Wow talk about super bump! I could never figure it out exactly either, as I had certain xbox's that would work fine with my component cables in HD mode, and others that wouldn't. I believe there were issues with certain xbox revisions being goofy. Beyond that though, I believe you should just try using regular composite. I'm sure you've already tried otherwise you wouldn't be asking but I figure I'd throw that out there...
