Doable Emulators
« on: October 04, 2010, 06:30:00 AM »

Well well well... we have talked a lot about porting Sega Saturn emulators, 3d0, CD-I, Jaguar, and so on... This discussions are OK, and I am the first who will be very happy with a Sega Saturn emulator, but... in those discussions we allways face the eternal question: will it be doable? And at the moment we don't have answers...

So, I suggest to make a different post to discuss about emulators that we know that they can be done FOR SURE. I suggest to include systems that fill the following requirements:

A : THERE IS an existing emulator that runs properly in other plattforms, and its source code is available (open-source or not).

B : That emulator does not have huge requirements (keep in mind that our Xbox is a 733 Celeron with 64 MB RAM)

If I am forgetting any other requirement, please write it here...

With these requirements, let's see some options:

1) And the list begins with our beloved... Sega Pico!!!  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/jester.gif)  Yes, there is an emulator named Picodrive that supports it.

2) The Tomy Tutor and Tomy Pyuuta: Japanese 16-bit computers. Although the simple option is porting the code from the MESS emulator, there is a lot of aditional information about emulation of that machine here:

Emulating the Tomy Tutor

There was even an emulator working in a C64, so emulating it in the Xbox must be doable.
There is information about the games and applications here:

Pyuuta Carts

If it is worth the effort or not, that is another question...  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

I'd like to know more about the C64 Tomy emu.  Let me know in a PM.

I've always wanted to see a proper Neogeo CD emulator on xbox, we have one already but its lacking alot of features including proper game support and a gui. The emulator itself hasn't been updated in ages....

The psp plays neogeo cd very well, and its nothing that the xbox couldn't do easily. It just needs someone to put some time and effort into it.

There are some really good quality games on neogeo cd, I like the remixed cd quality music you get from playing the games and the cd exclusive games.

if only we could get one that has better game support and a nice gui.

Well, as far as I have read, the Tomy has the honor of being the first 16-bit machine emulated by an 8-bit machine!! To be honest, we are not talking about "emulation", we talk about "simulation": Cameron Kaiser did an impressive work of reverse engineering with the roms of the Tomy, and make possible that every part of the C64 simulated a part of the Tomy.

So, that simulator does not have in memory a full "virtual Tomy machine" (that is emulation). Instead, Cameron achieved that the C64 made everything that makes a Tomy. It is a very deep work, but it is possible indeed. I don't know anything about simulation, but I believe that it is even more difficult than emulation, although maybe anyone can confirm this point. In fact, with enough work, maybe a Xbox can simulate systems that it cannot emulate, but this requires a HUGE work so I don't think that it is a feasible thing. Well, maybe we can try to simulate the Sega Pico...  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/jester.gif)

Commodore 16/+4, it got dissed when XPort did the C64, PET and VIC20 ports. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)
There's several open source emulators available
http://yape.plus4.net/ - Open source version available. Best C16 emu
http://sourceforge.net/projects/plus4emu/ Very good also

I'd love a plus 4 emulator - it was my first computer!

I'm guessing it would be possible through linux, but so much more hassle than a native emulator. I've no idea why xport didn't port it with the rest of vice...

I'll search for some source code for emulators for the following. I pretty sure they would be doable if we can dig up something:

Some Japanese computers that have some interesting titles:
PC-88
X-1

Consoles:
RCA Studio II
Odyssey I
FM Towns Marty

Handhelds:
Gameking
Pocketstation
MegaDuck

I am pretty sure MESS supports quite a few of these systems, but I'll do some more research...

Yes.
MANY interesting titles - Japanese language however.
The original marvelous wonderful NES 8 Bits SARATOMA came from NEC PC-88 computer.

SARATOMA is SARADA KUNI NO TOMATO HIME.
Princess Tomato in the Salad Kingdom.

The Japanese game (even on Famicom) involves nicotine, booth and cabaret dancers.
The NES version was changed to donuts, juice and other fluffy stuff.

Cosme.

Odyssey2 is ported.  Odyssey probably can't be ported.  It's nothing but a blip of light on your TV screen that you put different overlays on depending on which game you choose.  The "carts" are nothing but a series of metal strips that join up with the strips in the machine and tell the system to make the light behave differently depending on which game you choose.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magnavox_Odyssey

EDITED TO ADD:

I've always wanted to see an XPORT emulator for the Vectrex. The idea behind the Vectrex was just a more advanced version of the Odyssey.  Games were much more elaborate and played on a special TV screen that was part of the machine.  Color overlays were then put on top of the screen to give a more appealing appearance, but unlike the Odyssey, many of these games could be played without the overlays since they were often used for aesthetic purposes only.

I figure if somebody who knows how to do it would get the XPORT code wrapped around this emu (that was already ported to the XBox), then the transparent keyboard function in the XPORT emus could be modified to display virtual images of the overlays that came with each game.

If that could be done, the Odyssey could be done the same way as well.  That's assuming there is some sort of emulator with open source available for the machine though.  I've never looked into it myself, so I couldn't say.

I would like to see a better emulation plasytation games. I wondered if it would be feasible to see another emulator, ePSXe is not open source, a shame because it is the best emulator. But I also wanted to ask whether to launch Virtual Game Station for Windows 98 for Xbox, the emulator uses very few resources and the emulation is very good. someone test if it works?

We'd all like to see better PSX emulation (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)    Who knows....?  Somebody may do it.  Never thought I'd see any Nintendo 64 updates while I was here but everyonce in a while somebody would do something with it (like finally supporting 4 controllers).  FreakDave has done a hell of a lot with it recently too, and Monkey worked with a few people here to make a great pre-configuration file for all the working games.

I'm not familiar with Virtual Game Station.  Would it require running Windows 98 to run then?  If it does it's impossible since nobody ever got any version of Windows working on the XBox in any useful way.
