Readable Dvd's/cd's

Hey guys, First off, i have the original Phillips dvd drive. Now i want to make some cdr-w/dvdr-w discs that my xbox will READ and RUN. I have a X2.3 Pro (installing sometime this week) do i need this installed to be able to run a burnt disc? Now assuming there is a way to run a burnt disc, please tell me what brand of disc. (prefrably purchaseable in the usa)
