Simple Emulator Binaries

Mmm, this is interesting. Parents with children may find that very useful. In this way, a child can insert a CD and play a game automatically without launching the XBMC or the emulator. In some cases, children don't have the skills to do this, or they don't speak English... or they simply cannot read!!  smile.gif

It is an interesting idea. Let's see if any Xbox guru can answer it...

I use snes9xexpress on my Kubuntu PC and it has a shortcut under Applications, Games. But point taken. A GUI for Mednafen would be really handy as well.

Whit the .cut files in xbmc You can do the same with the existing emulators, but You always see the startupscreen and the menu of the emulator.  I don't like that and it is only extra weight for the system.

Just delete the skin files for the emulator then you won't see the startup screen or menus when you launch a .cut file from XBMC.

You can launch (at least Xport Emulators) though the command line. There is a dashboard called RDX that does just what you are talking about but it was long abandoned (about 5 years ago). If you know how to write Xbox code well you should grab the source from Xbins and mess around with it. I have tried to mess with the code myself but I always destroy the whole thing trying to add stuff.

For now though, the new CoinOps Reignite Showcase R5 does launch SNES and GENESIS games and Final Burn Legends launches Genesis games.

This RDX dashboards is just what I meant, it's simple and fast, a shame development stopped.  I'm already searching for the sources. Maybe I can use this and with a xbmc plug-in I can make something similar in xbmc.

Imagine in xbmc:

Programs -> Games -> Snes -> Super Mario Kart

Just the same procedure as when You wold watch a movie or listen to some music.  Nice and simple.  I think I finally found a project to learn some programming.

I think you can set the emulators to quit the rom back to dashboard, it would be a bit slower than what you want I think, but it would essentially let you do what you want if you used .cut files. That could always be your back up plan.

It could be done, but on the x-port emulators a good portion of the interface is accessible from within the game so it is questionable how much of a gain one could get from stripping it down.  Then there is the question of network accessibility.  Since it plays a part in the length of time it takes the emu to load.

If one relied on the "front end" to unpack anything from across the network then you could probably get away with removing it.  But then you wouldn't have network play.  Or at the very least maybe have it only intialize if the user wants to use it.  But then that in of itself creates problems with computer emu's which typically require swapping of disks.  So playing games over the network with them creates another dilemna.

Ultimately one would have to sit down and figure out which menu items to make accessible and which ones would only be available from the front end.  There are a bunch of other issues I'm not gonna go into at the moment.  Either way it would take a fair amount of work and ALOT of testing.
