XVBoy v0.2
Posted by XanTium | July 28 13:19 EST

Alg5 released XVBoy, a new Nintendo Virtual Boy emulator port to Xbox:
Quote

XVBoy is an Xbox port of Red Dragon, a Virtual Boy emulator: the failed attempt from nintendo to make a kind of "virtual reality" game system.
Graphics and controller are emulated. 3D graphics can be emulated with 3D red & blue rendering: it means that you need red & blue glasses.
Original source code was using allegro which is not available on Xbox: some hacks were needed to port it (streching is not implemented)!

Some instructions:
Put your roms in /roms/ subdirectory. Zip files are allowed.
3D with red/blue system can be activated or deactivated in the menu.
Frame Skip can be adjust from the menu.
While in game, press white button to go to the menu.

To Do:
* Optimise (don't know if i will do it).
* Save ram state
* Implement masked_stretch_blit

Along with this new emulator, here is a xbox porting "how to" with XVBoy as proof of concept: http://alg5.ifrance.com/Xbox_porting/index.htm
This howto is still in ealy beta stage...

I used to love my Virtual Boy. It was the best $7.50 on a console I ever spent. This could be a lot of fun. I'll have to see if I still have my roms.

I JUST happened to find a pair the other day in my old software pile. They came free with MAGIC CARPET for the PC.

Now after 12 years of sitting in a box I can finally put them to some use.

Great release!  I've looked at the source before, once I found out it was allegro I had balked at porting it.  I might look again to do an openxdk port based on your sources smile.gif.

It's a beta, so i thinks you can encounter some locks up.
If some of you have locks up, it's better to see if red dragon on PC has the same problem. If not, explain me exactly how to obtain it. Normally i made the bitmap_blip quite robust: some graphics glitch disparears from red dragon PC version  jester.gif

You know, for all the crap Nintendo gets for the VirtualBoy, there were some damn good games.  For example, Teleroboxer was great.  Galactic Pinball, that was fun as well.  Mario Clash was pretty fun (its a game like the original Mario Bros), and Wario Land was great.  I believe there were a couple other good games as well, but I can't remember them off the top of my head.

I looked up a game list.

Mario Tennis was great for it as well.  I owned a couple other games, like baseball (which was only so-so), and I think I had another, but the ones I mentioned are perobably the only ones worth trying.

If I had a set of 3d glasses I'd definitely give this a shot, although I still have my Virtual Boy around here somewhere too.

hrm retarded? garbage? people who talk like this have never owned or gave it a chance... Ive owned one for years and have numerous titles... the unit is very underrated it has a few awesome games(telero boxer and wario are a few). the orig unit had some eye strain issues when playing for a while(just play in a dark room)... eyes adjusted to the black red and then u remove in a lit room and ooooh the headache... but its still awesome

i gotz to find me some 3d glasses now..

I have one with WarioLand. The graphics are great, you just can't look into it for too long or else you usually get a headache. Still, it will be fun either way.
