A Zsnes Question For Nes! :)
« on: March 27, 2010, 06:04:00 PM »

i was kind of dabbling around in the emulator forum today looking at some of the older topics and came across this post:

http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?sho...w=&st=&

my question for you nes is do you mind if i take a look at perhaps fixing the sound core for zsnesxbox?? i dont know if you had any plans on doing it or taking a look but i dont want to mess with your work on this  emu without asking you first.  as a matter of fact i hadnt even checked to see if the source was available.

i do know and i guess you could call this sort of a rollback sound core as alot of games would not have that "tin-can sound", megaman x series, castlevania IV, and others came to mind.

please let me know when you find the time, id like to put my hand on in fine tuning all the rest of the xbox emus that need a little more to make them next to perfect. with your release of nestopia recently its kind of given me a little motivation as i had some ideas for working pce gaming and trying to get that sound fix for zsnes.  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/pop.gif)

XT-

EDIT*** seems like you stated in your post nothing could be done to fix it, so i guess theres no way to "rollback" or so to speak?

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/huh.gif) I prefer using xsnes9x instead of zsnesxbox because it doesn't have these audio problems, especially for Megaman X.  Seems to run almost every snes game perfectly. The only snes game that I had issues with was "Charles Barkley's Shut Up and Slam", which it didn't render graphics correctly.

I swear I have played Megaman X a million times and never even noticed the audio being messed up...is it really subtle or somthing?

There's not any way to fix the sound in ZSNES. You would have to re-port the entire emulator (not a trivial task) from another core that had more accurate sound for those games. However, you will find if you did that, you would break lots of other games. Trust me, the core in ZsnexBox is the best core there is. The latest PC version is not the best. With every "new" version of ZSNES over the last 3 years, it seems it gets more crippled overall. They might have fixed the sound issues in some games however, it was at the expense of breaking other things. See how far you get in Super Mario RPG in ZsnexBox 1.3 (the last version that used a newer core)

There was a LOT of research in finding the core that ZsnexBox uses. It is the best overall core there is. There are a few games that have minor sound issues, but this is not some major thing that affects all games. Honestly, the only game that I know of that has the "metallic" sound is Street Fighter 2 Turbo. I've never noticed anything in the Megaman X games. As far as sound issues go, the sound core is far more accurate overall than the one in XSNES9X (try playing any of the square games. The sound is nowhere close).

This is all a moot point anyway. That's because virtually nothing runs fullspeed in any SNES emulator on the Xbox other than in ZsnexBox. Most games will average 45 FPS (or lower). Someone could port BSNES and get perfect emulation. The reason no one does is because the Xbox couldn't run the games fullspeed. Who wants to play games with frameskipping? No one. That's the same problem with XSNES9X or Snes9xBox. Neither one can run games fullspeed. Zsnexbox can run virtually all games fullspeed, with very accurate sound overall, and has 10 times as many features than any other SNES emulator on the Xbox. It's the best there is. There are a few games that do not work correctly on ZsnexBox (Starfox 2). They should be played on another emulator.

Overall, anyone not using ZsnexBox for 99% of their SNES emulation is only cheating themselves. Until a system (like the 360) gets a port of BSNES, then ZSNES is the way to go.

thanks for the reply nes. i def use zsnesxbox for all my snes gaming when im not playing the real thing, lol.

i dont even think the xbox has enough juice for bsnes. from what i have read lately on there its pretty much the nestopia of snes gaming and pretty dang accurate. looks like blargs filter for snes is in there too.

I've noticed some very minor sound distortion in Super Mario World when Mario collects a yoshi coin. This is very subtle and the only reason I can notice is because I played the game to death in junior high. smile.gif This distortion is present in the Xport SNES emulator as well.

NES is right, ZSNES is the way to go for SNES on the Xbox. It runs much better than the alternatives and won't shit the bed halfway through the game, which happens from time to time in other SNES emulators on the Xbox. biggrin.gif

Thanks again for it NES!

Dragon View shits the bed about 80% into the game on ZSNESXbox, but I've never seen another problem with it myself.

The build used in Zsnexbox was originally recommended by me and I can assure you that it was the best build available at the time.  The 2/28/05 build was the only build that supported both BSZelda and Top Gear 3000.  All builds after that broke BS support.  It also has fixes for Chrono Trigger, Star Fox, Super Mario RPG, and Kirby Dreamland to name a few.

ZsnexBox 1.0 - 1.3 used the newest core. If a game doesn't work correctly in ZsnexBox 3.6, you could see how it would run in a newer version by trying it in ZsnexBox 1.3. The GUI isn't good in that version.

I ported the latest version of ZSNES without much testing. I assumed the latest was the best. FAR from it. A core that was 2 years older was the best as far as compatibility and stability.

What I do is play all games on ZsnexBox 3.6. If a game doesn't work or has a problem, I try it on version 1.3. If it still doesn't work, I use Snes9XBox.
