Although i still need help and don't want to start a thread on how to do this...I am willing to help out a fellow noob.  To answer your question, I softmodded. Here are a couple of things to check out:

1. <a href="http://www.XS Filter -/html/xbox-tutorials-256.html" target="_blank">http://www.XS Filter -/html/xbox-tutorials-256.html</a> (this is a video of the softmodding process using Softmod Installer deluxe 5)

2. ***NO DIRECT LINKS TO SOFTMOD FILES***(this is a step by step instruction manual on how to softmod and what you need.

Remember to read the instructions or you will mess up your xbox and have to hot swap to fix your xbox which is a pain.

When you enter options you can scroll though different option screens (like audio/video ......... related)
There is also screen where you can edit paths - try to edit them to match your folder where yo have roms
Then hit again - scan for roms (remember - they must be zipped and named properly)

They cannot be packed all in one zip - every ROM must be zipped in its own zip (and it must have proper name )
