Weird .img Inside The Final Fantasy 9 Disc
« on: January 29, 2007, 02:19:00 PM »

I want to extract the .img inside the first disc of the final fantasy 9 (1st) disc, but its in a weird PS1 format or something. When I try to mount it, either on the disc or saved to my computer, it mounts and then when I try to open it in My Computer it says could not open. Is anyone familiar with this? Is there anyway to get into it?

Okay i have no clue what you're trying to do, because from what i understand you are trying to copy
a file from the ff9 disc 1 to your pc?

why's that? you planning on looking whats inside it or something? maybe for a translation?

how about a screenshot?

Well....it is a playstation game so shouldn't it be in a playstation formatted image? Have you run the image through CDMage to see if there are errors? Maybe that will explain why you can't seem to access the disc through daemon tools/windows explorer...but then again, can you even access data this way. I thought you had to load these images into an iso/image extraction program to extract the data from the image.

if you are trying to extract this FF9.IMG from within the disc,
(IMG:http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b119/irishwhip/ff9.jpg)
you are barking up the wrong tree.
you need to make an image of the entire disc if you want to play it in an emulator.
unless you are trying to extract it for modding purposes or something.

I am trying to get into that .img in the picture, irishwhip. Its purpose is for an experiment with the files inside, but I don't want to spoil it for you guys cus if it works I think anyone who plays PS1 ISO's will be pleasantly suprised with the results.

.IMG are like ISO's, works the same way, is a raw image file, and can be mounted just like an ISO. CDMage couldn't do ANYTHING with it.

True, but I have several ISO's that once mounted cannot be accessed through windows explorer. In fact windows explorer says there is no disc there. Funny that Cd burning programs can read the images fine but Windows can't.

But as a general rule, any image I mount (depending on the game format) can be read just like any normal CD.

For your example, you can extract FF9.img (and any other file from the iso) using CDMage (as well as scan/repair your image if there are errors). You can also re-insert your modification (I think) once you made your changes.

If I understand what you are talking about, then I already did it. I put FF9.img and mounted it into explorer and then took the FF9.img INSIDE IT (the one I want to get into) and copied to my HD. No luck with ANY program so far. Although if you google PS! .img extractor I found this forum (the first result, i think) where a guy found some program that can work with the .img inside a "squaresoft" game (what FF9 is.) I navigated carefully thru the Japanese web pages ( uhh.gif) and eventually downloaded something, but no luck.

Ok. I figured it out. Here's how you do it.

1) Mount the FF9.img file you extracted from the Disck 1 ISO/BIN/IMG etc... (I used daemon tools)
2) Download this program: http://www.h-mkb.com...p;name=PsxMC323
3) Launch this app and choose the virtual drive as the source drive
4) It won't be able to understand the "disc" you have mounted, but will ask you if you want to scan it with any of the installed plugins. And what do you know, one of them in the list is called "FF9"
5) It will scan the vurtual CD and list all the files. You can then watch/extract any or all of them. Lot of interesting stuff in there. For example:

this could get interesting.
one thing you should know is that final fantasy IX has some sort of protection on it. if you mod any files and inject them back into the iso, the game won't work. there was a patch to defeat this protection though, i think you can still get it at megagames.

When I mount the .img it says unable to read TOC from CDROM the drive may not be ready. When I try to open it with the one on my hard drive it says
plug-in which can process a file C:\...  was undetectable.

Maybe I can convert the .img into an iso or bin and it will remove the error?

Oh, and that patch is on this page..I don't have any idea what to do w/ it.

I would directly give you the download, but you guys might have the PAL version.

I used the NTSC version. You don't browse the img with windows explorer. Windows explorer can't read it (nor can any other iso tools out there. But daemon tools can). you also don't need any patch. Everything you need is in the zip of that program allready. All you need is:

1) FF9 Disc 1
2) Daemon tools
3) The program I linked to

Follow my instructions and you'll have the data you want. The entire process will take you no more than 60 seconds from start to finsih and you'll have images like I posted above.

I wasnt talking about explorer I got all that stuff when I used the program in that zip.

And I thought irishwhip said I needed the patch for file changing/modding the files inside the .img
