Mameox128 - Working Romset Project

UPDATE:  I skipped over the letters S and T for the time being and finished the alphabet.  With only the letters S and T left that leaves roughly 1,300 roms left to check, minus all the clones and the roms included in MAMEdox Arcades.

NEW QUESTIONS:

1. Do you think BritneysPAIRS will consider adding roms still?  I'm reading through the thread on the other site and sometimes I think he'd be open to working on this some more and other times I get the feeling like he's moving on.

2.  Most of the games that I am going to suggest adding are a few classic games from the 70's and mostly early to mid-eighties that have been neglected.  I realize a lot of you guys are younger than me and might not want anything but the most popular games from that time like the Pac-Mans and the Galagas but I do believe there is room for these other roms if put under a seperate category or two such as "Classics" or "Retro Games".   My assumption here is that any of these retro games that work without any problems on MAMEox128 Plus wouldn't have any problems on MAMEdox Arcades and should just require a quick add and test on BS's part (or his people).  There are a limited few that could use a controller mapping update, and I have added those suggestions on my list when I've come across them too.  Any games that have no sound I have listed as such and if they are not just complete ripoffs of other games and are worth adding, I've marked as well and will ask if there is a way to get them working with sound like he has done for other games before.

So here's my second question:  I've seen him ask when others suggest games if it works on MAMEox128, if it works on HK$'s build, or if it works on Platinum in different posts.  I'm not going to test these games twice, as this is taking forever and I'm not in the mood at the moment to manually add all of these games to Arcades for testing after having tested them all on MAME0x128.  Do you think he will add the more primitive games that I've tested as working flawlessly on MAMEox128?

Thanks again....

BTW... I'm under 1,000 games that still need testing.  That's a little over 4/5ths of the way there.

well for your first question-he will still add roms, ive been trying out some, just transferring roms from mameox 128 to arcades with unleash file explorer.he did say to me in one his posts as long as its playable and a good suggestion then he would look at it.
2nd question-the reason he asked if it worked on hk$ biuld is because, some people werent using mamedox at the time when the roms were getting suggested.i dont know about the really older games you spoke about but i dont see why not,out of all the 100 added roms that were added to arcades, most of them were my suggestions, all i did was go to a site called system 16 and went through all the different arcade hardware and games that were compatible with the hardware and i just tried them on mameox 128 plus.if they were playable then especially with the type of game it was 2d,3d then you knew it would work on mamedox.the games i chose wasnt nesseciraly games that i would play myself but games that other people would enjoy playing so i stuck with games from about 1988-2000.
at the end of the day he has the final say of what goes in but you can only try.

ps a game you have to try on mame dox arcades or mameox, its called dyna gears a brilliant 2d side scroller romp with a bit of humour thrown in. cool.gif

Well I've seen you over there on the other site then if it's you that's made all of those suggestions.   biggrin.gif

I signed up there but I haven't posted yet.   Actually, I'm unable to use my home email at work and I forgot to verify my membership when I got home after work so here I am.  I can't log in until I verify the membership.  When I do, my name will be the same over there as it is here.

The reason I asked about the HK$ stuff is because from what I've gathered on the internet, MAMEox128 Plus is an HK$ emulator as well.  Is this incorrect?

A lot of the games that I'd suggest may not be the most popular, particularly with the younger crowd, but I don't see any reason to limit this great emulator and what it can offer everybody because of one person's preferences.  I think it's a great idea to purge all dupes and games that just won't work, or have no sound, or are pure shit (such as the quiz games that you can't even answer right because you have no clue which button on the gamepad corrosponds to which letter answer).  But to offer such a great emulator and then limit it because of personal preferences is a shame.  This single emulator should be the only MAME emulator on our XBoxes and the only major arcade emulator that accompanies FBA-XXX Pro.  I consider my XBox a museum of video games and although because of the limit of a .84 MAME core we can't have every old game that the XBox should handle, I really do believe that we should put every game that works on this emulator so we have one central location for all of them.

You'd be suprised how many of those older games you've never heard of before were really fun, and quite addictive like Pac-Man was.  I'm actually kind of shocked that he didn't add "Eyes" or "Mappy" (Actually, I can't remember if he did have Mappy, but I'm pretty sure that he didn't and that struck me as odd, because that's almost as classic as Pac-Man and definately at least as memorable as Crystal Castles).

Here's how I propose we do it....  I think that a seperate category for the lesser known retro games is the way to go.  If it's really a hang-up for him to have games he deems unworthy of playing because of their age cluttering the list when you're viewing the FULL list of games, maybe a solution would be to totally seperate the retro games somehow so they don't even show up on the full list and they're only viewable when you select the "Retro" category.  My knowledge of programming is pretty basic, and I don't know about programming for the XBox at all, but I would think that something like that could be accomplished pretty easily.

So here would be my reasons why adding those games shoudln't be much of a problem or put anybody out:

1.  Make a seperate category for Retro games where they are only viewable if you're looking at that category.  Make it so these games don't ever show up with all the other games in the "Full" list.  (Although I would suggest a few games like the aforementioned "Eyes" and "Mappy" make it to the main list.

2.  These games would take up almost no space on your hard drive so they would require very little time for people to download and add when the next version comes out.

3.  Adding these games that I've tested as working on MAMEox128 Plus to MAMEdox Arcades should be almost no work at all.  There are a few that could stand to be remapped, and I will list those games together in their own category when I present them, but other than that it should just be a matter of BritneysPAIRS checking to his satisfaction that the rom works and then adding it to the emulator.

Again... I will be bringing this to him sometime this month when I get everything together in a presentable fashion.  I don't want to bother him right now with a half-assed idea though.  Although I wouldn't be opposed if somebody were to give him wind that somebody were putting a list like this together.

And I'll have to give that Dyna Gears a try.  I'm sure that I skipped it if it was available on MAMEdox Arcades because I haven't bothered testing any of the games he has on there after I got a hold of his compatibility list.

yes mameox128plus is an hk$ emulator, its his own biuld of mameox.
mamedox is britneyspairs version, but hk$ and ebsay all helped with mamedox, but britneyspairs is the only one now who is doing anything with mame.pity really some more updates would be great but the new core after .84 is supposed to be very difficult to work for xbox, some have tried.

Okay.... as long as I know that I'm testing on an emulator that he would want me to be testing on before I brought it to him that it's cool.  That's what I wanted to know.

I can't remember who asked me for Shumps and Fighters that actually work to try out.  I think it was you Xyteam....

Here's the ones I've found so far..... actually isn't much considering how many roms I've gone through.  BritneysPAIRS really did do quite a job it seems adding most of the newer worthwhile games on his emu.  Like I said, most of the ones that I want to add that work are earlier ones that weren't as popular as Pac-Man and Galaga.

Sorry the list is a mess.  It took me about a 10 minutes to find all the SHUMPS and Fighters and put them together, and I'm going to do this all over again when I do the whole list, so no reason half-assing it now.  I didn't feel like getting all into formatting.  The zipfile name is right next to the title, before the "Y".

SHUMPS:

Argus      argus   Y      N      Old school SHUMP
Armed Formation      armedf   Y      N      Old school SHUMP
Astro Fighter (set 1)      astrof   Y      N   No sound, but probably didn't have any.  Game made in 1979.     Can we add this?   Very oldschool SHUMP.  Almost galaxian like.
Cosmos      cosmos   Y   cvs   N      Classic game.   One of the original SHUMPS
Dr. Toppel's Adventure   (US)   drtopplu   Y   drtoppel   N      Oldschool SHUMP   Need to transfer good romset.   NO GOOD DUMP KNOWN.  Seems to play fine though.
Heavy Metal      hvymetal   Y      N      Classic semi-SHUMP game
Equites      equites   Y      Y      Classic SHUMP
Espial   (US?)   espial   Y      N      Classic SHUMP
Finalizer:  Super Transformation      finalizr   Y      N      Classic SHUMP
Fire Battle      firebatl   Y      N      Classic SHUMP
Fire Hawk      firehawk   Y      Y      Classic SHUMP
Funky Bee      funkybee   Y      N      Classic SHUMP
Galaxy Gunners      galaxygn   Y      N      Classic SHUMP
Gulf Storm      gulfstrm   Y      Y      Classic SHUMP
Gyrodine      gyrodine   Y      N      Classic SHUMP
HAL21      hal21   Y      N      Classic SHUMP
Halley's Comet   (US)   halleys   Y      N      Classic SHUMP
Lethal Thunder   (World)   lethalth   Y      N      SHUMP
Liberation      liberate   Y      N      Classic SHUMP
Metal Soldier Isaac II      msisaac   Y      N      Classic SHUMP type game.   NO GOOD DUMP KNOWN.  Seems to play fine though.
Mission 660 (US)      m660   Y      N      Classic SHUMP type game.
Pollux (set 1)      pollux   Y      N      Classic SHUMP
Radical Radial      radrad   Y      N      Classic SHUMP
Rafflesia      raflesia   Y      N      Classic SHUMP
S.S. Mission      ssmissin   Y      N      SHUMP
S.R.D. Mission      srdmissn   Y      N      Classic SHUMP
XX Mission      xxmissio   Y      N      Classic SHUMP
Wonder Planet (Japan)      wndrplnt   Y      N      Classic SHUMP
Zaviga      zaviga   Y      N      Classic SHUMP
Zodiack      zodiack   Y      N      Classic SHUMP

FIGHTERS:

Blandia      blandia   Y      N      Classic Fighter.   Like Street Fighter.
Cyberbots:  Fullmetal Madness   (US 950424)   cybotsu   Y   cybots   N      Like Street Fighter.   Need to transfer good romset.
Far East of Eden:  Kauki Klash / Tengai Makyou:  Shin Den      kabukiki   Y   neogeo   N      Street Fighter type game.
Karnov's Revenge / Fighter's History Dynamite      karnovr   Y   neogeo   N      Street Fighter type game.
Mutant Fighter (World Rev 4, EM-5)      mutantf   Y      N      Fighting game.   Like Street Fighter
Metal Clash (Japan)      metlclsh   Y      N      Japanese fighter/platform.   Think early 2D version of King of Monsters.
Ragnagard / Shin-Oh-Ken      ragnagrd   Y   neogeo   N      Like Street Fighter
Real Bout Fatal Fury / Real Bout Garou Densetsu      rbff1   Y   neogeo   N      Like Street Fighter   This game is different than the Real Bout Fatal Fury Special which is already included in Arcades.
Waku Waku 7      wakuwak7   Y   neogeo   N      Street Fighter type game.  It is in english.

FYI... if you were curious from the list the columns in the spreadsheet were:

Title, Version (if there was one), romname, Works (Y/N), Clone name (if there is one), Favorite (Y/N), Notes 1, Notes 2, Notes 3

I changed how I did it quite a bit through while making the list when I decided another way was easier.  I plan on cleaning it all up when I'm done though.  At some points the Title and Version are in the first column, and in other parts they are seperated in the first two columns.  I will remove the "Working (Y/N) because the color already does that now, the "Favorites" isn't always accurate, because I forgot a lot of the time to change the "N" to a "Y", and the way I described different types of games changed throughout.  I plan on changing one of the description columns into a "Category" column to make categorizing the games easy for BritneysPAIRS too.

Hope you like the games.  Most of the Shumps are really old school.  Some of the fighters are too, but I think most of others are newer.  (Just so you know, I didn't play any of these all the way through or anything.  I usually played one level through or died all my times and went to the next rom.

Greetings ressurectionx!

If you're going to directly communicate with Britney on adding some games to his Arcade simulator, I've got a few I wouldn't mind you requesting on my behalf.

Hard Drivin'.  I think this probably was my favorite game from childhood.  Is it even possible to play using a standard controller?

Shuffleshot.  Great Multiplayer game.  It uses a track ball so I'm also not sure if this is possible to playing using an original controller.

Star Castle.  Not much of a game, but it was fun and I was also pretty good at it back in the day.  smile.gif

Puzzle de Bowling.  Great puzzle game.  My wife loves it.  It's really cute and fun to play with others.

The Trivial Pursuit series.  Again, just a good time when playing with friends.

Just thought you'd like a little feedback on this.

If not, oh well, then I wasted your time.  smile.gif

Good luck with your current project.  I'm surprised you haven't snapped by playing so many of those turds so far.

I just finished the letter T.  I'll be doing the last letter which is S now.  Only 700+ roms left to go.

Hey Xyteam,

Just wanted to let you know that Blasteroids was the Asteroids update I was thinking about from when I was a kid.  I also found the one I believed was called Dogfight.  It's called "Two Tigers".  It's a really cool old game.  It's like an updated Dogfight where the downed planes are used to try to sink a battleship thats below you in the water.  I got confused because if two people played they could either do it cooperatively or do a Dogfight.

I also figured out why my UI options weren't working before I reinstalled MAME.  I must have remapped the UI Options buttons to something that I'd never hit again on accident.  It happened again when my brother and I were playing 2 players and he pressed back on the 2nd controller while I was in the UI options, so every time he hit B the UI options would come up.  Now that all makes sense.....

Hey Smothermunchie,

Thanks for the suggestions.  I am pretty much asking him to add any game that works without flaws.

Hard Drivin'. - I loved this game too.  Played it with my brothers all the time. That's why I'm bummed it doesn't work.  It's really really slow.  I know that he had a few games working on his emulator that I had marked down as too slow, so there's always hope.  I planned on asking him about this one.  I don't have a lot of faith, but anything is possible.

Shuffleshot. - This was made in '97.  Most roms this new just don't work.  In fact this one says "PROMO BATTERY RAM FAILURE, BATTERY BACKUP FAILURE" and then says "Press start to continue".  After pressing start it hangs for a minute and then begins and runs very slow and echos.  I'm not even sure if the trackball works with the joystick because it takes way too long to get a game started.  Probably no chance of this getting added.

Star Castle.  - I don't belive this one is correctly emulated, but I could be wrong though.  My screenshot shows it in color, but all the versions on MAMEox128 are black and white.  There is also no sound.  Not sure if that's how it was supposed to be but I can ask if he can do anything about it.

Puzzle de Bowling. - I never played this one besides testing it before.  It does play a bit slow and BritneysPAIRS won't add any games that suffer any slowdown or any sound skipping.  I can ask if there's anything that can be done about it.

The Trivial Pursuit series. - Have you tried playing this one on the XBox at all with MAMEox128?  it's tough because you don't know which button to press for what answer.  I'm assuming hte machines this was on had different color buttons to answer the questions.  I suppose it could be remapped to the colors of the XBox controller if they match and BritneysPAIRS wants to make the effort though.

That's a tough list you picked there man.  I don't have a lot of hope for much of it.  You could always try playing the slow ones with the sound emulation turned off in MAMEox128 and see if that works for you.  Bummer with no sound though.

My secret to not snapping from all this is plenty of booze. That, and I grew up with a lot of these games.   cool.gif

good work ressurect

ive been looking to do something like this for ages - but well you know.

ive downloaded the dat file and have the 2424 roms for the dat.  ill be testing them in my spare xbox to see if they all run dandy on BP arcades - i know from speaking to him he is averse to people adding roms to his perfect emulator, for obvious reasons - mainly stupid forum posts etc.

but im prepared to give some of my time to see if there are any more decent roms to add.

you may well see a package with new roms, screenshots and rom classes (shumps, 1v1fighter etc)

good work

Hey bulge2,

Which datfile did you download?

I'm hoping that he will add these, as I've taken a lot of time to test them out and they do work.  Even if he doesn't add them, I will add them myself.  I was just hoping that he'd add the old roms and put them in a separate category that was not part of the main romlist and was only viewable if you were looking at the old rom category.  I know what you mean by stupid forum posts, but this will be very well presented when I'm done. That's why I didn't go to him about it yet because I didn't want to half-ass it and get a no because it wasn't organized.

Like I said before, he did do a very good job adding most of the newer roms that work.  There's not a whole lot of newer games left that work.  A majority of the roms I'm requesting are the older ones that were probably before his time, but should be added for anyone older who used to play them.

Hey, Xyteam,

Yeah.... I probably didn't play that one until '88, but it's an old one.  My first arcade was "Frenzy", so that should give you an idea of just how old I like the games.  Yeah, I've noticed that some roms around '97 work, but more often then not there are issues with them.  At least that's my experience when testing them anyways.  So, that is to say that a majority of the roms from '97 that aren't already on Arcades don't work.

Okay..... I'm done testing games on MAMEox128 Plus.  FINALLY!!!

Now I've got a lot of organizing my information to do.  Not sure how long that will take me, but I will update.  Hopefully I'll have a compatibility list up in the next few days and be well on my way to having a datfile for all working games not in MAMEdox Arcades, that are not clones, that are in English, and that don't show the naughty bits.  Keep ya posted.

The dat file on page 1 is the MAME .84 dat file.  The problem is that even though the Xbox MAME emulators are based on MAME .84 not all of the MAME .84 roms work.  This is the reason why ressurectionx's work is useful.  If you go through all the games in MAME .84 and weed out all the games that dont work then you can create a .dat with a comprehensive list of working games for the Xbox.  No more worrying about trying to play a particular game and have it not work for you.

hargle for his part already did something like this on his own.  He put his working Xbox games .dat file on page 3.  ressurectionx' can take hargle's work and compare it to his own to see if they agree on a working games list.  If there is any disagreement ressurectionx can go back and perhaps see why there may be a disagreement.  It could be as simple as something like a corrupt rom either him or hargle have so its good to have two sets of .dats from two separate people to compare.

Even if BritneyPAIRS doesnt want to add every single working game to MAME Arcades, its still good to have a list of all working games that can be used for Mameox128 or other Xbox MAME emulators so the working games .dat wont go to waste.  It would be nice to have them all in MAME Arcades because BritneyPAIRS has fixed many games that didnt work properly in other MAME Emulators so MAME Arcades could have the best compatibility of all the XBox MAME emulators.  MAME Arcades also has the advantage of best UI.
