XMugen-linux Beta v0.1
« Reply #30 on: January 23, 2006, 03:36:00 PM »

I've been trying to do some testing (see what works, what doesn't)  and have had pretty good sucess.  I have been able to load a custom screenpack (just replace the existing files in /data/ with the pack that you normally put into /data/nameofscreenpack/), play all stages with their respective music, and play as a few different characters.  Problem is, with all of the different versions of mugen out there (DOS, Linux, Windows) there are many different character versions, and not all of them are compatible in this Linux version.

My biggest gripe, is the lack of a mapped escape button.  Without it, and the lack of in game reset while running Linux (well, at least for me), it makes it very time consuming to see what works and what doesn't when I have to manually reboot every time I want to switch characters.  Alg, how hard would it be to map escape to the back button really fast?

My other problem, is that I've only been able to load a game in training mode; Arcade just won't seem to work for me.  Everytime I try, it will go back to the linux screen and ask if my joystick is setup properly.  Any suggestions on how to fix this?

Maybe somebody can upload their configuration files after they find a way to run Mugen that is stable. Just the system files. It's not very hard to find characters, sound and stages.

That's what I'm trying to do actually.  I'm just trying to determine what characters work before I go creating a torrent with what I have.  For those people who don't know how to set up Mugen (I hadn't even heard of it until I happened to see the thread about it being ported to xbxo) it can be quite a pain in the ass to configure.  Now take that I have a shitload of characters and stages, and you have your work cut out for you.  The main thing to realize is, when you have a character that makes mugen crap out, it totally ruins the experience.  If the computer decides to use that character, Bam! mugen craps out.  You're friend picks that character, Bam! craps out again.  That's why I'm not making a torrent just yet.  In the mean time though, if people want a few characters to get yourself, here are a few good sites:

Guybird why dont you just test it in linux on the pc. Thats what im doing right now only that im finding most of the characters i have only work on the dos version of mugen. Does anyone know what exactly changes in the character files from version to version.

If you cant install linux try a linux live cd!

I'm from the mugen scene.  I'll tell you right now that the distribution of characters without the author's consent is HIGHLY frowned upon.  Realize that these people spend months if not years making individual characters.  They are each individual works of art that took alot of time and care.  Please don't distribute without consent.  It's really not hard to get characters.  There are request forums dedicated to getting things that you can't find.

I wouldn't do that if I were you. It is extremely frowned upon to transport packs of characters. If someone wants a character, they should go through the process of going to the site of the wanted character and downloading it themselves.
If you went through with the torrent, you'd be pissing a whole lot of creators off.

LinMugen=For Linux
WinMugen=For Windows.
They are the same engine, but you'd want to run LinMugen in this XBOX config. It's a helluva lot more stable.

From what I can tell , the Windows version is a hack of a unreleased (to the general public) version of Win-Mugen that
was a straight port of the last known Linux version...

So in theory everthing that works in the Windows version should run on the Linux version unless...

I asked him to just upload the system/config files, no characters, just so it can be easier for the noobs to add characters that the person has already downloaded. Ofcourse it will
be kind of difficult if everyone wants different kinds of characters.

The win version is the same version as the linux one but compiled for windows obviously. In theory we could test on the windows version(not the dos) and they should work on the linux version running on the xbox.

ONE VERY IMPORTANT THING, make sure that the folder named "ken" has a def file named "ken.def" not "KEN.def". Unlike windows, everything in linux is case sensitive. I just realized a couple of characters that i was testing in linux werent working cuz their def files were all caps.

I think its a good idea for a pack, ive spent hours on sites to find characters and usually they link to the authors page which arent there anymore. As long as we give credit to the authors i dont see why they would have to complain.

With Mugen, System and Config files are already in the system folders. It wouldn't run without them.

And it sounded a lot in this post:

That you were encouraging him to put up characters that aren't his, breaking a rule of thumb law in the Mugen Community (that is: Do NOT send hordes of characters in packs).

EDIT: Oh, now I get what you mean:
You want to make a full game with characters that aren't yours/from multiple authors that would most likely frown upon your actions.
Sorry. That's another rule of thumb that would be broken.

I dont get it.....
So ripping sprites from copyrighted games to use in a program that states you cant use it past "2002.04.14" isnt pissing anyone else off?

What makes it so wrong to distribute a pack if credit is given?

WRONG. My first post, I admit, I did encourage him to release all the characters. But my LAST post I asked him to just upload the config files, so that all a noob has to do is download the characters(from one of the links that was provided) and put them in the "CHARS" folder, and run mugen without any further file editing. Just a misunderstanding.

If the LinMugen is exactly the same as WinMugen, then I know that all of my stuff works (as I've already weeded out what doesn't work on my pc), but I almost forgot about the case sensitive part.  That might explain some of my issues, but not all.  Right now I keep getting the "static/ash: can't access tty; job control turned off", "Initialization complete, entering loop, ^C to exit..." error.

As far as the authors consent goes, yes I realize they put in a lot of hard work, and yes I realize that they like to keep their characters to themselves and trade them like pokemon cards, but hell, half of their sites haven't been updated in 3-4 years if not more.  From what I've seen, when Mugen first came out, it was really hot, and hit it's peak in 2001, but has pretty much abandoned since.  Yeah there's still a few big sites out there where people will publicly offer their work, but for the most part, the only way to get a character that's not ryu or a KOF is to search sites that have mostly broken links or some other 5 year old page.  I have as many characters as I could find, but there is no way to get a "complete" game set from existing pages.  I kinda feel that getting a large base collection out there will make it easier for someone to fill in the gaps and complete all the sets; I've tried for almost 2 months now, with limited success.

I'm still not making a torrent until I can get past these minor errors on the xbox port though.
