I'm Rediculously Confused - Street Fighter
« on: January 22, 2008, 07:15:00 PM »

There are just so many mame versions and no clear documentation found on what they are for, or which has the best compatibility. I'll try to put everything simply. I want to get into the Street Fighter Series, I've never really played them (when I was a kid I played Mortal Kombat II to death). With so many different mames, and so many different street fighters I'm feeling overwhelmed. First off I want to ask what game would be a good intro to the series? It sounds like Hyper Street Fighter II would probably be my best bet, and it sounds like there is an actual mame version of this too? If I decide to get that version of mame would it run other street fighters well, say III and the alpha series? If it does run those well which games should I choose from those series? Sorry I know this is a lot of questions, but I really appreciate the patience. Thanks a lot!

PS Edit: Also were does the Capcom vs SNK series fit in, is it technically a street fighter game? and can it be played on xbox?

This is the best way to get into the Street Fighter series. (you don't have to play every game to death though)

Street Fighter II : omg its SF2!! wait a minute i never even played SF1.. was there even a SF1?
(i know there's a sf1, but back when i was 14 i didn't know that)
aah who cares, this game is great! i wish i could play with the bosses though..
this game runs fine on mame and fba-xxx

Street Fighter II Champion Edition : whoohooo its SF2 but with the bosses enabled!!
whoohooo.. now if only the speed was faster :/
this game runs fine on mame and fba-xxx

Street Fighter 2 Turbo : whoohooo everything is faster and the SF portraits look more mature now!
colors have been fucked up though..
this game runs fine on mame and fba-xxx

Super Street Fighter 2 : omg super excellent Ryu Intro! this is amazing for 1993!
now if only they would fix some small little things and add a super secret end boss that can only be fought by never getting defeated until you reach Bison!!
(play this one a little, the next one is pretty much the same but better, so play a little or at least look at the intro once)
this game runs fine on mame and fba-xxx

Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo : OMG NEW INTRO AND ITS SUPER SF2 BUT BETTER!!
this game runs fine on mame and fba-xxx

Street Fighter the Movie : omg its digitized SF2.. wait a minute this is crap.. eeeew WHY GOD WHYYYYYY?
this game runs fine on mame and perhaps fba-xxx?

Street Fighter Alpha : wow new art style and its kind of an remake of the first SF, this is pretty good!
this game runs fine on mame and fba-xxx

Street Fighter Alpha 2 : hmmm new characters, new backgrounds.. yeah pretty good (some might argue that its better then alpha 3)
this game runs fine on mame and fba-xxx

Street Fighter Alpha 3 : wow this is like Super Alpha Turbo 2 or something, awesome end battle too.
(note that the ps1 and DC versions have more characters)
this game runs fine on mame and fba-xxx

Street Fighter 3 : OMG AWESOME ANIMATION, SO FLUID AND.. and.. its just not as much fun as SF2 was :/
(also there's like 3 versions of this, start with the first one and work your way to the last one, they just add new backgrounds and players)
get the cps3 emulator from xbins to run this game.

if you follow that route you can say that you kinda experienced the SF experience like the people who were into it from the beginning experienced it.

Then there's the countless SF2 hacks like rainbow edition and all that stuff but its not part of the real series,
and then there's Super Turbo Hyper Anniversary but that is pretty much SuperSF2Turbo with the option to choose which style
you want to fight as (classic sf2, turbo, super, etc) But i don't know if this has been emulated yet,
i think it is but i'm not sure if the xbox runs it via emulation, though if you really want to play this you can buy the game in the store,
its called Street Fighter II Anniversary or something.

what else.. what else..

oh yeah SF1, I wouldn't bother, i heard it runs like crap or doesn't even run at all.
(emulation needs more memory then the xbox has or something)

ehm what else..

oh yeah Capcom Vs SNK 1 & 2, last time i checked the story in this is not cannon to the SF story so i if thats what you want don't play this,
they are good games though, especially fun if you understand who's who on both sides. (so make sure you played alot of Capcom & SNK games before playing this)
because the entire idea of the game is that you get to put 2 companies against eachother, and whats more fun then beating the characters of your non favorite company?
the first game can be run with a ps1 emulator, the 2nd has a real game on the xbox, but no emulators for either of them.

what else what else..

oh yeah SNK Vs Capcom Chaos : yeah.. as an SNK lover i really didn't like this game, SNK really threw this one together rather quickly and without love.
Storywise its pretty much.. a dream or something, there's not really an explanation. not that it matters, the game is crap and only fun
to play to see how the Capcom characters look in SNK KOF style.
this game runs fine on mame and fba-xxx

there ya go, follow that list and you'll experience SF2 how i experienced it.

edited it a bit, i was clearly high when i wrote it.

I wouldn't really call myself a Street Fighter fan, but i did like it allot back in the day, (92-95)
sadly real life issues made stop focusing on gaming around 96 and onward, so i didn't really got into the alpha games (apart from alpha3 on psx and later on DC)
but yeah i really liked what they did with it, too bad Capcom stopped putting effort in their games later on.
(i mean come on i just played some Capcom Vs SNK 2 and damn that shit looks bad, 3D and low res sprites don't mix)

but the classic SF2 and Alpha games will always have a place in my heart.

Hate to burst your bubble but this game does not run fine. It runs very slow and choppy, as well as having the audio duplicate every sound. I do not have the 128 upgrade and this might be the reason why.

My bad! Since the other SF's all run fine i wrongly assumed that the movie game also ran correctly.
*comment about the game being stupid*
