Using Ps2 Pad On Xbox
« on: April 03, 2008, 10:27:00 PM »

Ok, here's the situation. I have a PS2 Saturn pad which I'd like to use for, well, pretty much every game I play.

Will it be possible to use PS2 -> Xbox converter to play games with the pad on Xbox, then also use Xbox -> USB cable to use the pad on PC? That would make a long chain sausage of converters (but my uninformed guess is that Xbox->USB adapter doesn't really add more lag because it's the same interface. Correct me if I'm wrong).

I don't really see why not but wanted to double check. If you can confirm/deny, enlighten me  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Dude,

What is the type of connection in your Saturn Pad for PS2?
Is it USB or it uses the PS2 controller port?

If you have the (in)famous Saturn Pad for PS2 (which uses a Playstation controller port to connect)
you SHOULD use it in any PS2toXBOX adapter. I have the ones available from Play-Asia and they
work like a charm.

All I use in my Xbox are PS2/PSX pads and HORI Arcades.

But, if your Saturn Pad for PS2 uses USB interface, you are fried, because
Xbox DOES NOT support USB controllers, does not matter which brand or style
(SNES thru adapaters, PC usb, etc etc).

I have been searching for this controller FOR MY WHOLE LIFE and never found one.
But I need it to be PS2 port oriented, and NOT USB.

In the end, after a exhaustive search, I was able to find the Magic Joybox Adpater,
a very rare device who converts SATURN/DREAMCAST/PS-ONE to Xbox.
Man, it was expensive... I did buy it second hand from a damn mercenary!  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)

Well, if in any occasion you get the idea of SELLING you Saturn/PS2 pad, contact me.
I am the first in the queue, ok?

Best regards,
Cospefogo.

Hi Cospefogo. Thanks for the reply.

Yeah, the pad is made for PS2, using the huge PS2 port. I've been playing PS2 games with it and PC games as well using PS2->USB adapter, until it recently died (it was Trio Linker Plus).

And yeah, the pad is pretty rare. I was lucky to get it new relatively cheap (around $30) last year, but ever since then I have never seen one on sale. They've long been out of production and all.

I use it for all shmups and fighting games I play so I'd probably keep it until it breaks (unless I happen to find a new one in some extremely unlikely case). Thanks for the offer  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif)

Could you tell me the name of your PS2->Xbox converter? I've seen way too many bad converters in my life and wanna get as much info as possible before purchase, especially since I plan to use it for dance pad as well.

Thanks

Hey man!

This is the adapter:
http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-13-71-gm-49-en-70-1fo.html

And if you check the comments, there is someone saying
it works flawlessly with the Saturn_PS2 pad!

Wow!!!
Grab one faster!

Sounds good. Hopefully it works well with dance pad as well but that's not my priority anyway.

Thanks for the info!

Cospefogo was right about  changing the adapter. I received a new one from Mayflash recently and now my stick is recognized as both a digital and arcade pad. So that it works with any software on xbox including xport emus.

The guy who's reporting that his saturn pad works flawlessly is lying out his ass.

YOU SHOULD READ BETTER before calling others as liars.
I was reporting that my official SEGA SATURN PAD for PS2 (with PS2 connector) works perfectly on the Mayflash PS2/PS2 adpater.

Thanks for your understanding,
Cospefogo.

Just read this comment on the X-Joybox converter:

QUOTE
The PS2's DualShock 2 works, but you'll often have to press the buttons extra hard to register a press.

Is this true?

Yes it's true.

The ps2 controllers are pressure sensitive and built especially for the ps2.  For example if you're playing Gran Tourismo and you depress the button to speed up, the harder you press the faster you will go.

If you're using a ps2 controller with the xbox you'll have to press extra hard to register a press as the xbox lacks the ability to communicate with the ps2 controller's pressure sensitivity.

So for the xbox the psx conrollers are the best to use as they lack the pressure sensitivity and work just like any other xbox controller.

Granted you'll still need an ps2 to xbox adapter.

Ok Cosp, you're right and I'm wrong.

I should have read it more closely and noticed you were referring to the ultra rare Saturn Ps2 pad as you stated and not a regular Saturn Pad.  Guess I got excited and missed that part.

For using a PS pad without the pressure issue get a Dual Shock 1 or a PSOne gamepad, it's what I use and they work 100% perfect, they're better than PS2 gamepads anyway since Sony dropped the built quality of the controllers for the PS2, specially with the analog sticks.

I like the DS1 so much that I even play Halo and CoD with it, miles better than a S pad, switching guns and other face button functions are much quicker to do since it's instant. The only problem is with the digital triggers with racing games but for that I use the Logitech gamepad.

For emulators it works good too, been playing Bomberman games and SM3 with no issues.

Even if the Dual Shock is far from perfect it's a good alternative for the official MS controllers and they're much cheaper than a S pad that's for sure.

Isn't that the case with most controllers, though? In Super Mario Bros., the harder you press the A button, the higher he jumps.

No, that's down to how long you hold the button. As opposed to how hard you press it.

Note that the A/B/X/Y/white/black buttons on the X-Box controller are all pressure sensitive as well, same as the PS2 buttons (but not to the extent of the X-Box triggers). So the lack of compatibility is really a problem with the adapter.

I have tried the PS2 controller with the X Joy Box just a couple of days ago. I pressed the buttons very lightly and still it registers every press without a problem. Pressure sensitive my ass.
