I have a question concerning Mame roms. Here's the deal:

I want to go copy as many working roms as possible to my xbox, because I know how many of them do not work either because of age/hardware/emulator/etc. Unable to find a current compatibility list anywhere I thought I could simply go in and delete all roms that were made after 1997 or 1998 or so. This would be a crude workaround, but it would be better than going in and taking out roms one by one by one and so on. I know in Mame itself I can sort by year but I can't seem to do this anywhere where I have the ability to delete/move the files. I've found many auditing programs available, but none seem to let me do this (or I didn't see the option)

Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

SortInfo (http://hem.passagen.se/robert.palmqvist/) can do this and a lot more.  You can sort on anything.

I sorted first on "game doesn't work" or something. Then I had it generate a batch file that would delete all the games in a folder with those names. I then did "no sound" or something and generated a batch file for that.

When all was said and done I had a nearly perfect working set with all games that didn't work or didn't have sound removed (regardless of year).

You can also filter on Company name. So you could create a folder with all the Capcom games, or all the Neogeo games (usefull for FBA-XXX), Or a folder for Fighting, Horizontal shooters, vertical shooters, etc...

There is a tutorial in the readme file that comes with it that explains how to generate the batch files.

I've been playing with this program off and on all day. I've tried everything, but my listinfo.txt file keeps coming up as blank and 0 bytes. Since I have no list of games, I can't get SortInfo to do anything at all in the mean time. I've tried everything including the following command line code:

CODE
mame32 -listinfo > listinfo.txt

I have my roms in the correct directories, and mame reads/plays them all just fine. I'm so close!

type: mame32 -listfull -ll > listinfo.txt

If you download the regular mame and go to the command line and type mame -showinfo
it will tell you all the commands and options. Hope that works

Ok, one step further so that's cool. It created a listinfo.txt file, but when imported into SortInfo I am still left with a blank screen. It says "Parsed: 233670 characters, forming 12234 tokens, describing 0 games in 0 ms."

Just to check on the format, here is a snippet of the beginning of my file:
CODE
Name:     Description:
puckman   "PuckMan (Japan set 1, Probably Bootleg)"
puckmana  "PuckMan (Japan set 2)"
puckmanf  "PuckMan (Japan set 1 with speedup hack)"
puckmanh  "Puckman (Falcom?)"
pacman    "Pac-Man (Midway)"
pacmanf   "Pac-Man (Midway, with speedup hack)"

Nevermind, I got it to work!! Score!

Apparently the "listinfo" command was taken out of the newer version. I just d/l an older one (after a ton of trying other stuff) and it worked perfect the first try. Finally (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)
