I believe I used Change Case and ultraedit32.
And about the crashing.  If you convert everything in your mugen to win/linux compatable you should have no crashing.  My winmugen NEVER crashes.  I know how it can alot at first- trust me, it drove me nuts.  But years of experience with mugen has allowed me to stop all of that.  Check out some mugen forums for help.

"usb.c: USB device 4 (vend/prod 0x45e/0x280) is not calimed by any active"...

"Error opening /dev/js1! Are you sure you have joystick support in your kernel?"

ok, i think i've got it.
The ID of your joypad is not in the linux driver ID list.
look here:

http://cvs.sourcefor....22&view=markup

You'll see the 0x45e belongs to M$ joypad, but you've got a product ID that is not in the list. Do you have a real MS pad ? if so M$ is f*cking stupid to use different prod ID for the same stuff

indeed i used older list (i used 2.4 kernel, this list is from 2.6). i need to upgrade the list to the 2.6 kernel and add yours.

if you've a real M$, you can still contact the xbox-linux team or the developper of the driver to tell your vend/prod ID (search for the best way).

Interesting, every time I enable my mugen depth for 16bit, I get a "controller loop" error.  Once I set it back to 32, everything is fine.  I'm confused to why it likes to give a controller error anytime it doesn't like one of your settings; seems they should be totally unrelated.  Unless somehow the settings in the Joy2key setup are conflicting with mugen.cfg when its loaded?

i have the same problem. it's not related to joy2key. i don't know the reason. that's why i configured in order to ask the user to change video mode. and i think i'll stick to this solution

Xmugen-linux doesn't work at all for me when using a component cable, even in 480i mode and even if I set my dash to 720p or 1080i. It works fine with a RGB scart cable which runs at 480i only anyway. If my dash is set to 480p, when launching Xmugen the Xbox light flashes orange and the fan speeds up very fast.

this is an issue with linux xbox. try to find a solution in the linux forum. this problem is out of my scope

An ESC button is needed, preferably assigned to the Xbox controllers BACK button.

yes i need to add it. hope i will have time to do the changes this week.

Changing certain parts of the 'mugen.cfg' gives a controller error.
Loading certain characters gives a controller error of "Error opening /dev/js1! Are you sure you have joystick support in your kernel?". It seems that if there is any Mugen related error, it just gives a controller error rather than a proper error from Linux Mugen.

The error opening /dev/js1 is not related to mugen ! it's displayed by joy2key, wich is related to the fact that one of your joypad is not recognized by linux (only one is recognized). give the vend/prod ID that should be displayed on the same screen.

Some people have big Mugen builds over 4GB. The E: drive is too small for this. Support for putting the mugen folder on the F: drive would be great.

this would be quite easy. i'll see

Well, after a long night of testing and praying, I've come to the conclusion that unless alg can come correct the issues that the joy2key seems to be creating, that unfortunately there is little reason to bother getting your hopes up with this program.

yes, i think it's useless for you to test more. when i will add the ID of you joypad it should be straight award. or try to borrow another joypad from someone else.

After some looking into it, come to find out that I didn't realize that I had a memory card plugged into the offending controller; Linux was picking it up as a different type of controller I guess.  I'm still having issues with the controllers though.  I'll set the resolution, press F1, then go to select a mode to play in, and the dpad will just stop responding.  The other controller will work just fine, but if I am to go into training, no responses at all from the dpad.  If I try to go into arcade with the working controller, I will end up in a controller loop.  I guess I'm going to have to borrow some controllers and do some experimenting as I seem to be the only one with these problems.

fantoboy, what parameters did you set in the text editing programs you used?  I've found out about the \ needing to be / , and correcting the text case in the select.def, but did you do more inside of the characters themselves?  I know you said to go to mugen forums for help but as most people here have stated, the state of most mugen sites nowadays is a joke.  If you try to get help troubleshooting, there is very little documentation there, and most people are of the mind that if you aren't creating characters, then you are not worth replying to.

I know that I said that I would really like to help others avoid all this by making a torrent, but as you see, what I have has some problems.  With that in mind, and knowing that others have WAY more than I do (I only have 2 gigs, which is around 320 characters) that works fine, but they don't want to anger any mugen authors (which is very understandable) I would like to ask this:  Would anyone who has a GOOD set of characters that all are working in linmugen be willing to upload me some characters so that I can put together a whole collection for people to work with?  The people that have large and perfect collections have undoubtedly been working on it for years as the characters are so far and between, and there usually has to be a lot of modifications done to them to make them compatible with your version of mugen.  With characters being hard to find, and so much work required to get them to work, I think its in the best interest of all mugen lovers to have something to start off with that is guaranteed to work.  PM me if anyone is interested.

I only use 1 controller no memory cards (official MS big controller)..
On the other hand if I plug in 2 controllers at the same time , I get the same error you just descibed.
but with just 1 controller every thing works fine (all play modes)...

your problem is not clear for me.
you have the :"Error opening /dev/js1! Are you sure you have joystick support in your kernel?" ?
the message that there is a loop is normal. this is a joy2key message: joy2key needs to be in loop in the background of mugen to constandly transform the joystick message into keyboard message. and there are 2 instance of joy2key: each for one of the 2 joystick.

normally, if you have the "error opening /dev/js1", you should have only one controller that works.

these are all ways to convert to winmugen standards.  Linmugen has similair standards.
I am not totally familiar with linmugen, but I know all of my winmugen converted characters work.

get dos2win: http://youngcity.ath.cx//modules/sections/index_jeux_m_utilitaire.php

insert the convertor in the character's directory.  Execute the dos2win.exe.
It is not the "cleanest" conertor.  But should do what most of you need.

in the def file of a character:

Version dates should NEVER have strings.

versiondate  = 06,16,2002
mugenversion = 04,14,2001

The code above is the only accepted syntax. NONE ELSE.

The same for pal defaults. only 1-12 values are allowed, delimited by commas. Other values will cause the crash!

Code:

pal.defaults = 4,5,6,1,2,3

use a batch text editor and change all instances of
"movehit = 1", "movecontact = 1" or "moveguarded = 1" into simply "movehit", "movecontact" and "moveguarded"
you will find these in cns and cmd files.

I used hexedit32 and change case to open every def file in the chars and stages folders and changed all of the backslashes, and changed everything to lowercase.  I also changed all of the folder names to lower case.

I have about 350 characters in the "main" mugen I use.  And I have no problems now on my xbox.
I didn't use my large mugen which is like 8 gigs.

There are tons of highly active mugen sites and forums.  It is not a dead scene as everyone would like to beleive.  Yes, many creators have left, causing there creations to become rare.  But most creators leave because they get pissed at "complete" games that include their characters.  I'm sorry, but I will not contribute to pissing more people off.  I myself cannot make characters, and I am sad to see certain creators leave the scene who have contributed some amazing creations.  Some of the best authors resort to not releasing publicly, which is sad.  I beg you not to contribute to pissing off these people.  I do understand where you guys are coming from, and it is frustrating to not have every character you want instantly.  But it really isn't hard to get good characters with a little work.

If you need help, this is the best site:

http://www.mugenguild.com/forumx/

If you need a character you can't find, this site has a request section.  People will privately email each other creations:

http://forum.mgbr.net/

here are some sites with good characters or links to characters:

my favorite:
http://www.geocities.jp/warusaki3/

http://tinshiva.hp.infoseek.co.jp/index.html

http://conversion.wo.to/

http://fanaticmugen.free.fr/index_eng.php

http://sander71113.mgbr.net/mugen.html

http://www.mugenguild.net/~pots/

http://tkof2k2.free.fr/byakko/

http://projectm.mgbr.net/index.html

http://www.streetmugen.com/mugen-us.html

http://sp-vega.hp.infoseek.co.jp/index.html

http://randomselect.i-xcell.com/

with these sites, you can start building a decent collection.  Most of these characters are winmugen compatable.  Please don't use this info to make a collection torrent.  I'm giving you the means to have a decent mugen without resorting to that.

edit: for the warusaki characters and a few others.  You must change doubleres = in the mugen.cfg file to doubleres = 4.  This is a secret unlisted option which will allow hi-res characters.  This may cause some slowdown, not sure.  I have an xbox with upgraded ram and have no problems.  Dunno how it will be on a regular xbox.  Realize this option may mess with your font sizes in your screenpack.  You will need to deal with it, or get a doubleres = 4 compatable screenpack.

edit: I'm using a usb keyboard for the esc button.  Works fine.

edit:
I suggest changing these in mugen.cfg to lower memory usage:

PlayerCache = 0
Precache = 0
BufferedRead = 0
UnloadSystem = 1

another thing in winmugen:

you should always try to list a stage for every character like this in the select.def:

cvschunli, stages/beijing.def, order=3

sometimes it would cause a crash if you lose a match in arcade and continued.
Dunno if it affects linmugen.

as for where to download, check "the usual places" man!

I definitely appreciate you taking the time to write that out fantoboy.  It's the fact that there is soooo much work to do to make this run that is irritating.  But, at least I have a headstart, and hopefully I can fix all of these problems and get this thing running good.

I usually do this as I have all of the street fighter stages and associate them with their counterparts.  I really don't see where it uses that setting though; when I fight someone that has a stage associated with them, it usually won't go to that stage but just a random one.

I have found if you plug in the controller after you get it to load it works. I am still having major problems but i have gotten one thing to work with no problem. I have some of the life bars for KOF Neo Wave and they work fine but I am having a hell of a time getting some characters and some other things to work. But will keep trying it out. Good release man THANK YOU!

Here is a quick suggestion for thoese who want to make torrents for working files for this verison.
Why not just go ahead and create a listing of files that work on the build, and then include links to the authors website. I do agree with the other posters that mass packing files is a big no-no in the mugen community and that doing so would be a major direspect.

i vote for a mugen pack to be released to the xbox community

fuck those elitist "MuGeN sCEnE" faggots.
they act like they own the copyright to the characters in the first place.
they took someones copyrighted character and used them without permission, now they want to get pissed off when someone uses THEIR illegal works without permission??? FUCK OFF with that bullshit.

plus, who the fuck is gonna do anything about a mugen pack being released? it is going to be downloaded, and no one will be able to do jack shit about it. so let these faggots whine all they want.

go ahead and flame me, you will be wasting your time.

the stage is specified to each character in the select.def where you insert characters.

[characters]

dan
cvsdan, stages/playgrnd.def, order=3

so instead of just typing the character like dan above, type in all the info like cvsdan

edit:
The stage you specified might not be showing up because it is either inserted wrong, or check the stage.def.
You must make sure that the sff file is specified like this:

[BGdef]
spr = 3rd_chun.sff

not like this:

[BGdef]
spr = stages/3rd_chun.sff

thanks for the well thought out reply elietehatelier
these works are not illegal so long as there is no profit to be made.
They are considered fan art.  That would be like not being able to make a fan website for a band because you are using their band name. The point isn't the sprites (which they took hours of time to rip themselves), but the months and years of coding that goes into programming a character.  Yes, they did not draw the sprites- but the coding for how those sprites react in a game causing it to act like the character from the real game is not taken from the game itself.  It must be programmed using the coding for mugen, which is not easy.  Most characters take extremely long to program.  That is why most creators have only made a few characters.  Please show some respect, and how old are you? 5? fuck those elitist "MuGeN sCEnE" faggots.?  You sound like the jock guidos from high school that I hated growing up.  Arguing is fine with me, but can we have a mature argument based on facts and ideas and not name calling?  I would think that if you can modify your xbox you must have some intelligence.
