Was the pinned topic "best emulators for xbox" around the last time you were here?  You will find your answers there.

do I need to upgrade my ram to play mame?  and scoobysnaxx don't be an ass

I always find it humorous when people actually take the time to write a response that usually points somewhere else or takes the time to lecture somebody with the exact time it takes and space it takes to just give an answer... classic.

Also if you would have read the original question and have visited the very pinned topic that you told me to go look in you would have been able to put 2 and 2 together and understand my question.  I'll start over and make it more plain for you..

Whats the best mame for 1.6?

The emulator in that FAQ says to use the mame emulator that requires you to upgrade to 128mb ram.  However you can't do that with a 1.6.  Oh look at that, the light bulb goes off in scoobysnaxx head.

Settle down son.

The best emu's for the xbox are up top in the pinned for a reason. Was trying to be helpful. deathx88 has put together and extrmemly useful list with some good points.

I have a 1.6 myself and currently use mamedox which works great. The last time I checked mame128 didn't require the upgrade, but benefited from it. It really depends on what kind of options you are in the market for.

My apologies if my orginal post came off as rude.

MORE INFO HERE

You can get some great info on both of the main branches of mame for the xbox at the above link. (straight from the horses mouth). The devs for both projects frequent there. There are a few threads there with lost of info in them on both types.

Scoobysnaxx,

Have you tried 128 Plus! on your box before?  Likkle mentioned in another thread that it doesn't run on a 1.6, I just wanted confirmation on that from someone that has one because a note about that should be added to the Best Emulators pinned topic.  I've recently modded a couple of 1.6s and I could have swore it ran fine, but now I'm not sure I even put 128 Plus on them.

Nope - mamedox only on my 1.6 so far. I thought mamedox got a mention in the "best emu's for xbox thread - I see now that it does not. I could have sworn both were mentioned in the past with points on each. My mistake for pointing him up there thinking this. (Though 128 does appear to be the better choice nowadays)

I had planned on upgrading to mame128 soon enough with all I had been hearing of it - but it sounds as if that may not be possible from what you are telling me.

Sorry Kafluke - looks like I got ahead of myself. I am going to do some reading at that link I provided to see if I can get us some more info seeing as how we are now in the same boat.

Yes, I believe so.  I recently purchased my XBOX and that's the version I have.  Here's the strange thing, I have a friend's XBOX currently to softmod and it was one of the first but it's a 1.6 too.  I guess an XBOX Live game must've ran an update on it or something, similar to how the PSP receives it's firmware upgrades.  If anyone has a different theory or knows this to be untrue altogether, please correct me.

Firmware update to 1.6?  I think you are confused.  The versions refer to hardware differences in the motherboards and don't have anything to do with firmware.  If you go to the XBox-Scene main page and click on "XB-versions" at the top there is a step by step guide on how to identify your version... but you need to open up the box.

Anyway, I just need one or two people to confirm that MAMEoX 128 Plus! doesn't work with a 1.6 XBox so I can add a note about it to pinned topic.  I don't have one available to me to test.

MAMEoX128 Plus! does work on 1.6 xboxes, but may not work on softmodded 1.6 xboxes.
It's because of the led color changing code. I've removed the code in next build.

@ Thraxen: You're right; I completely mis-typed my comment.  What I meant to say it that the old XBOX has the version 4960 dashboard.  The XBOX version is 1.0.  How could this be?

@ HK$: My XBOX is indeed softmodded so that explains why this didn't work for me.  I prefer to burn MAME to a DVD & play from there so let me ask, do you have a rough idea of an ETA for your next build?  Not trying to be greedy or rush you, just trying to determine whether or not to go ahead & burn a DVD with what I have or wait a little longer if you think it'll be ready in the near future.  Thanks.

Several ways actually.  One, if you ever connected to Live it will update your dash for you and you don't even have to have a Live account.  When MS first added the ability to switch the dash to 480p I connected to Live through the dash and the first thing it did was update my dash and I didn't even have a Live account.  Also, many Live enabled games come with dash updates.  One of them could have updated your dash.  Or if you didn't do the mod yourself the person that did your mod might have updated it... or if you used an installer disc of some sort if may have installed later version.

Thanks for the explanation.  I thought so.  Oh, and I've mistaken the dash AGAIN, it's 5960.
