Reread the tutorial of this thread. You just have to put the mugen folder in F:/ BUT you have to have a couple files in E:/mugen and a couple in E:/ too.

I had all the files placed in their correct location as per the readme, and I had opted to put the actual mugen directory in F/GAMES. But apparently it won't work like that, after I moved the actual mugen directory to E/mugen, it worked fine.

Anyway, It crashed when I pressed down+left on the pad, it also crashed when I loaded a character that worked fine in Winmugen... I don't think I'm going to mess with this now. I'll just wait until a more stable version is available, or maybe when Openmugen is available.

I can't get past he gentoox screen. I have bzimage and ird-loop both in a mugen folder on drive E, and the mugen folder with files on the F/emulators, but the led gives me an error flash when its trying to load irdloop. does it have anything to do with the 64mb of ram i have, or I'm doing something else wrong

Also, I was wondering if it was possible to edit the character select screen so that if you pressed down, the cursor would bring you to the first slot of the next line. Normally, if there was a blank character slot under you, you wouldn't be able to press down. I would like the cursor to always move to the first character of the next line if you pressed down.

Lol, I hope that was explained right. Its because there's this nice screenpack I saw which needs a little tweak like that to work properly. http://www.mugenjet.achoo.jp/

late reply but i might have a fix and this is the only way i got around that. you need to edit the following text in system.def

wrapping = 1
moveoveremptyboxes = 1

and this line, try it if it works or not:

showemptyboxes = 0

i think this will only work with the style of the Mugen Fighting Jam style of select screen, where it displays sections and not boxed characters. the way i got it to work is that u can scroll right past the characters and when u find empty boxes, you can scroll down. the new problem is that if you go past like 20 boxes of characters, then one more to the 21st and get a empty box and u press down to go to the next section. you end up in the next section on box #21 from where u left off from the last row. this is the only way i got it all to work. mugen isnt advanced enough to actually return you to the beginning character after you press down.

Hmm, worth a try I guess (though I didn't quite understand how it works). One workaround I did was trim down guybird's pack so I could fit only 30 characters per section (SF, DBZ, ANIME, etc). What I didn't understand by doing this was why the loading times didn't really improve eventhough I removed a lot of characters (and some stages as well).

you removed characters? did you delete them out of the select.def too? the issue may be just the screenpack itself or your mugen.cfg settings. the mugen.cfg controls the graphical setup that mugen will use/read. i myself use a sf3 screenpack released by someone else. i took it and edited it for my private use. it can hold a unlimited # of characters. its not the boxed/oval shape of character select screen that are commonly seen in every fighting game. its just a category or section type where it displays a section by the game and it has all those characters by that game of franchise in that cateogory. basically the same exact screenpack you see here: http://www.mugenjet.achoo.jp/ only in sf3: third strike style. i even added more sections and hidden sections to mine. i can tell you that i have 1000+ characters and my mugen is well over 7gb and the loading times are minimal and runs great. smile.gif

When you move characters from winmugen to x-mugen make sure you run them through x-mugen renamer first. Plus make sure you edit your select.def file. X-mugen can not find characters if they have caps in the titles. For example if your character is KenMasters in the select.def and it is kenmasters in the char folder x-mugen wont find it. Make sure you remove all the caps in the char names in the select.def.

Well what I am wondering is, does anyone know what the latest linux mugen is? The version that came with x-mugen is a 2001 version, is there a later version?

One more thing, Mugen Fighting Jam seams to take a while no matter what you have. I started with a few characters and am now up to 490 and it still takes 30 seconds to a minute to load

I have no clue what if any newer versions of linmugen there are.

As for the screenpack loading times, you gotta remember that the xbox only has 64megs of ram; not very much.  Also remember that there are settings that you can tweak in the mugen.cfg file.  However, setting mugen up for faster loading will reduce the in game performance.  I can "suffer" through 20-30 secs of loading for a smooth running in game setup.

I downloaded the latest from the bin and it starts to load up. It gets to the black screen with all the text loading with the guys picture at the top left hand corner of the screen, then it says "Kernel panic: Attempted to kill init!" Any ideas whats wrong? I really want to try this pop.gif

Do you know any other screenpack with acceptable load times that are similar to mugen fighting jam? (with a categorized character select screen)

well im running the sf3 screenpack with the categorized select screen. i had around 800 character and it really only took 2-3minutes to load and i got a 64mb xbox. now i have around 1400+ characters and it takes up to 5minutes to load.

Just as a note for anyone using this FAQ, it is very outdated.  I don't have edit permissions on it, and frankly most people don't look at this anyhow.  Go to the XMugen Spot forum for updated files and an updated FAQ.  Plus it would be quicker to get an answer to problems there.  And as stated earlier, the screenpack has little to no effect on the load time.  The xbox only has 64mb of ram, so as you add more characters it will take longer to load them up.  Hell, even on my pc which has 1gig of ram it takes about 20 secs to load so really just chill out for 30 secs then enjoy it.
