I've heard that ARCADE roms are run using MAME.  But what is MAME?  I've heard things like MAME B6 and MAMEoX and MAME128, are these the ROM format or are they the emulators?  I'm sure this has already been explained many times, a link to where it was explained would be fine.  Thanks.

You really need to read this thread first:

Its very helpful and will get you going in the right direction

To answer your question MAME is an arcade emulator.  Most people use MAMEoX128 Plus! for their XBox.   FBAXXX and FBAXXX Pro are also arcade emulators specifically for NeoGeo and Capcom games and most people use those for the NeoGeo and Capcom arcade games.

Great.  I think I understand it better.  Can you direct me to a tutorial on how to install MAMEoX128 Plus! on my XBOX?  I've never installed an emulator before.  (I know how to use FlashFXP, I know it involves that much.)

Yes you need to FTP it over.  To learn how to setup your computer and xbox for file transfers this guide is pretty good and explains several options to choose from:

I would recommend after you learn how to transfer files you install XBMC as your dashboard if you dont already use it, then create a folder called emulators and put all your emulators in that folder

I already have Unleash X, but I have XBMC in my Applications.  Can I make XBMC my actual dashboard instead?  I do like the layout of it a lot.

As far as MameOx, do I basically just find it on google, download it, unzip it, transfer what I just unzipped into the emulators folder on my xbox, and put all of my roms in the rom folder within the MameOx main directly, and that's it?  I'm just wondering if I can just transfer all of the unzipped files, or if there is an actual installation process I have to do, you know?  Thanks for your help.

Set up the XBox version of MAME on your PC's hard disc, as it's easier than struggling to set it up on the XBox. For example, download MAMEOX, unzip (or unRAR) it to your PC, in, say:

c:\xbox\MAMEOX

then put all of your MAME ROMs (the games) into the MAMEOX \ROMS\ folder (which in the above example will probably be   c:\xbox\MAMEOX\ROMS     ), but DO NOT UNZIP THEM!!!! The ROMs must stay as ZIP files. Then transfer the MAMEOX folder and sub folders onto your XBox, which can be done in two ways:

1) FTP them across from the PC to the XBox, via a suitable cable, and a suitable program, such as FlashFXP, or

2) Burn a DVD with the MAMEOX folder and sub folders. To do this, you have to burn the DVD in XBox format, which later versions of Nero can do (select UDF format DVD from the wizard, and tick the XBox compatability box in the options page), or you can make an XBox format .iso file on your XBox hard disc, using a suitable PC program (see the PC programs at XBox-scene.com) and then burn the .iso to DVD. If you do decide to use a DVD to transfer MAMEOX across, you'll need an XBox installed file explorer/copier to copy MAMEOX from the DVD to your XBox (I'd recommend UnleashX, it has a great file explorer/copier). And the program must either be installed on your XBox beforehand, or must boot from a DVD, so that it runs, to allow you to use it to copy itself to the XBox, so you can insert the MAMEOX DVD into the XBox and then copy MAMEOX to the DVD. Basically, use the FTP method, unless (a) you absolutely can't, i.e. you don't have a PC, and have to use your friend's PC to get MAMEOX in the first place, or ((IMG:style_emoticons/default/cool.gif) you want to run MAMEOX from a DVD permenantly (in which case, copy all of the data and subfolders from c:\xbox\MAMEOX onto the DVD, so that default.xbe is in the root directory, and there is no MAMEOX directory on the DVD).

As for where it goes on your XBox hard disc, try putting it in f:\games or f:\apps\emulators, or anywhere else that your dashboard menu program (UnleashX, Evo-X etc) will search for games and programs when run. The default.xbe file, which all programs have on the XBox as there starting file, must be in a subfolder to the folder you want your dashboard menu program to search, so if you copied MAMEOX to the f:\games
folder, then you'd have

f:\games\MAMEOX\default.xbe
f:\games\MAMEOX\ROMS\****loads of zip files, which are your MAME games****

and that's basically it. It's the same for any emulator (except some need their ROMs zipped up, others need them unzipped, and some emulators don't care either way), game or program on the XBox. The only two things to be aware of are that not all MAME ROMs will work with MAMEOX, either due to XBox limitations, (try the different versions of MAME for the XBox, though you can't guaranee success), or MAME bugs and rewrites (as you probably know, it's not uncommon for newer versions of MAME to lose compatability with games that the older version ran, plus sometimes newer versions of MAME require different ROM files for the same game), and you may have a problem finding XBox MAME versions, and any other XBox programs to. Read XBox-scene's FAQs for more information.

I hope that helped.

Download the latest version of XBMC (August 13th 2006 Cvs Build) and unzip it on your PC.  When you unzip it, it will contain 2 folders - XBMC  and _tools.   FTP into your XBox and delete your old XBMC folder which should be located at E:\Apps\XBMC then FTP over the new XBMC folder to that exact location. Your XBMC default.xbe should be located at E:\Apps\XBMC\default.xbe (this is very important)

When that is done look in the tools folder on your PC for "shortcut by team UIX.xbe" and rename that to default.xbe.  FTP that file over to your dashboard folder at e:\dash.  You will already have a default.xbe there so you will need to rename that first to default.xbe_backup or else it will get overwritten.  This will allow you to use XBMC as your dash.  Anytime you want to upgrade XBMC just replace the folder at E:\Apps\XBMC with the new XBMC folder in the zip (no need to worry about the tools folder and shortcut anymore)

On E: create a folder called emulators and place all your emulators there.  Once you have done that you can then download emulator icons for each system which makes a nice addition.
