I was trying to play Ultima IV (quest for the avatar) and when I save the game through game utilities and try to load the saved game it just freezes the whole xbox everytime.

It seem that when I just start a new game and save it soon after starting game then i can load the saved game state but after playing it for a while (45min or so) and save it I can't load the saved game without it freezing.

Ive tried to load the different discs too (like a,b,c,d) and I tried using a different rom, with the same result...what do you think?

Using vice64_v9 for the xbox

Thanks for all you time and help

Unfortunately, the current ViceX is still a bit buggy. It crashes a lot when mp3 playback option is turned on (actually it always crashes in that 'mode' with me after several games played).
Also when having put a game in NTSC mode, the emu crashes the Xbox after 2 or so games.
All this has been reported to Madmab, and he`ll check it out when he`s got some time for it.

Don`t know for sure about the save-states, but it could be that it has to to with the same issue: playing a game for a while and doning something within the emulator and crash.

Does it occur with more games?

There is also the issue, when a game which has several disks  (like the Ultima series) , and your loading in a Savestate  which, say you saved when playing on disk 1 and loading it in when playing on disk 2, Vice doesn't recognize it (also mentioned wink.gif ).

Which screenmode is your ViceX running?  (for me ; putting it in  720*576 mode; crashed the emu immediately)

Thanks for the reply asphodel.  I see from other posts that you are as big a fan of C64 as I am, so Im glad to hear your imput.

As far as games using several disks, I've tried it several ways.  I even played the game until it asked for disk 2 (2 is the disk that the save was on)  then I tried to load the saved game and still same result.  Keep in mind that it works well when I save it only with a few minutes of play but when I play for a little while it'll save fine but freezes when I load the save state.

I havent been able tell if it happens on other games yet.  But it have happened to bot versions of ultima I tried.

Running everything in 640x480
Changed everything back to 640x480 last month.  Too many bugs in 720p mode.

Can someone please try to duplicate the problem and maybe together we can find a solution

Thanks Again

I tried to recreate the save problem by playing another game (but the game was a single disk game)and played it for about an hour, saving it many times but it loaded without a problem everytime.
So it is either just a problem with multi disk games or just Ultima IV itself.
Next I will try to recreate the problem with another multi disk game.  I will post the results later.
Has anyone else been able to look at this for me(us)/?

Thanks again

***EDIT***

It looks like its all games in vice64.  Ive tried 2 single disk games and played them both for a little over an hour and then saved them, and both froze when trying to load the save state.
Ive also tried 3 different emu versions.  I tried Vice64x_v4 and v7 and v9, All with the same result!

Any thoughts?

thanks

Question :

The Xtras Pack I`m working on has the multi-disk games zipped in one file (the rest is non-zipped because that`s the only way High-score savers etc will work). Do you have your multi-disk games zipped ? This because when zipped the emu has only one save config. for the game, otherwise every disk has it`s own configuration saved and has it`s own save-state basically. (Not 100% sure though, i`m out of town and can`t check it at the moment)

All games are zipped.  Should I try them unzipped?
Not sure if you mean they should be zipped or not but I will unzip them and try again.  I will try several save states and see if each has its own.

Ive tried with the roms zipped and unzipped and both have the same effect.  Both times when loading the save state, it froze!  However, the in-game save worked with the rom unzipped.  So far Ultima IV can be played and saved using the in-game save function (Q) as long as ur using an unzipped rom.  But most games don't have an in-game save function, so it is kinda useless and this freezing problem is important and needs to be addressed because most C64 game will need to be saved to be completed.

By the way are Asphodel and myself the only 2 people that play the vice emulator??????
Anyone else think this should be addressed?
Would someone mind trying to recreate this problem to see if this is a definite bug or just something wrong with my setup?

Thanks

laugh.gif  Chances are this problem has been around for a while.

Bigby has been discovering all kinds of issues with bluemsxbox since we have been working on Xtras for it.  Hopefully I'll get the problem sorted sometime soon.  tongue.gif

I use Vice64, too. I'm a Commodore guy. sleep.gif

I'm obsessed by Lode Runner at the moment but I can send you this version of Ultima IV if you like.

Thanks waal. Although the commodore version is nostalgic for me, I would love the amiga version.  Hopefully you mean both versions (Whd and Adf) with your settings like your amiga xtras.  By the way, Lode Runner is an amazing game.  One of my favorites.  You should check out a game called "Cliff Hanger" for C64 it kinda like Wiley Coyote and road runner.  One of my Fav's too.  Anyway thanks. Ill wait for that.

Madmab:  Ok thanks.  Ill wait for some update from you.

Thanks All

I assume you are talking about frodoX.  I have used that emu years ago.  Maybe I will give it a try but if i Remember correctly Vice64 was a much easier emu with things like disk swapping etc...For the time being my life has been taken over by Ultima IV.  I have been playing it using the in-game save function and so far no issues.
But I will give frodox another try after the weekend

Thanks for the reminder

**EDIT**
I just checked my inbox, Thanks for the link
