OK, so I have an Xbox of my own that is soft modded and has emulators installed to the hard drive.  I showed my cousins and they decided they wanted one done to.  So they brought me over 2 xboxes.  one is chipped and boots in what looks like the original xbox screen.  the other is chipped and boots into linux.  not sure what version all i know is previous owner said it was used as print server and still plays xbox games.  however it has a password that previous owner does not remember so there is no way to fully boot into linux.

so now knowing that, my question is is there any way to install emulators onto the hard drive.  if so how do i get to the ftp and how can i install a new dashboard, figuring that if you can install emulators to the hard drive than a dashboard should be possible as well.

thank you in advance for your help.  doing my soft mod was much easier than this seems at the moment.

Sometimes chips have a hidden bios setup that you can boot by holding down a certain button combo,
do you happen to know which chip it is?

because i have an X3 in mine and it will boot the bios thing when i hold the white button during the bootup sequence.

and my cousin has another chip (don't remember which one) and i discovered that that one also has a similar button combo.

if you could get into the bios setup you could probably format the entire HD and establish an FTP connection,
because those options are in my X3 chip.

Or you could try one of those old evox boot discs (at least i think thats what they are called)

this should boot the evox bootdisc and give you the option to format and if you want install (horribly outdated) software.

but all you need is just that ftp connection (and maybe the format option)

so give that a go. (can probably be found via torrents)

one of the xboxes, the one with linux i think, says smartxx v3 on it.  the other i think is X3.  I think i may have an old evox boot disc.  should work.  once i get ftp ability i can put updated software onto it.  noticed you kept saying something about format the HD.  is that alright to do.  I know the HD has the eeprom on it and if that gets deleted then the xbox becomes unusable.  is this correct or is it different with chipped systems.  as stated earlier i am a complete noob when it comes to the chips.

The hard disk doesn't have the eeprom on it. The hard disk might be locked with the eeprom, but that's completely different. If your Xbox is chipped then once you can boot with a rescue disc and get FTP access you can delete and reformat the hard disk as often as you like.

There might be an eeprom on the hard disk, but if so it's only there as a backup.

It's not a backup if it's on the hard drive - it's only a backup once it's on a separate disk. On the Xbox hard drive it's just a copy...... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)

oh.  k.  I just remembered that when I was planning on putting a new hard drive on my soft modded xbox that I needed the eeprom which was on the hard disk.  but i now remember that I had to do a backup first so that I could get the eeprom.

Well I'm pretty sure I have the slayer boot up disk or what ever it is.  I will try this out tomorrow or Saturday and see if I can get this working.

If there is anything else anyone can think of that I might need to know to get this done feel free to let me know.

You should be okay with just an old installer disc, because with a chipped xbox you can't really fuck up.
Thats why I've always preferred modchips compared to softmods, much less worrying going on.

I should really have mentioned that in my first post though,
But i keep forgetting that a softmod requires more steps.
