Hi, I have a problem with FF VI. The game locks up every time I kill an enemy. It started in operahouse and if I kill any enemy it locks up. I'm using v.18 pcsxbox and these fixes Old Frameskip On, Frameskip Off, Sound Timer Method - Original.

Version: PCSXbox v18
Game: FF8/FFVIII
Mode: BIOS
Core version: 1.5
GPU: 1.16
SPU: 1.9
Graphical Fixes: Lazy Screen Update/Old FS/Framelimit ON
All else OFF
CPU Fixes: All OFF
SPU Fixes: All OFF/Reverb BEST/Interpolation: Gaussian/Sound Timer Method THREADED
Throttle Method ORIGINAL
Use Newer Restore: YES
Save Mem Cards With State: YES
Multitap: NO
Controller 1: DualShock
Graphical Filters: NONE
Throttle UNMAPPED

What is the optimal settings to make FF8 run as close to the original as possible?

Those are the settings I've reverted back to using.

A few of the problems I have after messing with the settings are:
CG movies appear extremely pixelated, much more so than when run on the PS (as far as I can remember) AND before I messed with the settings today (I remember the movies are fine last night, but I was in a hurry so I didn't pay much attention).
Rumble feature doesn't seem to work.
Biggest problem: Save states now DO NOT work. Before I reverted back to the standard settings above, whenever I tried to load a state the Xbox will just hang. Now AFTER reverting back to the above settings, whenever I load, the game SAVES itself first, then LOADS it, so instead of a state I had, say, 30 minutes ago, I have a brand-spanking-new one EVERY. SINGLE. TIME I load! It completely defeats the purpose of a save state. >.< I'm afraid this is ruining the game for me, since I am still stuck before I first head off to the Fire Caverns, and everytime some random shit happens to the emulation, I have load a memory card save and be forced to listen to Quistis ramble on for 18 pages, front and back, before I can do a damned thing.

Ok, the savestate problem seems to be solved. Just had to move everything FF8 related out of the E:/saves/pcsxbox folder. Which ones are the savestate files and which are the memory cards? In moving them out I lost even the memory save I had of right before Quistis's rambling in front of the school gate.

PS: How do you edit a post?

Bump..using pscx 1.8 i believe, ff8...has anyone been able to find the correct settings to make the battle menu's visible?  All i get is a blank screen...no way in hell i can play thru the game like that ><  Even went to the liberty of installing linux just so i can attempt to try it using epsxe but havent quite got the correct controller configs working...would really prefer to play FF8 on pscx though, alot easier than loading linux and what not...any suggestions for battle menu fix would be great!!

There are two islands in the game called "the island closest to heaven" and "the island closest to hell". These two spots have the strongest monsters in the game.

"The island closest to heaven" is located just a bit east of the chocobo sanctuary and is shaped roughly like a box.

"The island closest to hell" is west of Deling City and is shaped like a bent cross.

These islands contain very powerful creatures, and killing them is guaranteed to raise your party a level with each battle. They may be too tough to take on if you're below level 60 or so.

I have a problem with getting the menus in FF9 to work. I've tried the suggestions and for the most part the main battle menus appears. But when i select an item or a secondary attack, like what magic to use, it doesn't show up. Is there something else im missing or can it be helped at all?

Not a total fix for the menu flickering in the NTSC version of Final Fantasy IX, but using the posted settings for Final Fantasy IX on PCSXbox version 13, with PCSXbox v19, core version 1.6, and GPU version 1.12, the flickering isn't too bad and the battles seem to lag a little less. Items and spell menus seem to show up ok as well. Pressing back on the items menu to view the item information seems to limit the flickering in the items menu. I didn't test it beyond the initial battle, so I can't say these are long term fixes or these settings will work through completion of the game.

As far as the items menu not appearing at all, I only experienced that problem when enabling lazy screen updates. Using the posted settings for FFIX on PCSXbox v13, the item menu appears, but does flicker.

I have been extensively playing with FF7's settings recently and i think i've found the best possible settings for music and playablility. There is some occasional slight slowdown during battle (ie. lots of poly's when limit breaking, summoning) but the music is usually pretty spot on and it plays damn close to perfect.

BIOS Mode: BIOS File
Core Version: 1.4
GPU: 1.16
SPU: 1.9
Graphics Fixes: All OFF except for Old Frame Skipping ON and Framelimit ON
CPU Fixes: All OFF. I haven't noticed any difference with any of them ON.
SPU Fixes: XA Sound On. Reverb: Best/Slowest. Interpolation: Cubic/Slow. Sound Timer: Original. Wait CPU: Off.
Throttle Method: Fixed.

These settings have got me playing FF7 (NTSC) at 100% 95% of the time. It's really enjoyable and the music is crisp and nice. Framerate drops every now and again but i can't do much about that. Some sound effects are a bit squiffy (trains sound squealy) but perfectly liveable.

Thanks for posting this.  Saved me a lot of time tweaking to get it right, and it does work rather well.  I have a somewhat tempremental Thomson drive which caused some jerkiness on disc access so I copied the ISOs to harddrive and it now runs like it did on the PSX.  Which means I can finally actually play it, after ten years of not getting around to it!

Oh yes, the settings for MGS on another page work well too.

I'm so happy with this emulator I'm going to get SNES, Genesis and Amiga ones up and running in the future.

I've been having problems with final fantasy 7. I've had the emulator for months and everything has been working until now.
I'm using pcsxbox version 11. My Throttle Key is unmapped, im using old framskip, framelimit, and frameskip is turned off.
It just freezes on the black screen after the loading screen. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/dry.gif)

On Final Fantasy VIII, I've been having some trouble with the ballroom scene. When Squall and Rinoa start dancing, it gets to a shot of her face, and then freezes. I can't do anything after that. I've made sure to match the settings listed as optimal, and I'm running the latest version.

Has anyone here had similar issues? I've tried searching the board to no avail.

I didn't mess with the states often, but I too found them somewhat unreliable (not to mention cheap, heck, the game has enough exploits as it is  tongue.gif ). Try to stick with the in-game save points instead.

I did notice that if you load a state and it locks, you can likely reboot the game and you'll find that the memory card associated with that state will be available.

Another trick is to just save two states every time, one a few seconds after the other. If the first won't load, you've at least got a second chance.
