If you have x-mugen installed on your xbox hard drive, then you should also see a picture of a joystick and the words "FAT-X" below it.  If you see this, choose this option and x-mugen should load.

And if you don't see this like I don't?

I get past this, and the Linux thing begins to load.  I am loading XMugen off of the HDD, and select FatX at the Gentoox screen.  Linux says:

(Forgive the typoes, I had to swap to composite cables to make it work and the res is difficult to read)

Adding Swap: 52420OK Swap Space (Priority -1)
bdah: Bad Access Block = 0, Count = 1
end request: I/O Error, dev 03:38 (hda), sector 0
Mount: Mounting /dev/hda56 on /cdrom failed: Invalid Argument
umount: /cdrom Invalid Argument
Mount: /dev/hda is write protected.  Mount Read-Only
cdrom: open failed
mount: mounting /dev/hdb on /cdrom failed: No Medium
Kernel Panic: Attempted to Kill Init!

At this point the green light on the xbox blinks and it hangs forever.  Any ideas?

I have a regular xbox, 64mb ram, etc.  1 S-Type controller plugged in, nothing fancy.

I have this same problem, and just like him it also works with everything on E.  However E is way to small for chars and stuff obviously.  I posted about this problem a few months ago, and just came back around the communtiy today to see if any of the new stuff would work, but I still have the same old problem. I am running on a softmod box btw.

I'm encountering a problem ..here is the bottom part of my Linux console log..

Error opening /dev/input/js1!
Are you sure you have joystick support in your kernel?

Above this, I have "Mad Catz MicroCOM found.", so I'm not sure what's going on.  Any idea?  The cursor blinks at the bottom here, my X-Box activity light flashing green every .5 seconds and no response from my controller..I also searched and found two other threads like this with no answer.  I have one controller plugged in.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, as I kind of wasted a whole night configuring my Mugen setup and it seems to have been a waste..

http://xmugen.nugnugnug.com

Our new XMugen site.  Has a much more current FAQ than this...  I'm hoping to get this FAQ removed and just a link to the site as this is so outdated and useless now.

1.  Go to http://xmugen.nugnugnug.com for all XMugen discussion.
2.  You should update the package as much of it is outdated (look at the site you got it from for more info, there is lots of discussion about it there).
