More Hyperspin Skins & Other Work in Progress

Originally, I had planned to have a 12 pack ready in time for Christmas. Unfortunately, real life issues got in the way and this pack will only contain 10 skins in their beta stage. Likklebaer's work with the Hyperspin art was the original inspiration. Likklebaer, Thank you for making such great skins and sharing them with the community. In return, I have attempted to create both skins for systems that were not in the pack and to provide some alternate skins for existing ones. Also, there are 3 experimental skins that may see future expanded releases for other emulators based upon user feedback. Most skins have basic animations such as logo's that  move into place. Finally, each skin has remixed background music inspired by the system or a key game for it. All of the skins are in a working beta stage, so there may be some slight issues here and there. Any feedback regarding these would be appreciated so that I can get them included in the eventual update. They are created in 640 x 480 format and look great on my 720 setup, but they have not been tested on SDTV.

This skin uses the Hyperspin artwork, but instead of a PC Engine theme, it uses the U.S. TurboGrafx-16 system, color scheme, and character art.

This skin is identical to Likklebaer's except for the addition of a Streets of Rage II inspired mix and the change from a Mark II Megadrive to the old school version. Any other version of a Genesis is blasphemy. Maybe I'm getting too old, but I played on a rectangular Genesis, and a gray not an orange colored NES. And don't get me started on proper Intellivision and Atari systems.

This skin uses the alternate Hyperspin art. Instead of a black and maroon based theme on the system itself, this one uses the white packaging.

The Atari Lynx...aka...THE BOAT. I had so many problems just trying to scale and crop this thing so that it would appear in the emulator skin and not be the entire width of the screen. Seriously, how were you supposed to sneak this thing into class? Maybe the point was to carry it so that you could beat the kid who had a Game Boy and take their system.

Amstrad CPC skin based on Hyperspin graphics.

My camera work does not do this Atari ST skin justice. It looks amazing in person.

The next three skins are all experiments.

I call this "ATARI IS HOT!" Again my camera work does not capture the awesomeness of this skin. The colors are much more vibrant in person resulting IMHO the BEST Atari skin ever made. At the very least I dare you to find one hotter.

The Hyperspin art for DOS leaves a lot to be desired. I felt that it did not capture the spirit of using any of the old AT/XT/286/386/486 computers that I so fondly remember. I decided to go in a completely different direction and use ANSI art. It is "a computer artform that was widely used at one time on BBSes. It is similar to ASCII art, but constructed from a larger set of 256 letters, numbers, and symbols." (Thanks Wikipedia). Good ANSI art is painstakingly created and the beauty of it is similar to writing the Lord's prayer on a grain of rice. This skin is in very, very early beta and should be considered a functional mock up whose only purpose is to gather feedback from the community.

Finally we come to the last and potentially most important skin. I was messing around on the net when I stumbled across some old Sears catalog scans, particularly ones involving video games. Looking at these catalog pages took me back a bit, and that's when it hit me. I'm playing retro games on my Xbox, but I don't have a retro skin to play on. I thought wouldn't it be cool to make a skin that looks like an old catalog page! 15 minutes later the first rough mock up was completed to be shared with the world. It was quick work and I know the main screen aspect ratio is wrong, but I really think this could be a cool idea for an emulator skin pack. There are catalog images for everything from Atari 2600 to the SNES! The one pictured is from the 1991 Sears catalog and its fun to see Sonic the Hedgehog listed as a "new" product. And that arcade stick...I'd love to have a pair of those to go with my setup now. I think this could be a very cool project and I could use help with locating scans of catalogs from1977 to present!

Well that's certainly saved me some work on a few systems. As I've said I was only making skins for my own use and these are definitely good enough for me.

(Not sure about the giant font on the alternate SMS skin though)

I hated that SMS Game Select screen right after I uploaded the pic (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) I was trying to do something different, but as noted... it just didn't work. Here is an update.

Very nice, thanks. I especially like the Atari ST, 2600 & MS-Dos skin. Good idea to use ANSI art.

But you should go for the Amiga, man.wink.gif

Sweet....

I really gotta spend a day or so getting all of these great skins that made it out in the last few months.  Gotta have them all ready for release.

So.... who's going to make Hyperspin skins that are dual preview and dynamic?

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/love.gif) thank you for producing such loveable skins for all these less popular machines, Especially Amstrad & AtariST.

+yes, the MD skin is awesome id, to see the preview through a pape catalog or vintage review, this works better on 16/9 though.

Glad you can now show all of your friends that Atari is HOT  biggrin.gif

Lately, I have been trying to finish up the Intellivision Xtras pack. I am at 99% for videos, covers, overlays, and screens. At this point I am just waiting for madmab's update to BlissX before I begin testing.

However, before I began this project I did make an update to the Retro Genesis Catalog Skin. It is similar to the previous version, only this one is much more polished and provides a cleaner look on screen. In the future I plan on making skins for all of the retro systems that I have catalog scans for. I would also like to experiment with making the skin dynamic, but I first wanted to get a regular working prototype out there.
