Bad Modchip Flash Help
« on: October 05, 2003, 12:00:00 AM »

hello everybody,

i flashed my homebrew modchip with a 256kb file.
the xbox now just boots for 2 seconds then turns off does it again then turns on and flashes redgreen.

i figured out that the friggin bios is obviosly 1mb and needs a full image but the problem now is how to flash it again?
i tried unlocking the hardrive and using the font exploit to put freex evox on so i could flash the tsop,
but that didn't work (i tried with the drive locked and unlocked)

can u pls help me as i just bought 3 new gamez and i wanna play them!!!!!!

thanx.

if you bought 3 original xbox games i am sure they will work with the original xbox bios...just take off the mod and play away..as for the modchip...since you programered them with a 256KB bios...just erase them and programe them again with the programer that u used the first place.....with the correct size that is it...

i would play them but the thing is i had evox installed an now all it does is goto error screen 16.
also i dont have a flasher i used evox for that and when it got about a quarter of the way it just stopped and there was nothing i could do except turn it off :-(

i also tried connecting hdd to computer but hdd_driver is stoopid and doesn't work most of the time but i did manage to grab a backup image of the hard disk. i tried the font exploit but all hdd_driver does is rename files when i put them on the disk.

eg.. i put xboxdash.xbe it renames to xboxdash.xbeyyyyyyyyyyyyy with little dots on the y's.

so xbox is f***ked all it does is turn on and off with modchip and display errors without.

any ideas???

or do i need to buy new modchip?

error 16 is a dash/date problem.....

can be fixed by hotswapping drives on another xbrick is how I usually get around this common problem

hmmm.... - might be able to get around it if you got a mod with the old D6ef bios and a evox/slayer disc in there as this bios ignores a date/dash problem and boots from evox

this bios is good for partitioning an unformatted/new h/d I have found so may help

somehow you gotta get the old ms-dash restored on there and then when it boots up on old bios it go THROUGH the ms-dash to set date/time....

atm it is well confused and can easily find the ms-dash using the old ms-bios so it can't set date time

well that is my theory anyway - but when I've hot-swapped the drives over on another modded xbrick and redone the C drive or the retail drive all was well

mind you if you can borrow another mod you may get the xbrick to boot and then try reflashing the duff chip by hotswapping - yes I know you got a homebrew but can be done

or if you know some with a flashed tsop and they trust you - lol, then wire a flashrom socket and fit switch to 5v on the lpc....

fire up the xbox on the tsop - go to evox - just before you flash tsop - plug in homebre to socket & flip switch/power to homebrew

when you go to flash tsop it should detect the homebrew mod when it asks you to "press y to flash"

a lot of fun but have done a flashrom homebrew this way - found it was better than using uniflash

hey that is a point grab an old pc and follo the uniflash/dos tutorials

check out the tutorials on xbox-scene.com about flashing a flashrom homebrew by using a old pc

it does kinda work but evox was better as it seemed to work better with a few different chips that uniflash ran into problems

though uniflash will do a AM29F040B with a 512kb bios or even a 256kb bios - halfflash - i think

jeez my experience on homebrew is a long frustrating story indeed - nearly a week of flashing before i cracked it - the AM29040B'S were a bit iffy I reckon but another Winbond would work perfectly as a homebrew but uniflash was having grief flashing them but evox flashed the windond flashrom perfectly

oh jeez - it is a long story indeed

hmmm - hotswap the h/d - easiest method perhaps

best of luck

i would use another box but i dont have one and my cousins wont let me use theirs.
i tried using my computer to flash the nios with uniflash 1.17 but didn't work,
so i put the normal comp bios back in and it caught on fire when i turned the comp on!!!!!!!!!!!!
(later i found out there was a newer version of uniflash that works!!)
now i am very upset as no xbox or pc :-(

i also tried making lpc programmer but way to hard so i gave up.

my only options now:
$50 modchip AUD
$40 new comp bios chip AUD

plus i have no money!

pls someone help me...

JJJJJEEEEEEEEEEEZZZZZZZZZZ

you MUST of put the pc bios/flashrom back in UPSIDE DOWN for it to heat up so quickly and actually catch fire

I pulled the flashrom out of an old p166 pc at least 20 times when I was playing around with making my own homebrew and the thing still works
I also said use an OLD pc not ya main pc

even then if you read some of the tutorials not all pc mobo's work that well with uniflash

Hopefully you still have another pc or access to one as you replied saying ya pc is shagged now......

PC problem.......

hopefully you backed up the bios onto the pc's h/d before it blew up

now you need to get another flashrom and flash it using the old pc bios you backed up - maybe this can be prgrammed on another really old crappy pc with a recent version of uniflash - think the version I used was 1.32 or if not compatible the awardflash may work.

If you didn't back up the bios then this is more serious as you need to get the bios from ya mobo's site so you need to find out the EXACT model and revision of your pc motherboard then go to the site and d/load the bios - jeez I hope you backed up the bios calling it for example:

pc.bin

or it may call for a new mobo - ouuuccchhh

most bios chips are either a 128kb image or 256kb on pc's so check what size the pc.bin is

XBOX problem:

well if you can unlock your h/d properly you can then just take the hd round to a m8's or a shop and then they can hot-swap it to re-do the ms-dashboard
then you will need to relock it to work in your xbox if you still have no modchip

when that is done you can at least play originals until a new homebrew may arrive. or await getting the old one reflashed on another pc maybe or a proper programmer

you did have a flashrom and not a eeprom homebrew as the later can't be reflashed by evox ?

also a cheap lpc mod may be a better option to have fitted perhaps

if you in Aus then you contacted OZXMODS or whatever - think they down your way and they do the X-RAY 3 a kinda homebrew mod

But think the best thing to do is seek some professional help before you steam in again as you seem to have had some bad luck indeed with ya mod-flash and now the uniflash

Your PC n Xbrick and dead yet but just take a step back and ask around n see if someone lacal can help/assist you in getting ya pc up n running
& after ya xbox h/d has been re-done you can then have the options again of a homebrew/lpc or tsop flash - a D6 mod "may" succeed in booting ya xbox in it's present state but think the dash/date problem is best sorted out first

best of luck - if I can help I will try but way over the other side in UK

p.s. i couldnt have put it in upside down because it is a plcc chip or somtheing like that and on of the corners is cut off!
so it doesn't go in all the way. (still i probably mashed it in reel good)
