N64 To Usb, Usb To Xbox
« on: May 22, 2010, 03:39:00 PM »

Would plugging an N64 controller into an N64 to USB converter, then plugging that into the Xbox work with Surreal? If not, is there another rather simple way to make an N64 controller work with an Xbox? I've searched this many times and not come up with an absolute answer. If not, I think I can afford a replacement N64, but since I prefer to do anything on my Xbox, I'd like to just fit an actual 64 controller to my Xbox and be done with it. Especially if I can get the Transfer Pak working with Pokemon Stadium 1 & 2.

Even if you got the controller working, I'm not sure the emulator itself has support for the transfer pak. I'm also not sure if the N64 used analog signals in the controllers, I know that is an issue with NES controllers as I looked into getting one to work with the Xbox before.

I would say if you wanted the feel of an N64 controller, you may be able to hack something together using Xbox controller parts and a N64 shell.... but that's assuming your skilled in soldering and electronics in general... and assuming the boards are similar sizes and all that.....

As for your original question, I have a USB SNES adapter and it does not work on ZSNES or SNES9. I have the USB xbox cord and tried to just plug it in that way. It also doesn't work on XBMC. So I'm guessing it wouldn't but you could always try.

You can't just hook up a controller and have it work. This is because the X-Box only knows how to communicate with X-Box controllers.

The most common work-around for this is the VGA controller mod, where you wire your controller of choice into an X-Box controller. The problem with this is that the console isn't directly communicating with the N64 controller, so a transfer pack won't work without some special wiring (and even then, Surreal would need to be tweaked to support the thing).

Wow, that's a cool mod. I think I'm going to try this out for SNES and NES. Parts don't cost that much if I fry something tongue.gif

So, how do the PSX adapters allow for the xbox to communicate with PSX controllers? I use a PS2 controller for most emulators and it works fine.

They're probably purpose-built Xbox adaptors. They convert PS2 input into Xbox output.
The main problem with the N64 To Usb, Usb To Xbox idea is that the N64 to USB adaptor is just an HID, like a mouse or other USB attachment for a computer. It needs a driver to understand what it's outputting. Each emulator would need to implement the driver for your specific N64 to USB adaptor.

I wonder if that PSX adapter could be modified to accept N64 or NES controllers and out put in a Xbox signal or if its only compatible with PSX.

Darn. I figured the N64 to USB to Xbox thing wouldn't work. Does anyone even make straight N64 to Xbox adapters, or prefabricated Xbox controllers that look exactly like N64 controllers? I can probably work on incorporating real rumble, memory, and transfer pak support in the code if I had a computer, which at the moment I don't, but when I get one, I'll need something to do, so... This popped into my mind. If I had a prefab controller, it'd be way easier, especially since I'm a software guy, not a hardware guy. :)

There is no adapter I know of for N64 to Xbox, the only one I know of is PSX to Xbox. As far as the prefab controller, that would not have happened because the Xbox isn't supposed to play N64 games  wink.gif

Your only hope of getting something like a N64 controller is to make it yourself, or have someone make it.... or do the VGA thing Bomb Bloke recommended, which sounds cool.

Maybe someone should ask this guy to implement the drivers for the 360 N64 emu.

Since there's already usb ports on the 360....

I may have a laptop sometime soon(ish), and if someone reminds me when I do, I'd at least try.

Most of the time, if you give me a month, I can learn a language, but if I don't use it regularly, I forget it almost entirely. I have learned C about 3 times, lol. I need to learn it again, though. Maybe I'll relearn how USB communication, and Xbox communication work soon, and try to figure something out with the Xbox64 controller stuff.

Maybe I could give someone instructions so they could mass produce them, lol. I certainly couldn't make them myself, as I'm horrible at soldering and I'm still not sure about some other terms I've seen while trying to figure out this hack.

I just hope that Surreal 64 keeps getting better and better, as it has lately, or all these crazy ideas I have will be for nothing.

Not related to your thread, but I notice from your sig that you are using UnleashX Version 0.37.1218A Build 543, which is quite an old version (the latest is UnleashX 0.39.0528A Build 584). Is there any particular reason, or have you just not bothered updating it?

I wonder if this would work, if someone could integrate the drivers on that floppy into the emus.

The reason I still use such an old build is because at the moment, I don't have a computer. I get on here with a cell phone, (and a crappy one at that). If I get that laptop, I'll update, but until then, unless my friends stop being dipweeds, I'm stuck. It's why I'm posting about Hardware, cause I don't have the latest Surreal CE even.

There's already usb ports on the original Xbox...The problem is adding one driver is only going to allow one type of N64-USB adaptor to work.

I'm the type of guy who... If I have a computer, and internet, I'll no-life a project I'm doing until everyone's happy with it. I mean, there can only be so many drivers that the people here would actually want done, so I could just take requests, and try to get them all ported. Wouldn't bother me, cause I'd learn a bunch in the process.

I talked to the guy who makes Blissbox and he said he makes Xbox versions of it that allow you to use any non-analog controllers.... unfortunately N64 has an analog joystick so he said it won't work 100%

I am thinking of getting one for SNES, NES and Genesis though, he charges $35 for 1 port and $10 each additional port and $5 shipping... seems like a cool thing for $60
