Cospefogo is the great specialist of this question, soi'll send you the link to his excellent tutorial:
old school graphics for xbox emusthis tutorial is my holly bible and Cospefogo oppened my eyes like a gourou (IMG:

example, you want to play the nes looking for the most accuracy and fidelity possible to reproduce the original graphics and resolutions.
-No, the xbox can't display nativelly 256*224(nes resolution)
-the best way to reproduce the original graphics and resolutions is:
1)a standard TV(I have myself a HDTV, but for the low resolution , standard tv is better)if you are playing emus on hdtv, you have to activate filter such as advance mame2* the best filter in my opinion
2)double size the resolution (512*448) on a standard tv, desactivate all the filters, flicker filter =0
and you will have the feeling to play the original nes
3) i prefer to play emus on a standard tv (IMG:

style_emoticons/default/comp.gif) , because low resolution is better on a standard tv
(double sized resolution to be exact)
4)in fact there is an option, when i will release the futures dynamic skins for the systems like nes, genesis, etc...,because it is hard to remember the systems originals resolutions
i will save the good pixels ratio settings in the settings.ini of the skin, so when you will launch a dynamic skin, you will know you'll have the correct aspect ratio by (default);640*448 screen for the most accuracy genesis screen for example
