nes6502, is there a way to set the resolution NestopiaX uses to play the games, to the really correct value?

No. Not automatically. The only way to do this is:

1) Someone with knowledge of what is correct (like Corpsefargo) needs to eyeball it to get the correct settings.
2) Post on the forum what the values for zLeft, zRight, zTop, and zBottom are in his D:\ini\emulation\Game.ini file.
3) Everyone who wants "Perfect" aspect ratio will have to put those values in their Default - 480.ini file.

It's possible, but there is no automatic way.

EDIT - apparently Corpsefargo already found the settings and posted them at 1Emulation.

For the 10x11 pixel aspect ratio users under 480i/480p!
(640x480... full screen horizontally, but tiny tiny tiny distortion...
accepted sometimes!)

zLeft=-0.740000
zRight=0.800000
zTop=1.200000
zBottom=0.050000
SoftwareFilter=13
HardwareFilter=0
vsyncEnabled=1
pixelRatio=1
FlickerFilter=0
Soften=1

For the real thing (512x448, pure NES, but as you may know,
with some black borders on left and right. [They really don't bother me!])

zLeft=2.079998
zRight=-1.699999
zTop=1.200000
zBottom=0.050000
SoftwareFilter=13
HardwareFilter=0
vsyncEnabled=1
pixelRatio=0
FlickerFilter=0
Soften=1

[EDIT] the problem was that my roms all had the .NES extension in caps. changed to .nes, and it's fine. quirky.

I didn't realize the code was only looking for .nes files and ignored .NES files.

QUOTE
If you got my roms than you can rest assured that the synopsis NES put in this emu works 99.999999% of the time too.

The only thing I changed was fixing the column width so that each line was 72 characters wide (Notepad2 will do this) and fixed a line break for Castlevania 2 crc values. If there is an update to the file you will need to fix the line breaks.

QUOTE
Paperboy II actually works in XPORT/Madmab now after XT fixed it, but cool to see the other games working.

Does Time Lord work in this build? That's the only mainstream game other than Paperboy II that didn't work before.

Also, I'm wondering if this can play ASCII Bros., a SMB I hack that really looked cool.

Paperboy 2 doesn't work in the latest beta of mednafen I have. I guess there is a newer version where it is fixed.

Time Lord works perfectly. ASCII Bros. starts but the controls don't work. Have you tried NestopiaX 1.0 with all of your Xtras? You shouldn't have to change anything except point the directories in the Path.ini to the games and art you use for Mednafen.

Yep... XT did some mapper fixes and got about 6 games working and Paperboy II is one of them.  I don't think a lot of people have that beta yet.

Great about Time Lord.  I loved that game.

Bummer about ASCII Bros.  I wonder what they did with that hack that nothing plays it.

I haven't had a chance to try it yet, but I'm looking forward to seeing how well it works with the XTras.  I'm also curious to see how the synopsis works and if it will be easy to update it.

I'll let you know when I try it out.  Should be this weekend.

Thanks,
~Rx

Thanks for providing us here with the values from Corpsefargo, the values for the real 512x448 NES experience actually look really good, even though they are for sure not yet 100% accurate, when I play Castlevania for example you can notice that at the top of the screen is something missing, the score is halfway out of the screen.
Also a horizontal flickering line is constantly moving up the screen from similar to the problem that was mentioned here:

http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?s=&showtopic=693135&view=findpost&p=4539574

I could easily fix this in XPorts emulators but I am not so familiar with the values in the INI files, but probably Corpsefargo can later find the correct ones.

Where is the Default - 480.ini you mentioned, I didn't find it, or do I have to create it myself? Of course editing the values in every game one by one can't be the solution  wink.gif

Once the correct values are found I hope you somehow could make it possible to make them the default ones as an option in the settings, if it is not too much work, that would really make it the ultimate NES emulator  smile.gif

Edit: Seems I could fix the little graphic problems, about the flickering line I didn't turn on the 10x11 pixel aspect ratio, my bad, I turned it on i the main menu but it seems that didn't affect Castlevania, probably because I ran it before without the 10x11 pixel aspect ratio turned on.

About the cut off text at the top of the screen: It seems that this is no problem of the ratio but the picture is probably just a little too high, I just moved it down a little with the left stick, without changing the resolution. So far I didn't feel anything is missing now at the bottom of the screen  wink.gif

Not sure how to change the values to simply move the screen down a little, but maybe Corpsefargo can have a look at that, but the games look wonderful authentic now indeed  smile.gif

1) Open D:\skins\Default - 480\Default - 480.ini
2) Edit the screen values with the ones posted.
3) Start the emulator
4) Main Menu->Options->Select GUI Skin->Default - 480

Now all future games will use the correct screen settings

5) Main Menu->Utilities->Reset Game Config Files

Now any games that you have started in the past will have their config files updated to use the new setings.

I don't think RessX released the enhanced NES sets but once he does you can just simply point to them by changing the paths.ini file.  For example..

QUOTE
UsePathINI=1
ROMPath=E:\emulators\Medna-NES\nesroms
F:\media\Nes\Artwork\Action
F:\media\Nes\Artwork\Title
F:\media\Nes\Artwork\Box Front
F:\media\Nes\Artwork\Cart
D:\artwork\Shots 5
D:\artwork\Shots 6
D:\artwork\Shots 7
D:\artwork\Shots 8
D:\sram
D:\ini
D:\savestates
F:\movies\nes
F:\movies\

I also noticed if you have your ROMS divided into subdirectories you have to back ALL the way out (keep pressing B ) in order to get back to the main menu...  blink.gif

This is awesome news.  Thank you!

I had to test this right away and I'm trying to nail down a problem.  It can crash on start-up and deleting the NestopiaX\ini\NestopiaX.ini file is required to get it to start again.

Hopefully my testing will help narrow down the problem:

Start NestopiaX.
Do not touch any settings.
Exit NestopiaX.
Start NestopiaX.
NestopiaX starts successfully.

Start NestopiaX.
Change resolution to desired 720p and select 720p skin.
Exit NestopiaX.
Start NestopiaX.
NestopiaX starts successfully.

Start NestopiaX.
Play a game.
Exit NestopiaX.
Start NestopiaX.
NestopiaX starts successfully.

Start NestopiaX.
Play a different game.
Exit NestopiaX.
Start NestopiaX.
NestopiaX starts successfully.

Start NestopiaX.
Play a game I have played before.
Exit NestopiaX.
Start NestopiaX.
NestopiaX now crashes on startup and xbox is hard locked, needs powered off/on.
Deleting the NestopiaX\ini\NestopiaX.ini file allows it to start again.

Thanks a lot for the explanation, now all games run with the values I entered and I am in heaven  love.gif

I changed the values for the real NES experience a little, maybe others can have a try and see if they are better for them too. The resolution is untouched but the picture is moved down a little as it was obviously a little too high on my tv, as I said play Castlevania 1 for example and look at the score.

zLeft=2.079998
zRight=-1.699999
zTop=0.240001
zBottom=-0.909999
SoftwareFilter=13
HardwareFilter=0
vsyncEnabled=1
pixelRatio=0
FlickerFilter=0
Soften=1
disableMenuSounds=0
Region=0
UnlimitedSprites=0
EmulationMusicVolume=0
ResetType=1
RewindSound=1
ColorMode=0
PaletteSelected=-1
NTSCResolution=0
NTSCSharpness=0
NTSCColorBleed=0
NTSCArtifacts=0

I followed the steps as best I could, and I did not get a crash.

I had to make some assumptions since there is some detail missing. For example:

Start NestopiaX.
Play a different game.
Exit NestopiaX.
Start NestopiaX.
NestopiaX starts successfully.

Start NestopiaX.

You didn't say exit before the last start.
How are you starting NestopiaX? (Command line?, what dashboard?)
How are you exiting? Are you exiting the game, then picking exit from the Main Menu? Are you doing an IGR to reboot the Xbox?
How are you starting the games? From the Favorites menu? From the ROM browser? From the Command Line?
Have you edited the Path.ini file?
Do you have any files on your X, Y, or Z partition (if so delete them)
Are you running NestopiaX off the E partition? If so, is there at least 1GB free on the E partition? If not, strange things can happen.

Ah, I didn't realize copy/pasting the formatting made that part unclear.  When it started successfully, I didn't start it again.  In that running instance, I tried the next action.  So it should look like:

Start NestopiaX.
Play a different game.
Exit NestopiaX.
Start NestopiaX.
NestopiaX starts successfully.

Play a game I have played before.
Exit NestopiaX.
Start NestopiaX.
NestopiaX now crashes on startup and xbox is hard locked, needs powered off/on.

QUOTE

From the auto-generated menu entry in xbmc.  No manual commands.

QUOTE

I was exiting by Pressing B to go back to the main menu, then choosing Exit from the main menu.

QUOTE

I was starting games from the main menu's Select Game entry.  I did not use any Favorites.

QUOTE
Have you edited the Path.ini file?

Yes, but only changed the drive and the directory of each line to match where the location of a roms directory and NestopiaX's directory on my G drive.

QUOTE
Do you have any files on your X, Y, or Z partition (if so delete them)

xbmc's ftp server isn't showing those partitions and it seems to be working now, so I didn't look further into this.

QUOTE
Are you running NestopiaX off the E partition? If so, is there at least 1GB free on the E partition? If not, strange things can happen.

It's on the G partition with 9 gig free.

Since you couldn't reproduce it, I deleted the directory to delete all possible settings files and re-uploaded a fresh NestopiaX.  I can now say for sure I have changed no settings except resolution and skin to 720p and also editing the Path.ini to point to the directories on my G drive.  I can't reproduce the crash anymore.

Maybe it was a combination of some settings I may have changed when I first installed it and was playing around with it, because it was reproducible.  It started successfully until I played a game which I had played before, leading me to believe something was going on with the use of game specific settings files.

But it's possibly a moot point now.  I don't get the crash now after starting clean.  Thanks for looking at this.

Now hopefully Cospefogo will come up with some 720p settings!
