Bbc Emulator Starting Soon
« on: August 18, 2007, 04:21:00 AM »

Hi Guys,

In the absence of a BBC Emulator for the XBOX I have decided to take my first dive into XBOX development. To avoid any flamers and haters I want to state that I am in no way saying 1) I am a coding god 2) That this will be a polished build like anything XPORT or NES6502 have produced.

I say this because I am after constructive help from this great community not a load of bulls*"t posts. I remeber seeing NES get loads of abuse when first starting Zsnexbox. Lets try and avoid that this time please. I have all the tools I need and am ready to kick this project off.

Here are my questions:

1) As a lover of the BBC Micro I have been playing my beeb games on my PC for ages. I have always used Beebem and found this to be great emu. I have the source code for this and at the moment am planning to use this as the base for the port. Does anybody have any better suggestions of an emulator to port that might be better than Beebem?

2) NES6502: Once the base work of this emulator is up and running do have any objections if I have a look at your zsnexbox gui and maybe borrow some ideas?

3) Not knowing much about the GPL - am i obliged to release source for such a project as this. Want to try and avoid the crap that is going on with XPORTS disxspectrum and the developer of fuse at the moment.

Looking forward to getting some feedback from you guys!!!!!!

Lets all hope this works out well.

I hear what you are saying - a fully legal binary would be nice but at the moment my  firm decision is to go down the other road.

This is great news.

An acorn electron was my first computer, and i loved many of the games available for it. I dont think beebem plays electron games, but it is just a beefed up version of the same system, so i think many of the same games are available for the beeb (Yay!)

I actually considered trying to port the "electrem" emulator a while back, perhaps i'll still try, lots of free time coming up.

As for suggestions, i'd love to have usb keyboard support, kinda essential i guess.

And the ability to boot with no game loaded for writing programs and what not would be excellent.

Oh! and xports ability to accept custom launch paramaters (For launching games directly from XBMC).... also the ability that when a game has been launched this way, when you exit the game it falls back to the launching app (Source pretty much a copy and paste from xports emu's i'd guess).

Anyway, thanks for this, and good luck.

Also while i'm on about electrem, it's GUI (Classic not future) Is great, simple, functional, elegant and perfect for a tv screen.

thanks for the reply shorty. those kind of features are things I will hopefully look at in the future.

at the moment I am concentrating on getting the basics of the emulator up and running. i am not going to go in all guns blazing and try and get every feature in the first build. The basics of being able to load and play a game with full graphics, sound and input methods are first on the priority list. Next will be to build a useable GUI around it. After that point, nice new features can be added in.

edit:

my dev environment is now setup so let the carnage begin!!!!!!!

NP

Absolutley, one step at a time is the way forward for sure. The games are the main thing, like you said.
Do keep us updated.

Cheers,

just a quick update for you all - progress is being made at a faster rate than I expected.

it's a public holiday this weekend in the UK and the reading festival is calling me. So once I have had my fix of the Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Nine Inch Nails I will be back and should have something to release to you by Wednesday 29th.

thanks guys.

Nope. Steal any ideas and/or code you want.

Look forward to your efforts (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Must be the only outstanding emulator left for the xbox and would be nice to play chuckie egg and Frak again. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)
