How To Get Epsxe Working On The Xbox Using Xdsl
« Reply #15 on: January 15, 2006, 04:39:00 PM »

It always froze for me when I had 3 pheripherals plugged into the xbox. I always had the dvd IR receiver plugged into the 3rd port and my controller S on the 1st so no freezes happened. But when I needed another controller, and plugged the it into the 2nd port, it freezes the boot screen, so I just removed the IR receiver and everything worked fine again

Not a problem.  I'm just happy to know that my tutorial is inspiring people to try this.

I'm still in the process of testing my games when i have some free time so I'll start posting configurations for best setup per game on my next day off likely.  Also trying to compile Mooby's CDR plugin so that it won't conflict with Pete's plugins.

Being a total Linux noob, I followed everything from your tutorial and it worked wonders!  I had no idea it was possible to run PSX games this welll on an Xbox running Linux. The only frustrating part was setting up the controller configuration. Besides that, I am really impressed.

Heh...mooby's cdr hates linux epsxe really bad in xdsl.  This will take a lot of testing I suspect which is annoying since that means no cd audio in games that use them (Megaman X3 PAL, Dead or Alive, DarkStalkers, Wipeout, etc)

Ah well...

So far of the 40 games I've tried only 3 have given me troubles.  Megaman X3 locks up at the loading screen...The Misadventures of Tron Bonne just sits on a black screen at start (but that game has never seemed to work right in emulators so why should it start now I guess)...Bloody Roar 2 skips so bad it's almost unplayable.  guess it's cause it's one of the few 640X480 ps1 games.

However games that I've tried that seem to work great (using the settings I outlined in my tutorial and barring some garbage around video windows in games like Lunar 1-2 and Parasite Eve 2):

Lunar 1 and 2 (with working disc changing)
Megaman X4-6
Megaman Legends 1 and 2
Chrono Trigger
Rival Schools Evolution 2
Street Fighter EX+A
Wild Arms 1 and 2 (be sure to use schp7501.bin for wild arms 2)
Suikoden 1 and 2
Legend of Legaia
Parasite Eve 1 and 2 (Parasite Eve 2 has some vanishing Aya bugs but only when picking up items on the field.  Not Gamebreaking)
Beyond the Beyond (Hey don't look at me like thatleast it paved the way for  Golden Sun)
Threads of Fate (both scenarios work now)
Chocobo Racing
Xenogears
Psychic Force
Ehrgeiz  (only tested the arcade mode currently)
Evil Zone
Street Fighter Alpha 3
Final Fantasy Origins
Grandia
Valkyrie Profile (finally playable)
Megaman 8
Castlevania Symphony of the Night
Star Ocean the 2nd Star Story (finally playable)
Dragon Warrior VII (text boxes can now be seen)
Dragonball GT Final Bout (no excuse for this one lol)
Final Fantasy Tactics
Breath of Fire 3
Breath of Fire 4
Umihara Kawase Syun

Games that work but have annoying errors or need work to play:

Brave Fencer Musashi (nasty text rewrite bug...playable but annoying)
SaGa Frontier 1 and 2 (minor version of the text rewrite bug but can still be annoying)
Metal Gear Solid (reads from iso constantly so voices break up when streamed off an iso on dvd)
Final Fantasy VII (standard battle menu problems it's always had without tweaking)
Final Fantasy VIII (same as above but the framerate is better)

there's nothing wrong with FF 7's battle menus if you don't use frameskip (similar to pcsxbox), but the game will run slower

yeah that's why I put the better framerate comment under FFVIII.  Thankfully FFVII can still be played without the menu if you press select to bring up the sub window that states what you are aiming at.

Maybe i'll just do up a tutorial on how to run the pc version of FFVII on linux using wine, lol.

would it yield performance increases if you cut the linux distro down to just the bare basics needed to run the emulator? you'd have more free memory and whatnot that way as I see it.

how is this possible? the xbox can handle double emulated software at great speeds, i am truely amazed. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)

One question....can this be done with other emulators like say neoragex, or n64 emulators.  And does running epsxe on linux allow psx boot from dvdrom? using a samsung drive?

Thank you

yes, i only tried an original game. the game was ridge racer type 4. my disc is pretty scratched up so at first i figured it wouldnt boot right but it did. i have a samsung drive and put the original game in my xbox and loaded epsxe and ran from cdrom. game booted and was playable but it crashed on me. i suspect it was my disc. i havent checked any other games yet tho.

Well I'll be damned....I tried an original disc on my samsung drive first time I got it installed and all i got was a lot of whirring (Diablo) so I just assumed pcsxbox's aversion to ps1 discs was universal.  Just tried it with SFEX though and it loaded fine...well load times were worse than what i remembered but still playable.  Another option for those that can use it and lack a dvd burner.

If there is a linux port the answer is almost certainly yes within reason.  I know for a fact that Zsnes works using this method.  However until I figure out why the sound sometimes doesn't play when you load the emulator I couldn't add it to the tutorial.  Unfortunately aside from ePSXe, zsnes, snes9x, gens, Mame, and zinc there really aren't all that many linux ported emulators that are up to date with their windows counterparts.  (wonder how the xbox can handle the linux port of zinc...possibly strong enough to run the zn1 Capcom stuff like Rival Schools and Battle arena toshinden 2)

However using xwine the possibility of running the windows version of any emulator is unlimited (barring that it works)...as soon as I figure out the directory problem for the win32 version of ePSXe I'll be sure to add it the tutorial for those that wish to play via that version for better plugin support and sound (much as i've grown to like the way linux handles sound some may not).

hey DarkCloud12X, I just wanted to express my thanks for bringing this topic over from the other forum. The tutorial looks great! Glad to see it is generating some interest.

I wonder if the emu will run better for those with a ram upgrade - wonder if linux picks up the extra ram...
I don't have the upgrade myself, but would be interesting to see. I honestly thought performance would be awful - but it sounds pretty reasonable given the circumstances. As much as people want an xbox port of Epsxe - it's not going to happen. This is a nice alternative.

Hope everyone posts there results to try and tweak the games to their best possible configs.

I plan on testing myself hopefully over the weekend. Your xwine idea also sounds promising.

Thanks again!  biggrin.gif
