I'm pretty sure you don't need bios's for any of those.

I think there are BIOS files in there for those emulators that need them. I don't remember having to get them myself, but maybe I did... It was a long time ago.

I'm about 99% sure you don't need any for any of the XPORT emus.

You do need the Famicom bios to play on Nestopia though if you're into Famicom games.

You don't need bioses for the consoles emus by Xport. Computer are another story but even here, they are often supplied with the archive...

For NestopiaX by Nes6502, and only if you wanna play Famicom Disk System games, you have to copy your disksys.rom in the bios directory.

on a side note, is there any advantage to playing the FDS version of games? Grafix or sound wise?

Several games are better on the FDS, although you have some loading time and flipping disks to deal with.   I can't recall the games off the top of my head, but they're included in the Xtras.  The Famicom had better music than the NES did.  Otherwise, I believe they're all the same games.  It's just the music improvement.

Metroid is a good example of a better game on the fds & more than just the music was different for it as well as you can see at that link & the fds Mario Bros version apparantely has Minus World levels as well (the Japanese cart didn't) so there are some reasons to try it out other than the music
