I know this has been addressed again and again, but I still cannot get the emulator to pull up a ROM list.

I have a soft modded xbox.
Surreal64 is in E:\apps\emu\surreal64
ROMS are in E:\apps\emu\surreal64\roms

My surreal.ini has had the media directory erased and it has been erased at the file level (as per another post I read to get the roms up). I have my rom folder in the surreal.ini set to E:\apps\emu\surreal64\roms. All of my ROMS have .z64 extensions.

If anyone could shed some light on what Im doing wrong I would be greatly appreciative.

I dont know what could be causing your problem but I thought I would make a suggestion thats unrelated.  If you zip all your rom files before you transfer them over it will save you about half the space on your hard drive.  Surreal64 can read .z64 files so that shouldnt be the problem but maybe try zipping them anyway and see if it helps.  It couldnt hurt and if nothing else you saved some hard drive space.

Everything your saying suggests that you shouldn't have a problem.  This stuff happens from time to time though.  Weird problems I've had in the past that nobody else could figure out.  Sometimes you just got to start over.

I suggest deleting everything for this emulator... the emu, the saves in E:\, and anything in the T and U data folders.

Get a fresh copy of the emu and FTP it over again.

Kind of a pain I know, because you have all of your roms in the "roms" folder in the emulator directory.  That's why I seperated all of my roms from my emulators.  My roms for Surreal are in "F:\Roms\Nintendo\N64".  Where you have them shouldn't matter though as far as the emu is concerned as long as your .ini file is pointing to the right place.

What is your free space on your drive?  Since you've got this all on your E:\ drive I'm assuming you didn't put in a bigger hard drive.  You might be suffering from weird problems due to space issues.   You should never get anywhere near max capacity on your E:\ drive or all sorts of weird things start happening.  Most N64 games don't work very well anyhow, so I suggest just putting on a few you would like to try and deleting the rest.  (There is a compatibility thread on the Surreal in here to help you decide which ones you'd like to put on the XBox).  Mario 64 and Mario Kart 64 pretty much work flawlessly, so you could delete everything else and try those for testing first.

RMM's suggestion for zipping your N64 roms is also is a great idea if you didn't upgrade the hard drive.  You need all the space you can get.  Be sure to zip them in .zip format in Winzip though.  Surreal won't read them in .rar or 7-zip files.

Good luck.

Thanks for the suggestions. I shouldnt be at capacity for my hard drive. I havent upgraded it, but I dont have anything but software on there. All of my media content is located in a NAS.

I will try a fresh install this weekend and let everyone know how it goes.

Thanks

Hey thanks pilloughtalk. I think that was half the battle.

For anyone reading this post, here is how I got it to work (I am running a standard xbox hard drive w/ a soft hack):

I deleted the Surreal64 folder and the associated folders (entire folders, I suggest copying them to your computer for backup purposes if this dosent work for you) in UDATA and TDATA. They are the ones that are a... 64... ahh I dont know off the top of my head, but they have and a and 64 in there... it was the only one with 64 in the name in my folders. I deleted the complete folders.

I got a fresh new release from the "usual" place and re-installed.

I did not edit the .ini file... it says that the folder the roms should be in is D:/Roms (mine is actually located in E:/ and i still left the .ini as it came)... leave it and dont run Surreal64. I think that this may be important. I placed all of my Roms in a 'roms' folder at root in the Surreal64 folder.

Open Surreal64 and click on the refresh button at the bottom right of the screen.

BAM!!! It works!
