 5 and Xvid with AC3 and MP3 audio to no avail.
If anyone can shed any light on this I'd be grateful ... looking forward to being able to use my 360 to stream these files properly (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif).

I have tried ffdshow - divx 6.1 - and a "Cole2k" media pack which claims it would work with mpeg-4 on Media Center. For now i am just looking to get these videos to show up in MCE and I will worry about streaming them later....

Any suggestions for the .mp4's? My next attempt will be to switch to a constant bitrate and see what happens.

right click on my computer and go to "manage". Go into the services and look for the transacode service. Right click on it and go to properties. Inside here, under the logon tab, you can change the credentials it uses. in the event you have no user account/password made under your users in xp, change it to use the local system administrator account and see if that works

i finally got my workgroup sorted. had to do some searching as to why my machines would not see the workgroup despite seeing the shares within it. If anyone is interested this is what i had to do...
1. Open Network Connections.
2. In Local Area Network, Right click on top of your connection and select Properties, click Install.
3. In Select Network Component Type, click Protocol, and then click Add.
4. Click NWLink IPX/SPX/NetBIOS Compatible Transport Protocol, click OK, and then click Close.
5. In Network Connections, on the Advanced menu (on top menu bar), click Advanced Settings.
6. On the Adapters and Bindings tab, under Connections, click the local area connection on which you are enabling IPX/SPX file and print sharing.
7.Under Bindings for Local Area Connection, under File and Printer Sharing for MS Networks, clear the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) check box, and then click OK.
Once done my computers can now see every machine in the workgroup first time. streaming is no longer a problem. will focus on quality now =]

I do however have another few of my own
1) If i am delegating the T360 encoding to another PC. What PC is it vital to have the codecs for? Does the FFDSHOW, etc have to be on both the delegate and the MCE-VPC? I am having a weird issue on my delegate PC now that only the FFDSHOW codec is present. Since uninstalling the others (some K-Lite Codec Pack) some of my tv shows - scrubs season 5 - are causing my pc to hang when i simply click them in explorer. The system process information stats explorer.exe is using 100% CPU usage. I have to end it and re-start explorer.exe. Clicking other TV shows (24, Lost, etc) are fine. Its only when i select a scrubs ep, and not even opening it.
2) What do people recommend for best picture and sound settings? Currently i have set the T360 config to use 1080, and the main prx file to use 8000 for video. Sound ive left to the codecs.
Any pointers on either the above would be much appreciated. Ta, D.

But when I view the movies and then hit "info" and then select "transcode" nothing happens. It makes the sound to acknowedge I selected it but nothing happens. I let it sit for awhile after and still nothing. I did not notice any increase in demand on my system either. What can I do to try and fix this?

I have 2 Xbox 360's, no problem, got both connected and both stream divx/xvid fine. BUT 1 of them is hooked to a HDTV and the other isn't. Is there any way to mess with the config files like I have seen people talk about to get better quality etc so that it only affects the HDTV system, and not the standard? Is there a client setup like that maybe? Or will this get into the whole offloading the transcoding to another system for each one. That is feasible for me, but just trying to find the best scenario. Looking forward to the setup info on that.
Next question, applies to networking. I have seen some discussion and networking overall isn't an issue, BUT my file servers have multiple shares and I personally only prefer to have the 360's see certain directories. I have yet to figure out a way to make this happen. When I click on Add Videos--Add Folders--Add shared folders from another computer, and then select the Server I want, it doesn't give me any choice to select a folder from within. As where on the MCE server, I can MAP a network drive and then add folders on this computer option and select that drive and uncheck what I don't want. But is there anyway to do this on the Xbox 360? For whatever reason the mapped drives on the MCE server don't show up on the 360 Extender. Am I doing something wrong or is there another way to do this.
I truly appreciate the efforts on this project, I look very forward to possibly seeing some incorporation with the Movies Plugin, it looks pretty slick from what I have seen and been told. I have tons of movies and sometimes you just wanna know what the movie is about before ya watch it!
I hate that we have to use Windows Media Center Edition to do this, I am more a Linux guy and try to stray away from any windows if I can! But I do want my 360 to be used to the tilt! So I give in occasionally! Thanks again for your support and looking forward to the next release.

I really want to stream HD Xvids (1280x720), but my PC can't even run them beyond like 1 fps (it's an Athlon 2600). I have another PC (P4 3.2) I can offload some of the transcoding to. I want to keep at 1280x720 and at a very high bitrate so that there is no noticeable quality loss in HD media.
I've been streaming untouched .ts files without transcoding, which of course look amazing, but I'd certainly prefer media that doesn't take up 12gb per movie.

I had to pretty much strip down to nothing running on both the actual OS and the vmware OS including disabling any realtime virus protection. I also had to select 2 virtual processors instead of one. The processor is constantly in the mid 90s on % of use, but it streams it no problem. PC specs are p4 2.6 HT 800fsb w/ 1gb ram. The only thing I run into is, at the end of a movie (or if I want to change movies midstream,) I need to jump out of the current transcode session (cant choose to continue transcoding with NEW movie.) If I don't, then it starts to drop frames. Not that big of a deal for me as I rarely watch movies back to back.

On your host MCE machine, right click "My Computer", select manage. Then select local users and groups. double click the MCX1 user or whatever number it may be(depends on how many MCE's you've associated with this MCPC). Click the Profile tab. In the box that says logon script, put in let's say "map.bat" with no quotes.
Now, make a folder in the root of C: called "netlogon" no quotes... right click this folder and select sharing and security and make sure this folder is shared with the default permissions, etc.. i.e. don't change anything.
Next, in this folder create a new text document. Rename this document "map.bat"
In this document type the following lines as they apply to your network. For example. mine reads like this:

NET USE X: "\\GENESIS\megadrive" mypassword /USER:CINET\Vexamus
Where X will be the drive letter mapped, the share is in quotes. It's Important to note NOT to put the trailing \ at the end of the share name.
Also, password comes BEFORE the "USER" switch. If your shared drive is on a computer that's on a domain or on a different workgroup than your MCE machine, then you have to include the domain/workgroup in the username area. So "CINET" is my domain, and "Vexamus" is the user. Remember, it's a backslash and not a forward slash.
Do this for as many shares as you'd like to have added.
Save the file and restart your MCE machine and then start Media Center on your 360. Add folders to whatever, you will see the mapped drives under folders on local machines, but now you'll also see network shares for the machine you setup the net use commands for. If you're on a domain and you use domain admin credentials you'll be able to see every share on the entire domain.

Like Runtime said, M$ crippled WME by not allowing it to broadcast Windows Media Audio Professional 9.1 multichannel encoding. This is quite gay on their part and thusly, until we get an open source replacement for WME, we're stuck with stereo. The best thing you can do is setup AC3 filter for Dolby Pro Logic II encoding. this will export only 2 channels but the LFE, center, and rear will be premuxed and then you just set up your reciever for DPL2 and you'll have nearly the same effect as Dolby Digital 5.1

Nice one buddy. I might give that a go myself - stripping down to nothing running. Only snag i might have tho is the processor thing. I run the image via MS Virtual PC 2004. Im not aware of a processor option like you mention in vmware. Do you know if there is one?
It works tho anyway, although i would rather let the VPC do everything itself.
Thanks for the heads up on transcode changes. Is hitting the "stop" button and then "back" to return to the movies list sufficient? I take it you mean dont ever leave it playing in the small view (bottom left) mode?

I was having the same problem. Make sure you have a password set for your windows login. Then when you install the program again it should ask you for a username and password, just use your windows login info.

I am running MCE 2005 in VMware on a 2500+ with (128mb of ram in the image) and it is not choppy at all. I am sitting at ~90% CPU. I am using the default encoding options the only thing I changed to remove the choppyness was to remove all codecs and leave only AC3 and ffdshow. Removing DivX seemed to fix the problem. Worked for me anyway.

Just uninstall DivX 6.1. ffdshow registers itself to manage most of the codecs you may need, but if you have DivX 6.1, WME is going to try to use it instead of ffdshow... so, unistall DivX.
Just writing again to let you know my progress... and yet some problems.
I'm runnig Windows MCE in a virtual PC bridged to my network.
The high resolution threshold is set to 921600 (720p?), and the normal profile to 30 fps, 8000K, 2 seconds keyframe interval, 5 seconds buffer, and 160kbps/44kHz stereo.
With that setting, all is perfect. Great image quality and no stuttering at all.
But still I'm missing the first few seconds of the transcoded video and the last, say, 30 seconds, when image just freezes... maybe there's a way to setup some kind of buffer to correct this annoying problem. It's just me, or it's a general issue?

but i have another problem. i can get my xvid files to work that have AC3 codec.
i have installed the codec. but it refuses to work with t360.

Also, maybe related, but before T360 came out, I use to convert the xvid files to wmv and also the audio starts to lag the video in the converted wmv after around the first 20 minutes (so I hear the audio before I see people moving their lips). So anyone know what I can do to fix both/either of the problems (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) ?

I am running a considerably more spec'd system and it still stutters lol. It must be the accumulative of programs running on my main pc that is causing the VPC to stutter so. Will give it a tweak sometime and report my progress (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Default Media Encoder down samples the 5.1 sound to 2 channel stereo. With the AC3 codec installed it should be possible to maintain the 5.1 channels.
What you can do is the following:
Open up Windows Control Panel and select AC3Filter applet. In the "Output" Speakers, choose "3/2+SW 5.1
channels".
Maybe this will solve your problem but i think you need to change some other settings that are maybe available in a future release of Transcode. Or maybe you can change the config file of Transcode...

it's been a good 6 months since I was last here, glad I came back, cause the lack of streaming to my 360 was really getting to me.
But it keeps timing out.
I've changed the time to 120 and will try again with it set to 6000 or something crazy. I have deleted all my codecs then installed the once linked to on the first page on here but it still doesnt help.
what else can i do?

I had huge problems, at least I though so.
Well, I finally realized I had to actually create a password for my username on my XP-user account.
Blank pass = no work for Transcode...and I use FFDSHOW ( need subs ), so local didn't do the trick.
So, after that minor idiotic tweak from my side, now all works well.
Subtitles, XviD, DivX ( all via FFDSHOW )...
So thank you RUNTiME.

This is the problem I see in your log, but I don't know why the stream gets closed before the transconding begins. If I where you, I'd try Windows Media Encoder functionality. I you can get it work as a stand alone application, then you are on the right path.

What codecs have you installed? For the sake of debugging, try uninstalling all codecs except for DivX 6.1 and AC3 filter.

I'm having this same problem. Installed it on Win XP Pro x64, had to use the installutil.exe workaround but now it automatically stops the service when I start it.
Provided I can get as far as to get the service started, I'm wonder what the best way to set this up is. I have Windows MCE 2k5 running on my laptop. My video files are stored on my XP x64 box, which are shared with the laptop. I can transcode well enough with this setup, but I'd rather offload the work to my desktop, as the laptop doesn't have very good cooling. I'm guessing if I use the registry setting it will simply stream data from the desktop to the laptop, then realize it needs to offload the work, and stream it right back to the desktop. Is it possible to keep the data on my desktop until it's all transcoded, and then go from there? Otherwise it seems like the network transfers could quickly get bogged down.

I uninstalled all codecs, installed Windows Media Encoder, then the SDK, then FFDshow, and finally transcode, but it always gives me that error. Hope you guys can help me because i'm out of ideas!
(Although i must mention i somehow never got to get the encoder working for a broadcast across my network or even trying to connect to the streaming port on the computer that's actually broadcasting... could it be a problem with the actual media encoder not serving the files?)

I did some further testing, and if I don't have any valid video codecs installed (ie my PC can't play xvid), the transcode360 only does a timeout. I tried re-registering the nerovideo codec, and it pops up that message. I unregistered it, installed Koepi's xvid 1.2 as said on 1st page, and it popped up the same message again!
I'm desasperely desperate.... Please help me!

I can now connect to the stream on port 1401 by using localhost:1401, but even then my windows media player cannot play the stream! What's wrong? is it my windows media video codecs? I just re-installed them just in case without any success!

I have sucessfully played a .wmv file, through Media Center on the 360.
So, this leads me to believe that the issue I was having does NOT have to do with the video card driver errors I was receiving.

Yes, just install it (without the audio decoder, if you want to use it with T360), configure the video decoder, and activate the subtitles function. Is that easy.

I am using the VMware video driver and it goves me the same error. Probably not the problem. Your stream closed before the client connected so try increasing the timout peroid.

Try divx6.1 or ffdshow instead of nerovision.

I am about to give up and admit defeat, i just cant get this thing to work. Here's what I have done, Downloaded T360. Checked what codecs i had running using the G-spot codec utility, Than deleted What i had running with DirectShowFilter manager. I couldnt delete MPEG4 Decoder DMO, I think it comes from MS. I than Downloaded and installed FFDShow Just the codecs. I didnt understand what runtime was using graphedit for, but i tried to play a MPEG 4 video without success, from what i understand this is a good thing. Than i tried playing both DivX and Xvid files on my 360 by pressin the info button on the remote with the video highlighted,
-----> more, --------> Transcode. Than i hear a noise acknowledging my request but nothing happens. No spinning arrow, no timeout notification no nothing. I know i explained this problem before but no one replied, is it because this is a stupid issue that has already been addressed (i have read through thread and i dont think that it has), or is it just no one has an answer? If it has been addressed can some one please point me to the post? Please?!?! I spent a good deal of time just trying to get my hands on a copy of MCE2005, Mostly just for this program, this is really starting to suck

Ok there is a huge bug with Windows Media Encoder and other streaming services. Whereas the program points by default towards "localhost" as the running engine, some computers may have trouble connecting to that adress.
Just try adressing the computer running the service by ip adress, or as in my case, by computer name. By changing localhost to the pc's name, it now totally works with all codecs i had previously installed!
So i don't know what could be done in the nextversion to change that, but i'm sure glad as hell it now works!

Been a bit of a pin to get working for me ... but now that it is I can say Excellent
... works very well indeed (as long as I don't get too ambitious with my ageing Athlon 2600+ ... HD streams appear to be a bit of a no-no ... but will do more work on them later).

Personally, the only thing I feel it's missing is the ability to skip forward/backwards for it to be 100% perfect. Although I imagine as we're dealing with Realtime Streams Froward/Reverse might be impossible.

I have installed WMEncoder codec but someone mentioned the SDK do I need to install this and if so where do I get it from

a- The SDK is not required. The system updates (via Windows Update) are required, specially .NET Framework.
b- You most probably have a codec problem.
c- You can uninstall the codecs using their uninstallers, but in any case, if you install ffdshow (better image post-processing and subtitler included) it's not necessary to uninstall *anything but DivX 6.1*, because it will manage automatically almost all kind of codecs (except for some commercial codecs, as QuickTime or RealMedia). Just remember not to install the audio decoder (the only audio codec you must install is AC3; I'd recommend AC-3 ACM Decompressor, because AC3 Filter was causing problems on my system).
d- If you want to properly test your system, you better try getting Windows Media Encoder work first as a stand alone application. If WME works, then T360 must work too (unless you have a network or a security problem).

re-installed codecs and everything seems fine now. fantastic!!!!! I can live with the 20 second pause as it's better than spending hours converting files to MPEG2/WMV.
BTW should the ff/rew buttons be working?

I uninstalled everything, re-installed everything and chose port 1058 as I found 8080 did not work and yes it now works on my 360 but it is very jerky
I have my network Hardwired and I am running a AMD Duron 1.6 with 512mb of ram
Any ideas how to stop its being jerky as it is un watchable

Should I be able to do this with that processor?
If not, are there some things you can do to reduce CPU load? I would assume that LOWERING the pixel threshhold in the default profile, and making sure the resolution is lower on the next profile, that it would take less CPU?

I have a 2500+ overclocked to around 2800+ speed and it is around 90% fgor stero sound but goes to 99% for 5.1 sound. It should be able to handle it. (barely)

I'm running a virtual machine inside a 64 bits Athlon processor system. The virtual machine has 512 MB RAM and the network is bridged (the virtual PC has it's own IP address). The network is a Wi-fi 802.11b one, and it's capable of streaming conventional TV resolution but not in HD resolution.
So, transcoding with a 720p threshold, and at 7500K/30 fps (using ffdshow with some color and blurring tweaks), the video stream is flawless. If you use the default profiles of T360, is not probable that you experience any jerkiness.
Just some useful advices:
- Keep it simple. At first try with conventional divx/xvid videos (with MP3 audio).
- Do not use AC3 Filter to decode MP3 (which is the default behaviour of AC3 Filter).
- When testing do not use complex ffdshow filtering or high resolution/bitrates (audio or video).
- Check your network speed. Use the Windows Media Center tool and check whether your network can work with HD videos or not.
- Kill any processor/memory consuming, hard disk intensive background task.
- Defrag your hard disk (just in case)...
If you keep the system simple, your network is running well and the video still stutters, then perhaps is time to get a better processor or more/faster memory.

Well, it would be nice if someone that CAN transcode divx w/5.1 without rescaling would post their machine specs. I want to upgrade this box anyway, but it would be nice to confirm how fast a CPU is enough. Was thinking of an X2 4200...

Are you sure? You access the zoom menu by pressing the info button - there is no 'zoom' button on the Xbox remote. I use a MCE remote and the info button works fine.

The only problem I have is that when I go into my videos menu it gives me a list of all my videos but it freezes my xbox. I think it is because it is trying to get a thumbnail from all the movies in there
Is there anyway to set it up so it displays a list instead of thumbnail?

Now I'm struggling with some details :
1. The audio doesn't match the video perfectly, which is the case on the Xbox à nd the MCE machine. I use DivX6.1 with AC3 filter atm.
2. There still seems to be some lag on the stream when it plays on my tv. It can't be my MCE... it runs on a second partition of an AMD FX57 based computer, with high end gfx (7800GTX) and plenty of ram (CPU usage is around 45% when streaming). I first runned MCE2005 on an athlon 1500+ with 768 ram and it runs smooth there too... only the aged cpu isn't able to stream without a huge lag. On my FX57 it's working neat... just a little lag.
Anyone can give me a tip to sort these lasts things out? It's just details, but I want it perfect.

I have not found any solution yet. I am pretty sure my PC is up to spec: Athlon 64 3500+ with 2GB RAM. I am not using transcode 360 for now, as it really annoying to get into a film only for it to freeze after 20mins. Having said that, as soon as a new version comes out i will be trying it again, as i think that app has a lot of good potential, and this is only a beta version.

however I do have one problem....
the movie seems 'zoomed' in somehow. it's like its too big for my tv. I've played the movie on my PC and when I watch on the 360 its like some of the picture is off the screen in all directions (eg the title of the movie reaches the edges of my tv, whereas in media player there is space to each side).
its not a lot, but enough to make it feel a bit claustrophobic if you get my meaning.
is this common? is there a way to fix it?

Ok, got it working by adjusting the timeout to 60. It was probably a bit slow because i'm streaming it wirelessly.
It seems to work without hickups/lag now, the only problem now is that I always miss about 10 seconds at the beginning of the clip. Is there already a solution for that?

This is my first post after installing T360.
Firstly, what a great piece of kit, secondly for those who install it with the DIVX codec read on . . . .
I Initially installed it on my system with the Divx codec, it would play Divx but not Xvid, I found that removing ALL codecs (DIVX /Xvid/AC3) installing FFDSHOW and removing and re-installing T360 did the trick (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)
I can now transcode Xvid, DIVX with no problems at all (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

I have a P4 2.4 Ghz CPU with 2gb RAM and my system transcodes at 98% so I think that your stuttering issue could be due to memory/cpu issues.

I read from runtime's void that Transcode support real media video file as well. Is there a speical setting I need to go through? I have been trying to play my .rm file through transcode and I kept on getting the timeout error. The video plays in MCE; I tried to run it through WME and it works fine. However, I just can't get it to work on my Xbox360
real alternative codec is the one I used as recommanded.

I have all the codecs you recommended installed
No errors
BUT when i`m playing a divx movie, it doesn`t play well
When playing the movie, it is showed like it has to load all the time, like it is stottering
When I open Extender Resource Monitor, this is what I get:
CPU utilization (%) 100 Red
Disk uses (Bps) 540602 Green
Network Uses (Bps) 606187 Red
Memory available (KB) 204606 Green
The problem is obviously in my network
I use a 10/100 Switch from belkin
My Pc : 1.60 Ghz CPU
512 RAM
Can Anyone help me out? Caus it`s frustrating

The streaming won't work on these kind of CPU's. The system is just not good enough. I tried my setup first on an 1600 Athlon and MCE2005 worked great on it, but it could not handle the streaming.
Did the same setup on a second partition of my FX57 and it worx great.
So : you need DECENT HARDWARE to get the stream smooth.

Could have to do with the resolution of the original movie. Higher quality originals will be harder to transcode. (ie. more to transcode per frame) I am having a hard time with my 2500+ overclocked to almost 3200+ and getting nearly 100%. I cannot do 5.1 since that pushes me over the top and it gets choppy. Damn I need an x2.

had to download windows media encoder 9, installed it and the transcode. had to go into services and edit the login from "this account" to "local system account", change the time out from 40 to 120. now when I transcode it from the 360 I get so sort of file splitting error on my pc. about 10 seconds after I hit OK on the error message the video starts to play on my 360. oh well as long as it works!
I wasn't sure it would work well on my system since its only a 2.2 P4 W/out HT and 768MB ram but it works really well.
This is nice but I think I will still use XBMC to stream all of my videos except my DVR-MS files which my 360 will handle.
Edit: Why is it that this program only takes up 10,000K of memory usage when idle and after I shut down my 360 it is still using 80,000. I would like to leave it on all the time but if its not going to free up the memory once its done I will have to kill the process
Where do you change the timeout? Mine keeps on timing out.

Tried mapping the drive but cant see drive in extender (also tried moving the mapping reg keys into the MCX1 user account)
Tried creating a shortcut to the network location in My Videos but get an error opening it (tried turning off all security on share)
Tried adding the share to My Network Places but cant get 360 to see it when going through UI to add videos on network

However, Transcode360 doesn't work yet. I know this is because Transcode360 doesn't see the drive mappings that are created using the above guide.
Transcode360 is running under the MCE PC's local "Administrator" account.
What I have tried:
- creating a logon script for the local administrator account -> doesn't work
- creating persistent drive mappings that are the same as the ones for the MCE user -> doesn't work
- trying to run the transcode360.exe as a normal program instead of a service -> doesn't work
Apparently Windows won't use or create drive mappings for programs that are configured to run as a service with a user account.
A way around this would be to allow the transcode360.exe to run as a normal program so it would "see" the drive mappings. Any chance of a recompile to accomplish this?

Codecs Installed: Divx 6.1.1, Nero Codecs.
Tried this with: Just Divx 6.1.1, Just ffdshow, Just xvid, combination of all three, With and without nero.
Tried to reinstall Transcode 360. The user is administrator of the system, and Transcode was installed with the correct permisions and username/password.
I get the same error when trying to transcode from the Xbox 360 OR the actual PC.
Thats about all I can think to post information about that might have any effect on the program. If anyone has any idea please post something. The error message appears almost instantly once I transcode and there is no output to the Transcode console.

I've been tweaking the WME profiles a bit to get a higher bitrate and resolution and it seems to work well.
I do get very low volume on Xvid movies with AC3 (5.1) sound, but turning up the master volume of AC3 Filter seems to help.
Is there any way to get WME to pass through AC3 sound? Or re-encode it to AC3 again?

Ok, an answer to my own question (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) I've managed to get AC3 sound working too:
1. I've set AC3 Filter (1.01a) to the 3/2+SW 5.1 channels profile
2. To increase the volume I've set the master gain to max. (20) and the voice and surrounds gains to 10
3. I edited the Transcode 360 16x9 profile to use the Windows Media Audio 9.1 Professional codec
4. I set the audio format to 384 kbps, 48 kHz, 5.1 channel 24 bit CBR
I also set the video resolution to 3500K bps (giving a total of 3893 Kbps).
And since I'm using it mostly for US TV-shows, I've set the frame rate to 23.976 fps.
My P4 3.2 HT Ghz that does the transcoding runs at about 60% now (on both logical CPU's).

Well installed the codes suggested on page one of this posting (XVid, DIVX & AC3) then went on to install transcode.
No problems... restarted my PC, went into my living room and turned on the 360. Connected to media center fine then went to "My Videos" - within moments of being in my videos my remote stopped responding. Went back to my PC and it too had hung. After about 2-3 mins of nothing working my PC comes back to life and the xbox says it has lost its connection to the PC.
Anyone else had this problem/know a solution? It almost seems that when trying to create thumbnails for the 360 to display it hangs...

Sometimes waiting an hour will also resolve the problem, but today I haven't streamed anything for a week, and it's not working.
When it gets into this state, when I select the "Transcode" option on the xbox, Media Center creates a new ehExtHost process belonging to my MCX1 user, but the process closes shortly after. The Transcode360 service does not appear to be getting any notifcation that there is work to be done.
It appears to be an issue with the MCE plugin. I don't have any experience developing or debugging MCE apps, so I'm at a bit of a loss for where to search.
Anybody else having this problem?

and I manged to solve the issue, so I thought I'd post my findings here, to help anyone else with the same problem.
I had installed a fresh copy of Windows XP MCE and got my Xbox360 talking to my desktop installation. This was fine until I wanted to stram video. I installed Transcode v1.0 Beta and was ablt to attempt to stream the medie by selecting 'Info' and from there going on to transcode.
First error I got was: "No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it."
Simply finding the service and changing the service logon user to local system account worked. Note: I wasn't able to set the user to the adminstrator for some reason, but the lcoal system account works fine and doesn't seem to throw up any issues. Yet.
Next error I got was the forboding: "Windows Media Encoder was unable to process the selected file". Then wehn looking in the service event logs there was the error:
"Windows Media Encoder threw an exception: System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException (0x80004005): WMEncoder.PrepareToEncode() failed.
at Transcode360.MceServer.StreamFile()"
To cut a long story short I spent hours installing Xvid Codecs (this was a clean machine remember?) and AC3 as they were the codec for the video and audio respsectively. These didn't work and I found that Xvid drivers don't work from Transcode 360 site. under code compatibility.
So I downloaded ffdShow and tried to install. Got the message "Error while Registering ffdshow.ax". Eventually found out that this was down to me not yet having MSVCR71.dll installed in my windows\system32 directory. Downloaded this file from here copied it into windows\system32 and selected the same installations as posted on the Transcode 360 site. This time it worked. Seems like MSVCR71.dll is a dependency of ffdshow.ax.
Once I had done this, I can now stream the AVI files no problem. Only one thing though, the volume of the audio is quite low, so does anybody know how to up it????

After that the Divx worked fine, but anything with Xvid just sits there and I get the infamous spinning wheel until it eventually times out. I can tell its not doing anything because My extender is barely working when I try Xvid files. I also then tried disabling the toolbar as someone said, but that didn't help.
I read through about the first 10 pages of the thread, so I probably missed something. Any help is appreciated.

For some reason when using T360 My audio coming out of my HDTV is very low, and when i put the volume all the way up i get humming and still cant hear the sound that good....anyone having this same issue, can it be a audio codec issue?
couple of reqests:
-Add FF,RR while using T360[if possible]
-Add My Movies Pluggin Support
-Add DD 5.1 Encoding

for 5.1, use ac3 and set to the correct speaker setup in the config. For the profile set to windows media audio 9.1 professional and then go into the settings for that and set to 5.1 with whatever bitrate.

it was working fine two nights ago. all of a sudden last night it just stopped streaming video. the extender resource doesnt have any Network Usage. I tested it using the extender test thing, and i get full bars all the way to HD, and my extender info is at like 2 million something. I havnt changed any config settings on my compy or my xbox. please help me, its soo much easier to watch videos on my tv than my computer.

but there are some things not very clear to me.
I have a windows 2003 datacenter server with 1TB of movies music and stuff.
I will format the C: partition and install Windows XP MCE on it.
than i will do a full windows update on it.
no problems on this routine stuff.
the thing is, what codecs do i need cause i read this topic carfully, and beleef me there are alot of pages on this topic
i was thinking just to install k-lite codepack but i figured out that should work.
so maby could anybody plz post the best codec that work with transcode360 so i can stream the best quality of xvid divx movies to my xbox360
i heard that with the divx6.1 u need to remove the systray icon or something, but i can;t seem to find a tutorial on that.
so maby it would be beter if transcode360 v1.1 beta should have the codes that is supported the best init or something. (just a suggestion)
but for now can anybody please clear up my mind and help me out with the good codecs so i can do this installation without any buggs.

I must say excellent program and glad it came out so quickly! I sold my xbox and was fed up of converting my tv shows!
Anyway, I can get the program to work fine and sometimes I can watch several programs after another. But sometimes I can only get 20 mins in and it freezes.
Once the service on my pc fell over but most of the time I can't see what the problem could be!
My pc is a good spec (AMD 3200XP, 1 gb ram, SCSI HDD) No scrrensaver pn pc or the xbox.
Can anyone recommend a setting change within media centre or transcode 360?
Any help appreciated!

but streaming divx and xvid are working very good.
The thing was that i needed to go with my xbox into the media center section and select a option and press the blue button for more options and than select More.... and there is the transcode add-in i was looking for.
just select the transcode360 bij pressing the green button and the movie starts playing
very very sweet.
now the next step is that i can watch movies online. cause online 2 out of 9 standard online movie channels are working, the rest i can't play for some strange reason.
so i'm trying to make my MCE on my xbox fully functional

I have managed to install Transcode360 on my MCE box and it works but playback is very very choppy.
I guess my 800mhz box just can't do the transcoding fast enough (surprise surprise !)
So I'm trying to utilize another PC on my lan that has plenty of CPU available.
I've installed transcode360 onto that PC but so far have been unable to get this distribution of processing between my MCE box and the more powerful PC working.
Some questions:
1. does the divx video file need to reside on a shared resource that both PCs can access ?
2. does transcode360 need to have the same account logged in on both PCs ? (to explain : I have a user account on my MCE box and a user account on the 2nd PC)
3. I'm not clear from this thread whether transcode360 works with mapped network drives
4. When changing the registry key on my MCE machine to direct transcode360 to my 2nd PC does it only work with IP address or can I indicate "\\pc_name" ? (reason: I have a DHCP server providing IP so this IP address will change regularly)

Yes. And you need to make sure that the Xbox 360 and MCE PC access the resource using a UNC path (i.e. \\computer\share\filename). Because Transcode runs as a service it cannot access files using drive mappings.

4. When changing the registry key on my MCE machine to direct transcode360 to my 2nd PC does it only work with IP address or can I indicate "\\pc_name" ? (reason: I have a DHCP server providing IP so this IP address will change regularly)
You can use a computer name, but leave out the \\, just put pc_name in the registry key.
Finally, if you are running Windows Firewall on the PC that will do the transcoding, go the Exceptions tab of the firewall, click Add Port and add a rule allowing access on TCP port 1401.

I can't see any addition to my context menus after installing Transcode 360.
No "more items" and "transcode" item in my movie context menus.
Below is a detailed explanation of my problem. I hope someone might help me.
I installed DivX 6.1 codec and Transcode 360 together with XBOX 360 extender software and Windows Media Encoder on my MCE 2005 PC.
I can watch divx videos locally on the MCE 2005 PC with both Windows media player and from within Media Center.
I acn also watch recorded movies from my Linksys MCE Extender.
But I can't watch divx videos on the Linksys Extender. Because I can't see any "more" or "transcode" items when I press "info" button on any divx file.
Please help me to find the problem.
My host PC (MCE 2005) does not listen on port 8080 or 1401 (which is asked for on Traqnscode 360 setup). Should it listen ? how ?
And I never was able to install Linksys Extender software on my MCE 2005 PC because before that Xbox 360 extender software was installed. Now my extender works with xbox 360 software. Should I remove it and install original linksys software ? How can I remove the Xbox 360 extender software , there is no uninstall of it ?

Ilker you can test on your MCE machine if the software is correctly installed. You can browse to your Divx/Xvid file and right click on that file (do this in MCE). You than see a More item in the menu. Click the More option and you should see Transcode. If it's not displayed it's not installed correctly.

If I have a hardware encoder in my machine will Windows Media Encoder/Transcode360 be able to make use of it? My fileserver doesn't have enough horsepower to transcode so I was wondering if adding a hardware encoder will help?

No, unfortunately I don't have "more" or "transcode" on the local MCE also.
Besides following command (which is used in installing Transcode 360) fails:

Onl problem now is that when on the MediaPC I can see the shares of m server and map by UNC but when I start the XBOX Media Extender it only sees one share and that is on the Media Centre machine. It does not seem to see shares on my server. Am I missing something?

When I Transcode a file, it ocassionally has audio sync issues. The voices sound like the batteries are running out lol!, but then it goes back to normal. Anyone experieneced this?
By the way my Pc is connected to the 360 via Ethernet cable so i wouldnt have thought it would be lag on the Network.

It's been nearly 10 days and I still cdon't have a "transcode" item in my menu (neither on MCE PC nor my extender)
And nobody (even the developer) seems to be interested in my problem.
I STILL DON'T HAVE a TRANSCODE ITEM ON THE INFO MENU.
now do you still say it's very simple ? Some people have problems with this software. it's not as easy as your setup for some of us.

btw: installed only ffshow... then only xvid then xvid and divx... same thing.... got the transcode icon on the xbox but nothing happens when I try to start the movie with it.

When I browse to my xvid in my videos on the xbox, I hit more on the video, and its just sits there with the transcoder icon highlighted. I have a feeling Im missing something real easy considering most of these replies actually are about the transcode is running . Mine will not even do anything, just sits there with the icon highlighted.

i installed mce one and just install the xpcodecs.... i found that when i use the divx ones thet it freezes my xbox and mce becuase of the thumbnails as where xp codecs have ffdshow and it doesnt do that
the only thing i didnt like aobout the software mce one is u have to click info then more progs then start encode then play to many executions i would like to have just one button on the remote that actually executes everything for me......
I hope transcodes next build will work a treat as i like simple things great work to all

So anyway ive managed to get transcode to work, at first it didnt but after reading this thread and following the ideas of many, it finally works! its a great program.
I have a problem tho, my computer isnt the greatest and the videos are a bit jittery and slow...not REALLY slow, but slow enough to annoy, like skipping every second frame or sumthing i guess u could say. Would it be that i dont have enough RAM for my computer to keep up, the extender says the computer is running at 100% when i transcode? Is it more reliant on RAM then the CPU itself?? IF sumone has any pointers on what i can do to fix it, or if its just hardware, let me know, im willing to buy more RAM for this fantastic product!

Here is a quick update on what is happening with Transcode 360! Runtime is currently working on the "Next Gen" of transcoding solution! Expect to be amazed! I certainly am! I have been fiddling around on some new method of streaming transcoded content to the 360 with Runtime. Let say that the preliminary results are very exiting!
In short you should get:
*Very high video quality (mpeg2 at high bit rate)
*Remote control will pause, resume, skip forward and skip backward the transcoded video
*In theory divx files with AC3 should playback fine in either 2 or 6 channels audio (I will test this out tonight...)
*Lower overall CPU usage (meaning that a slower machine could be used to transcode) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/pop.gif)
*Simpler installation
Runtime is hoping to have something ready for testing by the end of the week! Let all have a good tought for him!

Guess what! Runtime sent me a copy of T360Beta2RC1 tonight! It work quite fine for one day of coding! Expect the same integration in MCE through the My Video/Info/Transcode option. No change here.
The big change is that the transcode start alost instantanously and as I previously said you get control of the whole transcoded file! Pucture quality is very good thank's to ffmpeg!
There is still quite a bit to do to rund up the beta2 but from what I have seen expect something sooner than later!
This will be a major improvement for all 360 owner! Forget about T360Beta1, VLC360 and the rest! The future of divx/xvid streaming is going to be T360Beta2!

Whenever i watch XVID ripped TV episodes i get a seemingly random high pitched squeal that kicks in my amps protection circuitry and turns down the volume. happens a handful of times per episode and only on tv progs, never on full films etc. This is purely a guess but i think its the point where the ad breaks start and its chopped, when i encode the files with Cucusoft the squeal is gone.
So any suggestions to curb this problems cause T360 this rocks the pants off the other offerings i tried apart from this small ear shredding problem.

Well, I don't know. I do not see why it would not. If I can find the time I will look into it.
I am expecting RC2 of T360Beta2 tonight. From the discussion I had with Runtime it should be pretty close to a complete release. If I can I will make a quick video and try to post it on youtube to show what the next gen of transcoding will look like! I am very please with it so far and I think that most 360 users with an MCE 2005 server will enjoy it. This is probably as close at it will get to native playback of xvid/divx files on the 360 itself. Maybe one day MS will finally build this feature into the console. I guess if the PS3 offers it they will follow their lead...

cant seem to get this to work, i get the old time out error.
read thru most of tis forum and tried all different suggestions but none have worked yet.
i can select the file i want and try transcoding it but it times out, the bit i dont get is there are thumb pictures on the files now but normally without transcode there isnt (for xvid files). so its like it can see the file, give me a preview picture of it but not play it
(i only have divx 6.1 and ac3 codecs installed)
any suggestions???
