The Awesome 10x11 Pixel Aspect Ratio In Zsnexbox
« on: October 25, 2006, 06:57:00 AM »

Gentlemen,

Since Zsnexbox 2.98 Nes6502 released a strange and weird feature:
-Added support for 10x11 pixel aspect ratio for the GUI and the emulation

Some guys asked who the heck would like to use something like that,
turning all pixels into a taller retangular shape. Nes6502 replyied that
this feature was requested for someone else.

This morning, after upgrading to Zsnexbox 2.99 I noticed something
very interesting --- as you may see from other posts, I am one
of the neat-nuts guys who search for the best oldskool displaying
(no filters, no blur, correct screen dimensions and so on).

When we use my (and timerever, consoleman and other guys) suggested
coordinates on positioning and screen sizes for a almost perfect native Snes
screen, left and right sides are cropped out of the tv margins. Nes6502 argued
that --- for him --- while checking the Super Mario World main screen --- this loss
it too much, thing that for me is okay.

BUT --- The wonderful solution was right in front our eyes!

Just apply the suggested settings (presented in other topics) and turn
the 10x11 feature ON. Miraculously the screen will fit perfectly (or almost)
on your TV display and you will not be losing anything on right and left sides,
and will be running your Zsnexbox without no distortion horizontally
and vertically.

KUDOS to the person who requested this feature, and double kudos
for Nes6502 for the implementation.

Let's hope that Xport read this topic and add such feature
on MednafenX-NES, NeoGenesis, and so on.

Hurra!
Cospefogo.

Top smart!   (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)
Sounds as if it would also be the answer to Vice64X scaling problems, thank you for that.

Just to clarify, these magical coordinates are:

X: -1,599999
Y: -0.640000

Width: 642.449999
Height: 481.140000

Right? That's all that I could find using the search feature.

Yes,

These are *some* of coordinates that worked fine for me
and few other guys. If the actual X and Y value do not give
you a good positioning on your screen, you can try
you own configurations - but be aware - just by moving the
screen around you distort EVERYTHING AGAIN.

I recommend you to use the game TOYS (E) to check
the horizontal and vertical distortions. Please note it
is note the game ToyStory...

But, before anything else, try with my settings
and turn your 10x11 pixel aspect ratio ON.

Good luck!

you guys are doing good work with this, but i have to ask...are your settings for EVERYONE?

I notice you are using component cables.  what mode are you running the emulators in?

I personally run in either 480p or 720p, no higher, on a Mitsubishi MegaView Pro 37 inch presentation monitor.  The monitor is CRT, and native 4:3, but it is a MONITOR, not a tv, so certain things such as overscan do not actually apply to me.

I run 480p and 720p using component cables out from my v4, 128mb xbox to an X2VGA2 box, and then from there to the monitor via BNC connections.

the monitor has some capacitors going out on it, and it's native position is slightly left of center, but on a system with UnleashX on it with no screen positioning done, the screen has 0 overscan.

just curious....personally, i don't need all the old school look, but i do want correct proportions as much as possible, relative to resolution, and i want the best possible look i can get (less jaggies the better) without loss of clarity.

thanx for your hard work

I've updated today to ZsneXbox 2.98 to try this feature and hell yeah, it's great! But unlike what I thought it isn't (at least it doesn't look like) a software trick, but rather a hardware trick, it seems like this mode is a alternative video encoding method with a diferent pixel aspect ratio. Maybe MS included it in the video encoding chip so these old games compilations don't suffer from these overscan problems? Regardless of what it is or the reason was included it's a really awsome thing.

Hi, Cospefogo.

Recently, I've spent an entire evening trying to find good size and coordinates for ZSnexbox, but could'nt get anything usable with the analog sticks.

According to nes6502, these values are stored in the .ini file of the emulator, in the "zLeft, zRight, zTop and zBottom" fields.

Could you please write these values here from your .ini file so I can test them directly?.

Thanks!

Yes Dude!
I can do that... Just give me some time!
My Xbox is miles away from the computer, so it happens
rarely of pluging it on my HUB to get access to the INI files.

But as soon as I do some uploads to my XBOX I will
check the INI for you!

Cheers!
