XMugen-linux Beta v0.1-- Posted by XanTium on January 22 23:31 EST
Darcelf/Alg5 released  M.U.G.E.N for Xbox:

Quote

XMugen-linux is not an xbox port of mugen, it's a mini linux distro reduced to it's minimum in order to launch mugen on Xbox.
BEWARE: it's a early BETA version which has not been tested a lot.

It's a new "concept" for games that can't be ported (because no public source code).
You could expect this to be easier than a port, but there were some parts that take time (finding on which teminal mugen works, making the pad emulate a keyboard, shrinking linux to it's minimum, ...)

2 joysticks should be supported.
If you want to add things into mugen, just go to one of the many web pages you will find on internet (make sure the linux version of mugen is compatibility with these addons).

To do:
* Add a proper reboot when exit mugen (partition are not unmounted in current version of Xmugen-linux!)
* use the real joy2key instead of my ugly hack!

M.U.G.E.N is a 2D fighting game engine designed by Elecbyte starting in 1999 using the Allegro game programming library. Elecbyte distributed beta versions that ran under DOS, Linux, and Windows. The engine allows for anyone to create characters, stages, and other game objects through interpreted text files and graphics and sound compilations, and it also supports MP3 background music during gameplay. The engine is very powerful and flexible, allowing for the same type of functionality found in most any commercial 2D fighting game, such as the Street Fighter games produced by Capcom or the King of Fighters games produced by SNK.
More info about M.U.G.E.M here.

NICE . This is a pretty smart approach to porting it .

Has anyone tested this with any of the popular fighters and levels ?

Ive gotten Gentoox to the point where it starts to load Mugen and then it gives me the error flashing lights. But correct me if Im wrong, but thats because of a problem due to the lack of spirtes, stages and so on and not in the software its self, right? Or am I just useless when it comes to linux?

i cant even get that far, it just goes straight to black, and then the led flashes orange on me, then shuts down.

i followed the instructions in the readme, this is how i interpreted them

place "mugen" dir in e
place linuxboot.cfg in root of e
install the default.xbe somewhere and add a link (/e/emulators/xmugen/default.xbe)
launch xbe

this is how i did it, and it doesnt work for me. perhaps default.xbe should be on the root of e as well?
i just want to see something come up on the screen lol.

*edit*
I got it working and the playback is awsome. I havent figured out how to load other screensets yet so I cant test anything other than the basic "Kunf Fu" man demo, but even that has reflective floring, fast fream rate, perfect sound and all. Wow. Great work from this author!

That is the correct way to install this.....

but other hand, I can get linux to boot and as it begins to start, I get :
"Error: Can't change video mode to 640x400x32bits
Switch to 640x400x16bits? (y/n)"

Wanted to know if I needed a keyboard for that part....

:Edit:  Doh!  I forgot to click the left analog stick for yes.. Silly me..... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif)

P.S.

I Got Cable and EvilKen to work and it is working great..

thanks, i'm the author of this Xmugen  jester.gif

it's normal that you have only one caracters. like any mugen on pc.

i didn't test any addons indeed, nor 2 players.

i tested it only on my xbox 1.0. i don't know for others xbox versions. indeed, if you're able to launch linux on your xbox, xmugen-linux should work.

I got several characters , backgrounds and also MP3s... And they all work well..

BUT, If I have two controllers plugged in (one big boy controller and one S-Type) the program will let me move 2 times and then, all buttons on both controllers lock up....

anyone else got this problem...

Thank you Thank you!

I've been hoping for an Xbox port, this is the next best thing  smile.gif

Now if only they released the source or one of the shadow projects would take off.

no. current version has the parameters put inside the joy2key executable.
i don't know why but it wasn't working when used with command line parameters.
