New To Xbox...
« on: February 23, 2007, 08:24:00 AM »

Hey all, it's my first post as you can see.  I plan on buying an Xbox sometime soon strictly for NES, SNES, and GBA emulation.  Just to clarify, is SID 4.0 the newest/best way to softmod your xbox?  Also, is EvoX the best dashboard?
Ok, now on to the emulation part of my question.  For the past week, I have been reading on how to softmod you're Xbox and get homebrew apps on them.  From what I understand, once the Xbox is softmodded, you can FTP files over to your Xbox.  Correct me if I'm wrong, but do you put the emulators under C:/?  Also, when you have the emulator there, where do the games go?
And lastly are these the best current emulators for these systems?:
NES- FCEUlatraX V16?
SNES-ZSnexBox V2.99b2?
GBA- XBoyAdvance V17?

Thanks.

In my opinion: most definatly. You can mod your Xbox in 3 minutes with never having to take it apart.

No way. UnleashX or XBMC. But my preference is Unleashx all day long.

No. You will have a C and an E partition. After modding the box, you'll have a few gigs of space to add files to. Don't go below 1GB of free space on E or you will have problems. Personally, I just make a folder on the E partition called "Games" and I add all the emulators, PC ports, homebrew, etc.... to this folder. Then I modify the UnleasX config file to scan this folder and display a list of everything it finds. So when the Xbox boots, I have a list of all the programs. I just pick one and play. If you want a larger hard drive, this will allow the creation of more partitions (like F and G). You can add programs to these partitions and have UnleashX scan them as well.

You also don't have to FTP everything over even though it's the easiest way. You can burn DVDs of all your programs and either run them from the DVDs or copy them from the DVD to your hard drive using the dashboard.

Most emulators have a "roms" folder where you put the games. It really doesn't matter for most emulators because you can browse to any folder on the Xbox to find the games. But most start looking in a folder called roms.

But to answer your question:

NES: Mednafenx-nes - v8
SNES: ZsnexBox 2.99b2
GBA: Xboyadvance - v20

Hey all, it's my first post as you can see.
Welcome!

I plan on buying an Xbox sometime soon strictly for NES, SNES, and GBA emulation.
Just for that? there's so much more good stuff. (mame, genesis, sega cd, scummvm, pc engine, etc)

Just to clarify, is SID 4.0 the newest/best way to softmod your xbox?
We are an emulation board, not a softmod board..

Also, is EvoX the best dashboard?
Evox is the *worst* dashboard, if you want the best you either use UnleashX or Xbox Media Center.

Ok, now on to the emulation part of my question.  For the past week, I have been reading on how to softmod your Xbox and get homebrew apps on them.
Well done, its always a good thing to prepare yourself by reading up on things.

From what I understand, once the Xbox is softmodded, you can FTP files over to your Xbox.
Correct.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but do you put the emulators under C:/?
You can put them wherever you want, everything is configurable,
all in all it really depends on your situation, if you haven't installed a bigger HD you would probably want to
install your emulators on E:\ and if you have installed a bigger HD you can choose to install them on F:\
Personally i installed them on C:\Emulators\

Also, when you have the emulator there, where do the games go?
Wherever you want, everything is configurable,
although most people prefer to make a roms subdir in their emulator dir like like lets say F:\Zsnexbox\roms\
Again personally i have my emu's on C:\ and my roms at F:\Roms\nameofconsole\
but thats just a personal preference.

And lastly are these the best current emulators for these systems?:
NES- FCEUlatraX V16?
SNES-ZSnexBox V2.99b2?
GBA- XBoyAdvance V17?
The big stickied answer thread on top of this forum has many answers, it also links to a thread where we write down the best and current emulators for each system.

if i were you i'd dive into the sticky thread and learn all you can, it always pays off to be prepared,
also make sure you learn how to reach xbins, its where you will find the emulators.
(not the roms though, you'll have to find those yourself.

Thanks.

And in case you were wondering, i use UnleashX as my Dashboard, and XBMC as my media player,
i don't really like xbmc as a dashboard but its an excellent media player.[/b]

I'm still new to this, but I don't think you can ask that question on the forum. All I shall say is....the usual places

drob06 is indeed correct, asking for xbox compiled files is a big nono here,
check the stickied thread for more info regarding xbox compiled files.
