But I can't get it to work like a keyboard. Has anyone used one in dosxbox? The problem I'm having is the keyboard works and I can move around with it but when it's time to type I can't use the keyboard to type I can just move the arrows around and click a letter with the virtual keyboard

Things like the SmartJoy FRAG are just for translating mouse movements and key presses into gamepad stick movements and button presses. They don't let you use a keyboard for inputting actual characters. The reason the arrow keys worked are because they're being converted to D-pad presses on the XBox side

You'll want to get (or make) a simple USB jack -> XBpx plug cable/adapter, and use a USB PC keyboard with it.

I have been looking at guides for awhile and I think this looks like the best option for me. Would this work for dosxbox?

That USB mod would work (it did for me), although you could always just get an Xbox USB Adapter cable.
