Possible To Rename Characters And Have Them Work?

I just downloaded a new Xmugen pack and it has lots of characters. The problem is that lots of these characters are the same ones but from different games. Such as SF2 Ryu and SF3 Ryu. However, they're both listed as "ryu".  Like when I try to put the SF3 Ryu into the char folder, it asks me if I want to replace the SF2 Ryu, because they're both named "ryu". I tried renaming all the SF3 "ryu" files folder to something else. Then when I tried loading it, it wouldn't work when I chose him. but it says "error unable to run ryu command" and other things...
